Abstract:
The Telaga Wama Natural Reserve (CATWA) at Bogor Regency, West Java Province is a biodiversity conservation area, however, the changed of some of the area's functions into a Nature Tourism Park can affect the quality of its ecosystem. One approach to evaluate ecosystem quality is through the analysis of Anura species diversity. The continuity of the Anuras eggs and larvae is influenced by the presence of pollutants in the waters. The availability of Anura species diversity database can be an indication of the aquatic ecosystem quality at CATWA. This research was conducted using the Visual Encounter Survey method at five sampling locations in CATWA, namely river, lake, swamp, forest pond, and waterfall. Observations of tadpoles were carried out twice a week, for four weeks, accompanied by physical-chemical measurements of the waters, namely DO, BOD, COD, temperature, pH, depth, and turbidity. The Anura diversity database is made up of a time series, combining of this study result, and previous reports. This study had identified 10 species of tadpoles from six Anura families, namely Dicroglossidae, Megophyridae, Ranidae, Bufonidae, Rhachoporidae and Microhylidae. The level of species diversity is moderate (H'=2.29). Turbidity and water temperature have the highest correlation with species diversity. The water quality in CATWA was relatively good, and able to support the life of Anura. This is also evidenced by the presence of species representatives from all Anura families in Java Island.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The eyes of frogs and toads (Anura) are among their most fascinating features. Although several pupil shapes have been described, the diversity, evolution, and functional role of the pupil in anurans have received little attention. Studying photographs of more than 3200 species, we surveyed pupil diversity, described their morphological variation, tested correlation with adult habits and diel activity, and discuss major evolutionary patterns considering iris anatomy and visual ecology. Our results indicate that the pupil in anurans is a highly plastic structure, with seven main pupil shapes that evolved at least 116 times during the history of the group. We found no significant correlation between pupil shape, adult habits, and diel activity, with the exception of the circular pupil and aquatic habits. The vertical pupil arose at least in the most-recent common ancestor of Anura + Caudata, and this morphology is present in most early-diverging anuran clades. Subsequently, a horizontal pupil, a very uncommon shape in vertebrates, evolved in most neobatrachian frogs. This shape evolved into most other known pupil shapes, but it persisted in a large number of species with diverse life histories, habits, and diel activity patterns, demonstrating a remarkable functional and ecological versatility.

Abstract:
Trophic niche of Dendropsophus minutus (Anura: Hylidae) in southern Brazil. The feeding biology of the Neotropical tree frog Dendropsophus minutus is described based on identifcation of the items consumed by the anuran. Samples were collected monthly samplings for one year in an Araucaria forest in the state of Paraná in southern Brazil. Of the total of 101 gastrointestines examined, 51 were empty or contained digested remains or plant items. The 50 samples of gastrointestinal contents contained three classes and 10 orders of arthropods. The results suggest that D. minutus is a generalist predator that feeds on arthropods, primarily those in the orders Araneae, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. The diet varies seasonally depending upon prey activity, which determines the breadth of the trophic niche of the frog.

A male specimen described and tentatively assigned to L. anura by Badonnel is herein described as Lachesilla guineensis Lienhard, n. sp. The female genitalia of L. anura are unique in the genus Lachesilla Westwood, especially due to the complete absence of gonapophyses and the presence of particularly complex sclerotizations surrounding the spermapore.

Abstract:
Various types of intra and interspecific vocalisation are a primary means of communication among anuran species. In intraspecific interactions, male anurans emit calls to attract females and repel rival males. This study describes new vocalisation types for reproductively active Boana raniceps (Anura: Hylidae) and provides a commentary on aggressive intraspecific behaviour that was recorded at ten sites. In addition to advertisement calls, our findings reveal that males emit two types of aggressive call, one territorial call and one encounter call. We identified a sequence of different aggressive behaviours displayed during physical combat between two males. Our findings show that B. raniceps exhibits complex intraspecific behaviours in a reproductive context.

