Recently, the world has been trending toward the use of Smartphone. Today, almost each and every individual is using Smartphone for various purposes benefited by the availability of large number of applications. The memory on the SD (Secure Digital) memory card is going to be a constraint for the usage of the Smartphone for the user. Memory is used for storing large amounts of data, which include various files and important document. Besides having many applications to fill the free space, we hardly have an application that manages the free memory according to the user’s choice. In order to manage the free space on the SD card, we need an application to be developed. All the important files stored on the Android device cannot be retrieved if we lose the Android device. Targeting the problem of handling the memory issues, we developed an application that can be used to provide the security to the important documents and also store unnecessary files on the distributed file servers and retrieve them back on request.

Abstract:
Peer-to-peer network applications has been a tremendous success among end users and has therefore received much attention in academia and industry, as have illegal public file sharing in media. However, private peer-to-peer file sharing between family, friends and co-workers have attracted little interest from the research community. Existing approaches also limit the users by not allowing for native interaction with userspace applications. In this paper we ex- -plore how private file sharing can be made safe, fast and scalable without constraining the users in this aspect. We demonstrate the concept of a private file sharing application utilizing a decentralized peer-to-peer network overlay by creating a prototype with extreme program- ming as methodology. To maximize the freedom of users the network is accessed through a virtual file-system interface. The prototype proves this to be a valid approach and we hope readers can use this paper as a platform for further developments in this area.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate if there is a way a computer can accurately and automatically react on altered configuration file(s) with a minimum of resource utilization and by what means the developer(s) of an application can perform a check of the altered configuration file for their application. In a typical GNU/Linux installation the configuration files are literally counted by the thousands, monitoring these files is a task that for the most part exceeds any system administrator's abilities. Each file has its own syntax that needs to be known by the administrator. Either one of these two tasks could give any system administrator nightmares concerning the difficulty level especially when both tasks are combined. The system administrator could attempt to automate the monitoring tasks together with the syntax checking. There are some tools in the repositories of each distribution for monitoring files but none that lets one monitor and take (predefined or user defined) actions based on what the file monitor reports, the type of file and its contents. A complete tool is not presented in this study, merely a proof of concept that monitoring and taking actions especially with version 2.6.13 (or newer) kernel of GNU/Linux with plugins are quite possible with relatively small computer resource. During this study some questions arose that are worth taking into consideration when a complete monitoring tool is to be developed, amongst others they are: add a trusted user, add both textual and graphical user interface, monitor more than one file path. This study was performed on GNU/Linux CentOS 6 distribution, all programming was done in BASH with an effort to minimize used/installed programs.

Paul, Arnab Kumar. "An Application-Attuned Framework for Optimizing HPC Storage Systems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99793.

Full text
Abstract:
High performance computing (HPC) is routinely employed in diverse domains such as life sciences, and Geology, to simulate and understand the behavior of complex phenomena. Big data driven scientific simulations are resource intensive and require both computing and I/O capabilities at scale. There is a crucial need for revisiting the HPC I/O subsystem to better optimize for and manage the increased pressure on the underlying storage systems from big data processing. Extant HPC storage systems are designed and tuned for a specific set of applications targeting a range of workload characteristics, but they lack the flexibility in adapting to the ever-changing application behaviors. The complex nature of modern HPC storage systems along with the ever-changing application behaviors present unique opportunities and engineering challenges. In this dissertation, we design and develop a framework for optimizing HPC storage systems by making them application-attuned. We select three different kinds of HPC storage systems - in-memory data analytics frameworks, parallel file systems and object storage. We first analyze the HPC application I/O behavior by studying real-world I/O traces. Next we optimize parallelism for applications running in-memory, then we design data management techniques for HPC storage systems, and finally focus on low-level I/O load balance for improving the efficiency of modern HPC storage systems.
Doctor of Philosophy
Clusters of multiple computers connected through internet are often deployed in industry and laboratories for large scale data processing or computation that cannot be handled by standalone computers. In such a cluster, resources such as CPU, memory, disks are integrated to work together. With the increase in popularity of applications that read and write a tremendous amount of data, we need a large number of disks that can interact effectively in such clusters. This forms the part of high performance computing (HPC) storage systems. Such HPC storage systems are used by a diverse set of applications coming from organizations from a vast range of domains from earth sciences, financial services, telecommunication to life sciences. Therefore, the HPC storage system should be efficient to perform well for the different read and write (I/O) requirements from all the different sets of applications. But current HPC storage systems do not cater to the varied I/O requirements. To this end, this dissertation designs and develops a framework for HPC storage systems that is application-attuned and thus provides much improved performance than other state-of-the-art HPC storage systems without such optimizations.

