Abstract:
AbstractThis article alleges that two letters attributed to the philosopher David Hume (1711–1776) were forged in the twentieth century. The letters were first published in 1972 and 1973 by Michael Morrisroe, an assistant professor of English in the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, after which they became monuments of conventional scholarship on Hume's life and writings. Both letters are cited without qualification by scholars of Hume's thought in dozens of publications, including Ernest Campbell Mossner's celebrated Life of David Hume (1980), and John Robertson's entry for Hume in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004). This article reconstructs the history and transmission of Hume's extant letters and attempts to account for why the forgeries published by Morrisroe were accepted as genuine. It makes a systematic case against the authenticity of the letters, and focuses in particular on the question of whether Hume met the Jansenist homme de lettres Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688–1761) and had access to his library, in Reims, in 1734. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the exposé for modern editorial scholarship and intellectual history.

Abstract:
SUMMARY Although the term 'sociolinguistics' was not introduced into linguistic nomenclature before 1952 (see Currie 1952) and the field became a recognized field of research in the late 1960s only (e.g., Bright 1966), it is clear that the subject did not begin two decades ago. Indeed, an investigation into the sources of 'sociolinguistics' reveals that its beginnings go back at least 100 years, to the work of William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894), Heymann Steinthal (1823-1899), Michel Breal (1832-1915), and others. However, these were the first programmatic statements and a number of developments in the study of language were necessary to converge upon the kind of sociolinguistics which most students of language associate with the name of William Labov (e.g., Labov 1966), at least in North America. Interestingly enough, it is also in the work of Labov (e.g., 1972) that the origins of 'sociolinguistics' (to some extent in contradistinction to the 'sociology of language' approach associated with Basil Bernstein, Joshua A. Fishman, and others) could be traced, although neither Labov nor the prolific Dell Hymes has written anything on the history of sociolinguistics. (Indeed, the only paper that comes close to it was written by an outsider to the field, the great Romance scholar Yakov Malkiel, in 1976.) In my paper, I shall demonstrate that there are essentially three major traditions of investigation that led to 'sociolinguistics', namely, (1) Dialectology, especially the work done in German-speaking lands and in France from the 1870s onwards (e.g., Georg Wenker [1852-1911], Jules Gillieron [1854-1926], and others) — part of which had been undertaken in an effort to verify and possibility to support the neogrammarian 'regularity hypothesis' of sound changes; (2) Historical Linguistics, in particular the kind advocated by Antoine Meillet (1866-1936) and his school (e.g., Meillet 1905; Vendryes 1921), which developed into a 'science sociologique' of linguistics in general (Sommerfelt 1932) and a 'sociologie du langage' (e.g., Cohen 1956) among the younger Meillet disciples, and (3) Bilingualism Studies (e.g., Max Weinreich 1931; Haugen 1953), traditions all of which can be found united in the 1953 study of Uriel Weinreich (1926-1967), who happens to have been Labov's teacher and mentor.