Abstract:
Amphibians are part of biodiversity that spread in various places in the world. Amphibians have an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem as part of the food chain system. However, lack of public understanding caused the potential of Anura amphibians to have not been explored optimally hence research on Anura amphibians in the Wan Abdul Rachman Great Forest Park (Tahura WAR) is very important to support Anura's conservation efforts. This study aims to understand and identify the diversity of Anura order amphibians in the Protection and Utilization Blocks of the Tahura WAR on forest and river habitat types. Data was collected by using Line Transect and Visual Encounter Survey method. Data collection using Line Transect was conducted by making a narrow transverse path at the observation site, while the Visual Encounter Survey was conducted by making a wildlife observation path with 3 replications. Analysis of the data used included amphibian diversity, community similarity index, and species evenness. The results found 25 individuals of Anura amphibians in the Protection Block and 40 individuals in the Utilization Block of Tahura WAR. Overall, 65 individuals were found consisting of 3 species of amphibians from 2 families i. e., 2 species of the Ranidae family and 1 species of the Bufonidae family. The results showed that the species diversity index, species richness index, and community similarity index in the Protection and Utilization Blocks of Tahura WAR were categorized as low. Reforestation needs to be done so that the Anura habitat is maintained. Keywords: amphibian, biodiversity, order Anura, Tahura WAR

Abstract:
Changing the function of habitat into a tourism area will have an impact on the diversity of Anuran species. This condition is currently happening in the Talago Nagari Paninjauan Waterfall Area, Tanjung Raya District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. This study is therefore important for revealing the diversity of Anuran species before the impact to this habitat increase in the future. This study used the VES (Visual Encounter Survey) sampling technique, and information on various localities and the microhabitat of each species was recorded. A total 48 individuals, with 12 species belonging to six families of Anuran was collected. Species diversity in the Talago Waterfall area shows a medium level of diversity, with an index of 2.2653, a medium species richness index of 2.8414. In this area, no dominant species were found with a low dominance index (0.1207). If the level of tourism activity in the Talago Waterfall area increases, it will have an effect in the future by causing habitat disruption and the presence of Anura; thus, related parties must be able to take appropriate action on tourism activities in the area.

Abstract:
Zelleriella antilliensis (Metcalf, 1914) was found in Australia in the cloaca of the introduced American cane toad, Bufo marinus (Linnaeus, 1758). Drawings and measurements (length, width) were made with the help of a camera lucida. Other measurements were performed with the help of a digitiser. The presence of some native anuran Protoopalina spp. was noticed. 657 native Anura in 61 species and 4 families checked for Z. antilliensis were negative. Experimental infections of various anuran tadpoles of the genus Limnodynastes, Litoria and Xenopus, show that the opalinid can only survive for a limited time in these unnatural hosts. Cyst viability seems not to exceed three weeks in water. Gamonts and gametes were not observed during experimental infections. It is suggested that a protrophont (mononucleate) excysts and within 24 hours after infection of the host becomes a young trophont (binucleate). Mononucleate forms observed in the adults are recognised as Z. antilliensis and not as a species of Hegneriella.

Abstract:
Indonesia is a country with very high biodiversity and is known as Mega Biodiversity. In Indonesia found about 450 species of Anura representing about 11% of all species in the world, and 28 species ofwhich 28 live in West Java. Anura animals have a pattern of calling behavior that is essential for mating: males produce call-up behavior that attracts females and, in some species, represents the extent of their territory. Research on frogs and toads is considered necessary considering the absence of more detailed data on the bioacoustics of these frogs, especially in the West Java area, so that variations and patterns of anura sounds are known in the Telaga Warna Nature Reserve and Nature Park (CA-TWA) area and can make scientific contributions in information on variations and sound patterns owned by anura animals in terms of anura conservation in Indonesia. This research was conducted from month March-December 2018, located in Telaga Warna Nature Reserve and Nature Park, Bogor, West Java. Call the recording every 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. each night during the sampling period. The number of anura species in the villa and swamp areas is more abundant than the lake area, and the presence of Pearl maroon frogs (nyctixalus margaritifer) found in the villa and lake areas, while the Bufo melanotictus type that likes to live in the lake area. It can be seen that the villa and swamp areas are still maintained vegetation by looking at the medium density of the canopy. Steeper slope conditions help the flow of nutrients from the soil due to the erosion process and settle in flat to gentle areas. The density of the canopy in the area helps maintain the surface temperature of the land with a stable land surface temperature ranging from 15 – 21 0C.

