Full textA scientifical knowledge of marian apparitions is still to be constructed. Only few studies concerning this object withstand epistemological criticism. The present thesis propose a new approach and a new interpretation of marian apparitions, based on epistemological, historical and anthropological reflections. A scientifically quite acceptable int erpretation of our object can only be based on its original meaning. Marian apparitions so recover unexpected historical and anthropological dimensions : far to form a whole of insignifiant and heteregeneous facts, explainable by simplistic theories, they represent homogeneous and greatest social events who tend to the construction of a radical new "being-insociety", whose sociological pertinence requires careful thought

Full textThe cosmic mystery of Mary draws attention to what the Roman Catholic Church celebrates as her heavenly reign, an aspect of which is the proliferation of Marian apparitions and manifestations around the world particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. This dissertation underscores that these historical interventions are manifestations of the action of the Holy Spirit in the particular figure of Mary and is attentive to the different ways God’s graces flow to the whole people of God without conflating the person of Mary with the Person of the Spirit. The instrumental nature of Mary’s relation to the Spirit in carrying out Christ’s salvific work is the centerpiece of this study. A key aspect of this work is the mutual recognition of non-Christians in that Mary’s appearances to a number of seers is not contingent on their being or becoming Christian. A number of modern apparitions have assumed political significance because of the social turmoil of the periods when they occurred. Of interest here, is an understanding of the Spirit’s implementation in Mary’s intellect and will, and the reception of her apparition messages in ways that are transformative for ecclesial life and all God’s people. This work includes an exposition of some of the scriptural, ecumenical, interreligious, and ecclesiastical foundations for understanding the Spirit’s action in Mary, and their influence on contemporary mariological discourse since the Second Vatican Council. It reviews some of the key insights from the two-thousand year history of Marian apparitions, the complexity of the phenomenon, and the trends observed during the modern period. Vailankanni (India), Zeitoun (Egypt), and Kibeho (Rwanda) are three case studies included based on the persistence of a Marian cult, pilgrim growth, and contemporary sociopolitical and religious concerns. The rise in Hindu nationalism in India, political tensions and growth of pan-Islamism in North Africa and the Middle East, and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda are studied using the historical-critical method and comparative studies of religion within the scope of apparitions, drawing attention to the marginalization of particular demographics based on religious or ethnic origin. Understanding the Spirit’s implementation in Mary enhances the analysis of the implications of these phenomena. The Spirit’s work through Mary’s cosmic mystery has profound, far-reaching significance for the world church and all God’s people. The three cases reveal how Marian apparitions evolve from obscure events in insignificant places to global centers of Christian spirituality. They make known the hidden potential of the gospel to apply Christian revelation to localized, particular challenges in new situations with permanent, prophetic, and eschatological implications. The permanent examines how the repetitive or apocalyptic nature of Mary’s appeals mobilizes the sensus fidelium through the transforming power of pilgrimage, its impact on Marian devotion, and the emergence of new ecclesial movements. The prophetic addresses Christian and interreligious unity through dialogical encounter, equality for all, God’s justice, and the preferential option for the poor. The global reach of Marian apparitions expresses the oneness of Mary operating under the power of the Spirit, accompanying a global humanity-in-pilgrimage towards the eschatological reign of God

Full textThis thesis aims to highlight links between the epicurean philosophy and Vergil’s epic. If the relations between Epicurus’ philosophy and Vergil’s work have been widely discussed, the highlighted interconnections and links mainly deal with his early works, ie. Georgics and Bucolics. On the other hand, it is possible to note that in Aeneas’ epic the footprint of epicureanism are often put on a second plan. Both as in Vergil and in Lucretius and the Epicureans, the topic dealing with the vision and the dream has an important status. This study aims to demonstrate the way the literary interpretation of the differents episodes of dreams and apparitions, that punctuate Vergil’s epic, is a mirror of the epicurean considerations that took part in the philosophical background of the young poet. The way he deals with the subject of the dreams and the apparitions through a codified epic story is compared with Epicurus’ writings and more specifically with Lucretius’ De rerum natura. Epistemological questions linked with the epicureanism, as well an analysis of the vocabulary refering to images and dreams are the main point of the study.through the epicureanism, limited to the texts dealing with dreams and apparitions, the analysis of Vergil’s verses thanks to Lucretius’ work allows us to highlight affinities in terms of the lexicon as well as the topics covered. The marks of an epicurean influence in Vergil’s epic are, as the dreams and the apparitions, of a tenuous essence, but if we look at this carefully, they are nevertheless neither intangible nor elusive

