Abstract:
My final thesis exhibition, Effluvia and Aporia, explores impermanence, loss and uncertainty. I use materials and images in a poetic way, where there is a link between what the work is and what it means. I use looped videos with images of water, light, and dissolving clay to invite a meditative state. I also use materials like tissue paper, paper-mache, and paper thin porcelain tiles to invite fragility and complexity into the viewer's experience. I am concerned with creating an interactive environment that allows for a multiplicity of responses and interpretations from each viewer depending on their unique perceptions. I am interested in impermanence, loss and uncertainty as themes because I find that they are ever present in life. My intention is to explore these ideas and create an experience that allows for the viewer to reflect on them as well.

Abstract : The main object of the present thesis is to study the conceptual elements available in political philosophy which enable us to point out the limits of religion in politics. As the title itself suggests, on the one hand I introduce the pieces of evidence which, in our liberal democratic societies, are the signs of a tension between religious demands and fundamental rights and principles based on secular premises, and on the other hand, I show in which way political philosophical theories succeed in envisioning a limit to the religious discourse when it has political pretensions. The tone of this thesis is eminently political. The first two chapters, as well as chapter five, aim at introducing the issues as such, that is, the quarrels surrounding religion which pervade the societies of France, England and the United States. The goal of such a pragmatic approach is to show that the treatment of religious questions, in society and politics, by political philosophy should not be disconnected from current reality. And reality shows us a comeback of the religious in contemporary Western societies, with its own dangers. With the theoretical approach, the question I raise is what makes the comeback of the religious in contemporary Western societies, so worrisome from the point of view of political philosophy. The main hypothesis is that that comeback causes two evils to society which much be studied by political philosophy: one is social disintegration and the other is the pretension of religion to invade political power.

Abstract:
This work of research aims at showing how aporia and its plural voices pervade D.H Lawrence’s work, be it through his novels, his essays, his poetry, or his paintings. Despite the reader’s desire to give one singular voice and meaning to D.H Lawrence’s work, plural meanings and multiples truths come our way, leaving us facing an uncrossable impasse. The road is paved with deadlocks and places to stumble upon. Indeed, genetic aporia weaves the very fabric of D.H. Lawrence’s first drafts and sketches, and the logocentric and hermeneutic sovereignty of man is put into question. In fact, we have to cross it out as Lawrence’s work reminds us that the logos, and Being, show some resistance, the result of which is to better inscribe aporia into his corpus. The limits of language, of religion, of knowledge, and of the artistic representation of reality resonate now with an everlasting and unanswered question

Abstract:
The main purpose of this dissertation is the integral translation of Plato\'s Lysis. The translation is based on Oxford Classical Text, Platonis Opera, III (Oxford, 1903), edited by John Burnet. Besides the translation, an introductory study on dialogue\'s issues is also part of this research. Despite being framed as one of the definitional aporetic dialogues by many scholars, the Lysis presents a highly philosophical complexity and structure that distinguish it from other dialogues of that group (Charmides, Laches, Euthyphro, Hippias Major). The question \' \' does not appear throughout the text, although it underlies the dialogue; Socrates\' behavior towards his interlocutors is quite diverse, as well as the speakers themselves do not present an alleged knowledge on the issue of discussion. From this standpoint, we attempt to presnt a constructive interpretation of the dialogue that comprises a twofold reading: one concerning the dramatic or dialogic framework, and the other the logical-argumentative context even though these two levels are eventually intertwined. The work offers a valuable lesson about the philosophical discourse that we can apprehend within the intersection of these two levels of interpretation. Insofar as this lesson is also closely linked to the aporias that permeate the entire dialogue, we contend that this twofold reading is intrinsically related to the positive role of aporia in the development of philosophical activity.

