Full textConsidering that we are building in city centres, the construction site layout plan (CSLP) becomes a tool that construction projects cannot do without. It can either be created in 2D or 3D. Now that the construction industry is slowly beginning to realize the advantages of having a site layout plan in 3D, one is able to create well-devised plans that include needed information, which is also beneficial from a production engineering approach.The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the construction design and the construction site layout plan and how the dialogue between the actors involved in the design and site layout planning can be improved. These questions have been answered by analysis of interviews with some persons who have been a part of the construction design and planning of the site in a project called STUDIO Malmö.The retrieval of information has been through interviews, review of Skanska's internal documents for Project STUDIO Malmö and by collecting useful information from literature.The study shows that a link between the construction design and the construction site layout plan exists, but that it is not clear in the current situation. The study also shows that there are suggestions on how to improve the communication that actually could work in the current situation.

Full textA peritoneal dialysis cycler model was developed to be used by biomedical device manufacturers in order to aid them in the system development, system level requirement writing, and FDA device certification process. This generic model can be used as a plug and play model for companies to incorporate a specific dialysis pump that is commercially available and quickly integrate it into their system. The Simulink model was used to simulate the system behavior and analyze multi domain dynamic systems data. A mathematical representation of the physical system was derived using fluid dynamic equations. The mathematical equations were then translated into Simulink blocks for the computer environment to understand. A proportional integral derivative controller was designed and integrated into the system in order to compensate the flow rate for any difference between the flow set point and the actual flow. System monitors were developed to protect patients from hazardous conditions.

Full textDespite the benefits that BIM has on a project, there are still companies that choose to create their APD plans in the traditional way. The reason why there are still companies that draw up APD plans on the traditional working method is that they do not have sufficient will or knowledge to change working method despite the method being considered uncertain and time consuming. Instead, there has been a new working method for producing plans and drawings that will replace the traditional working method. This working method creates models in 3D where the constituent building components also contain information. This working method is known as BIM as a wound for building information modeling. The model that is established with BIM and which contains information about the available building components is called the BIM model. BIM as a working method can in turn be used to create APD plans with the help of supporting tools such as SketchUp and Revit, which brings many benefits. This study therefore aims to investigate how APD plans are visualized in the current situation and to inform which factors all construction companies must take into account when choosing tools for visualization of the construction site. Advantages, disadvantages and obstacles will be highlighted in this study with regard to 3D and BIM in order to investigate which dimension is best suited for visualization of the APD plan and which dimension the APD plan is visualized with at present. Another purpose is to investigate where in the construction process the APD Plan should be integrated. The focus will be on demonstrating the benefits of expanding the use of 3D and BIM-related APD visualization tools, respectively. What is addressed in the issues is what are the different advantages and disadvantages as well as obstacles that exist with applying 3D and BIM when visualizing APD plans. In addition, two different visualizations are made with 3D and BIM tools to show how the APD plan is visualized. The most useful dimension in visualizing the APD plan is 2D where the APD plan is created with Bluebeam. There are some companies that have switched to 3D in visualization but which are combined with 2D drawings or sketches. Visualization with BIM has not been relevant for all the companies interviewed. On the other hand, the pre-designed BIM models are used as part of the 3D visualization in order to create as realistic a visualization as possible. The advantages of visualizing an APD plan with 3D and BIM tools are that it provides a realistic picture of what the construction site will look like and that risks, opportunities and problems that could not be detected with the 2D model become detectable. The disadvantage, however, of visualizing an APD plan with 3D or BIM tools is that the files can become too heavy, which in turn leads to the tool becoming difficult to handle and perceived as choppy. However, what prevents many from implementing 3D and BIM-related tools is the human factor that puts a stop to development, where human conveniences and work routines are crucial for the implementation of the tools. The most important factors that a company should consider when choosing tools when visualizing APD plans are Profitability, user experience, compatibility and support.

Full textOs fluxos de Ajuda Pública ao Desenvolvimento entre Portugal e os PALOP têm sido objecto de análise que, as mais das vezes, se fica pela leitura da evolução quantitativa dos seus valores. Partindo de uma observação da dinâmica da cooperação internacional e portuguesa e com apoio de dados estatísticos e modelos econométricos, a presente dissertação procura desvendar a estratégia, as motivações, os interesses e os determinantes que estão na origem de tais fluxos. Com base nos resultados atingidos, concluir-se-á acerca da importância de motivações humanitárias, económicas, comerciais, políticas, geoestratégicas e relacionadas com o passado colonial, bem como de questões transversais, na dinâmica dos fluxos de APD.
The ODA flows between Portugal and the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries have been thoroughly studied, but most of the times in a perspective that doesn´t go beyond the analysis of the quantitative evolution of the data. This paper aims to observe the strategy, the motivations, the interests and the determinants of this type of flows, starting from the observation of the international and Portuguese cooperation dynamics and with the support of statistical and econometric models. Based on the final results of the model, the importance of humanitarian, economical, commercial, political, geostrategic and past colonial experience motivations will be discussed, as well as other transversal aspects of the ODA flows.