Full textAfter the Irpinia earthquake of November 23rd, 1980, a revival of the Marian devotion was discovered in several localities of Campania. Our work aims to establish the link between the natural disaster and the Marian appearances in two localities of Campania: Casavatore and Oliveto Citra. If those two "acts of God" did not lead to a lasting recognition and thus, to perennial pilgrimages, the same cannot be said with respect to the cult dedicated to Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) that has given rise to a continuously growing devotional enthusiasm in San Giovanni Rotondo. Our work means to demonstrate, through other examples of Marian devotion such as the cult of Our Lady of the Rosary?created at the end of the XIX century by Bartolo Longo at the heart of Nueva Pompeya?that traditional forms of media, associated with technological inventions, are the instruments guaranteeing the continuity of a cult

This dissertation examines the body of literature that formed around anomalous light apparitions (comets, new stars, the aurora borealis, and rainbows) as it explores questions about the representation and response to celestial and meteorological phenomena during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in colonial America. I further consider the ways that these texts’ meanings are informed by rational scientific thought and by other non-scientific or non-rational, emotive, or aesthetic modes of thinking. I consider how these phenomena elicit a set of empirical yet emotionally-charged observational practices that complicate how we understand the roles of the rational and the non-rational in the scientific literature of this period. I argue that non-rational passionate investments are evident within or as part of the period’s rational scientific literature; they act as the impetus for scientific inquiry therefore forming an integral part of the scientific endeavor. This dissertation further explores how the practice of writing about these phenomena generates and facilitates the formation of communities of amateur scientific observers in colonial America. I further investigate how practices of data collection contribute to knowledge about the regular and irregular behaviors of celestial bodies, and how this knowledge impacts everyday practices essential for survival such as farming and travelling. What science writing from this period demonstrates is the ability for multiple ways of thinking to be in play simultaneously; these texts show how several worldviews (i.e. science, Puritanism, popular religion) are intrinsic to each other. Because of their liminality, these texts function outside of traditional categories such science, religion, and natural philosophy. Furthermore, they destabilize traditional conceptions of genre with their blend of rational and non-rational modes of thought and their incorporation of fact and fiction. While I treat these literary texts within their historical contexts, I am also interested in the ways in which these texts reach modern audiences, particularly in academia at a time when the humanities and sciences are positioned against one another.

This thesis is developed based on the following hypothesis: similar to all other cultures around the world and in all periods, Ancient Israel cultivated beliefs in apparitions. From this hypothesis stems a central question: did the Jewish Bible retain vestiges of these beliefs? The research elaborates an answer in three chapters. In the first it establishes a general definition of apparition to, following, apply it to some texts of the Jewish Bible in the form of two basic categories: demons and phantoms. In this sense, seven apparitions are especially commented on ` a zāzēl, Lîlîṯ, the ś e `îrîm, Maḥîṯ, the phantasmagoric hand, Bēs and the ś e rāpîm of the temple of Jerusalem which, while at the same time fitting into the prior categories, they are also grouped in a typology based on elements which establish affinities among them: apparitions of desert places, unwholesome or deadly apparitions, ominous apparitions and benevolent apparitions. In the second chapter, utilizing the methodology of historical-critical exegesis, an analysis of Ex. 4:24-26 is proposed. The goal is to investigate the possibility of the existence of a more ancient version of this text, according to which the son of Zipporah, and not Moses, was attacked in the overnight place by a demon. Confronted with the threat, the mother of the boy carried out the circumcision and pronounced a saying, two acts which could be understood as being part of an exorcism ritual. A monotheistic reading would be responsible for three basic modifications: a) substitution of the demon with YHWH; b) inclusion of Moses in the story, probable cause of the confusion of the masculine personal pronouns and c) reinterpretation of circumcision, which went from being a procedure of exorcism to a sign of belonging to the people of YHWH in the context of the narrative of the exodus of Israel from Egypt (Ex. 1-15). In the third chapter, once again the historical-critical methodology of exegesis is used to analyze 1 Sam. 28:3-25. In comparing with other texts of Deuteronomic character, probable redactional additions were identified which could suggest that there was, in a more ancient stage, a narrative which told of how an anonymous dead ancestor announced the death of Saul at the hands of the Philistines. One does not necessarily perceive a censorship of the practice of consulting the dead, only the exposition of various ways of consulting an oracle. Later, the Deuteronomic work on this literary piece would have transformed Saul into a persecutor of that art, making him, simultaneously, guilty of resorting to that which he himself had forbidden. Beyond this, the original anonymous ancestor evoked by the woman of En-Dor was substituted by the prophet Samuel, whose word is fulfilled precisely because he, according to the Deuteronomic perspective, is an authorized spokesperson of YHWH. Therefore, one can consider Ex. 4: 24-26 and 1 Sam. 28:3-25 as two examples of stories of apparitions in the Jewish Bible.