Abstract:
This thesis acts as an exploration of the notion of an a priori aporia of the always already diminished subject as opposed to an ideal self-present individual, and explores the efforts of a selection of twentieth century continental philosophy to address the crises of scepticism and metaphysics that beset this tradition and its search for the ‘truth’ of being. I will argue that my atemporal philosophical teleology proves in fact that any attempt to determine the finitude of subjectivity represents an ineluctable desire for metaphysical comfort that can, at times, verge on totalitarianism. Furthermore, the divergent temporal loci of these theorists — and their particular attempts to address these recurrent crises — necessarily calls into question the popular perception of a temporally specific ‘postmodern condition’ afflicting the contemporary subject. Given the repeated failure of philosophical discourse to provide the subject with its raison d’être, a focus on the usefulness of literature in this regard becomes apparent within my theoretical schema, leading to a discussion of several controversial contemporary novels that parallel my proposition of the diminished subject, and refute negative perceptions of them as postmodern and valueless due to an apparent nihilistic ‘anything goes’ attitude. However, rather than resorting to naïve utopianism regarding the positive uses of literature, I argue that these texts reiterate the key theoretical propositions in this thesis with an awareness of the discursive nature of the subject and the a priori condition of the possibility of change which inevitably undermine transcendence. It is my proposition that these texts can be read as fictionalised expressions of the cathartic possibilities of literature, and an innate desire in all subjects for the metaphysics of comfort when faced with the meaninglessness of existence, something exacerbated by the recurrent failure of philosophical and religious discourses to counter the aporia of an always already absent self-presence of subjectivity.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers silence as a problem that is felt particularly acutely in the modern period. The focus is on the silence caused by a general distrust of the representational ability of language, which has manifold manifestations in modern writings. From the existential turn that implies self-cancellation to the symbolist project to create new symbols, modernist writers display an anxiety to speak the unspeakable. This paper’s approach is to offer a metaphoric reading of the role of the Muse as the giver of knowledge and voice in writing practices, and to identify the cause of silence in the confusion over the two distinctive ideas about the goddess. The roots of such confusion are traced to Plato’s epistemological treatises and his exposition of love, as encapsulated in Phaedrus, in which the superimposition of metaphysical knowledge over physical love introduces the aporia into poetry, or literary writing. Subsequent developments of literature, including that of the modernists’, are subject to this aporetic silence. By tracing the trajectories of epistemology and the representation of love up to the eighteenth century, the work shows how the modern problem of silence is triggered by the duality in Kantian epistemology, which is itself a legacy of Platonic metaphysics. Modern silence, therefore, is studied within the critical framework of such metaphysical background, against the metaphoric representation of transcendental imagination as Mother Wit, and its application to the matter of love. The second half of the paper discusses the various responses to this duality found in the ‘transcendental power of imagination’. In the existential writings that defy analytical reason, and the symbolist writings that react against Romanticism, writers struggle to overcome the gap between subjective and objective realities. They therefore fail to give voice to things and feelings without falling back to obscurity or self-erasure – both producing silence on a semantic level. The paper studies works of Hermann Broch and Samuel Beckett to demonstrate the arrival at this great silence, which, though reached via different paths, is the same aporetic silence contained in Platonic epistemology. By examining two works of J.M. Coetzee, this paper also aims to explore the possibility of breaking this silence by going beyond knowledge, and reengaging the service of another Muse her power of love, physicality, and presence.

Abstract: In the following pages, the reader will find a detailed study of what Aristotle considered the most difficult aporia formulated in Metaphysics III (Beta), which is answered in chapter 2 of Book X (Iota): the Eleventh Aporia. In such aporia, Aristotle rivals: (i) the conception assumed by the ancient Physiologoi, which takes the One to be an underlying nature whose being is not exhausted by being One, and (ii) the Platonic-Pythagorean view, which prefers to conceive the One in itself, according to its own determinations and apart from any connection with some reality outside it

Abstract: The Eleventh Aporia results from the breakup of the entire Greek philosophy previous to Aristotle in two manners of conceiving and proposing the first principles (archai), specially the One (to hen): (i) the manner by which Physiologoi conceived the One as a principle, namely, assuming an underlying nature, different from the One in itself, not adequately characterized by the simple fact of being one and which is denoted by the concept of One, and (ii) the manner inaugurated by the Pythagoreans and later endorsed by Plato, marked by the abandonment of the appeal to an underlying nature and by conceiving the One in itself (auto to hen) as a principle, depriving it of any connection with some reality not strictly characterized by being one. Aristotle faces this aporia in Metaphysics Iota 2 and, according to the interpretation I propose: (a) refuses the Pythagorean-Platonic manner of conceiving and proposing principles, (b) endorses the course of action of the Physiologoi, and, in doing so, (c) steps back and retakes the "project" of the Physiologoi at the point where it was interrupted, namely, during the search for a principle of motion. From this scenario, I will try to show that the final outcome of the Eleventh Aporia can be the introduction of the Prime Mover as the properly Aristotelian (and cosmological) candidate to the title of One between the principles