Full textAvsikten med projektet har varit att hitta skillnader i APD- och logistikplaner i samband med väderskyddat byggande gentemot traditionellt byggande där väderskydd inte används. Spelar APD-planen en viktig roll när det gäller väderskydd? Kan man effektivisera byggandet med en smart APD- och logistikplan? Med hjälp av litteratur och fallstudier är detta frågor som vi ska försöka besvara. Använd litteratur består av forskarrapporter och tidigare examensarbeten. Projektet består av fallstudier där tre platschefer intervjuats. Efter intervjuerna sammanställdes platschefernas svar där likheter och skillnader tas upp.
Resultatet från undersökta projekt visar att det är beroende på väderskyddets utseende om det är någon skillnad på utformning av logistikplaner. APD-planerna på de tre fallstudierna skiljer sig inte mot traditionellt byggande, det är samma tankegång.
Samtliga platschefer säger att det ofta är problem med logistiken till byggarbetsplatsen. Vi tror inte enbart det beror på de leverantörer som levererar material utan att det är hela kedjan från råmaterial till färdig produkt. Det blir en dominoeffekt där den sista aktören i kedjan är den som blir mest drabbad. Om logistikkedjan från råmaterial till färdig produkt kan optimeras borde förseningar av leveranser till byggarbetsplasten kunna minskas. Vilket leder fram till att det finns pengar att spara för byggföretagen.

In this thesis, I evaluated the theoretical and practical performance of a Geiger mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD, or Geiger mode APD) array for use in optical communications systems. I designed and implemented a test pattern generator, capable of producing waveforms with OOK and PPM modulations at a variety of symbol rates and duty cycles. Using this pattern generator, I tested the receiver properties over a wide range of data rates and illumination levels, and was able to demonstrate the capability for error-free communications in both modulation formats, up to 78.8 Mbps at a sensitivity of 1.8 photons per bit for OOK, and 34.9 Mbps at 2 photons per bit for PPM.

Full textThis thesis realized at the IES, with the collaboration of SOFRADIR and the CEA-LETI, had for objective the potential evaluation of the InSb material for the realization of midwave infrared (MWIR) avalanche photodiodes (APD). Studying the design (TCAD modeling), the MESA technological fabrication (wet etching, dry etching, passivation) and analyzing the electrical characterizations of devices fabricated, this work has investigated all the scientific elements necessary for the development of this photodetector technology. The MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) grow InSb photodiodes have shown monopixel dark current density from 10 to 30nA/cm² at -50mV and 77K. These performances are at the state of the art for InSb epi-diodes and highlight the excellent crystal quality of the epitaxial layers. The first InSb APDs were grown and characterized. With a pure electron injection, we have observed an exponential increase of the gain, signature of a single carrier multiplication exclusively initiated by the electrons. A gain value of 3 was measured at -4V. This asymmetrical aspect of the impact ionization process would indicate the possibility to obtain a gain without excess noise. This is fundamental for the intended imaging applications. At this stage, InSb APD performances are limited by a too high residual doping level, resulting in a strong band to band tunneling current. Nevertheless, this work provides all the milestones needed for the InSb APD development where the key point is undoubtedly the getting of low residual doping level in the multiplication layer