Full textSymbolism of the Apparition of Leon Bloy is at the origin of his whole work. The shadows of our knowledge about the genesis and the writing of this text require light on the historical factors of this unfinished project and the influences received by the author. The tutelary figure of father Tardif de Moidrey exerts on him the most important influence, in addition to Ernest Hello and Anne -Marie Roulé. A historical research helps to enlighten the reasons for his profound influence on Bloy and the guidelines of his thoughts on a few major themes : a genealogical view of history, the reference to the Middle Ages, the repair through sacrifice and the hope of the « return » of the Jews and of the fulfillment of the prophecies. The authority of the Summa Theologica brings to these themes a philosophical basis, and the cult of Mary gathers them all. Tardif has transmitted to Bloy the idea of applying the symbolic exegesis to the apparitions of the Virgin. This exegesis itself is interpreted in an historical perspective, as well as the Mariology, that Symbolism of the Apparition reflects and extends

Full textOn the 4th of November 1847, Msgr de Bruillard, the Bishop of Grenoble, sets up a commis-sion of inquiry aimed at clearing the way for the doctrinal judgment he will have to pass on the alleged apparition of the Virgin Mary at La Salette on the 19th of September 1846. In doing so is merely applying once again the usual rules of the Church in matters pertaining to the discernment of spirits, but he actually does innovate by rigorously definiting the canonical framework within which this judgment must be exercised, following – in matters regarding the question of canonization – a procedure which, to some extent, faithfully reflected the one already favoured by the De servorum Dei beatificatione et de beatorum canonizatione (1734-1738) by Prospero Lambertini (the future pope Benedict XIV). Even though it aims to serve as a model (adopted by a growing number of bishops having to come to terms with events of apparitions in their dioceses), and however efficient it proves to be, this type of procedure soon meets with a variety of obstacles exposing its own limitations : among these obstacles one could not minimize the increasingly frequent interference of the Holy Office in its dealings with the bishops, before the Second Vatican Council. After the Council, the bishops are given more leeway, but the repercussions – on a world scale – of certain mariophanies will induce the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith to edict in 1978 a set of general Norms, offering the bishops the guiding lines of a roadmap. Nevertheless, these norms will soon become inapplicable, in the face of newly emerging types of mariophanies, whose primary source is the 'Medjugorje case' (1981). Because of its implications – not just religious, but political and societal as well – this mariophany has been dubbed the breaking point apparition, raising the question of how the ecclesiastical Institution should respond to facts and attitudes which, while pretending to speak in the name of the Church, claim the right to disregard part of her decisions, by using as an excuse the need for a more open-minded and a more immediate involvement in the history of mankind – as it appears nowadays ; so much so that, conflicting with the judgments on the authenticity of the case and its relevance for the Church, the claimed fruitfulness of the event runs the risk og beeing viewed as the principal criterion for a judgment on the phenomenon itself

Full textMiracles of the Virgin tell the story of encounters between human beings and the saint, and in the telling the encounter is shared with the community of those whose access to the experience is via reading. In the initial experience as well as in its subsequent re-telling in poetic form, vision, or more precisely the visio corporalis, the visio spiritalis and the visio intellectualis, as defined by St Augustine, has an important role to play. The dividing line between these three levels is a shifting one, but it is possible to see them as corresponding to three types of image associated with the Virgin: those pertaining to her worship, to her visionary appearances, and to epithets used as replacements for her name. All three are necessary components in the portrayal of a heroine whose perfection can be celebrated only in the exuberance of the spoken word and in its variety. The present study analyses the respective contribution of each of these three types of vision by focusing on three clusters of metaphors: flowers (of the fields or of rhetoric), gold (both a regal and a divine attribute), and milk (emblematic of the maternal). It shows how these three combine together to produce a relationship of sweetness and joy which is the counterpart to the joi celebrated in the lyrics of courtly love

