BERGAMO, SONIA.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: In most recent drug research, context is still treated as a product of broad structural processes, reducing the chances for a more finely-grained understanding of time and place of consumption. At the time of the field work, Milano Rogoredo was the biggest urban open drug scene in northern Italy. Starting form this case study, the goal of the present work is to document how the specific context is produced through the activity of drug use and how the so constructed context intervenes in the modulation of drug use itself. Methodology: In the research, the case study methodology is implied in order to collect and put into dialogue data of different nature. Analysis was conducted through an ethnographic approach which includes in-depth and semi-structured interviews (42), participant observation (70 days), news articles and use of maps and photos. Drawing on a post-structural theoretical framework, the methodology is based on the analytical elements proposed by Duff (2007): space, embodiment and practices. Findings: Drug use practices embedded in the Milano Rogoredo open drug scene impact on space representations creating a place of resistance in the narcotic city. The so-called drug related nuisance tends to result in a claim for social and spatial purification from citizens. The resistance zone that develops within the open drug scene allows the emergence of community bonds and fosters the spread of drug use practices that involve specific skills. The social object of the syringe reproduces social worlds, social divisions and generational differences. Violence permeates the every-day routines and practices which include drug related sex work and beggary. The lack of structured harm reduction interventions reduces the space to negotiate this violence. Research limitations/implications: The results are specific of the context in which the study was conducted. Contacts and data were mainly gained starting from harm reduction interventions, since these organisations provide the most accessible contact with drug users. Given the recruitment strategy adopted, individuals who are part of the study cannot be considered as representative of the drug using population as a whole. Value/practical implications: Despite a wide international literature, Italy shows a lack of sociological accounts of open drug scenes, particularly regarding the impact of context on local drug use practices. This research gives visibility to the effect of the local setting on drug use practices in a long-lasting ODS in Milan (Italy). In the effort to make interventions always more effective, results can orient harm reduction strategies and provide initial evidence on the impact of institutional measures to face ODS. Along with punctual aspects, outcomes can also orient future research on drug consumption practices and context relevance in drug use settings.

Abstract:
This report is a summary and a discussion of several studies, that havebeen carried out within the SYO-project (syo=educational and vocationalguidance). The SYO-project, financed by the National Board of Education, has two major sources of information concerning the description andanalyses of (1) the content of syo and (2) different persons' conceptionsand notions of education, work, and choice of education and profession. The aim of this work is to investigate pupils in grade 7-9 regardingtheir actual choices and the particular conditions, that could influencethose choices e.g. the importance of the family and the syo. In theframework for conducting this study, some assumptions are made aboutthe role of school and syo. The pupils' choices and the conditions underwhich they occur, are examined from a societal, educational andindividual perspective. Furthermore, a model is developed to illustratehow pupils' conceptions and notions are formed. Both extensive andintensive studies have been executed, using parents, pupils, teachers andcounsellors. The data have been collected primarily from individualinterviews and questionnaires. The results have been published in sevenreports, nos. 4-10 in Pedagogiska rapporter/Educational reports.Department of Education, University of Umeå (in Swedish). The resultsdemonstrate, that the pupils choices of education and profession arestrongly related to sex and social class. Only their choices of educationseem to be stable. However, when they change, the differences betweensex and social class tend to be even larger. The influences from parentsand school coincides so as to support the pupils* conceptions and notionsof education, work, and educational and vocational choices, which arebased on an individual perspective. In contrast, there can also be a breakin the ideological transmission, such that, for example, the pupils1conceptions of work may reflect more of the parents' influences thanthe schools1. Different conditions of importance for the work of syo, inaccordance with official goals, are not fulfilled. Thus, the integrationof syo does not exist. For example, the number of pupils seems too largeand the expectations of teachers and other persons in the school, concerning syo, are quite different from those of the counsellors. Finally,a few limitations and the principal results of the work are discussedalong with suggestions for further research. The results concern, interalia, the socially based differences in knowledge between parents andpupils. These differences mean, in essence, that a basic condition forrational choice is not fulfilled. Furthermore, the role of syo as a sortingmechanism in the process of social reproduction is deemphasized. Instead, its legitimizing function appears as more important.

Lidman, Julia, and Roma Goussakov.

Full text
Abstract:

Dharod, Meghna. "Diabetic foot : microbiology, pathogenesis and glycan studies." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2010. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/9057z/diabetic-foot-microbiology-pathogenesis-and-glycan-studies.