Full textPurpose: On-site construction is a complicated process. A temporary factory, with new zones for materials and workplace area must be established for each new project, which complicates the process further. Material management stands for a big saving opportunity in building projects and 40 % of the time lost on a construction site can be attributed to material management. To overcome this waste connected to material management a well-processed logistics planning, god communication as well as experience feedback from previous projects is required. The aim for this thesis is therefore to identify improvement measure regarding the use of material-dedicated buffer zones and walking paths, and as well as create a model of communication that supports experience feedback. Method The thesis is a case study on two projects within the organization of NCC. A qualitative data collection with literature review, interviews, document analysis and observation has been conducted. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted and includes seven respondents with different position within the construction industry. Findings: The thesis has produced factors that should be taken into consideration when material zones and walking paths are planned. The result shows that resources and structured processes are required if experience feedback should work during the construction project. To succeed with the use of material-dedicated buffer zones and walking paths, good communication of the construction site plan is needed. Furthermore, the thesis has resulted in a model of communication that supports experience feedback. Implications: It’s during the purchase and delivery planning that the conditions for the material-dedicated buffer zones and walking paths are set, therefore the construction site planning should be involved more in this phase. A prerequisite for using dedicated material zones and walking paths are resources which supports the construction management with planning and performance. By using logistic resources within the organization facilitates planning and management of material at the construction site, enables that collected experience can be conveyed between projects. In the production there should be a responsible receiver of material deliveries, who is extra briefed in the constructions site plan and the material-dedicated buffer zones through continuous communication with the construction management and logistic resource. Limitations: Since the thesis only includes two building projects, there is a limitation of the factors and arguments that are treated. Although the result is based on two building projects the fundamental processes and course of events are similar and can therefore be applied on other building projects.

Full textToday, one of the more complicated construction projects in Sweden is in full swing, namely the rebuilding of Slussen in Stockholm. The reasons for this are, among other things, that the former Slussen is in such a bad condition, and that the Mälaren regulation needs to be changed to allow for increased drawing of water. Located in the middle of the city and with about 450,000 people passing this meeting place daily, the parties involved to the reconstruction have limited conditions.Skanska is one of the many companies involved in enabling the rebuilding of Nya Slussen and the purpose of this work is to investigate how to streamline the logistics flow on one of Skanska's construction projects, SN 81 Art Construction Land. The aim of the study has been to locate the different parameters that adversely affect the logistics flow. The primary objective has since been to present action proposals that will increase value creation at the workplace and reduce / eliminate the waste items associated with the building.The method chosen for this study has been a combination of literature studies, survey and interviews. The survey was only shared with the construction workers on the project and the interviews have only been carried out for officials on the project selected according to experience and position to get a nuanced image of the subject.After this study, the critical parameters that affect the logistics flow negatively have been located. Space, communication and structure. Recommendations have then been worked out to increase value creation time and eliminate / reduce wasting items. The action proposals that were developed became an updated APD plan with storage areas given, external storage space, improved communication, simplified protocol management and, finally a structured worksite.

Full textWorkplace logistics in the construction industry has been investigated for many years and there are great opportunities for improvement. It has been found that through improved logistics, profits can be increased. In recent years, a new branch of logistics has emerged, third-party logistics. The exam is investigating whether third party logistics with carrying support to the installation site is a profitable alternative for Hulta Torg, as well as establishing an internal workplace deployment plan and presenting a proposal that will benefit production. The essay has been conducted through literature studies and interviews. The literature study has focused on building logistics and third-party logistics and the interviews have been conducted with different occupational roles in the construction industry. The results show that there are shortcomings in communication generally in the construction industry and that there is room for improvement in the industry. It is primarily the dialogue between the main contractor and the subcontractor, as well as the notification between the supplier and the contractor, is lacking. The use of a third-party logistics to handle the delivery of materials benefits the industry and it has been found that it is most likely to increase in the future. The result presents an internal workplace deployment plan that describes where materials should be placed to get as efficient internal logistics as possible. In order to improve communication, it is proposed that each morning have a meeting between the main contractor and the subcontractor where the activities of the day are discussed. A schedule of delivery plans that anyone can access and update is also recommended. The contractor must make higher demands on the supplier and have it in the agreement. If not followed, this will not be accepted. The cost of a third-party logistics is more expensive than if the contractor did it himself but they gain production hours and that a critical part like the lift is used for a larger part of the day. On the inner workplace deployment plan, the material is placed near where it should be mounted and the gypsum is placed in the middle of the rooms where no inner wall will stand.