Abstract:
According to historian Antoine Prost, education in France is marked by two periods of profound reform. The first (1880-1902) occurred during the Third Republic and the second (1960-1985) was set in motion under de Gaulle. From an architectural point of view, the former gave rise to the Jules Ferry school, while the latter sought to introduce the English open-space school model into France. Taking the example of the École Saint-Merri, built in Paris between 1971 and 1973, this article examines the impact of this second reform from an architectural point of view.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We have characterized an early series of 5,6-bridged dioxinoquinolones which behaved strikingly different from typical quinolones. The 5,6-bridged dioxinoquinolones inhibited Escherichia coli DNA gyrase supercoiling activity but, unlike typical quinolones, failed to stimulate gyrase-dependent cleavable complex formation. Analogous unsubstituted compounds stimulated cleavable complex formation but were considerably less potent than the corresponding 5,6-bridged compounds. Consistent with a previous report (M. Antoine et al., Chim. Ther. 7:434-443, 1972) and contrary to established quinolone SAR trends, a compound with an N-1 methyl substitution (PGE-8367769) was more potent than its analog with an N-1 ethyl substitution (PGE-6596491). PGE-8367769 was shown to antagonize ciprofloxacin-mediated cleavable complex formation in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting an interaction with the gyrase-DNA complex that overlaps that of ciprofloxacin. Resistance to PGE-8367769 in E. coli was found to arise through missense mutations in gyrA, implicating DNA gyrase as the primary antibacterial target. Notably, only 1 of 15 distinct mutations selected on PGE-8367769 (D87G) has previously been implicated in quinolone resistance in E. coli. The remaining 14 mutations (E16V, G31V, R38L, G40A, Y50D, V70A, A84V, I89L, M135T, G173S, T180I, F217C, P218T, and F513C) have not been previously reported, and most were located outside of the traditional quinolone resistance-determining region. These novel GyrA mutations decreased sensitivity to 5,6-bridged dioxinoquinolones by four- to eightfold, whereas they did not confer resistance to other quinolones such as ciprofloxacin, clinafloxacin, or nalidixic acid. These results demonstrate that the 5,6-bridged quinolones act via a mechanism that is related to but qualitatively different from that of typical quinolones.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Species of the genus Helopelius Reitter, 1922 (type species: Stenomax aeneipennis Allard, 1876) were known from Rhodes and North Africa. We found that two species described from Rhodes belong to the genus Stenohelops Reitter, 1922, and Helopelius can be interpreted as a subgenus within latter, guided by the article 23.2 of ICZN. The following synonyms are proposed: Helopelius, stat. n. (from genus to subgenus) = Stenomaleis Español, 1957, syn. n.; Stenohelops Reitter, 1922 = Gunarellus Reitter, 1922, syn. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) aeneipennis (Allard, 1876) = Helopelius disgregus Reitter, 1922, syn. n., = Gunarus gayirbegi Nabozhenko & Keskin, 2009, syn. n. As a result, the following species are transferred from the former genus Helopelius to the genus Stenohelops: Stenohelops (Helopelius) nodifer (Kraatz, 1880), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) otini (Antoine, 1949), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) subsinuatus (Antoine, 1951), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) verrucosus (Vauloger de Beaupré, 1900), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) zaianus (Antoine, 1949), comb. n. Thus, the subgenus Helopelius contains 11 species from three isolated geographical exclaves: Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean and China. Lectotypes of Stenomax aeneipennis Allard, 1876, Helops gratus J. Frivaldszky, 1894 and Cylindrinotus (Helopelius) disgregus Reitter, 1922 are designated. Data on fossil species of the genus and the allied extinct taxa, as well as on bionomics of extant species of the subgenus Helopelius are presented. The check-list for extant and extinct species of Stenohelops is given.

Abstract:
In the film Vous n’avez encore rien vu (2012), Alain Resnais turns to the dramatic literature, transposing Jean Anouilh’s plays Cher Antoine ou l’Amour raté (1969) and Eurydice (1942) to the cinematographic universe. Abstract:
This work is to show the quintessence of the literality incarnated in the modern French literalism by analysing Meschonic's and Berman's theories. First of all, the modern literality is characterized by the recognition of the cultural dimension of the translating act, which is well expressed by literalists' review on the ethnocentric tendancy. Our work on Berman's "translation of the letter" and Meschonic's "poetic translation" has presented the reconciliation between the literality and the poeticity as one of the characteristics of the modern literality. Finally the confrontation of the literality theory with the interpretative theory of translation has revealed the conflict between linguistic and literary orders on their theoretical reflection

Abstract:
The HIFRENSA settlement is a residential complex built to accommodate workers of Vandellòs-I nuclear power plant. It also has a number of facilities at neighbourhood scale. The set is connected by pedestrian crossings with public squares and road scheme in cul-de-sac. In 1967 Antonio Bonet was commissioned to build the settlement, the administrative offices and other technical buildings on nuclear power plant site . The thesis exposes Bonet as architect researcher. At HIFRENSA settlement, a clear line between architecture and urbanism cannot be drawn. Bonet searches an universal solution. with a type or pattern definition as an element liable to be improved, refined, systematized and prefabricated. The pattern can mutate either to accommodate a construction system or for another needs, topographic, climatic or programmatic. Particularly in Bonet’s work, also to meet a higher requirement: its urban planning support. The greatest difficulty lies on the definition of an order judgment that can give a higher shape to the units, dwellings or facilities , with the intention of avoiding a monotonous urban complex and lack of identity.

