Abstract:
AbstractMornes Patates is the youngest volcano in Dominica occupying a depression on the southwestern flank of a larger stratovolcano, Morne Plat Pays. Within the depression an arcuate ridge, apparently of acid andesite lavas, has been cored and largely buried by the explosive emplacement of two acid andesite domes and their associated pyroclastic deposits, mainly block-and-ash flow deposits. A basaltic scoria horizon, exposed on the northern side of the depression, has a 14C age of 28450 ± 1500 years B.P. and is not seen on the volcano itself, which suggests that the domes and pyroclastic rocks are younger than this. A 14C age of 450 ± 90 years B.P. from a block-and-ash flow deposit from the Morne Patates dome apparently confirms this and the youthful morphology also suggests a young age. The angular shape of the depression and the steep submarine slopes are consistent with an origin as a lateral gravity slide rather than a caldera collapse. Vigorous fumarolic activity and swarms of local earthquakes suggest that magma exists at depth (several kilometres) beneath the Morne Patates–Morne Plat Pays area.

Abstract:
AbstractIle de la Possession is one of the few islands in the southern Indian Ocean, making the island a valuable place to reconstruct past environmental and climatic changes. In this study a peat sediment core was analysed to reconstruct the changes that occurred before, during and after the eruption of the Morne Rouge (10 000–5500 14C yr bp) volcano. In addition to sedimentological analyses, diatom communities were used to reconstruct humidity and altitude, based on existing transfer functions. Radiocarbon dating of a tephra layer showed that the Morne Rouge volcano erupted between 6700–6600 cal. yr bp, giving a much more precise time scale for this event. The eruption was preceded by a tsunami flooding, indicated by the high numbers of marine diatoms found immediately before the tephra layer. After the eruption pioneer diatom species recolonized the coring site. Evidence is presented of the late climatic optimum around 3050 cal. yr bp, preceded by a cooling event until 6600 cal. yr bp. Nutrient input from elephant seals and wandering albatrosses obscured the climate signal for the last 600 cal yr bp.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Controversy persists in western Newfoundland regarding Pleistocene, particularly Late Wisconsinan, glacial ice volumes. Independently, a set of alpine glacial deposits on the flanks of the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park has attracted much attention but little scrutiny. In this study, cosmogenic nuclide dating of the alpine deposits places some limits on post-late glacial maximum (LGM) ice dynamics in the vicinity of the Tablelands, a plateau bounded on the northeast by Trout River Gulch. Small valleys incised into the flanks of the Tablelands are floored with a diamict that contains both till and ice-contact deposits. Rock glaciers rest on the diamict, and rock glacierization also has affected talus lining the south wall of Trout River Gulch. A small moraine rests in the Devil's Punchbowl cirque. The cirque moraine, lobate deposits below the cirque moraine, rock glaciers, and a colluvial veneer overlying the till in the small valleys have cosmogenic 36Cl ages as old as either ca. 20 or 15 ka, depending on what erosion rate is assumed, indicating that these bodies are Late Wisconsinan in age but post-date the local LGM. Trout River Gulch was deglaciated early and perhaps did not contain active ice even at the LGM, but previous work shows that ice was streaming seaward both north of Trout River Gulch and south of the Tablelands even as the gulch lay relatively ice free.

Abstract:
At various coastal and inland sites in and around Gros Morne National Park in western Newfoundland, photographs taken periodically over many decades illustrate the physical stability of landforms. ἀese images provide a convenient, qualitative way to track the development of stone rings and patterned ground, the movement of rocks along intertidal platforms, changes to marine estuaries and to alluvial rivers and fans, temporal trends in late-lying snow beds along mountain tops, and slope failure by landslides and rock falls. ἀis study has established a spatial and temporal photographic record of slope failures along the steep cliḀs of Western Brook Pond, showing that nearly all of the sites identiᴀed in earlier studies as high risk of failure have remained stable. In contrast, thin-skinned landslides along Winter House Brook have remained active for at least 100 years. Little evidence of physical changes in patterned ground features in Trout River Gulch was found, other than frost-heaving in soils disturbed by road construction. Fluctuations from year to year in the level of gravel beaches along parts of the coast are common, and blow-outs continue to modify coastal sand dunes. Apart from certain engineered sites where change was obviously driven by direct human activities, the immediate cause or “driver” of change was natural (non-human), the result of gravitational instability, heavy precipitation, wave and storm action, frost heaving, and other background processes of the sort that long pre-date the coming of people to the region. Continuation of this kind of inexpensive, non-invasive monitoring can assist in assessing ecological integrity, managing public safety, and interpreting landscape processes for Park visitors.

Abstract:
A floristic and vegetational survey of two recently established national parks in the poorly known mountains of southern Haiti, i.e. Parc National Pic Macaya (in the Massif de La Hotte) and Parc National Morne La Visite (in the Massif de La Selle), clearly documents the rich and highly endemic nature of the tracheophyte (especially angiosperm) flora of the parks, and confirms E.L. Ekman's early reports of the region's flora. This study resulted in the recollection of most of the region's described endemic species, along with the discovery of several new angiosperms, i.e. Wallenia formonensis, Ilex blancheana, Micropholis polita subsp. hotteana, Mecranium revolutum, Meriania parvifolia, M. brevipedunculata, Miconia macayana, Ossaea woodsii, Lobelia hotteana, Salvia sp., Rhytidophyllum sp., Pilea sp., and Ditta sp. One new combination, Garcinia barkeriana, is made. A total of 470 species of tracheophytes (including 367 angiosperms, but excluding orchids), 99 mosses, and 63 liverworts was collected in Parc National Pic Macaya, and of these, 136 vascular plants (ca 29%) are endemic to Hispaniola. The vegetation of the park may be divided into two major types. A very diverse wet forest on limestone occurs from ca 800 to 1250 m alt. At higher elevations this forest is replaced by a complex mosaic of pine forest and cloud forest, both of which contain many local endemics. A total of 325 species of tracheophytes (including 262 angiosperms, but excluding orchids), 76 mosses, and 19 liverworts was collected in Parc National Morne La Visite, and of these, 112 vascular plants (ca 34%) are endemic to Hispaniola. The plant communities occurring in the La Visite region may be placed in two general categories: pine forest and cloud forest. The former occupies the bowl-shaped plateau of the Massif de La Selle while the latter occurs on the steep more or less north facing slopes along the edge of the plateau and in the major ravines dissecting it. The forests of both parks are being despoiled by cutting and burning by the local inhabitants. Protection of the forested localities remaining in the parks is mandatory to preserve the region's many endemic species and natural beauty.