Full textBeyond reductionist preconceptions about magic as a spectacle, this thesis defends the idea that magic is a dimension of our experience, of our being-in-the-world. Our study aims at defining the meaning of the artistic experience of magic, existentially and phenomenologically, as an experience of the impossible. It uses a method based on lived experience, involving a constant dialogue between concept and practice. The artist magician is a sculptor of phenomena and a craftsman of the visible. He offers a feeling for the way things appear at the very moment they actually spring forth into existence and an experience achieved in the tension between objectivising representation versus presence as it is felt. Magic, which involves the creative bringing forth of a world of experience, is both the meaning of art and the meaning of existence. Experiencing the impossible reveals the magic of existence which is the awakening of a world which opens up within us, and which opens us to ourselves

The idea of creating Santa Montanha’s Sanctuary, and the village where it is located, originates from narratives about Saint Mary’s apparitions, based on reports of three children from Guiricema – a town located on the countryside of Minas Gerais state – in the nineteen sixties. This religious world, strictly based on Catholicism, was created by the people who lived in the surroundings of the hill where the sanctuary was built. Together, they left their homes and formed a new community, creating a world/cosmos ruled directly by Saint Mary and Baby Jesus themselves. This study analyses the construction of this peculiar world, based on Peter Berger and Thomas Luckman´s theory of the social construction of reality, considering it a process of human activity that allows us to develop and create a world, keeping it functional.

Full textThe thesis analyses Our Ladys appearances in Brazil, trying to understand the social and symbolic process supporting the creation of collective beliefs about these appearances, a process that always start with personal witness about the appearances of Our Lady. In order to analyze that, we realize a case study in the city of Jacareí, São Paulo state. The thesis reveals the process in which these appearances occur, where different factors are fundamental. Among them we shall focus: 1) the relations and connections involving individuals and groups, inserting the apparitions in a net of Mary´s demonstrations, like pilgrimages; 2) the Catholic Church role in the production of ideas and beliefs which give legitimacy to the appearances; 3) the symbolic molding of theses appearances, which are fundamental to that legitimacy; 4) the presence of long terms symbolic elements. Each one of these topics was developed in a separate chapter.

Full textThe collection of virgin maria's miracles of the monastery of guadalupe (extremadura) represents an unexploited bu very interesting corpus. A systematic analysis of the documents wich concern the sixteenth century made possible the reconstitution of pilgrim's religious life. The cult of "santa maria de guadalupe" appears, in this collection, as a very particular one. It possesses a universal dimension, and has several miraculous specializations. But it reveals too constant characteristics of sixteenth century's popular religion. One of these characteristics is the evolution of pilgrimage and the end of medieval roaming. On the other hand, the relation with miraculous facts conduces to an increase of miracle's relates. The cult reveals also a clear difference between the devotion of popular and privileged classes. Finally, it shows, in spite of the influence of counter-reformation's ideas, the popular religion's great requirement of marvellous elements

Full textThe apparitions of the Holy Virgin and Saint Jacques during the battle of Cuzco in 1535 had demonstrated that should the need arise god was on the side of the spanish army. Then the miracles continued and they mostly took place within the frame of the images of the Holy Virgin, and they become a " fait de société " in the last two decades of the 16th century. As a matter of fact the miracles corresponded to purely human aims, in the same way as the cults exported or stagnated. First of all, such miracles were part of the strategy of the Roman Catholic priests who wished to convince the Indians of the truth of their message. Yet the Creoles were also interested. By showing that the Holy Virgin had chosen the New World, and more specifically Peru, to intervene in the lives of men, the miraculous rain enabled them to reject the negative live image to which the native spaniards, the Gachupines, were triying to limit them. They then could claim their place at the top of colonial hierarchy. The miracles, resulting from the collusion between the inhabitants of Peru - as it was their interest - the colonial authorities - who saw it them as a factor of social stability at a time when mining demanded it - and the priest- who wanted to make their preachings-, the miracles became a miraculous rain