Abstract:
In the referendum of June 2nd, 1946, the Italian voted for a Republic, which appeared as an abstraction for the majority of them. Moreover, the Constituent Assembly did not define precisely the field of action of the Head of State. After twenty years of fascism, the debates were dominated by the fear of a ‘strong man’ and the refusal of a presidential model. The Republic was therefore born as a institution under constraint: according to the main interpretation of the time, it was a 'super partes' institution that was to interfere as little as possible in the public scene. However, this interpretation changed deeply during the four mandates of Enrico De Nicola (1946-1948), Luigi Einaudi (1948-1955), Giovanni Gronchi (1955-1962) and Antonio Segni (1962-1964). The analysis of these four presidencies reveals the growing politicization of the presidential function. Far from being a passive actor, the Head of State intervened in both domestic and international affairs. His influence depended on the government’s weakness and on his relations with the Prime Minister. In some situations, he managed to impose his candidates and programme when the Parliament was unable to come to an agreement. Lastly, the Head of State became both the author and actor of the ceremonies that structure the civil calendar. By ‘self-staging’ his function and thanks to his numerous trips to the Italian provinces (313 trips between 1946 and 1964), he certainly laid the basis for the spreading of the republican ideal in Italy

Abstract:

Abstract:
Being one of the most important Romanian composers, thinkers and teachers of the second half of the 20th century, illustrious representative of modern European and Romanian thought with spiritual amplitude, Aurel Stroe has reached — although passed to the eternal ones in 2008 — the anniversary moment when he would have completed 90 years since his birth (May 5, 2022). Member of the academic staff at the Bucharest National University of Music until he left for Germany, Aurel Stroe taught orchestration and composition, but also he held courses in the USA (1985–1986), France (1972), Germany (1986–1994) and in Romania (the famous training courses from Bușteni, from 1992). Awarded the Prize of the Romanian Academy (1974) and the Herder Prize (Vienna, 2002), Aurel Stroe is distinguished by an impressive creation, in all the fields and genres: from opera (The Closed Citadel Trilogy, 1973–1988) to a libretto after Aeschylus: Agamemnon/Orestia I — 1973, Choephorele/Orestia II — 1983, Eumenides/Orestia III — 1988), to symphonic dance and vocal music (the poem for choir and orchestra Monumentum I (1961) — to the lyrics of Nichita Stănescu), from symphonic music (Arcade, Laude I and II, Canto I and II, Ciaccona con alcune licenze, Lyrical Preludes, Mandala with a polyphony by Antonio Lotti) to concert music (Concerto for clarinet and orchestra, Concerto for violin and ensemble of soloists "Capriccios and Ragas", Concerto for saxophone and orchestra "Prairie, Priere", Concerto for accordion and orchestra), from chamber music (piano sonatas) to choral music.

Abstract:
In the work of Antonio Bonet highlights his euphoric attitude about the utopia of the new architecture. Stripped of prejudice is facing one of the specific events of his time, will be the boom of mass tourism. Throughout his work, Bonet will face virgin territories. Since colonization of Punta Ballena in Uruguay in 1945, through the project spa town of Necochea-Quequén in 1952 in Argentina, the development project of the Manga del Mar Menor in 1961 in Murcia, Andalucía New in 1962 in Marbella and Aiguagelida in 1965 in Girona. Leisure became a problem to which modern urban planning should provide an answer. The return to nature and the outdoors, the sun, sea and sand, became the new habits of leisure.

Abstract:
Cookbooks are an essential type of publication in the field of food heritage preservation. Antonina Masilune (1921–2019) is a cook, popularizer of Latvian cuisine and author of several books, whose cookbooks are known both in Latvia and beyond its borders. The first book by Masilune “Everyday and festive table” was published in 1982, while until now the only cookbook in the world in the Latgalian language (one of the languages that is used in Latvia) “Povōru grōmota” (The Cookbook) was published in 1992. This determined the need, when developing the research, to get to know the food recipe books published by Masilune, with the aim of popularizing the culinary heritage by developing a new graphic design of the first and only book published in Latgalian. The redesigned cookbook will popularize the knowledge and skills of Latgale’s traditional crafts in Latvia and the world today, will introduce readers to the contribution of Masilune, an outstanding cook born in Rezekne (Latvia) and internationally known lecturer, fourth class officer of the Order of the Three Stars, (the highest award in Latvia) to the preservation of the culinary heritage. Research base: associates of Masilune – relatives (n = 5), students of culinary courses (n = 1). Research period – 2021, 2022. The research has a practical significance, because during the research a redesign was developed for the book published in 1992 by Masilune. The research results were obtained using theoretical research methods: research and analysis of scientific, journalistic literature and Internet resources, which reveal the nature of the relevant problem, as well as conducted interviews.

