Abstract:
Apiculture plays a vital role in maintaining a genetically diverse ecosystem and is an economic activity that contributes to the development of rural communities, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of beekeepers. However, despite the presence of over forty thousand beekeepers in Peru, there is currently no cartographic information available on optimal areas for the development of apiculture. Our study focused on assessing the suitability of land for apiculture development in rural and indigenous communities within the Amazonas Department in northwest Peru. We integrated biophysical and socioeconomic criteria using the Multiple Criteria Evaluation (MCE) technique, in conjunction with state-of-the-art geoinformation and earth observation techniques, to model and validate land suitability for supporting apiculture. It was identified that suitability is influenced by biophysical criteria (65%) and socioeconomic criteria (35%), resulting in highly suitable areas covering 315.6 km2 within the territory of peasant communities, 128.4 km2 within native communities, and an additional 41.4 km2 within conserved areas. Furthermore, to validate our results, we combined the use of high-resolution satellite imagery and visits to artisanal producers. This research provides valuable insights for spatiotemporal land use planning, emphasizing apicultural activity as a driver of rural development and biodiversity conservation. Consequently, this study contributes as a management tool to promote apicultural activities as support for rural development and in local-level decision making.

Abstract:
The importance of apiculture to the improvement of rural livelihoods and the condition of ecosystems cannot be overemphasized. However, globally, the level of beekeeping is still low. Therefore, it is important to examine the potential to develop apiculture, the extent of beekeeping, and the factors for practicing it in various places. This study explores these themes, focusing on Same District in Tanzania. Two wards with apparently great potential to engage in beekeeping were purposefully selected, and one village was selected from each ward. Structured and in-depth interviews were conducted and remote sensing and geographic information system were deployed to obtain the land cover map indicating the potential to develop apiculture. It was found that Same District has enormous potential to develop apiculture, including, forests, which cover 17,430 hectares, equivalent to 2.8% of the district’s total area, woodland, which covers 65,358 hectares (10.5% of the total area) as well as extensive agricultural land and water bodies. Further, a good road network makes the district more potential to apicultural development. Despite this state of affairs, only 9.5% of the respondents were beekeepers. Low practicing of beekeeping is attributed to limited knowledge, bees’ aggressiveness, lack of capital and lack of access to suitable areas to situate beehives. Moreover, lack of modern beekeeping skills, conflicts, deforestation, bees’ absconding behaviour, and drought hinder the apiculture development. Therefore, it is recommended that farmers be educated on modern beekeeping and environmental management practices to improve bee forage.

Abstract:
The symbiotic relationship between bees and the environment underscores the potential of apiculture as a sustainable practice. Bees, as pollinators, play a crucial role in ecosystem health and biodiversity conservation. Their pollination services are essential for the reproduction of numerous plant species, including many crops that constitute the backbone of agricultural economies. Beekeeping can diversify income sources, reducing dependence on single crops and enhancing household resilience to economic shocks. The aim of this paper is to explore the multifaceted role of apiculture as a tool for sustainable rural development. In conclusion, apiculture holds immense promise as a tool for sustainable rural development, offering a pathway towards economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental stewardship. By harnessing the synergies between bees, biodiversity, and community development, beekeeping has the potential to transform rural landscapes and livelihoods. However, realizing this potential requires concerted efforts to address the challenges and barriers that hinder the widespread adoption of beekeeping practices. Through collaborative action and integrated approaches, it can unlock the transformative power of apiculture and build resilient, vibrant, and sustainable rural communities for generations to come.