Full textIn case of a fire at a construction site there is a risk of personal injury, property damage and stop in the building production that may be costly. There are shortcomings in the planning of fire safety at the construction site and at different construction methods. The planning of fire safety at construction sites are also in need of improvements according to how a construction site, and thus risks of fire, change during construction production. This by planning the fire safety along with the production of the building and that the fire safety is presented on workplace disposition plans. Fire protection design is mostly not included in the digital work method that Building Information Modeling (BIM) implies. The fact that the fire consultant is not involved with and works in BIM means that the benefits of collaboration between different disciplines cannot be utilized. The research on fire protection in BIM today focuses on the design of the completed building and how fire protection can be included in BIM. There is currently no research regarding both fire safety at the construction site and BIM modelling of the construction site. This leads to a gap between BIM as a working method at the construction site and the planning of fire safety. Because of mentioned problem areas, the study’s purpose was to investigate improvements for fire safety on construction sites. This by mapping out conditions and applicable areas where fire safety can be included in the planning of workplace disposition plans in time-dependent BIM models. The aim of the study was to provide a basis for future work methods in which fire safety, workplace disposition plans and BIM at construction sites are used together. To fulfill the purpose, a literature study and an interview study were conducted. The literature study was conducted to review published material regarding fire safety, construction site planning with workplace disposition plans, BIM at the construction site and BIM with fire safety design. Interviews were conducted to gain an insight into how people use fire safety documents, workplace disposition plans and BIM on construction sites (in practice). The information derived from theoretical knowledge and practical experience was analyzed to map the conditions and applicable areas where fire safety can be included in the planning of workplace disposition plans and time-dependent BIM models. This to bridge the gap between fire safety, workplace disposition plans and the use of BIM on construction sites. The identified areas that have been established are planning, communication and control and follow-up. To be able to work with fire safety and workplace disposition plans in time-dependent BIM model within the identified areas, there are some basic conditions that needs to be fulfilled. To be able to develop workplace disposition plans and make these time-dependent in the BIM model, education is needed to get the necessary knowledge and skills in both the design and production. There also needs to be an early collaboration between production and design to cover all areas of expertise needed in planning the production of a building with BIM. To be able to design workplace disposition plans in BIM, it is also a prerequisite that all disciplines work in the BIM model. If there is no information, such as information of the landscape, it is not possible to complete workplace disposition plans over the whole construction site in BIM. To develop time-dependent workplace disposition plans where fire safety are included in a BIM model, this study has proven to be beneficial in several areas. Planning the fire safety together with workplace disposition plans allows the fire protection at the construction site to be planned viregarding production and that the fire safety requirements can be implemented without the production being compromised. Time-dependent workplace disposition plans in a BIM model make it possible to visualize the changes at the construction site, thus predicting fire risks during different stages of the construction. Fire safety included in a BIM model can be a tool for improving communication at the construction site. This is because the information about the fire safety on construction sites inserted becomes more project-specific, which means that the information about the fire safety requirements can be easier to convey, clearer to follow and more understandable. With better information and increased knowledge about fire safety on construction sites, control and follow-up can be performed more effectively and therefore improving the fire safety by performing the controls with a higher quality. This gives the hope that fire protection during construction will be a major part of planning and designing the construction site and that this will lead to a safer construction site.

Para tal, a dissertação investiga as origens da meta e as principais teorias econômicas e o contexto político que a fundamentaram. A revisão teórica mostrou que as teorias e modelos econômicos que embasaram a meta e sua lógica de assistência internacional são, em geral, considerados desatualizados no meio acadêmico. A análise empírica utilizou como metodologia o Two-Gap Model - com as mesmas premissas feitas para criar a meta na década de 1960, mas utilizando dados atuais - para estimar os valores da meta para os anos 2014-2019. Os resultados mostraram que, para quase todas as hipóteses, o montante da ajuda necessária para o desenvolvimento dos países pobres seria menor do que a meta sugere. Além disso, ao analisar diferentes regiões, foram encontrados números distintos para a meta, o que revela que a meta de 0,7% generalizou erroneamente as necessidades dos países em desenvolvimento.
This dissertation aims to verify whether the international aid target of 0.7% of the rich countries' national income to be destined to development aid is still adequate to the world current conditions. In order to do so, it investigates the origins of the target and the main economic theories and political context that underpinned it. The theoretical review showed that the economic theories and models that supported the target and its aid rationale are in general considered outdated in the academic field. The empirical analysis used the Two-Gap Model methodology - with the same assumptions made to create the target in the 1960s but using current data - to estimate the target's values for the years 2014-2019. The results showed that, for almost all assumptions, the amount of aid needed for the development of poor countries would be less than the target suggests. Furthermore, when analyzing different regions, distinct figures were found for the target, which reveals that the 0.7% target has wrongly generalized the developing countries' needs.

