Abstract:
A análise do cálcio sérico apresentou média dentro da normalidade (10,20mg/dl±0,32) e valores médios e fosfatase alcalina ligeiramente aumentados (105,40 U/L±23,70).
Following a drop in estrogen in the period of menopause some women begin to lose bone mass more than 1% per year reaching the end of five years with loss greater than 25%. In this regard, factors such as older age, low calcium intake and premature menopause favor the onset of osteoporosis. Preventive methods such as nutritional counseling to a proper diet and the support of technology through applications that assess dietary intake are essential. Thus, this study aimed to develop an application for Android® platform focused on the evaluation of nutritional and organic conditions involved in bone health and risks for developing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. To achieve this goal we proceeded to a study of 72 women aged 46-79 years, from the physical exercise for bone health of the Laboratory for Research in Biochemistry and Densitometry the Federal Technological University of Paraná program. Data were collected in the second half of 2014 through tests Bone Densitometry and Body Composition, Blood Tests, Anthropometric data and Nutrition Assessment. The study included women with a current diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis primary, aged more than 45 years postmenopausal. For the assessment of bone mineral density and body composition used the device Absorptiometry Dual Energy X-ray (DXA) brand Hologic Discovery TM Model A. For anthropometric assessment was included to body mass, height, abdominal circumference, Waist circumference and hip circumference. The instrument for assessing food consumption was used Recall 24 hours a day (24HR). The estimated intake of energy and nutrients was carried from the tabulation of the food eaten in the Software Diet Pro 4®. In a sub sample of 30 women with osteopenia / osteoporosis serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase tests were performed. The results demonstrated a group of women (n = 30) average calcium intake of 570mg / day (± 340). The analysis showed a mean serum calcium within the normal range (10,20mg / dl ± 0.32) and average values and slightly increased alkaline phosphatase (105.40 U / L ± 23.70). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the consumption of protein and the optimal daily intake of calcium (0.375 p-value 0.05). Based on these findings, we developed an application early stage in Android® platform operating system Google®, being called OsteoNutri. We chose to use Java Eclipse® where it was executed Android® version of the project; choice of application icons and setting the visual editor for building the application layouts. The DroidDraw® was used for development of the three application GUIs. For practical tests we used a cell compatible with the version that was created (4.4 or higher). The prototype was developed in conjunction with the Group and Instrumentation Applications Development (GDAI) of the Federal Technological University of Paraná. So this application can be considered an important tool in dietary control, allowing closer control consumption of calcium and dietary proteins.

Abstract:
The occurrence of two recent major earthquakes, 17 August 1999 Mw = 7.4 Izmit and 12 November 1999 Mw = 7.1 Dü
zce, in Turkey prompted seismologists and geologists to conduct studies to predict magnitude and location of a potential earthquake that can cause substantial damage in Istanbul. Many scenarios are available about the extent and size of the earthquake. Moreover, studies have recommended rough estimates of risk areas throughout the city to trigger responsible authorities to take precautions to reduce the casualties and loss for the earthquake expected. Most of these studies, however, adopt available procedure by modifying them for the building stock peculiar to Turkey. The assumptions and modifications made are too crude and thus are believed to introduce significant deviations from the actual case. To minimize these errors and use specific damage functions and capacity curves that reflect the practice in Turkey, a study was undertaken to predict damage pattern and distribution in Istanbul for a scenario earthquake proposed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The success of these studies strongly depends on the quality and validity of building inventory and site property data. Building damage functions and capacity curves developed from the studies conducted in Middle East Technical University are used. A number of proper attenuation relations are employed. The study focuses mainly on developing a software to carry out all computations and present results. The results of this study reveal a more reliable picture of the physical seismic damage distribution expected in Istanbul.