Abstract Jering Menduyung Nature Tourism Park (NTP) is one of the conservation forest areas in the Bangka Belitung Islands. The purpose of this study was to record and compare the diversity of Amphibians (Anura) according to their habitat types in Jering Menduyung Nature Tourism Park, West Bangka Regency. The observations were taken in four different habitat types, which were lowland forests, swamps, mixplantations, and mangroves. The method used was Visual Encounter Survey combined with purposive sampling and line transect. The results showed that each habitat type has a different composition of Anura. The total number of Anura found was 11 species of 5 families, with a total of 169 individuals. Diversity index and evenness index (E) were highest in the swamp habitat with H'= 1.48 and E= 0.76. Species richness (DMg) was highest in the lowland forest habitat (DMg= 1.69). The highest community similarity was found in the swamps and plantations (IS= 71.47%). Abstract:
Multimodal signaling in Boana albopunctata (Anura: Hylidae): reading visual and acoustic cues. The acoustic mode of communication is important for anurans, but visual communication is beginning to be considered essential for some species, genera, and families. This study focuses on visual and acoustic signals in Boana albopunctata (Hylidae: Cophomantinae) in an attempt to increase our understanding of signaling in this nocturnal Neotropical treefrog. Visual signals were assessed to determine whether they are directed toward conspecific opponents, as has already been observed for some diurnal anurans, or associated with potential morphological asymmetries. Associations between visual and acoustic signals were explored. The results suggest that males may combine visual and acoustic signals (multimodal signaling) synergistically, thereby strengthening the efficiency of information transmission. Thus, in nocturnal anuran species, visual signals may function primarily as an alerting component and multimodal signaling may be a relevant way of communication.

Abstract:
Comparative and ecological aspects of the reorganizations of early development in the class Amphibia are analyzed. We used data on the developmental diversity in a number of families belonging to the orders Anura and Caudata, in which many species had lost their connection with the aquatic environment. Model representatives of the class Amphibia (Ambystoma mexicanum, Rana temporaria, and Xenopus laevis) have small eggs (no more than 2.5 mm in diameter). In these species, the slowdown in the rate of cell divisions and the loss of synchrony occur at the midblastula stage. However, phylogenetically basal amphibian species (Ascaphus truei, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) are characterized by the large (4–6 mm in diameter) yolky eggs and a short series of synchronous blastomere divisions (the synchrony is already lost at the 8-cell stage of cleavage). They do not have a “midblastula transition”, which is characteristic of the above model species. On the other hand, many evolutionarily advanced non-model species of caudate and anuran amphibians (for example, Desmognathus fuscus, Gastrotheca riobambae, Philoria sphagnicolus), as well as the basal species, are characterized by the large, yolk-rich eggs and the early loss of cell division synchrony. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the cleavage pattern of the most extensively studied amphibians, the Mexican axolotl (Caudata) and the African clawed frog (Anura), represents a homoplasy. The midblastula transition, which is characteristic of these two species, might have evolved convergently in these two orders of amphibians as an embryonic adaptation to development in lentic water.

Abstract:
The Atlantic Forest is the home to a diverse and threatened fauna of amphibians. However, knowledge on these species is still scarce to many of its ecosystems, such as the Seasonal Forest. This study was aimed at determining the diversity of anurans in Parque Estadual Fritz Plaumann (PEFP), located in the municipality of Concórdia, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The PEFP comprises 741 ha, and is the only Conservation Unit of Seasonal Forest in Santa Catarina state. From August 2010 to July 2011 we surveyed frogs fortnightly during four to ten days, from sunset until approximately midnight. Active, audio and visual searches were carried out at breeding sites and favorable areas to meet the species. The sampling effort of the survey was evaluated with species accumulation curve considering the field expeditions as sample units. The species composition of PEFP was compared with 16 other different vegetal formations of the Atlantic Forest biome through similarity analysis. Twenty-three species were recorded. The accumulation curve approached an asymptote, indicating that most species of the area were observed. Most species were observed in lentic habitats of open areas. The anuran species composition of PEFP was similar to other areas of Mixed Ombrophile Forest and Seasonal Forest in southern region. Although PEFP comprised a relatively small area, the occurrence of habitat specialists, endangered amphibians that dependent on the forest, indicates the importance of this area for the conservation of the regional fauna. The continuation of long-term standardized studies is needed to monitor the population dynamics of recorded species and support alternative management practices, aiming at the conservation of anurans at the Seasonal Forest.

Abstract:
Observations on metamorphosing tadpoles of Hyalinobatrachium orientale (Anura: Centrolenidae). Metamorphosis, when anuran amphibians resorb their tails and remodel their mouthparts and internal organs, is a vulnerable stage in the frog’s life history. As larvae metamorphose from tadpoles to adult frogs, they are neither suited to aquatic life nor ready for active terrestrial life. Previous studies have examined the duration of metamorphosis in a range of species, with respect to tadpole size, habitat, and other factors; however, the duration of metamorphosis relative to where it takes place has not been reported in centrolenids. In Hyalinobatrachium orientale, metamorphosis takes place on the upper surfaces of the leaves of low understory plants and lasts 3.5–4.0 days, a little longer than expected for the tadpole of this body size. Metamorphs seem to shift their perches from leaf to leaf randomly. There are no significant differences in the temperature or relative humidity of the upper and lower surfaces of leaves in the forest understory; thus, the presence of the metamorphs on the upper surfaces of leaves may provide moisture from the upper story vegetation after rain and protect them from terrestrial predators.