Full textThis thesis presents my research work on the conception of a readout chain dedicated to the APD (Avalanche Photo Diodes)-based PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging for small animal. The PET imaging allows the conjunction of its modality with the micro CT (X-ray Computerized Tomography) and micro SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) imaging which have been developed at IPHC (Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien, UMR 7178). These three imaging compose a multi-modality imaging system for small animal (AMISSA). Two prototypes have been designed in order to finally realize the complete readout chain. The first one (called APD Chip) is a ten-channel low noise front-end circuit. Every channel consists of a Charge Sensible Amplifier (CSA), a CR-(RC)2 shaper, and an analogue buffer. The Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC) in input from test is equal to 275 ± 2 e- + 10 e- /pF for a shaping time of 136 ns. The second prototype PETROC is a mixed circuit. It comprises an eight-channel Peak Detect and Hold (PDH) circuit and a five-channel Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC). The simulation shows that the error is less than 0. 7% over the whole dynamic range. A multi-level interpolation was implemented in the TDC design to obtain a measurement range up to 10 µs and a bin size of 20 ps. In this thesis, the prototypes are presented for both their theoretical analyses and their circuit designs. The test results of the first prototype are also presented

Full textThis research aims to improve our understanding of the entry strategies of Chinese enterprises in Africa from the perspective of Chinese enterprises. Literature in international strategy emphasizes the need for choosing a specific context of the study thereof. However, the perception of Chinese entrepreneurs in terms of when investing in Africa is virtually nonexistent in the literature. This thesis attempts to illuminate the different implementation strategies of Chinese enterprises in the African context. The implementation of these companies on the continent is she smart for their growth? How do they adapt to expanding their geographic scope and manage the physical distance, cultural, institutional and psychological that separates them from their potential partners? To do this, we conducted a research approach in three steps : The first phase devoted to information retrieval and exploration of Chinese enterprises in Mali. This to be the literature of our research. A second empirical phase was conducted on the basis of a questionnaire with 18 Chinese companies alike. A phase descriptive / prescriptive has extended the response to our research problem by proposing a cross-sectional analysis of the different cases studied. Full textVery High Energy gamma ray astronomy uses till now exclusively as detector the Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) to collect weak light flux of atmospheric showers. But an alternative is now emerging: Avalanche Photodiodes polarized in Geiger mode called "Geiger-APD". The PMT is a detector designed in the 70's which presents many advantages but also suffers from several drawbacks: size, weight, cost, sensitivity to magnetic field but especially difficulty to realize its pixilation in matrix. Geiger-APDs are semi-conductor devices made of PN junction integrated in a special technology to detect very low light flux, thanks to the polarization beyond the avalanche voltage. Geiger-APD presents very high photoelectron gain (˜106) strongly dependant on the polarization voltage beyond avalanche. These photodiodes present many advantages with respect to PMT, mainly as concerns miniaturization for applications based on imaging, such as the detection of Cerenkov flashes in gamma ray astronomy. In this thesis, we present the study, the design and the realization of a technological structure, based on Silicon. This structure has shown reliability to detect weak luminous flux with breakdown voltage at 12V and dark current below 10pA at breakdown. We also developed several models, physical and electrical, necessary to the technological optimization, as well to the development of control and readout circuits, i. E. The basis of any imaging technology. The work presented here consists in the study, the design and the realization of a matrix of high sensitivity pixels. A project of a Cerenkov telescope based on this innovative technology is also presented

Full textDans l'état de l'art le meilleur détecteur de lumière est aujourd'hui le Photomultiplicateur (PMT), grâce à ses caractéristiques de sensibilité et de vitesse. Mais il présente quelques inconvénients : faible efficacité quantique, coût, poids etc. Nous présentons dans cette thèse une nouvelle technologie alternative : les compteurs de photons sur semi-conducteur, constitués de photodiodes polarisées en mode Geiger.
Ce mode de fonctionnement permet d'obtenir un effet de multiplication au moins identique à celui des PMT. Un modèle physique et électrique a été développé pour reproduire le comportement de ce détecteur.
Nous présentons ensuite dans ce travail de thèse un procédé technologique original permettant la réalisation de ces dispositifs dans la centrale de technologie du LAAS-CNRS, avec la simulation de chaque opération du processus.
Nous avons mis au point une fiche pour la caractérisation électrique des dispositifs, du mode statique au mode dynamique, et vérifié la conformité aux simulations SILVACO, et au modèle initial. Les résultats obtenus sont déjà excellents, compte tenu qu'il s'agit d'une première étape de prototypage, et comparables avec les résultats publiés dans la littérature.
Ces composants sur silicium peuvent intervenir dans toutes les applications où il y a un photomultiplicateur, et le remplacer. Les applications sont donc très vastes et la croissance du marché très rapide. Nous présentons une première expérience d'astrophysique installée au Pic du Midi qui a détecté des flashs Tcherenkov de rayons cosmiques avec cette nouvelle technologie à semi-conducteur.