Abstract:
There is urgent need to rescue Nigerian economy from deluge of crisis it is been confronted with atthe present time. To achieve this, it is pivotal to explore various potentials available in the country to solve her problem. Therefore, this paper examines the potential of apiculture industry in social and economic development of the nation. Hive products such as beewax, propolis, pollen and royal jelly are known to have contributed largely to the economic development of advanced countries like China, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, Hungary, Australia and Canada. While the practice provides job opportunities for people of all classes, it also boosts productivity of other agricultural crops. Honey from Nigeria will command higher demand and prices in the world market for its medicinal and antimicrobial qualities, thereby serving as a good foreign exchange commodity in international market. As part of its contribution to economic growth, apiculture is a good source of income for beekeepers, it involves the use of little land. It empowers small scale farmers and also does not damage the environment. The paper also stressed that apiculture is not only important for generating income, it also curbs against rural migration. Apiculture protects the environment and also an important non-timber forest product.

Abstract:
Ukraine is compelling in looking for ways for its agriculture products in new markets, like European or Asian, in today's realities. One of the agriculture branches, which is promising in looking for new markets, is considered beekeeping. This industry provides high-quality, nutritious, biologically active products and also allows to enter Ukrainian farmers in the international markets. Beekeeping is not only the direction of agricultural industry, but long time respected industry. UN organization says that beekeeping can be a key element to problem solving the global food crisis. Honey is a product that is one of the first to enter the level of trade relations. Currently, the global honey market is considered not only as maximal globalized as possible, but also one, wich often suffers to falsifications, therefore the control of the quality and safety of beekeeping products is the key to the success of the aforementioned industry. The purpose of this article was to analyze the development of beekeeping in the Zhytomyr region. Zhytomyr region, in some its areas, can make the honey production like a business card. The studying and comparison of information about beekeeping development was carried out in the context of the districts on the basis of statistical data from the Main Directorate of Veterinary Medicine of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Zhytomyr region. In the article presented the analysis of the information about the number of apiaries and the number of api-families, which was registered in the different districts of the Zhytomyr region. The vast majority of the apiaries are privately owned in Zhytomyr region. Only less than 1% percent of the apiaries are in the public sector. This case is complicating the quality control of products. We estimated the middle size of the apiary. These intents were based on the number of the bee-families and numerous of bee-gardens in the regions of the Zhytomyr region. The percentage of apiaries certification was determined, which was a marker of quality and safety of the beekeeping products held in these farms. This index reaches 100% in some regions. Laboratory tests of detecting bee-diseases showed predominantly a positive epizootic situation in regional bee-farms.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the role of the stingless bee Melipona beecheii in beekeeping practices in the Yucatán Peninsula, México, in the nineteenth century. Native to Yucatán, the Melipona bee is capable of producing large amounts of honey and has been bred by Maya communities for over three thousand years. In the twentieth century, the Melipona population declined with the implementation of modern apiculture, a system designed to maximize the production of honey and wax with the European native honeybee, Apis mellifera. Previous scholarship on beekeeping has labeled the development of modern apiculture and the systematic expansion of the European honeybee across the Americas as a success story. However, these studies do not consider the cultural, economic, and social transformations brought by the introduction of Apis mellifera in environments that were already rich in bee biodiversity. In order to provide some clues about the impact of—and responses to—modern apiculture, this article focuses on the moment before this process occurred in the Yucatán Peninsula, when Melipona was still environmentally, culturally, and economically significant. The author argues that, far from being an unchanging cultural practice doomed to be superseded by modern apiculture, Melipona beekeeping continued to adapt in sophisticated ways to a modernizing world. During a period of upheaval, extraction of natural resources, environmental exploitation, violence, and Indigenous peoples’ defense of their land, the Melipona continued to be the only domesticated bee species used for beeswax and honey extraction in the entire peninsula during the nineteenth century.

Abstract:

Comparative bibliographical study on the sustainability of apiculture ventures of Paraíba

The development of sustainable agricultural activities has been an alternative for income generation used by farmers throughout Brazil, being beekeeping is one of the activities developed. The Brazil presents a set of development-friendly aspects of beekeeping activity, ranging from appropriate weather conditions up to the diversity of native plants. The rational creation of bees Apis mellifera L. is one of the zootechnical activities that more has grown in recent years in the Northeast of Brazil, mainly by offering low cost of deployment and maintenance. The State of Paraiba is also trying to use beekeeping as an alternative source of income generation, especially in family enterprises located in rural communities. Therefore, the objective of this study is to conduct a literature search to measure and compare the environmental and sustainable aspects of cooperatives and associations of beekeepers to eight municipalities in the State of Paraíba, Brazil. For this, we used the indicators: index of quality of life and Sustainability Index. Thebibliographical analysis revealed an unsatisfactory result regarding the sustainable aspects of apiculture enterprises studied.