Full textThe fashion shows place to visuality dressing proposals on human bodies, generally those of the thin models. In the contemporary context, sometimes they are praised as canons of beauty, and at other times they are questioned about the reality of their corporal shapes and the quality of their presence and action on the runways: they are often seen as clothing hangers. But they are the ones who, allied to the clothes, conform human figures, in attitudes that aim the composition of possibilities of apparition. Our study investigates the process of this put in form, by examining the dressed bodies in fashion shows, using as examples for analysis the bodies in runways of four brazilian brands/designers of the October 2016 season of São Paulo Fashion Week: Animale, Lab, Água de Coco and Ronaldo Fraga. We start from the comprehension of the visuals presented in fashion shows as dressed bodies, in which body and clothes work together for the composition of the form in possibilities of combinations; and the kinetic capacity of body and clothing, an element that dynamizes the human visual. In this sense, we look for this realization of the dressed bodies in fashion shows through their action and their body movements, which are the competence of their sensitive dimension, related, therefore, with culture and space in an intersubjective way. Such a thought urges us to take into account, in this studied put in form, the relation of bodies with the types of fashion shows and with their elements, such as location, sound, props, the whole symbolic atmosphere of the elaborated presentation. The dressed bodies in fashion shows are thus revealed as complex, sensitive and expressive shapes and forms of body leaks

Full textIn addition to the many studies of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, this thesis aims to highlight the emergence and development of the northern landscape in French paintings of the nineteenth century. Even though there have already been some studies done regarding the Normandy and Brittany regions, it is not the case for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais. This never published before research combined with the historical context aims to study and identify the movement of artists within the region whose artistic culture is dense. This will help us understand when and how were developed these achievements. The study also aims to identify and define the emblematic patterns of the region such as belfries, mills, dune areas, marshes ... The study will use a collection of works, forming a catalogue representative of the northern landscape in the nineteenth century

Full textSince the 19th century dockers working on the marseilles docks have been troublesome. They started competing with the porters and consequently traditions were turned upside town. They were quickly negatively perceived by the town society and the various communities made it even worse. Instability, precarity and the lack of definite status were the characteristics of the people working on the marseilles docks. The history of dockers comes along with that of a fairly deprived lower class that was gradually settling in the twenties. Unsupervised without any guarantee they started fighting for their rights very early. In marseilles they soon became a social political and economical stake : an economical one when strikes entailed a decrease in the port traffic, a social one because of their possible influence on the other town workers and the dockers of other harbours. And most of all their political role prevailed on the period spanning between the two world wars. In those days marseilles had a rather agitated political life and this unrest pervaded the docks : through the dockers it is the struggle between the left wing forces and the sabianists which took place. From 1935 the communists succeeded in ruling over the docks and their trade-union became most powerful. This strength allowed the dockers to gain advantages from 1936 to 1939 and the idea of a status became apparent. The dockers had a strategic role to play in the economy and the government decided to grant them a status during world war ii so that the port activities should start again as soon as the conflict was over. The law, passed on the 28 june 1941, gave the dockers a status but at the same time it confined them in a corporation : it is a return to the 19th century porter's society

Full textThe comprehension of the relegation of the human artifacts from the collections of the Museum d'Histoire naturelle (1797) requires connecting objects and knowledge. This issue understands better how the conditions of political production of scientific objects, revealed during the maritime expeditions and the revolutionary seizures, affect classifications. Two series will be connected : on the one hand the cognitive dimension of the collections raised by methodological problems, from a naturalist point of view which classifies through objects and, on the other hand, from the loss of the American possessions until the catch of Algiers, a colonial interval, which explores the Pacific and colonize it. The exclusion of the man-made objects would structure the deep time of the history of nature, while relegating the primitive in the margins of History, condemned to vanish or to be colonized. Behind this relegation, the vision of the Other changes turning from the savage into the primitive

Full textChromosomal rearrangements such as deletions, duplications or Ty1 retrotransposons insertions represent key events in evolution processes. They are responsible for inter- and intra-species variability. However, little is known about the influence of the intra-species variations and the mechanisms responsible for the formation of chromosomal rearrangements. In our laboratory, a genetic screening based on a particular allele of the URA2 gene was developed allowing the selection of revertants carrying spontaneous chromosomal rearrangements in yeast S. Cerevisiae. In order to understand the impact of the genetic background on the occurrence of chromosomal rearrangements, we compared two laboratory strains of S. Cerevisiae, the FL100 strain and the sequenced reference strain S288c. It was thus showed that intra-species variability has an influence on the type of obtained rearrangements and that the variation between the two backgrounds is due to a difference of activity for the Ty1 retrotransposons. The study of the mechanisms allowing the occurrence of rearrangements in genomes was also carried out. Strains of S. Cerevisiae mutated for genes whose products are involved in homologous recombination (RAD52 and RAD59) or non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) (YKU80 et LIG4) were constructed. The results obtained during this study suggest that a Yku80p-independent NHEJ mechanism is involved in the appearance of deletions and duplications. Finally, we considered inter-species variability and genome evolution by an in silico study of two multigenic families coding for permeases