Azizi, Maral. "Application of Adaptive Techniques in Regression Testing for Modern Software Development." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1538762/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation we investigate the applicability of different adaptive techniques to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the regression testing. Initially, we introduce the concept of regression testing. We then perform a literature review of current practices and state-of-the-art regression testing techniques. Finally, we advance the regression testing techniques by performing four empirical studies in which we use different types of information (e.g. user session, source code, code commit, etc.) to investigate the effectiveness of each software metric on fault detection capability for different software environments. In our first empirical study, we show the effectiveness of applying user session information for test case prioritization. In our next study, we apply learning from the previous study, and implement a collaborative filtering recommender system for test case prioritization, which uses user sessions and change history information as input parameter, and return the risk score associated with each component. Results of this study show that our recommender system improves the effectiveness of test prioritization; the performance of our approach was particularly noteworthy when we were under time constraints. We then investigate the merits of multi-objective testing over single objective techniques with a graph-based testing framework. Results of this study indicate that the use of the graph-based technique reduces the algorithm execution time considerably, while being just as effective as the greedy algorithms in terms of fault detection rate. Finally, we apply the knowledge from the previous studies and implement a query answering framework for regression test selection. This framework is built based on a graph database and uses fault history information and test diversity in attempt to select the most effective set of test cases in term of fault detection capability. Our empirical evaluation of this study with four open source programs shows that our approach can be effective and efficient by selecting a far smaller subset of tests compared to the existing techniques.

Martins, José Daniel Posada Vilas Boas. "Sofinare-workflow management, a case study: a web database application development." Master's thesis, Universidade da Beira Interior, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.6/2000.

Full text
Abstract:
A web-based application has been developed to ensure recording of all details of maintenance works carried out at SOFINARE (a Portuguese aeronautical company meeting EASA PART 145 standards). The main objective is to have a safe and easy-to-use system to control and retain maintenance work records. This application is just the beginning of a future software that later will be developed by Grupo7Air engineers to be used in their organisation covering specific aspects such as having all maintenance information (aircrafts, technicians, manuals, maintenance programmes, works, inventory, component tracking, etc.) stored in a vast group of tables, which will form the database, in a way that, any data one wants to know can be picked up in those tables through the Software. This research was carried out at AEROTÉCNICA and SOFINARE, both Portuguese aeronautical organisations, with the purpose of analysing the maintenance process and also to study how a software implementation can be done to controlling the maintenance process in the aeronautical maintenance industry. Later on, this software can be continuously developed and upgraded to be widely used in the entire Grupo7Air organisation, to help through the maintenance management while complying with the existent aeronautical legislation requirements, while ensuring aircraft maintenance planning is efficient and accurate, and, at the same time, helping the needs of the company to survive, that is, being able to keep making money in the present crisis. This work begun by planning how the database should be created in order to save maintenance organisation data safely and correctly, so it can be used later to future software tasks. This application has been developed (and it will continue to be) using PHP open source language and MySQL database resource. The use of PHP and MySQL as the developing programming languages allow this software to be a multiple platform software in a time saving way, since the source code is recognized by the different browsers, that is, it works on Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox for example, being these, the favorite browsers of the company’s staff, running under Windows, OS X or Linux. Implementing and learning the software through one’s favorite browser is thus simplified, it doesn’t have to be installed in each employee PC and also reduces implementation costs. The PC has only to be able to connect to the internal server and have access to internal database where all data are safely stored through this application.

In the era of open innovation, the capability to conduct collaborative research and development has become a key indicator of absorptive capacity and innovation competitiveness. However, the literature addressing open innovation has a focus on developed economies. New evidence from the South African National R&D Survey, together with supplementary data, make it possible to gain a greater understanding of the structure of open innovation in nanotechnology, biotechnology and open source software in the South African context. Findings from a comparative analysis include: the identification of collaboration-intensive R&D networks whose structures are influenced by the characteristics of each technological platform; linkages between localized innovation networks and global innovation networks; and distinct patterns of expenditure, sectoral distribution and geographical location characterizing each of these technologies. The paper concludes with some suggestions for policy applications for these findings as well as directions for further research.

