Abstract:
High voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is prone to metallic particles. The particle void can reduce the dielectric strength of the insulation material of SF6 gas. This paper discusses the developed particle detector for GIS using a new approach by using image processing to reduce flashover phenomena occurring on energized GIS. The particle detector consists of borescope, laptop and a detection program. The program was coded using MATLAB using image processing algorithm. The in-lab test was conducted on the simulated GIS to see the effectiveness of the particle detector to detect small particles inside the narrow GIS enclosure. In real world application, the borescope will be inserted through GIS access hole before filling the enclosure with SF6 gas. This new approach is proposed to be conducted during the erection and commissioning of new GIS. This new approach looks promising because it can reduce flashover phenomena caused by existence of metallic particle and also reduces Greenhouse gas emission to the air.

Abstract:
Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is an important electric power equipment in a substation, and its running state has a significant relationship with stability, security, and reliability of the whole electric power system. Detecting and analyzing the decomposition byproducts of sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6) is an effective method for GIS state assessment and fault diagnosis. This paper proposes a novel gas sensor based on flower-like ZnO nanorods to detect typical SF6decompositions. Flower-like ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The gas sensor was fabricated with a planar-type structure and applied to detect SF6decomposition products. It shows excellent sensing properties to SO2, SOF2, and SO2F2with rapid response and recovery time and long-term stability and repeatability. Moreover, the sensor shows a remarkable discrimination among SO2, SOF2, and SO2F2with high linearity, which makes the prepared sensor a good candidate and a wide application prospect detecting SF6decomposition products in the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Impinging streams (IS) are classified into gas-continuous and liquid-continuous ones (GIS and LIS). Large number of experimental data has shown GIS promotes transfer very efficiently; while it has the intrinsic faultiness of very short residence time, and its flow configuration is relatively complex, resulting in difficulty in arranging multistage process. Essentially, GIS is applicable only for rapid processes controlled by gas film diffusion. The effect of LIS enhancing transfer is negligible; while it has the features of efficient micromixing and strong pressure fluctuation both which are resulted from the intensive interaction between the opposing streams and can promote process kinetics. All the features of IS, including GIS and LIS, have great potential of application. Reviewing the results of number investigations, mostly worked by the authors, a somewhat detailed introduction to the features of IS and several cases of its successful applications, such as wet FGD, preparation of ultrafine or nano powders, successful industrial application of large scale LIS reactors and crystallizers, etc, are described.

Abstract:
In order to check whether there are defects in GIS (gas-insulation-switchgear), it is necessary to do AC voltage withstand test before putting into operation. According to the standards, when doing AC voltage withstand test after GIS expansion or maintenance, the original neighboring parts should be power cut and grounded. For the double bus substation,it means that the whole substation should be power cut, which will decrease the power supply reliability of the grid and have a tremendous impact on the power grid To solve the problem, this paper presents a new AC voltage withstand test method for GIS without power cut, and explains principles and field applications of this method.

Abstract:
Gas insulated switchgear equipment (GIS) is widely used in power system, and more attention has been paid to discharge defects than mechanical defects. However, since mechanical defects are a major cause of the failure in GIS, it is of great significance to carry out relevant research on mechanical defects. Detection and diagnosis methods of mechanical defects based on vibration signal are studied in this paper. Firstly, vibration mechanisms of GIS are analyzed. Due to structural differences between single phase insulated type GIS and three phase insulated type GIS, there are big differences in vibration mechanisms between the two types of GISs. Secondly, experimental research on mechanical defects is carried out based on a 110 kV GIS equipment and a self-developed vibration detection system; results show that mechanical defects can be diagnosed by analyzing signal amplitude, frequency spectrum and waveform distortion rate, and a large current is more beneficial for diagnosing mechanical defects. Lastly, field application has been carried out on 220 kV GIS equipment, and a poor contact defect is found, demonstrating that abnormal diagnosis can be realized by method proposed in this paper. Experimental research and field application demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of detection and diagnosis method for mechanical defects based on vibration signal and provide experience for subsequent engineering application.

Abstract:
For better application of X-ray digital imaging technology in defect detection in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), it is essential to investigate the typical defect and establish the defect database, which has not been adequately performed in previous work. Systematic experimental research is also needed to accumulate data and experience. In this research, an experimental platform, including Computed Radiography (CR) imaging system and a GIS model, is built, and extensive tests of different kinds of typical defects are studied. The influence X-ray irradiation on SF6 under different tube voltage levels is firstly examined, which proves that the withstand voltage of SF6 gas has not been affected and no dissociation has been found. Then, several kinds of defects are tested by X-ray digital imaging technology. The successful application examples of “visual” detection of defects further prove the practicability and validity of the X-ray digital imaging technique. Finally, the image database of typical defects inside of GIS is established and the defect risk is also analyzed in three levels, which would be useful for the defect severity diagnosis and risk assessment.