Abstract:
For centuries, astronomers have built larger telescopes attempting to collect more light so fainter objects could be studied, but resigned to the fact that such larger telescopes would not provide higher resolution. It was until 1970, when Antoine Labeyrie notice the significant difference between short-exposure and the long-exposure images astronomers were used to see. Labeyrie reasoned that each speckle present in the short-exposure image was actually a diffraction-limited image formed by the telescope. He concluded that a short-exposure image contains high resolution information not present in the long-exposure counterpart, and invented a method to extract such high resolution information that is termed speckle interferometry.

Abstract:
The 22nd issue of the 1978 Arquitecturas Bis, entitled "After Modern Architecture", reproduces three articles published in Oppositions magazine No. 5, 6 and 7, where Mario Gandelsonas and Peter Eisenman contributed "Neo and Post-functionalism" respectively and Antony Vidler “A third typology”. Together with other texts by R Moneo, Oriol Bohigas and Helio Piñón, they strive to understand what it implies, contains and what the scope of the title is that Kenneth Frampton had designated in 1973. Underlying in them is a “third way,” which is neither neo-rationalist, nor neorealist, but rather aims to re-establish the recoverable foundations of modernity as long as it was declared as a public service to transform society. This new architecture would focus on its disciplinary debates, while expanding its cultural base, serving the new social needs and integrating the culture of difference, from overcoming mythological history through situating ourselves “in the meantime” in time. The latest Pritzker, and some architecture awarded by professional associations, or the most debated today is presented dry, crude, informal nevertheless sustainable, efficient, ecological, low-cost, which point both to a stripped simplification and a new radical realism. In what follows we will try to verify if any of this new architecture responds to that third way that the theoreticians pointed out as a hypothesis in the initial debates.

Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative analysis of selected urban proposals of the architect Antonio Bonet, through two contrasting pieces covering a time span of thirty years (1945-1975). The opposition includes two stages, two landscapes and two different scales, the stage in Argentina-Uruguay and the Spanish stage, the Atlantic forest and the Mediterranean forest, are: the urbanization of Punta Ballena, Maldonado, Uruguay (1945-48) and the HIFRENSA Settlement, L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Tarragona, Spain (1967-1975). The analysis focuses on two aspects: road layout and landscape. Bonet's work with Sert, unlike other Spanish architects of his generation, is characterized by having a solid theoretical foundation. Bonet assists, with only 20 years, the CIAM IV, Athens (1933), was a student member of GATCPAC and worked with Sert, Torres-Clavé and Le Corbusier. In 1949, assists the CIAM VII in Bérgamo as Uruguayan-Argentine delegate. In the selected works, in general, cannot establish a clear line separating architecture and urbanism.

Abstract:
The US Congress codified the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), the nation’s most effective cultural resources legislation to date, mostly through establishing the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The NHPA requires Federal agencies to address their cultural resources, which are defined as any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure, or object. Section 110 of the NHPA requires Federal agencies to inventory and evaluate their cultural resources, and Section 106 requires them to determine the effect of Federal undertakings on those potentially eligible for the NRHP. Fort Hunter Liggett is located on California’s Central Coast within Monterey County. The fort has been used as a training facility for large-scale maneuvers and live-fire exercises since its establishment as a US Army training facility in 1941. The periods of significance for Criterion A are: from 1769 to 1833, relating to the founding and development of Mission San Antonio de Padua; from 1834 to 1923, relating to Euro-American land grants and ranchos; from 1923 to 1940, relating to Hearst’s purchase of the property and subsequent development; from 1940 to 1945, relating to the establishment of the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation (HLMR) and activities related to WWII; from 1959 to 1970, relating to the establishment and buildup of CDEC; and from 1975 to 1980, relating to HLMR’s redesignation as Fort Hunter Liggett and associated development. This report provides a comprehensive historic context for ranges, features, and buildings at Fort Hunter Liggett in support of Section 110 of the NHPA.

Fifty objects, from original bronzes and maquettes by Antoni Gaudí, to modern furniture and appliances, and Cobi, Javier Mariscal's design adopted for the mascot of the Olympic Games in 1992. The exhibit was developed with Barcelona architects Juli Capella and Quim Larrea, and presented in honor of the 38th Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors held in March, 1997 in Barcelona. Most of the important 20th century Catalonian designers were represented, including Monegal, Sert, Bonet, Ricard, Tusquets, Lluscà, and Tresserra. Works were loaned from the Gaudí Museum at the Temple of the Holy Family, the Museum of Decorative Arts; the Museum of Arts, Industries and Popular Traditions; the National Museum of Catalonian Art, the Catalonian College of Architects, and the private collection of Juli Capella.