Abstract:
The application of Statistical Process Control (SPC) to software processes has been a challenging issue for software engineers and researchers. Although SPC is suggested for providing process control and achieving higher process maturity levels, there are very few resources that describe success stories, implementation details, and implemented guidelines for applying SPC to specific metrics. In this thesis the findings of a case study that is performed for investigating the applicability of SPC to software metrics in an emergent CMM Level 3 software organization are presented. As being one of the basic and most sophisticated tools of SPC, control charts are used for the analysis. The difficulties in application of Statistical Process Control to a CMM Level 3 organization are observed by using the existing data of defect density, rework percentage, productivity and review performance metrics and relevant suggestions are provided for dealing with them. Finally the analysis results are summarized and a guideline is prepared for software companies who want to utilize control charts by using their existing metric data.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration in Project Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Though strides have been taken to ensure the availability and application of technology, there still exists some disparity between the envisaged use compared to the actual one (Ross, Romich & Pena, 2016:48). The application of technology, such as project management software (PMS), could be the answer to unlocking success in projects especially where a large scope and high degree of complexity can sometimes prove to be very challenging. The research explored how the application of PMS influences project success. A case of NPOs in the Western Cape Province, South Africa was used. The research objectives were to (1) establish if PMS is applied in the NPO’s work, (2) determine employees’ interactions with PMS relative to project success, and (3) identify the limitations of current PMS being used. A non-experimental and quantitative approach was taken to conduct the research. Out of a potential 200 units of analysis, a sample group consisting of 132 project-implementing NPOs in the Western Cape was used. Ninety-four responses were received setting the response rate at 71%. The research instruments used were questionnaires, which were administered physically and online. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. There is high project success rate among NPO projects in the Western Cape at 77%. The research revealed that PMS is utilised in a significant number of organisations with the most popular ones used being Microsoft Project, Project Manager and Jira. Most project offices utilise PMS on a weekly or monthly basis especially during the project planning and execution stages. The limitations of the software include that it can over-complicate issues, be time-consuming, and costly. In light of the above, respondents revealed that they believe PMS does have a positive influence on project success. Furthermore, based on the findings and conclusions derived from this study, the researcher made a few recommendations. For example, persons in academia need to widen the scope of the study to different geographical locations and use a different research approach. Another is that software engineers/developers must consider localised support for PMS as well as improve on scalability issues. To NPOs, recommendations were made on potential training sessions to capacitate the sector to be more adept to information and communication technology (ICT) and eventually make more use of PMS.

Abstract:
The term “Globalization” brought many challenges with itself in the field of software development. The challenge of accurate effort estimation in GSD is one among them. When talking about effort estimation, the discussion starts for effort estimation methods. There are a number of effort estimation methods available. Existing effort estimation methods used for co-located projects are might not enough capable to estimate effort for distributed projects. This is why; ratio of failure of GSD projects is high. It is important to calibrate existing methods or invent new with respect to GSD environment. This thesis is an attempt to explore the accuracy of effort estimation methods for distributed projects. For this purpose, the authors selected three estimation approaches: COCOMO II, SLIM and ISBSG. COCOMO II and SLIM are two well known effort estimation methods, whereas, ISBSG is used to check the trend of a project depending upon its (ISBSG’s) repository. The selection of the methods and approaches was based on their popularity and advantages over other methods/approaches. Two finished projects from two different organizations were selected and analyzed as case studies. The results indicated that effort estimation with COCOMO II deviated 15.97 % for project A and 9.71% for project B. Whereas, SLIM showed the deviation of 4.17% for project A and 10.86 % for project B. Thus, the authors concluded that both methods underestimated the effort in the studied cases. Furthermore, factors that might cause deviation are discussed and several solutions are recommended. Particularly, the authors state that existing effort estimation methods can be used for GSD projects but they need calibration by considering GSD factors to achieve accurate results. This calibration will help in process improvement of effort estimation.

Abstract:
Playing chess on a smart phone has gained popularity in the last few years, offering the convenience of correspondence play, automatic recording of a game, etc. Although a good number of players love playing chess on a tablet/smart phone, it doesn't come close to the experience of playing over the traditional board. The feel and pleasure are more real when playing face down with the opponent sitting across each other rather than playing in mobile devices. This is especially true during chess tournaments. It would be ideal to enhance the experience of playing chess on board with the features of chess playing on smart phones. Based on the design of a roll able smart chess board, an android app has been implemented to interact with the board. It reads signals from the smart chess board and maps the movements of the chess pieces to the phone. The recorded play would be used as input for game analysis. The design and implementation of a server for playing and reviewing a game online have also been studied in this thesis.

"Key success drivers in offshore software development : New Zealand and Indian vendors' perspectives : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology at Massey University, Albany campus, New Zealand." Massey University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/903.