Abstract:
This paper describes application of carbon nanotube (CNT) gas sensor to chemical detection of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) decomposition products generated by AC or DC corona discharge, aiming to develop a new diagnosis method of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) filled with high pressure SF6 gas. Currently, most of GIS are designed and operated for conventional high voltage AC (HVAC) power transmission lines. Moreover, in recent years, the electrical power industry has shown a trend shifting from HVAC to high voltage DC power transmission, which has many advantages such as high power capacity and low power loss. This technological trend motivated us to explore and expand the application of CNT gas sensor to detection of SF6 decomposition products generated by AC and DC corona discharges. It was found that the CNT gas sensor exhibited significant response to AC and DC corona discharges and its dependency on the DC voltage polarity. In order to elucidate the mechanism of the polarity effect, SF6 decomposition products were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as using a gas detection tube. Based on comparison between the polarity effects on the CNT sensor response and the decomposition products, a possible contribution of hydrogen fluoride to the CNT gas sensor response was suggested.

Abstract:
The medical computed tomography (CT) technique cannot be directly applied to power equipment, such as gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), because of its huge size and immovability. In this research, a three-dimensional X-ray imaging system is developed for GIS equipment. The three-dimensional X-ray imaging system includes machinery, motion control, data acquisition, image reconstruction and three-dimensional image display subsystems. The principle of three-dimensional X-ray imaging is based on the Radon transform and the inverse transform. The rotary scanning device successfully collects 360 sets of projection data. The tomographic image is reconstructed using the acquired projection data. Shown in this paper is what is believed to be the world's first three-dimensional structure photograph of GIS that can be sliced and displayed using X-ray imaging. The application of the three-dimensional X-ray imaging system to the 110 kV GIS equipment at the Shayao Station of the Dongguan Power Supply Bureau shows that the overall accuracy of the system can reach up to 200 microns and the highest resolution of the output tomogram can reach up to 3160 × 3160 pixels.

Abstract:
Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) has been widely used in global power grids currently. However, there are several disadvantages of GIS which will cause partial discharge (PD) in the insulation and then make GIS shut down. In this paper, the application of the ultra high frequency (UHF)method for partial discharge monitoring is discussed in detail, including the placement of the UHF sensors , detection system and the different characteristics of the different defects in the PD signals diagram are analyzed as well. Finally, some relevant conclusions are drawn based on Finite-Diffrenee Time-Domain algorithm (FDTD) for simulation of the electromagnetic waves by UHF PD detection technology.

Abstract:
Despite widespread use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to strengthening health systems, the application of GIS to health systems strengthening in resource-poor Sub-Saharan Africa remains rare. Over the June 2012 to December 2013 period, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) conducted a pilot application of GIS to health systems development in one rural impoverished district of the Upper East Region (UER). Workers were deployed to gather coordinates of health care facilities throughout the UER. Coordinates were linked to routine health information data, and utilized to generate maps for guiding task prioritization. For example, geocoded Community-based Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) program data were used to target services in communities where the prevalence of childhood acute malnutrition was relatively high. GIS was pivotal in tracking and responding to infectious disease morbidity from causes such as diarrheal diseases and tuberculosis. UER Regional Health Administration (RHA) authorities are currently utilizing GIS to map antenatal care coverage, skilled birth deliveries, neonatal mortality, still births, family planning service caseloads as well as for targeting programmatic action. Experience emerging from this trial attests to the value of GIS in contributing to efforts to strengthen health systems in rural impoverished regions of Africa.

Abstract:
Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is the most important equipment in the power system. The partial discharge (PD) is the main detection method for the insulation failure. Especially, for insulation condition assessment, the pattern recognition technology of partial discharge in GIS is the most important. Acoustic detection of GIS PD is the effective method and it has long application history. The acoustic detection method is very suitable for defects detection in GIS, for it has the advantages of on-line detection and easy realization of locating the defects. The PD pattern characteristic is the key factor for the analysis of defect type. The PD pattern characteristics of four typical defects in GIS based on acoustic detection are studied in this paper. The results provide a test basis for the recognition of PD types and a deeper study of the mechanism of PD.

Abstract:
The applicability of functionally graded materials (FGM) for solid insulator of gas insulated switchgear (GIS) was investigated. First, a new fabrication method based on layer-by-layer casting technique was demonstrated to prepare FGM insulator possessing spatial distribution of dielectric constants. Then, electric field strength in the FGM spacer model was calculated and optimized by using finite element method (FEM). Three types of truncated cone spacers were fabricated according to the optimization results. Finally, surface flashover tests were performed under AC voltage and lightning impulse voltage applications. Results in both circumstances indicated an evident improvement of flashover voltage when FGM insulator was employed. As a result, we verified the fabrication technique and the applicability of FGM insulator for enhancement of insulation performance in GIS device.

Abstract:
The author describes four main work directions of creating geophysical maps using modern software, represented by specialized systems (SSS) and geographic information ones (GIS). The technological features of data processing practice stages and creating geophysical fields’ digital models, the compilation and designing geophysical maps’ thematic content as results of geological and geophysical works are considered. The main tasks of combined use of GIS and SSS tools were identified. To overcome these shortcomings, additional tools were developed for ArcGIS, as the leading system in the oil and gas industry. They ensure the preservation of design parameters for color scales adopted in the SSS; automatic calculation of the labels’ rotation angle to the objects of point localization; maintaining the layer structure of map projects at exporting to publishing program formats. The solutions considered in the article can be applied for compilation and design of isoline maps in some other areas of thematic cartography, and can also contribute to improving the cartographic component of domestic geological and geophysical software products and geographic information systems.