Abstract:
Monospecific and bispecific genera are of particular interest in studies of taxonomic diversity and speciation evolution. Here, the distribution patterns of mono- and bispecific amphibians worldwide are investigated, with some discussion of on the conservation implications also presented. Based on an online database search (available from the American Museum of Natural History, New York), we found that the mean number of mono- and bispecific genera was similar among zoogeographic regions, with a total of 120 mono- (95 Anura, 17 Caudata, 8 Gymnophiona) and 65 bispecific (48 Anura, 10 Caudata, 7 Gymnophiona) genera. Out of 73 known amphibian families worldwide, only 35.6 % of them do not contain any mono- or bispecific genera. The frequency of mono- or bispecific genera by family was not significantly different among Anura, Caudata and Gymnophiona. There was a general tendency for the number of mono- and bispecific genera of amphibians to be positively correlated with the total number of genera in that family. In Anura, there was a preponderance of mono-specific genera in Afrotropical and Neotropical regions. Concerning bispecific genera, there was a clear preponderance in the Neotropical region for anurans. There was a positive correlation between the number of threatened genera (according to the IUCN Red List) in both the mono- and bispecific groups and the relative number of species in each taxon, thus showing that taxonomical speciosity clearly influences the frequency of occurrence of mono- and bispecific taxa in each family and order. In this regard, Anura dominated in both the number of worldwide described mono- and bispecific taxa as well as in that of the threatened ones according to IUCN Red List .

Abstract:
Frogs and toads (Amphibia: Anura) display diverse ecologies and behaviours, which are often correlated with visual capacity in other vertebrates. Additionally, anurans exhibit a broad range of relative eye sizes, which have not previously been linked to ecological factors in this group. We measured relative investment in eye size and corneal size for 220 species of anurans representing all 55 currently recognized families and tested whether they were correlated with six natural history traits hypothesized to be associated with the evolution of eye size. Anuran eye size was significantly correlated with habitat, with notable decreases in eye investment among fossorial, subfossorial and aquatic species. Relative eye size was also associated with mating habitat and activity pattern. Compared to other vertebrates, anurans have relatively large eyes for their body size, indicating that vision is probably of high importance. Our study reveals the role that ecology and behaviour may have played in the evolution of anuran visual systems and highlights the usefulness of museum specimens, and importance of broad taxonomic sampling, for interpreting macroecological patterns.

Abstract:
Here we describe the first findings of frogs (Anura) from the Upper Cretaceous of Russia – the distal part of the humerus and the tibiofibula fragment. They come from the Maastrichtian dinosaur locality in the city of Blagoveshchensk in the Amur region. The described remains possess an outer and inner structure typical for Anura. These are the easternmost and the youngest frog remains from the Upper Cretaceous of Asia.

Abstract:
Frogs and toads (Anura) exhibit some of the most diverse parental strategies in vertebrates. Identifying the evolutionary origins of parenting is fundamental to understanding the relationships between sexual selection, social evolution and parental care systems of contemporary Anura. Moreover, parenting has been hypothesized to allow the invasion of terrestrial habitats by the ancestors of terrestrial vertebrates. Using comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of frogs and toads based on data from over 1000 species that represent 46 out of 55 Anura families, we test whether parental care is associated with terrestrial reproduction and several life-history traits. Here, we show that both the duration of care and offspring protection by males and females have coevolved with terrestrial reproduction. Sexual size dimorphism is also related to care, because the large male size relative to female size is associated with increased paternal care. Furthermore, increased egg size and reduced clutch volume are associated with increased care in bivariate but not in multivariate analyses, suggesting that the relationships between care, egg size and clutch volume are mediated by terrestrial reproduction. Taken together, our results suggest that parenting by males and females has coevolved, and complex parenting traits have evolved several times independently in Anura in response to breeding in terrestrial environments.

Abstract:
A rapid RNA-sequencing technique was used to partially sequence the 18S ribosomal RNA of species representing seven taxa: Holocephali, Cladistia, Chondrostei, Holostei, Dipnoi, Anura and Caudata. Phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide sequences strongly suggests that both the Holocephali and Cladistia, and the Anura and Caudata, are each monophyletic groups. There is a weaker suggestion that the Chondrostei and Holostei are monophyletic. The Dipnoi did not group with any one of these more than with any other.