Abstract:
Offshore software development (OSD) is a leading business sector in the present ‘glocal’ IT marketplace, and vendors in different countries are opening software development centres worldwide to take advantage of the new business opportunities. However, software development is both a technical and a social process as various software modules need to be integrated, which requires ongoing interaction between the stakeholders. The software modules rely upon local knowledge regarding customer wants, project specific features, chosen design methodologies by development team members and synchronisation of activities to confirm the next design iteration. This study focuses on knowledge sharing processes involving the interplay between acquiring local knowledge and applying the knowledge acquired into the design of the client-specific software builds. New knowledge is created as new processes are applied and new outcomes realised, resulting in re-definition of software development practices. Building on existing theories with empirical case study evidence, this research reveals the socio-technical influences on knowledge management in the OSD process. Ideographic research methods have been applied to bring sensitivity in the everyday organisational activities for knowledge sharing across diverse social and cultural groups within two country contexts (New Zealand and India). Empirical data from ten case studies is used to inductively develop a conceptual framework, which has been applied to make within case and cross case comparisons across three levels of analysis (micro, meso and macro) for knowledge sharing. The micro level analysis explores individual key success drivers (behaviours and methodologies), the meso level explores organisational level practices (work processes and structures) and the macro level gives a holistic evaluation across two country contexts. Country contexts reveal that New Zealand vendors share closer cultural proximity with their clients, are engaged in client facing skills and have further outsourced software development tasks to other low cost countries. The Indian vendors are involved in software construction, prefer technical specialist skills and have defined more discipline in their software development processes. The thesis offers new insights on how vendors’ shape their software development styles based upon their beliefs and understanding of the offshore market and is especially relevant to both vendors and clients who intend venturing into the offshore market.

RP and recently RM have been key factors in the development of the manufacturing industry in assisting in the development of new products. Fortunately, the application of these technologies has been realised in the medical industry. Surgeons all over the world use physical models created from CT or MRI data using some sort of additive manufacturing. The fabrication of these models has exploded into a popular research area combining engineering, material and medical expertise. Long-term growth in the additive fabrication industry will come from designs that are difficult, time-consuming, costly, or impossible to produce using standard techniques. Growth will occur with advances in current additive processes which are coupled with breakthroughs in new materials. The applications of RP and RM are as diverse as the medical issues that arise. RM of custom design medical prostheses proves to be economically viable solution, not only because it is faster to produce but it gives the designer freedom of creation too. The paper discusses some interesting medical case studies.

Jepson, Anna, and Elin Lundin. "Freemium for large enterprises : – a case study at Swedish software development company Teleopti about development and application of the freemium business model on the market for large enterprises." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-99781.

Abstract:
Many software development companies targeting consumers or small and medium enterprises apply the freemium business model: giving a basic product away for free while charging a premium for an enhanced version of the product or for advanced features. Companies offering more complex and expensive products to large enterprises have not yet adopted the freemium business model to any great extent. This study explores how the freemium business model can be applied to expensive and advanced solutions on the large enterprise market with the purpose of creating a powerful leads generator. How the free product could be technically realized, packaged and marketed was examined through a case study at Swedish software development company Teleopti. The study concludes that self-sufficient customer processes and streamlined internal processes, user-friendly product and processes, adequate marketing communication, substantial stimulation of demand for the premium version and being first-to-market are success factors when applying the freemium business model to expensive and advanced solutions on the large enterprise market. Customer processes have to be self-sufficient and internal processes streamlined in order to avoid soaring continuous costs from offering the free product. Badwill could be created if the product and the processes involving customer actions are not user-friendly. If the free product is not communicated adequately potential customers will not learn about its existence and no leads will be generated. Failure to stimulate demand for the premium product will result in a lack of deals and consequently no revenue. Finally, being first-to-market is desirable, since attention and PR will otherwise be limited. These success factors are further broken down into more specific guidelines as for what to take into consideration when applying the freemium business model in this particular context.

Abstract:
The attributes of landscapes, abiotic and biotic, influence the behaviour of animals. Understanding the reciprocal effects between the landscape, habitats and the animals are an essential tool in sustainable management of natural resources as well as conservation. A source of information about how the environment shapes the behaviour of animals is movement data. The advent of cheap GPS devices has facilitated data collection. The fine scale spatio-temporal resolution allows the identification of complete home-ranges, even habitat that is only transiently used. Fine-scale movement data can also be used as proxy for behaviour-types; different behaviour states cause different movement tracks. I test, extend and apply the multi-change point analysis (MCPA), developed by Gurarie et al. (2009) for the identification of behavioural change points in irregular movement data. The method relies on conventional time-series analysis methods, rather than a Bayesian framework, such as the state space models. After thorough testing of the MCPA, we apply the method and its extension to the GPS data of four red deer and 27 golden eagles. The red deer data were analysed to detect behavioural changes at a seasonal scale and to serve as a test-bed for our extension of the MCPA. The comparison of movement bouts revealed that the expression of behaviour was on a gradient rather than the discreet states. The study of the golden eagle data highlighted the necessity to choose the appropriate sampling regime of movement. If the intervals between the location-fixes are too big, valuable information about important small scale behaviour will be missed.