Fytros, Charalampos. "Coping with uncertainty : aporia and play in actuarial and financial practices." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2018. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/129796/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to bring into sharp focus a contradiction that seems to persist in actuarial and financial practice. Specifically, how efforts to manage the uncertain and potentially catastrophic future, via actuarial and financial calculative modeling, fail precisely where they succeed. The purpose is to disclose that the problem with such efforts is not that they are not yet scientifically sophisticated enough, nor that they frequently lack the intuitive judgement which experienced practitioners can bring. Rather, it is that our certainties, which may have either a technical or judgmental origin, are always and already permeated by uncertainties, and vice versa. Thus, what this thesis aims to show is the radical and inescapable entanglement of certainty with uncertainty, or of the technical with the social, which is not simply complementary or oppositional, but in a more fundamental way, aporetic. This aporetic entanglement is conceptualized within the thesis as an ongoing play of difference. Specifically, a play that is ontological and central to what sustains actuarial practice exactly as that. The thesis consists of three papers. The first one focuses on the financial markets and aims to disclose, following a Heideggerian analysis, how investing is ontologically dependent on a prior understanding that dictates what counts as significant, or not. In this respect, financial markets are conditioned not just by the social/technical entanglement, but also by a further entanglement among different styles of understanding. The second paper focuses on the liability side of insurance companies and argues that the so-called financialization of insurance liabilities (i.e., the requirement for a market-consistent valuation of them) does not uncritically expand financial economics (i.e., practices oriented towards the market with a dominant technicalizing aspect) at the expense of actuarial logics (i.e., practices oriented towards the underlying liabilities with an effective contextualizing aspect). Rather, a Derridean autoimmunity process is revealed - one that "auto-deconstructs" the financial sovereign of the market-consistent valuation into its actuarial "other". The third paper focuses on Solvency II, the new regulatory framework for EU insurers since 2016. By taking a close look at the quantitative and qualitative requirements of the new framework, the paper claims that the regulatory text and its accompanying algorithm can never be made unambiguous, or free from fundamental paradoxes. However, instead of adding confusion, this paradoxical quasi-structure ultimately increases the possibilities for understanding the subtleties of the insurance business and its solvency issues. In this context, the paper reconsiders performativity as a play of differences - a rethinking that focuses more decisively on not knowing, rather than on what can be rendered knowable.

In the Plato’s Theaetetus the aporia is one specie of empty philosophical, because it postpones the most admirable definition of knowledge, i. e, the definition as justified true belief. An aporetic Dialogue is a Dialogue without the answer that’s been searched and this is the case of the Theaetetus. Socrates claims some urgent necessities to does not maintain the definition. However, a careful investigation reveals some insufficiency in those counterarguments. Some of them, besides insufficient, are exposed of one summarized way. In this way, it had become necessary an investigation to attain the validity about those refutations, which ended in the Dialogue’s aporia. But despite that, the problem of Theaetetus is, in fact, very difficult. There is, for example, an enormous tendency of amalgamation among the concept of true belief and the concept of logos. The simple definition of logos is an extenuated work. In the 20th century, the concise text of Gettier gave rise to the same discussion that Theaetetus. In a few words, it corroborated with the platonic refutation and attracted much attention to itself. This thesis discusses more specifically about Plato’s Theaetetus, which is the Dialogue delimited and fundamental text to investigation. What is inquired is primarily the legitimacy of the platonic counterarguments, which one of Gettier comes in less proportion. If they are not consistent, then we are yet warranted to carry on defining knowledge as justified true belief. After Theaetetus’ publishment a large amount of epistemologies have been produced and many answers to the problem of Gettier are also, in a certain way, answers to Theaetetus. The epistemic justification that is so discussed nowadays is seems to be the same justificational logos debated in the Theaetetus. The contemporary philosophers search for the logos that the dialoguers probably did not attain. This thesis displays how neither Plato nor Gettier made to refute the tripartite definition. Costa’s suggestion about the necessity of assuming a perspectivist condition and a current condition is, indeed, plausible as the resolution of Gettier’s counterexample. Neoclassic foundationalism of Bonjour is also one alternative too plausible. Indeed, his presupposition of beliefs without necessity of justification let us free of the ancient worry of infinite regress. According to the author, is necessary to presuppose one notion of non apperceptive consciousness, whereby occur the relation between the sensorial experience and the fundamental belief. In part, if the Theaetetus, is adequately investigated, it answers some questions, because, at the end, we can see the insufficiency of the counterarguments. In other, the contemporary doxastology relieves the problem with new proposals. In short, one careful investigation of own Theaetetus allied to one clear and elucidative foundationalism answer, of plausible way, the problem here exposed. However, since that the Theaetetus is the main text to investigation, this thesis stress it more abundantly.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to extend the scope of consideration of the pre-oedipal or pre- symbolic mother-infant relationship by focusing on a 'third' space that exists between them, and the remains of this space in the infant's unconscious. Through the theoretical explication of two non-concepts, the "third aesthetic" and the "O- Function", the thesis endeavours to develop a framework, from a psychoanalytic perspective, which considers how the inauguration of a trace is established so that the infant may seek out or create meaning at a later stage of life following maturation or individuation. The thesis has not however insisted on defining the construct of meaning per se, which is invariably a subjective and existential endeavour or idiom, but is rather concerned with what may provide a possibility for subsequent meaning- making endeavours. The notion of a third space, which alludes to a meeting point of two subjectivities which in turn proliferates a third arena of negotiation, considers other (lirninal) spatial and temporal possibilities that exist (or rather ex-sist) between the mother and the infant. This third time-space (the "third aesthetic"), which takes its cue from "chora/khdra" (as explored by Plato, Julia Kristeva and Jacques Derrida) and the "potential space" (as identified by the psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott), is developed through a consideration of thirdness (or more specifically thirdness under erasure, and the refusal to enclose it within a triad), the aesthetic, metaphor and metonymy, and rhythm. What remains of this third energetic body in the infant's unconscious (the "O-Function") is considered through the tropes of the trace, the gift and cinders, as well as through the ineluctably uncanny rhythms of desistance (of the future-to-come). The thesis focuses critically on what tropological or metaphoric forums may be provided in service of explicating these two 'non-concept' concepts given the problematics of representation.