Abstract:
Bulgarian apiculture has undergone a number of transformations since the accession of our country to the European Union. A significant part of these changes was due both to the opportunities provided for institutional support under a number of CAP programs and pillars and to the access to the Union's Common Market. Compared to many other member states, Bulgarian producers have focused more on organic production, based on the expected higher economic results. Bulgarian apiculture has become largely an export-oriented sub-industry and direct sales to local consumers have changed. In the context of a pandemic, the role of short food supply chains, which are expected to meet the needs of the population, was considered. The analysis of short supply chains and in the case of bee products - direct sales is important in order to assess their potential for development of the sector. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamics of direct sales of honey in Bulgaria for the period after 2014, examining their impact on the development of the sector. In order to achieve this goal it is necessary to solve the following tasks: to study the dynamics of direct sales of honey in Bulgaria for the period after 2014; to analyze the impact of these changes on the development of the sector and to present the main trends in it, and proposing solutions for its sustainable development.

Abstract:
Supporting local and central authorities in decision-making processes pertaining to environmental planning requires the adoption of scientific methods and the submission of proposals that could be implemented in practice. Taking into consideration the dual role that honeybees play as honey producers and crop pollinators, the aim of the present study is to identify and utilize a number of indicators and subsequently develop priority thematic maps. Previous research has focused on the determination of, and, on certain occasions, on mapping, priority areas for apiculture development, based mainly on the needs of honeybees, without taking into consideration the pollination needs of crops that are cultivated in these areas. In addition, research so far has been carried out in specific spatial entities, in contrast to the current study, in which the areas to be comparatively assessed are pre-chosen based on their geographical boundaries. The information derived from this process is expected to help decision-makers in local and regional authorities to adopt measures for optimal land use and sound pollination practices in order to enhance apiculture development at a local scale. To achieve this target, the study incorporates literature about the attractiveness of crops and plants to pollinating honeybees as well as the pollination services provided by honeybees, in combination with detailed vegetative land cover data. The local communities of each municipality were comparatively evaluated, by introducing three indicators through numerical and spatial data analysis: Relative Attractiveness Index (RAI), Relative Dependence Index (RDI), and Relative Priority Index (RPI). Based on these indicators, attractiveness, dependence, and priority maps were created and explained in detail. We suggest that a number of improvement measures that will boost pollination or honey production or both should be taken by decision-makers, based on the correlations between the aforementioned indicators and the exanimated areas. In addition, dependence maps can constitute a powerful tool for raising awareness among both the public and the farmers about the value of honeybees in pollination, thus reinforcing bee protection efforts undertaken globally. Attractiveness maps that provide a thorough picture of the areas that are sources of pollen and nectar can serve as a general guide for the establishment of hives in areas with high potential for beekeeping.