Abstract:

The global competition and as the worldwide market has become more open a company’s ability to outsource activities to external companies based in other countries, i.e. offshore outsourcing, has increased dramatically. Companies are starting to transfer higher value-added activities that require certain skills, domain knowledge and experience, i.e. Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO). These activities are getting more difficult and complex to manage compared with standardised activities such as payroll, and predict another kind of co-operation and communication between the companies. When the sender and receiver are based in different context, such as organisational and cultural, other aspects might be added to the difficulty. The purpose of this thesis is to describe, and analyse knowledge transfer in a cross cultural context based on three categories identified in the theoretical framework: character of knowledge, distances between sending and receiving context and mutual understanding. Also to answer how cultural differences might affect the knowledge transfer process. The objective of this study is mainly from a Swedish R&D company’s perspective that has an established relation with an external consultancy company based in India. The activities are within the area of dynamical changing software development of complex, communication and knowledge intensive products.

A qualitative case study has been performed based on open target interviews. The findings show that the character of knowledge is an important factor to consider when establishing the knowledge transfer process. It was a need to transfer knowledge not only related to the product itself but also knowledge embedded in organisational routines, processes, practises and norms. This is related to distances between sending and receiving context: organisational and knowledge differences shown in organisational skills and previous experience, and cultural differences mainly visible in communication such as raising problems and an expected top-down approach by managers. The geographical distance adds to the difficulty due to the missing face-to-face contact. The sending company must therefore be very active and can not just expect the receiving company to handle the activity, and especially when the companies’ prerequisites differ as much as in this case. Culture awareness and mutual understanding are factors that improve knowledge transfer.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to explore the business strategies of a firm seeking to develop and profitably market a mobile smartphone application to understand how small, digital entrepreneurships may build sustainable business models given substantial market barriers. Through a detailed examination of one firm’s process to try to commercialize their mobile app, we identify various business model decisions and marketing strategy approaches that hindered the company’s efforts. The case study describes two distinctly different business models adopted in succession, as well as the various adjustments the firm makes to its target market, distribution and pricing approach that led to their current strategy. This research looks closely at business-to-business-to-consumer distribution arrangement for mobile apps and in doing so challenges the rising positive bias that exists for the app store as the dominant actor in the mobile value chain. For practice, this paper suggests unanticipated hurdles small digital entrepreneurs may face if they rely heavily on mobile advertising and the app store to launch and sustain their business.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With the increasing need to streamline the delivery of new developments to the customer and reduce application development time, test case prioritization allows a quicker detection of faults present in the application through the ordering of test cases to be executed. Besides that, a quicker detection enables also the correction of these faults to start as soon as possible. However, when the test cases to be prioritized are automated system tests, traditional criteria used in the literature like code coverage or system models become uninteresting, given that this type of test case, classified as black box test, ignores how the application was coded or modeled. Considering the hypothesis that bigger automated test cases verify more parts of the application and that similar test cases may be testing the same application areas, it seems valid to believe that giving a higher priority to more complex test cases to be executed first can accomplish positive results when compared to the unordered execution of test cases. It is on this scenario that this project studies the usage of call graphs from test cases as the criterion to prioritize them, increasing the priority of the execution of test cases with the higher number of nodes on the graph. The approach proposed in this document showed through two case studies that it is capable of improving fault detection rate compared to unordered test cases. Furthermore, the proposed approach achieved similar results when compared to a traditional prioritization approach using code coverage of the application.

Mutanga, Patrick. "The use of mobile communication technology in professional identity development : a case of using whatsapp messenger to teach inquiry-based pedagogy to university chemistry teachers." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/27295.