This paper follows the “state, society and social policies” research line within the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Social Policy and Citizenship, and it is a contribution to the critique of the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964/1985) and the movements arising from it, its consequences in the social policies development in the construction of the historical memory of individuals - with respect to the socio-metabolic mutation of historical subjects into goods predicates - and the possibility of forgiveness beyond the Amnesty Law (Law No. 6.683/79). This is because it is clear that this transition period in the organization of political power has not yet been overcome and understood in its entirety, even after more than 50 years of the authoritarian regime outbreak in Brazil, considering the recent antagonistic judgments handed down by the Supreme Court and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. To encompass the key proposition in the thoughts of Hannah Arendt - that opposes power and violence, revealing the banality of evil - and the ideas of Walter Benjamin - with emphasis on theories that underlie “the concept of history”, therefore, the dialectical relationship between time and space - our intention is to elucidate the perverse logic that has trapped us in a constant present. The goal is to achieve the primary of all knowledge, that is, the understanding of this period through historical research (primary and secondary sources) and seizure of the key categories of / to conceptual analysis of the dictatorship, forgiveness and memory in reference to the three fronts: the first one deals with the culture of impunity and oblivion still engendered under the aegis of the authoritarian regime (1964-1985) and based on the amnesty law as an obstacle to criminal prosecution; the second seeks to understand the (im)possibility of generalization of forgiveness and domination without a subject; and, finally, this work will be treated from the danger of building a memory based on narratives, experiences, the playback of testimonies and files without all these going through the test of reason and public debate. Therefore, we will make use of the inductive and dialectical approach methods, which will be developed in an interdisciplinary way, since the theme interface wealth so requires. The methodology is guided by qualitative connections from historiographical review, i.e. the use of written records of historical subjects and interviews with women who have lived and narrated their experiences. They were defined from the applied content analysis through narratives and texts made by women activists who lived through the dictatorship period - key categories and numerical evaluation of the occurrence frequency of certain terms, expressions, buildings and categorized references. Senses, meanings and memories, their lines overflow time and space and provide the ability to understand the country history through individual and collective memories.

Abstract:
This work studies the presence of irony in a set of works by Carlos Pasquetti in photography and in Super-8, made from the late 1960s to the present, in which the artist presents his own body in performance actions. I want to question the presence of irony in the indefiniteness of a boundary between his performatized self-images and the artist himself. The use of irony, according to Carvalho's indication, is not intended to underestimate the observer's intelligence, but rather to solicit an active participation in the formulation of individualized interpretations. The irony, which participates in the construction of the artist's work, is Interpellated by the research on its function, its action in turn, to Interpellate the viewer, provoking in him the confluence, the generation and the discovery of one's own truth about art.