Full text
Abstract:
Complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. Diabetic foot infections remain one of the major complications leading to a leg loss every 3 seconds due to amputations causing mental trauma and distress. In diabetic foot ulcers aerobes, anaerobes and fungus often interact with each other and form biofilms which is difficult to treat, enhancing antimicrobial resistance and lead to a non-healing ulcer. Co-existing peripheral vascular disease and neuropathy exacerbate the problems. In T2DM patients’ minor cuts and wounds, often lead to hard to treat and chronic ulcers which can worsen to gangrene formation which may lead to osteomyelitis compromising the mechanics of the foot. It is necessary to identify the virulence factors of these clinically significant microbes and to identify the resistance patterns regularly to limit the antibiotic usage and target to the specific organisms. A Cohort studies were carried out in India and in the UK to identify the risk factors among the diabetic foot patients along with their microbial aetiology and antibiotic resistance patterns from the tissue and pus samples. This part of the research has shown the presence of mixed cultures mainly from the Indian diabetic foot ulcer specimens with higher percentages of anaerobes than aerobes. Multi-drug resistant organisms were one of the peculiar characteristics of the diabetic foot ulcer profiles of Indian patients. As compared to the Indian patients, UK patients had few resistant organisms and the patients admitted to hospitals in India were at the last stage of foot ulcers whereas in the UK, surveillance and preventative strategies allow early detection and intervention. Currently there is a lack of rapid, robust and an inexpensive diagnostic method for the rapid typing and identification of clinically significant anaerobes. Another part of the research focussed on utilising the glycan-lectin interactions by developing a simple enzyme linked lectin sorbent assay by employing biotinylated lectins to develop to an enzyme linked lectin sorbent assay (ELLA) on whole cells, Proteinase K treated cells and glycolipids of clinically significant aerobes and anaerobes. This study is concluded by utilising the glycan-lectin interactions and to develop a rapid typing method for clinically significant Methicillin resistant and sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis species. The rapid identification of anaerobes and typing of Peptostreptococcus species was also by facilitated by the developed ELLA method. Finegoldia magna is one of the most significant anaerobes from soft tissue infections and the Gas Chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of the glycolipids of Finegoldia magna on composition analysis using show the presence of sialic acid which could be involved in pathogenesis. This sugar may be one of virulence factor employed by this organism in either attachment to the host or to other organisms.

Pettersson, Andreas, and Lisa Bohman. Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Social and Welfare Studies, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-6182.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and explain how outdoor pedagogy as a way of education is used by teachers in the elementary school. We want to find out what educationalists’ opinions are about outdoor pedagogy and what purposes and goals they think are associated with outdoor education.

The results of the investigation are based on a qualitative study where we have used semi-structured interview forms on eight elementary teachers. The studies were conducted at three different schools in Sweden with varying socio-economical and physical conditions.

In the thesis we concluded that outdoor pedagogy is being put into practice by many educationalists, but very rarely. The purpose of outdoor education among the teachers has a theoretic ground, which means that they are indeed aware of how the specific method can stimulate children’s development. Additionally the study showed us that teachers associate outdoor pedagogy with many inconveniences and problems, thus there is a big discrepancy between theory and practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Motivations, Attitudes and Modern Languages. A study of students’ motivational processes and attitudes while learning foreign languages. This doctoral thesis investigates students’ motivational processes and attitudes while studying and learning foreign languages (FLs). Students were asked about their choice of FL, and what had motivated them during their many years of studies. The study analyzes open-ended questionnaires and interviews with 43 students enrolled in the last year of foreign language studies in two schools, limiting its focus to the three most commonly studied FLs – French, German and Spanish. The theoretical framework of the thesis draws on sociocognitive theory (Bandura 1997; Linnenbrink & Pintrich 2002). Several informants refer to motivation in terms that could be related to intrinsic motivation. They have chosen to continue studying their particular target language due to an emotional state which could be related to enjoyment, pleasure and curiosity (Deci & Ryan 1985). Another salient feature is the frequent reference to mastery goals. Many of the informants express a motivation directed towards mastery and growth, or a main goal to be fluent or communicatively competent in their target language. Several informants also underline the motivational importance of experiencing competence, success and development. They become motivated by experiencing self-efficacy (Bandura 1997). This self-efficacy is rooted in experience of success, but also in being encouraged by significant others or role models, i.e. family members and friends. Despite a frequent awareness of the weakening general interest for FL, most students have a supportive network. Likewise, family and friends play a crucial role for many informants while choosing their target language initially. This key factor interacts with other important factors, such as the experiences of visiting countries or settings where the target language is used. In this context, target language attitudes tend to be important when choosing language and pursuing studies.

Abstract:
Abstract HIC(d) (Head Injury Criterion, dummy) is defined as a kinematic relationship involving resultant translational deceleration at the CG (center of gravity) of a biofidelic headform and duration of contact. As deceleration response of a headform is in general a function of the energy-absorbing and geometrical properties of an obstructing structure (for a given impact speed), HIC(d) can be expressed, at least symbolically, as a function of those properties. The current paper uses a simplified mathematical model to capture the worst case of headform impact as considered in the FMVSS 201 regulation for upper interior head impact. The obstructing structural countermeasure in the path of a colliding headform is assumed to possess idealized elastoplastic although physically relevant behavior under loading. During the process of designing for headform impact safety compliance, which often turns out to be a trial-and-error process, it is sometimes difficult to see the correspondence between HIC(d) and the relative effectiveness of design iterations in terms of energy-absorption. Thus, relationship between HIC(d) and energy absorbed by such structural countermeasures is investigated. Based on results obtained from the current model and a new approach, an explicit relationship is derived between HIC(d) and the characteristic properties of an energy-absorbing countermeasure that can be used as a design aid.

Abstract:
Abstract Computational simulations are becoming more important in automotive safety engineering. To simulate the occupants during the crash environment, dummies are currently used to represent the occupants. However, current dummies and dummy models lack the detailed information to predict the occupant injuries during a crash. And for the human thorax models, simplified geometry and non strain-rate material properties were used for the rib cage with no ability to simulate the rib fractures often seen in an automotive crash. Therefore, a detailed finite element human thorax model with proper material properties and the capability to simulate the rib fractures is needed to better understand the thoracic injuries under frontal and side impacts. The current thorax model, based on a previous skeleton model with heart and lung by Deng et al. [1]. used digital surface images to construct the three-dimensional finite element representation of the spine, rib cage, arms, surface muscles, heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. Strain-rate-dependent properties were utilized for the rib cage. With the rib fracture prediction, the model showed good correlation with the test results.