Abstract:
This study investigated the feasibility of using WhatsApp Messenger as a tool to enhance the professional identity and inquiry-based pedagogy through the professional development of university chemistry teachers. The epistemological interpretive paradigm was used to guide the study. The study assumed a naturalistic, exploratory investigation. The qualitative research methodology was used to conduct the study. Nine university teachers were purposively sampled from three universities (three teachers from each university) for the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observations, and focus group discussions. Data analysis was completed using the thematic networks analysis. Ethics considerations were observed by not disclosing personal information of the participants or information about the universities where they represented. This study was guided by four theoretical underpinnings: the connectivism theory, the transformative learning theory, the expectancy-value theory, and the dual systems theory. The primary research question guiding this study was: How does the professional identity of university chemistry teachers develop as they learn IBP through WhatsApp Messenger? A two-pronged approach was used in the research: (1) comparing the professional identity of the teachers before and after the course, and (2) observing and describing the professional identity process as the teachers undertook the course. The results from the interviews conducted before the teachers undertook the WhatsApp Messenger-based IBP course showed that most teachers had a negative professional identity. They had become teachers for a variety of reasons, but they did not consider themselves teachers and believed they would leave university teaching if opportunities arose in the industry. They had no formal qualifications in pedagogy, and they did not believe that such knowledge was necessary. The majority of these teachers used teacher-centred approaches. Results from participant observations during the WhatsApp Messenger-based IBP course showed that the course slowly imparted to the teachers the norms associated with not only IBP, but other teaching approaches as well. WhatsApp Messenger provided a flexible online platform where the teachers interacted and exchanged ideas without the need to meet in a physical space. The results from the interviews conducted after the teachers participated in the WhatsApp Messenger-based IBP course showed that the participants' professional identity had changed positively. They now recognised the importance of pedagogy in teaching, they positively identified with the teaching profession, and some were considering acquiring formal qualifications in pedagogy.

Denhere, Nelson. "Managing globally distributed software development using virtual teams: A Middle East case study." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/20706.

Full text
Abstract:
Software project development is increasingly becoming geographically distributed especially in today’s global business environment. In order to build quality software faster andat a lower cost, companies in industrialised countries are turning to globally distributed software development projects. Emerging countries such as India and Israel are known to have large pools of highly trained software engineers at relatively low cost. However, recent trends have shown that new locations are emerging as developmental sites. Examples of those locations in the Middle East include Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. The main attraction of those countries is that they are close to the Arab market. However, distributed development also entails a number of risks and problems, for instance in terms of communication and knowledge transfer between sites, resulting in project failures. Being the project manager of a team that includes remote members has additional challenges compared to managing co-located team members. These projects face particular challenges that need careful managerial attention. This research aims to examine how globally distributed software development projects are managed in the Middle East. The main question to be answered was “How do companies in the Middle East successfully manage and organise software development in a globally distributed environment?”. We outline the factors that were perceived as important by project managers. We also look at how culture affects the operation of virtual teams in a globally distributed software development environment in the Middle East taking religion into consideration. To understand how these factors influence the success of globally distributed software development projects in the Middle East, we conducted a qualitative case study research involving three different companies operating in Dubai, Oman, Abu Dhabi, India and Pakistan. We used semi-structured interviews as the primary sources of information as these allow highly personalised data. This research outlines the following specific project management-related areas that need to be addressed to facilitate successful virtual team operation: Cross-cultural collaboration • Tools and technology used to facilitate GSD • An infrastructure that facilitates communication between virtual teams • Effective project management

The principles of lean were understood to be relevant to the operations of a manufacturing enterprise meaning processes associated with material supply, component production and delivery of products and services to the customer. It was identified there was growing awareness that lean principles could be transferred readily to other functions and sectors. The purpose of the study was to investigate the application of lean principles to knowledgebased activities such as engineering design and product development. The organization under study was Olifant Manufacturing Company (OMC), a division of British Aerospace Systems, Land Systems South Africa. Lean product developments (LPD) was identified as one of the leading approaches currently adopted by organizations attempting to maximize value, increase quality, shorten lead times, and lower the costs for product development (PD) processes. The justification for the research was due to and in response to current adverse market trends. There would be the adoption of processes that would radically reduce the product development lead time, product introduction lead time to market, increase process efficiency and product quality and reduce development costs at OMC. The problem statement was formulated as: “Would the researched Lean principles enable OMC to improve its traditional PD to LPD?” The Life Cycle Management (LCM) framework was the mandated organizational framework that guided the execution of projects at BAE Systems The development of the research literature was guided by research questions that sought to identify the relevant framework that would be tailored within the overarching (LCM) framework to enable process improvements. The main findings were that Lean transformation is an organizational journey that would begin with a top down philosophy or strategy approach. Aspects of Lean Product Development were identified and were found to be integrated into a system framework that integrated the transformation of people, processes and tools and technologies.