Allick, Steven. "The common forms of contemporary videogames : a proposed content analysis model." Thesis, Teesside University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10149/254616.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate trope usage in videogames, including the emergence of undiscovered ‘videogame’ tropes, and to create a new model for videogame categorisation using these tropes. This model serves to complement genre as a means of distilling videogame contents. The investigative work formed two parts, initially considering how videogames use existing rhetorical tropes such as metaphor as expressive and communicative devices and secondly to analyse videogames as a source of shared literary tropes. Each shared literary trope was validated as a common form of expression (referred to simply as 'common form'), where its presence was proven in a substantial sample of videogames. Common forms were gathered through a wide-ranging investigation of ten mainstream genres one at a time and in isolation to arrive at a pool of genre-specific common forms. The most closely related forms combined, with the help of relationship modelling techniques. A set of common forms capable of representing the contents of any videogame was reached. The result is a powerful hierarchical content model allowing a game to be described in terms of its common form usage profile. Common forms can effectively describe games which span several genres and differentiates between games which appear similar on the surface e.g. within the same genre hence aiding effective classification. Common Forms were proven to exist on a number of different hierarchies ranging from those specific to a particular game, to a game type (genre) and even to those which are universal and hence can be observed within any modern videogame. Finally, it was possible to see the very core or 'heart' of the functioning videogame, the never-ending competition between player resources such as energy, ammunition or shields, the 'player status' and the threats, challenges or obstacles the game's systems throw at the player, the 'game status'. The model does have considerable potential for application in educational settings such as college and university game development or appraisal classes and further development and testing would provide an effective tool for industry use.

Abstract:
This writing goes through the ink of painting through its own. It has this body to share, both fraternal and irreconcilable. Here the ink of writing sought to pave a liquid way in painting, giving to its movement the trembling of color, which is a gesture of matter itself. As for my gesture, drunk by the paper and withdrawn in folds of waves, operates a drift to the white of a page on the table, that unfolds to this singular object that is the thesis in fine arts. In fact, as painting accompanies in its shadowy wake the questioning of a gaze, its course without outline, writing from painting, turns on its own object - from one ink to another. The construction of a discourse in touch with the wandering of the studio is delicate. It merges its body resonant with images with that of words from poets, working an unknown language in the very core of the impasse that constitutes words, access to speech. The painter's voice is the only one I know. It is the result of the abandonment and divestment at work. It engages thought in making, in the midst of a deposition which is, multiple, that of a body of ink, of a radiant painting, of a gesture and its removal, of a voice and its fragments. Deposition calls for the ground. It is that very ground that is being discussed throughout this writing. A grounding, as foundation but also as what melts under the steps. Liquid, fluid, moving. A release that is also an anchor, a tie that is also an overflow

Abstract:
In the works of the tetralogy of gândara of Carlos de Oliveira, everything happens as if the author – thenarrative authority, or some other demiurgic intelligence – had opened since Casa na Duna, a terriblePandora’s Box from which escape evil incantations immediately dissolved in a blurred writing. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This work is about some ways of affirming the primacy of horror over the philosophical attitude, understood as the one guided by the Socratic “the only thing I know is that I don’t know anything”. The focus is the horror in Lévinas and in Lovecraft, which is analised in the light of a reading of Reza Negarestani’s Cyclonopedia – complicity with anonymous materials. The discussion is developed as a struggle to disarticulate Agamben’s anthropological machine, passes through J. M. Coetzee, Bruno Latour and Quentin Meillassoux and arrives at the idea that levinasian love is not a love for the other, but for horror, as well as at the idea that philosophy is a saturation of the system of affordance which engenders a radical openness to the horrifying Outside.

Abstract:
Using Hollis Frampton's 1971 film (nostalgia), this thesis works to negate the dominance of the concept over the artwork. This will be accomplished by thinking through (nostalgia), rather than about it. In other words, (nostalgia) will be the logical grounds upon which the concepts must prove themselves. The very form of the film will determine the manner in which the concepts develop. This thesis strives to understand (nostalgia) not so much by analyzing it from outside of its own immanent purpose, but through an imitative analysis. Using this method, texts by Theodor Adorno, Roland Barthes, and Ernst Bloch will be interpreted. Therefore, the concepts of these thinkers will act according to the objective demands of the film itself. This is an analysis that does not focus on the artwork as a topic, but as an epistemic model for analyzing aesthetic concepts.