Jatho, Edgar W. III. "A survey of distributed capability file systems and their application to cloud environments." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/43930.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
This thesis considers distributed capability systems as a potential solution to securing data in cloud environments. The U.S. Navy, Intelligence Community and Department of Defense have begun a significant investment to leverage scalable, distributed cloud-based solutions for information sharing. We believe capability systems suggest a promising direction for new platforms, a bold approach drawing directly from mature ideas first explored in the 60s and 70s. We survey the properties and limits of existing distributed capability file systems, as a step toward understanding how capability-based designs might serve cloud-scale systems. We highlight some lessons learned in our observations and find that, while no existing capability-based distributed file system demonstrates all of the desirable security traits observed of smaller-scale capability systems, it should be possible to define and create one that does, using capabilities carefully designed to obey a set of known properties.

Herbreteau, Frédéric. "Automates à file réactifs embarqués : application à la vérification de systèmes temps-réel." Nantes, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001NANT2090.

Full text
Abstract:
We are concern in our thesis by the verification of ELECTRE programs and Embedded Reactive Fiffo Systems (Embedded RFS). These two formalisms allow to model asynchronous reactive systems with event memorisation, along with their environment. Particularly, we focus on the boundedness problem which is seen as a correctness criterion for reactive systems. We prove that this problem is undeciable, thus we provide a testing method as a partial solution

Stakemire, Tonia. "Design of a performance evaluation tool for multimedia databases with special reference to Oracle." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1015975.

Full text
Abstract:
Increased production and use of multimedia data has led to the development of a more advanced Database Management System (DBMS), like an Object Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS). These advanced databases are necessitated by the complexity in structure and the functionality required by multimedia data. Unfortunately, no suitable benchmarks exist with which to test the performance of databases when handling multimedia data. This thesis describes the design of a benchmark to measure the performance of basic functionality found in multimedia databases. The benchmark, called MORD (Multimedia Object Relational Databases), targets Oracle, a well known commercial Object Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS) that can handle multimedia data. Although MORD targets Oracle, it can easily be applied to other Multimedia Database Management System (MMDBMS) as a result of a design that stressed its portability, and simplicity. MORD consists of a database schema, test data, and code to simulate representative queries on multimedia databases. A number of experiments are described that validate MORD and ensure its correct design and that its objectives are met. A by-product of these experiments is an initial understanding of the performance of multimedia databases. The experiments show that with multimedia data the buffer cache should be at least large enough to hold the largest dataset, a bigger block size improves the performance, and turning off logging and caching for bulk loading improves the performance. MORD can be used to compare different ORDBMS or to assist in the configuration of a specific database.

Mantri, Sushil Govindnarayan. "Efficient In-Depth IO Tracing and its application for optimizing systems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50145.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding user and system behavior is most vital for designing efficient systems. Most systems are designed with certain user workload in mind. However, such workloads evolve over time, or the underlying hardware assumptions change. Further, most modern systems are not built or deployed in isolation, they interact with other systems whose behavior might not be exactly understood. Thus in order to understand the performance of a system, it must be inspected closely while user workloads are running. Such close inspection must be done with minimum disturbance to the user workload. Thus tracing or collection of all the user and system generated events becomes an important approach in gaining comprehensive insight in user behavior. As part of this work, we have three major contributions. We designed and implemented an in-depth block level I/O tracer, which would collect block level information like sector number, size of the I/O, actual contents of the I/O, along with certain file system information like filename, and offset in the file, for every I/O request. Next, to minimize the impact of the tracing to the running workload, we introduce and implement a sampling mechanism which traces fewer I/O requests. We validate that this sampling preserves certain I/O access patterns. Finally, as one of the application of our tracer, we use it as a crucial component of a system designed to do VM placements according to user workload.