Semiconductor manufacturing companies in Taiwan are characterized by multi-layer organizations with complex communication systems and complicated manufacturing technologies to achieve commitment from its board of directors. Senior management has always focused on operation efficiency in the past to fulfill their business needs. The planning method used is issue-based planning or formal strategic planning, leading to local optimization and duplicated redundancy. In order to compete with world-wide companies, the accounting regulation for employee benefit in Taiwan has been adjusted in 2008. High-tech companies in Taiwan need to review cost structure, especial is labor cost. The challenge now comes from an uncertain or fluctuating market demand. It is thus important to maintain flexibility in labor management. This study presents successful case studies by using an extended approach which was developed, based on Koshin Kanri (HK), to translate corporate strategies into executable action plans. A two-phase approach was applied to conduct successful organization changes and fulfill the objectives of the case company and obtain a smooth implementation. This approach was successfully implemented in the operation function and human resource management of the case company, revenue per headcount (RPH) was improved over 10% by a three-year period and reduced recruitment cost by US$ 360,000 in five years.

This study attempts to develop a model related to the case study than Application of earned value to measure personnel cost performance of software development project (hereinafter referred to as the new system) for research. Through literature review, questionnaires, and pre-and post-financial performance results, to achieve the following conclusions. From the case on the performance management system and employee satisfaction survey results, the new system is consistent with the case company needs. Because the staff satisfaction survey showed that more satisfaction with the new system than the old system , overall for the satisfaction scores were improved significantly. From the case company''s financial statements for the past 4 years, the number of employees and revenues and expenses were no significant changes in the conditions. Operating profit from a loss in 2006 from 20,972 K to 2009 years of earnings 6,123 K . The new system can be inferred that it can help companies to improve operating profit. Therefore, application of earned value to measure personnel cost of software development project on the results in the case study is feasible.

Abstract:
Software development is a process in continuous evolution. This characteristic implies also continuous changes in the functionality of the system under development. Some of these changes may cause problems when they are not properly and timely propagated to the project members. The aim of our research is to obtain a good understanding of problems caused by the lack of awareness of changes to features during a distributed software development project, to identify information and artifact repositories used by contributors, and then to draw the requirements of an awareness mechanism to tackle the awareness problem. In order to accomplish our research goals. we conducted a four month long case study at IBM Ottawa Software Lab. which we observed the collaboration patterns of a multi-site development project team. Our findings helped us identify the most important communication media that support development. In particular, we observed that the 3-1% of communication was by phone and via face-to-face interactions. and email was mostly used to alert contributors about changes to features. We also found that changes were not properly and timely propagated due to different corporate cultures of the project teams. Finally, we found that a high volume of communication makes developers prone to overlook important information that can lead to the generation of errors during development., These findings led us to believe that miscommunication and non-timely communication of changes related to feature development caused the release of code that created failures in stable builds. To address this problem. we developed the concept of a relationship to link developers to features. Using this concept, we have designed a feature-based Awareness Mechanism System to collect information, create relationships and deliver awareness information to the contributors involved in the implementation of a feature.

Abstract:
In this thesis I examine the planning tool most commonly known as the transfer of development rights (TDR) and discuss its application in Vancouver. Before addressing Vancouver's use of TDR, I establish the context of TDR use in North America, suggest appropriate policy objectives and constraints for TDR programs, and outline a series of operational decisions made in designing any TDR program. I proceed to evaluate Vancouver's TDR program in light of these discussions. I found that TDR programs can be effective tools for redistributing the costs and benefits of certain types of land use restrictions. However, TDR programs vary widely in their effects. Depending on the specific design of a given program, it can have very different implications. In Vancouver, the TDR program is a relatively minor adjunct to the process of heritage preservation. Like any planning tool, Vancouver's TDR program strikes a balance between various objectives. However, it can be generally stated that fairness or distributional concerns are prevalent in Vancouver's program. Specifically, the protection of property rights is one of the defining elements of the program. Vancouver's program has been marked by a strong discretionary component, which has tended to create high transactions costs. In recent years, though, transaction costs in Vancouver have gone down significantly. As transaction costs have decreased and the program has grown more fluid, the take-up rate of transferable density in Vancouver has increased. These trends are widely expected to continue, as Vancouver's transfer of density program further matures.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Education, 1998.
This case study explores, through critical reflection, the process of a school-based curriculum change (SBCC) and examines to what extent the application of adult education principles facilitates this process. The change is related to three issues: the process of curriculum development; the shift towards professional development based on adult education principles; and the changing role of the consultant in relation to curriculum development. Tire consultant came to realize that in order to promote school based curriculum development it was necessary to work with the head of the department and the teachers in a participative mode, rather than taking a stand as a curriculum development expert. The research findings suggest that in order to apply adult education principles to teachers’ professional development, the consultant needs to move from consultancy based on an expert role towards consultancy based on a process role. The research proposes that professional development based on adult education principles and teamwork could be a promising introduction to a secondorder change promoting a school culture of teamwork and critical reflection. The researcher came to question the appropriateness of a case study based on participant observation as a research methodology in the workplace. She suggests that an action research could be more advantageous to promote a second-order change and could be more in line with adult education principles.