The main objective of this research is Instituição Assistencial Educacional Amélia Rodrigues, located in Santo André-SP. The context of this search is the period which takes 1989 to 2002, and refers to social policies that were developed in Santo André's district, once they are an inflection point in approach of "social issues", as much to the project of reconstruction of district' s identities, thus of the project Regional Strategic Planning. This research seeked, in these programs, comprehend the emphasize to the volunteer work within a critical point of view about the roll of Non Governamental Organizations (NGO's) into the execution of neoliberal policies. The organization was founded in 1979, as bunâ1e up activities promoted by Social Assistant Department of "Centro Espírita Bezerra de Menenzes", which emerges as an organization that blows the line between traditional philanthropy and the redeployment into "social entrepreneurs", especially during the decades of 1980 and '1990. As long as the institution consolidate e rearrangements to the "third sector" administrative way, lined up to district strategic planning. In this way, is possible to detect an aporia between the speech based on citizenship, at the same time theirs focus in social management built obstac1es to theirs programs and activities, in the sense of goes beyond the line of social needs, taking down the emancipation perspective of struggle

This work is concerned with the Refutation of idealism proposed by Kant in the Critique of Pure Reason, where we intend, initially, through a critical and conceptual analysis that the subject demands, to address the questions that Kant raises against skeptical idealism, and also, to position ourselves as to the sufficiency of the proof proposed by Kant as a solution to the problem of the real existence of objects outside consciousness, both in the Fourth paralogism (edition A) and in the Refutation of idealism (edition B). Later we will show that the arguments of the Fourth paralogism of the A edition together with the Refutation of the idealism of the B edition are sufficient for the refutation of the skeptic and finally prove the real existence of the external objects.

The world is experiencing a religious revival. Some have interpreted it as the religion revenge for the long years of atheism, whilst others see it as a last cry of life. The present thesis approaches the mutual interpenetration among religiousness, education and post-modernity. Modernity was not able to establish a dialogue with religion, and at the same time, religion condemned modernity. Will such disagreements enter the post-modern age? We intend to raise some points in common between religiousness and post-modernity in order to promote an effective dialogue between them, aiming above all at the education of future generations. Firstly, we present modernity and describe some of its fundamental features: linear science, metanarratives and powerful reasoning, history as linear progress, religious secularization, illustration and ethical code based on the human nature. Then, as a counterpoint, we characterize post-modernity as a paradigm shift: complexity and science, dissolution of the metanarrative and weak reasoning, the new as the end of the history, nihilism and the chances of religion, the new aporetic ethical code and the large use of metaphors. The afore mentioned description raises an issue: is there post-modernity or not? We present an overview of some important authors: Habermas, Giddens, Küng, Lyotard, Patella, Vattimo, Heidegger. An analysis of the prefix post and its interpretations will be carried out. The next topic is the approach to the religious dimension under the viewpoint of the new paradigm of the end of grounding and of metaphysics, as well as non-ambivalent and non-aporetic ethics. By claiming that God is dead, Nietzsche brings new perspectives into light for religiousness and religion, once if metaphysics can not prove that God exists, it can not prove He does not exist either. Now, a process of religion built from kenosis, from despoiling and unpretentious metaphysics begins. At the same time it frees us from the single dimension of omnicomprehensive reasoning, post-modernity opens the human being’s perspectives to dimensions that were lost, above all about the hospitality and singularities of the other. Reason is not dead; the worship of reason is. Eventually, based on such reflection, we introduce the contribution of education to such dialogue among religion, religiousness, faith and post-modernity. In a comprehensive view of the human being, education is also challenged to bring up future generations within the culture of complexity. We are interconnected to each other and with everything. The most comprehensive point in common is the protection and promotion of dignity, of any type of life. The new generations know that we are living two interconnected crises: the ecological and the social one. The answer is in going from the ambivalence of fixation and fluctuation to the aporia of love. Religions are aware of such fixation, and post-modernity is aware of fluctuation. Love is the synthesis of both religion and post-modernity. Life is so jeopardized that no one shall deny a contribution, denouncing and making announcements, for the generation of a new culture. Education, above all at school, is challenged to give priority to professional competence, with excellence being the same as efficiency, but also with the social sensibility, with excellence as effectiveness. The reason is in line with intuition, imagination and creativity. After all, the poor should not ever suffer and die without the opportunity to live with dignity and in peace.