Abstract:
A survey was undertaken to characterize the honey production value chain and identify the challenges, limitations, and opportunities for beekeepers in Kayonza District, Eastern Rwanda, in light of the stagnation of the apiculture industry. The majority (86%, n = 100) of the beekeepers were adult males. Most of the respondents (71%) lacked primary level education. The majority of the hives were made from hollow tree logs (40%), tree barks (12%), banana leaves/bark (11%), cow dung (8%), mud (7%), grass (6%), tree leaves (6%), and the rest (20%) were improved beehives, particularly Langstroth hives. The hive pests encountered were hive beetles (25%), small black ants (19%), wax moths (12%), lizards (8%), termites (7%), birds (6%), mites (3%), and mice (2%). Fifty-five percent of the respondents hung their hives on trees to prevent pest invasion with 95% effectiveness, 25% frequently smoked their hives with 85% effectiveness, 16% cleared the bushes around apiaries with 55% effectiveness, and 4% used traditional plant insect repellents with 35% effectiveness. Forty-one percent of the respondents lacked adequate information on beekeeping, 25% had inadequate time to work on apiaries, 24% had inadequate technical knowledge and implements, and 10% needed additional labour for managing apiaries. Based on the results of this study, beekeeping in Kayonza is still largely traditional, characterized by the use of antiquated production methods and underutilization of available marketing channels. Perceptions in the district are that beekeeping is for the poor and illiterate. Challenges and limitations of beekeeping in Kayonza District include lack of education, gender bias, pests and diseases, absconding and swarming of bees, high costs, and lack of modern apicultural equipment. However, the potential for developing beekeeping enterprise (opportunities) is immense given the abundance of wild bee populations, possibility of women participation, abundance of honey collection centres (market), and availability of technical support from Government and development agencies. In conclusion, this study advocates the need for intervention measures to educate and promote production and marketing of quality honey, tackle pest and disease for beekeepers and boost Rwanda’s apiculture industry.

Abstract:
Apiculture is an important industry closely related to the national economy and people’s livelihoods. Beekeepers’ behavior is an important factor affecting the yield, quality, and benefits of apiculture. However, there is a lack of a systematic understanding of the long-term changes in beekeeping decisions made by beekeepers. Using panel data, we analyzed the dynamic trends and related influencing factors of decisions made by beekeeping models, honey source plant selection, and the migration flow space of beekeepers from 2009 to 2020. The results showed that the proportion of the LMB model decreased, while the PAB and SMB models continued to increase, the frequency of utilization of the main nectar source plants for honey collection decreased, and the concentration of migratory flow of beekeeping increased. Behavior of beekeepers from 2009 to 2020 showed a certain degree of spatial contraction, which seriously restricted the effective use of nectar plant resources. Family attributes, economic status, beekeeping models, and disaster conditions directly or indirectly affected beekeepers’ decisions. We propose a series of recommendations to facilitate the transformation and advancement of the Chinese bee industry. This study promotes an understanding of sustainable development of the bee industry in China and other countries worldwide.

Abstract:
Habitat loss has reduced the available resources for apiarists and is a key driver of poor colony health, colony loss, and reduced honey yields. The biggest challenge for apiarists in the future will be meeting increasing demands for pollination services, honey, and other bee products with limited resources. Targeted landscape restoration focusing on high-value or high-yielding forage could ensure adequate floral resources are available to sustain the growing industry. Tools are currently needed to evaluate the likely productivity of potential sites for restoration and inform decisions about plant selections and arrangements and hive stocking rates, movements, and placements. We propose a new approach for designing sites for apiculture, centred on a model of honey production that predicts how changes to plant and hive decisions affect the resource supply, potential for bees to collect resources, consumption of resources by the colonies, and subsequently, amount of honey that may be produced. The proposed model is discussed with reference to existing models, and data input requirements are discussed with reference to an Australian case study area. We conclude that no existing model exactly meets the requirements of our proposed approach, but components of several existing models could be combined to achieve these needs.

Abstract:
Social responsibility is a natural obligation of cooperatives, and fulfilling social responsibility is of great meaning to the sustainable development of cooperatives and society. This article constructs a “life cycle-cooperative social responsibility framework (LC-CoopSRF)” and analyzes the framework with the case of Chongxin Apiculture Specialized Cooperative of Sichuan Province, China. The research results show that cooperatives should respect the law of life cycle, consider conditions such as operational capabilities and ethical expectations, and fulfill social responsibility in a reasonable manner. The successful cooperative highlights the bottom-line responsibility in the establishment phase, internal responsibility in the growth phase, system responsibility in the maturity phase, and the differentiation phase is the phase of system responsibility.