The shortage of technical manuals in Angola and the high cost of what little there is in the local market, are factors of great relevance to this research. With this work we tried to use the wiki as a way to share and disseminate technical documentation within the academic environment of Instituto Superior Politécnico Lusíada de Benguela(ISPLB). By collecting information based on the use of ISPLBWiki (name given to the wiki) by the group of students, we hope to be able to assess the feasibility of using a collaborative tool, in order to apply the same principle in the subsequent units of learning distance from Lusíada University of Angola. The tool used for implementing the case study was MediaWiki, which is a wiki software written in PHP using management systems database MySQL and licensed under the GNU GPL. The project is developed through the SourceForge SVN. This technology is mainly used in Wikimedia projects. Before applying this case study, other possibilities for sharing and disseminating knowledge been contemplated, such as Moodle, however the popularity of Wikipédia combined with relative simplicity in its use were important factors for choosing MediaWiki . This paper aims to examine the experiences experienced by students of computer science, while using a pedagogical tool based collaborative wiki. The research was conducted at the Instituto Superior Politécnico Lusíada de Benguela(ISPLB). Through the analysis of results (through a survey), teachers and students were perceived by some technical difficulties of operation and cultural difficulties, especially related to team collaboration, however they all found the tool as useful and educationally viable, considering the advantage of information sharing as the greatest advantage of the wiki.

Bassett, Cameron. "Cloud computing and innovation: its viability, benefits, challenges and records management capabilities." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/20149.

Abstract:
This research investigated the potential benefits, risks and challenges, innovation properties and viability of cloud computing for records management on an Australian organisation within the mining software development sector. This research involved the use of a case study results analysis as well as a literature analysis. The literature analysis identified the ten potential benefits of cloud computing, as well as the ten risks and challenges associated with cloud computing. It further identified aspects, which needed to be addressed when adopting cloud computing in order to promote innovation within an organisation. The case study analysis was compared against a literature review of ten potential benefits of cloud computing, as well as the ten risks and challenges associated with cloud computing. This was done in order to determine cloud computing’s viability for records management for Company X (The company in the case study). Cloud computing was found to be viable for Company X. However, there were certain aspects, which need to be discussed and clarified with the cloud service provider beforehand in order to mitigate possible risks and compliance issues. It is also recommended that a cloud service provider who complies with international standards, such as ISO 15489, be selected. The viability of cloud computing for organisations similar to Company X (mining software development) followed a related path. These organisations need to ensure that the service provider is compliant with laws in their local jurisdiction, such as Electronic Transactions Act 1999 (Australia, 2011:14-15), as well as laws where their data (in the cloud) may be hosted. The benefits, risks and challenges of records management and cloud computing are applicable to these similar organisations. However, mitigation of these risks needs to be discussed with a cloud service provider beforehand. From an innovation perspective, cloud computing is able to promote innovation within an organisation, if certain antecedents are dealt with. Furthermore, if cloud computing is successfully adopted then it should promote innovation within organisations.

Ndlovu, Mdutshekelwa. "An analysis of teacher competences in a problem-centred approach to dynamic geometry teaching." Diss., 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23786.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of teacher competences or knowledge has been a key issue in mathematics education reform. This study attempts to identify and analyze teacher competences necessary in the orchestration of a problem-centred approach to dynamic geometry teaching and learning. The advent of dynamic geometry environments into classrooms has placed new demands and expectations on mathematics teachers. In this study the Teacher Development Experiment was used as the main method of investigation. Twenty third-year mathematics major teachers participated in workshop and microteaching sessions involving the use of the Geometer’s Sketchpad dynamic geometry software in the teaching and learning of the geometry of triangles and quadrilaterals. Five intersecting categories of teacher competences were identified: mathematical/geometrical competences, pedagogical competences, computer and software competences, language and assessment competencies.