This thesis aims to critically address the concept and implementation of aid-seclusion in the society of the spectacle, with the allegory of the Brazilian liberal democracy in contradiction with the idea of justice and the current stage of capital's structural crisis. However, what is in fact the aid seclusion will be singled out which are the guiding social security principles and how it outlines the Social Security, with special emphasis on the period between the Brazil Federal Constitution of 1988 to 2013 The answer to that question is far from simple, nevertheless, we insist that there seems to be, at first, an easy answer to this question. The old dichotomy between good and evil can not be easily diluted, even if the answers are shown subservient to the logic of capital. In this context, the role and purpose of the State shall be concomitantementes evaluated under the aegis of the ethical-moral subject is supplanting the subject-commodity.

This dissertation is a critical proposition that aims to analyze the current crisis of the labor movement and the capital's claim process, using SINTRACOM - the Construction Union located in Bahia - as allegory. This is because the struggle between capital and labor suffers from the disruption of the ideological foundations of its historical existence marked by the pursuit of the working class for change and adaptation to the socio-economic system established with the metabolic goal of achieving better living conditions. The former environment in which the revolutionary spirit led to an atmosphere focused on the need for proletarian organization to tackling issues related to labor exploitation and the profit concentration suffers from the current drain of the debate. Thus, the legitimacy of the Brazilian trade union movement will be evaluated from Vargas to the Constitution of 1988. Howevwe, the flags of struggle on behalf of more jobs, better wages, reduced working hours without wage cuts, will be unfurled under the guidance of Critical Theory on the agenda of the main demands of the unions at the expense of the historical goal of social emancipation.

Abstract:
Reading a fiction by Gracq feels similar to lovers’ delight. To become a Gracq reader, you must accept to be delighted, captured and enchanted all at once. The hermeneutic dispossession experienced through Gracq’s fiction is clearly erotic. No matter how secondary, thin and sporadic, the theme of eroticism may be, it seems to be running throughout the lost profile of the text. All set up and cleared of its substance, the sexual scene disappears from the eyes of the reader-voyeur whose expectation is frustrated. Fiction manages to cover up sex by setting desire within the plot and the reading. The presence-absence of erotic fantasy, as stereotyped and obsessive as it may be, is best consecrated at the crossroads of three impossible matters: sex, women and death. Eroticism by Gracq turns out to be a void around which the reader is waltzing and that the writing manages to grasp. Is the path of eroticism aporetic? It is not that this path is a dead end but rather that the reader is invited to advance and digress in this aporia. Eroticism is always moved, buried within the palimpsest of the landscape. With his successive unmoulding and moulding of words, it becomes clear that language is eroticised with Gracq. He doesn’t picture sex, he features it in his text until it pleases him –all this in the other, that is to say the reader’s eyes. In Julien Gracq’s work, the libidinal issue of literarity is at stake: Gracq’s eroticism transfigures flesh into a pulpit. From sex to text, the author takes on a posture of seduction. The text forms a screen between him and the Other, that is to say the reader. Sex has become text, limen, a border, an essential in-between. It has become the hymen, a touching space between one and the other. The meeting, though often portrayed as impossible, can then happen

Abstract:
The obvious contradictions in Schiller's aesthetics generally receive little attention. They are either provoking perplexity or raising doubts about his qualifications as a philosopher. It is precisely at this juncture that the present work wants to tackle the challenge. Schiller's contradictions are to be understood as symptoms of the fundamental problems underlying Enlightenment thought and, by extension, modern subject philosophy (Habermas, Foucault). In analysing the aporetic structures of Schiller's intended politics of beauty, our work - divided into three parts - first deals with the problem of political and poetic representation, primarily regarding Rousseau. Second, we aim to explain the idealistic overreach of the sublime within the evolution of Schiller's theory of tragedy. The rupture between Don Karlos and Wallenstein marks a transition from the tragic to the trauma of history as a return of the repressed. In this context, Wallenstein can be seen as an aporetic figure himself. The third and final part confronts Schiller's aporias - which are regarded as a result of his futile attempt at anthropopoiesis - with Adorno's constructions of the aporetic. In Adorno's philosophy, one encounters a negative anthropology that, despite the (postmodern) swan song to the subject, does not shy away from exploring the question of man “in the fullest sense of the word” (Schiller)

Gray, Michael E. "Reading Ineffability and Realizing Tragedy in Stuart Moulthrop's Victory Garden." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1188.

Full text
Abstract:
Victory Garden, Stuart Moulthrop’s 1991 classic hyperfiction, presents a nonlinear story of U. S. home front involvement in the First Gulf War in a way that facilitates confusion and mimics a "fog of war" sort of (un)awareness. Using Storyspace to build his complex narrative, Moulthrop incorporates poetry, fiction, historical references, and low-tech graphic novel type elements. Among the graphic components are all-black and all-white screens that function as variables. Overtly, these screens speak of closure and signify unconsciousness; however, their nonverbal role may also be linked to the ineffability trope as used by Dante Alighieri and re-interpreted by contemporary linguist Ruiging Liang. To date, critics and meta-readers have incorrectly assumed that the protagonist, Emily Runbird, becomes a fatality. By failing to read her life or death as undecidable, we deny the fiction its full power as a postmodern interpretive dilemma. This assumption plays into what might be posited as Moulthrop’s real thesis: syllogism in a corrupted (war time) information system is potentially tragic. A summary of theories and critical approaches relevant to the blank screen’s use as interstice together with sample engagements with relevant texts—reading Victory Garden, as per Wolfgang Iser’s phenomenological approach, Stanley Fish’s reader response theory, and Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction—prove Victory Garden, to be a challenging but consistent literary breakdown (staged malfunction of reading habits). Ultimately, ineffability is shown to be a reading strategy and the action Aristotle characterizes as key to the definition of tragedy is seen as performed by the reader. Moulthrop dangles the question about Emily’s demise as a critical reading moment prone to corruption. The classical anagnorisis is not Emily’s; the revelation Moulthrop intends is reserved for the reader and is precipitated by the need to resolve aporia.

Abstract:
This study uses the concept of aporia to develop an analysis of Henrik Ibsen's writing, with specific focus on his last eleven plays. From a philosophical, psychoanalytical or poetic point of view, the aporia is that which jeopardizes discourse, exposing its failings and problematizing the production of meaning. The notion of aporia, taken as a heuristic tool, therefore provides a means to examine the systematically open-ended nature of the plays. The study identifies: an ironic process which serves to deconstruct discursive practices, an existential dimension to the plays, a specific form of theatricality and various dramatic figures bearing out the critical nature of Ibsen's work. In accordance with a qualitative shift in Ibsen's work [from The Master Builder on], the chronological analysis of the dramas is divided in two parts. The overall aim of the research is to assess to what extent and in what ways Henrik Ibsen’s theatre investigates fiction's impact on the world of the reader - audience

OTTOBRINI, Tiziano.

Full text
Abstract:
On Damascius' "De principiis": the main focus of this essay wants to be the analysis – both historical and speculative – of the last Neo-platonic philosophy after Proclus from the privileged point of view of the finest metaphysical treatise surviving about the year 529 (closing of Platonic Academy by means of Justinian edict). At least three respects must be pointed out: I) Damascius aims to consider radically not only the One as the highest principle but also that principle which is besides the One; as a result his metaphysics becomes a protology (similar to Dionysius the Areopagite's hypermetaphysics, but rationally), since he does not proceed from the One downward but mainly from the One upward, towards the apophatic principle. II) The first Italian version of the treatise has planned on highlighting the rhetorical strategy tinged with Damascius' research: not only is the last scholar an aporetic philosopher but also his modus scribendi is euporetic. The perspectives that arise from aporetic hermeneutics shed light on logos as open wide, in order to glimpse the ineffable as ineffable, setting it free from rational implications specially through endeixis, hyparxis and intelligible labour pains. III) Since the primum primorum is ineffable and since the whole comes from the ineffable, all of the enads and of the triads of Neo-Platonic theoretical building are ineffable and essentially unknowable; this is not scepticism because of the nature of the first principle: it is known as unknowable, which is the rational way to preserve its apophatic (and not simply cataphatic) trascendence. Therefore it will be argued that Damascius' rational mysticism shows hypermetaphysical ineffable is both above the One and just inside each level of human thought: logos is so strong to go beyond itself somehow.
