Hughes, Steven. "After the democracy : Athens under Phocion (322/1-319/8 B.C.)." University of Western Australia. School of Humanities, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0256.

Full text
Abstract:
After the defeat of the Greek forces in the Lamian War the Athenians agreed to Antipater's demand for unconditional surrender. As result of the terms the Macedonian general demanded Phocion became pre-eminent in Athens for a few years from 322/1 to 319/8 B.C. It is my belief that, although he did not seek to become leader in Athens, Phocion none-the-less accepted his new role out of a sense of duty and a firm belief that he was the only person suited for the job. Here was a man whose logical, pragmatic and unemotional attitude to political and world affairs enabled him to rise above what he believed to be the short-sightedness of his contemporaries and accurately assess the future for Athens and the city-state's place in the new world order. Of course our picture of Phocion is taken, mainly, from Plutarch's encomiastic Life of Phocion. According to his account the Athenian general and statesman did not want war but peace and prosperity. He did not believe the Athenians capable of defeating Macedonia. Instead, he felt that the people should accept their new position in the world and make the best of the situation. It should not be forgotten, however, that Plutarch was writing at a time when Europe was under the yoke of the new superpower: Rome. He saw the benefits of living in Greece at a time when the city-states were no longer continually involved in internecine warfare. It was, perhaps, this appreciation of the state of his own world, gained with the benefit of hindsight, that gave rise to his admiration of (what he perceived to be) Phocion's foresight. Phocion appeared to understand, as Plutarch did, that there was no reason why Athens could not still be prosperous. Plutarch's Phocion saw the city-state's future as no longer being primarily reliant on military preparedness but rather on trade and sound economic policy. With the protection of the powerful Macedonian overlord Athens would be free to enjoy life in relative peace and prosperity. Ultimately, Plutarch has had a significant influence on our understanding and appreciation of Phocion the general, statesman and man. The aim of this paper then is, with the use of other primary and secondary sources, to look beyond Plutarch's encomium and attempt to find the real Phocion. In particular, I will be examining the aging general's role in Athenian affairs after the Lamian War. This pivotal time in Athenian history has received too little attention. Life in Athens changed dramatically after Antipater defeated the Greek forces at the Battle of Crannon. The Athenians lost their freedom and autonomy and were fated never to regain the hegemony of the Greeks. Moreover, they had failed to live up to the glorious deeds of their ancestors. It was Phocion's task to help his people to come to terms with this new state of affairs and to find a place for Athens in the new world order. And so, political life in Athens was turned upside down as democracy was changed to oligarchy.

Morse, Cheryl Lynn. "Turning Points: Stories of How Students Get Beyond Antipathy Toward an Academic Course." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2481.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the narratives of 10 students who began an academic course with strong negative attitudes but finished the course with strong positive attitudes. In the beginning of the course, each student exhibited one of these three tendencies: apathetic, compliant, or disillusioned; however, by the end of the course, they exhibited a transformed disposition. This study attempts to answer the question of what the turning points were for their transformation and how they made the change. The findings of this study were that regardless of individual tendencies, the ability to exercise agency was the principal turning point for these students, followed by seeing that relevance in their own lives, and taking the initiative to approach the teacher with problems. An unexpected finding was how students with a transforming tendency tend to see learning as a spiritual activity and that through faith, acknowledging others, reverence, and humility, they can change their strong negative attitudes toward a course.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Allians, Sympati, Metod, Psykoterapi, Antipati

Fish, Sarah. "The association between childhood experiences of parental neglect and antipathy, schemas, adult attachments and positive symptoms of psychosis." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.527645.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Childhood experiences of parental neglect and antipathy have been found to associate with positive symptoms of psychosis. Cognitive models (e. g. Garety, Kuipers, Fowler, Freeman, & Bebbington, 2001) propose that negative beliefs of self and others (schemas), which are associated with childhood adversities, influence the development and maintenance of positive symptoms. Similarly, adult attachment patterns are found to associate with childhood parental neglect and relate with positive symptoms. To date, no study has investigated the relationships between parental neglect and antipathy and specific positive symptoms in a sample of individuals with early psychosis in relation to both schemas and adult attachments. The study aimed to investigate if parental neglect and antipathy were associated with specific positive symptoms, and if these relationships were mediated by negative schemas and anxious and avoidant adult attachments. Methods: The study was a cross sectional within-subject design. Participants were a clinical sample of patients from the Central Norfolk Early Intervention Service for first episode psychosis (N = 59). Participants completed self-report questionnaires and semi-structured interviews during routine clinical appointments. Results: Increased negative self and other schema and anxious and avoidant attachment related to parental neglect and antipathy, and levels of depression did not. The findings offered a preliminary indication, that negative schematic beliefs of others may mediate the relationship between parental neglect and antipathy and paranoia, and avoidant attachment may mediate the relationship with anomalous experiences (akin to hallucinations). Conclusions: Findings support previous research and cognitive models, illustrating that negative schemas, and avoidant attachments are key variables in understanding the relationships between early adversities and symptoms in first episode psychosis. The current results were based on a small sample, and need to be replicated in methodologically sound studies to increase the reliability and validity of findings.

James, Wynona Yvonne. "Imprint of Racism: A Phenomenological Study on White Adult Males' Exposure to Racial Antipathy, Historical Stereotypes, and Polarization Towards African Americans and Their Transformational Journey Towards Racial Reconciliation." Thesis, NSUWorks, 2018. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/shss_dcar_etd/117.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the election of the first African American president in 2008, race relations have deteriorated in the United States. In May 2017, the emergence of the “alt-right” movement advocating for white nationalism caused further polarization between the races. This transcendental phenomenological research examined how white adult males’ exposure to racist ideologies influenced their perceptions towards African Americans, and how they emancipated from environments that promoted racist tenets. The study was guided by three research questions: How have white males been impacted by their exposure to racial antipathy and discrimination? What events or circumstances have white males experienced that led them to denouncing negative racial stereotypes and/or participation with hate groups? And, what efforts have they made to reconcile with individuals or groups they have harmed in the past? The literature review revealed racial conflict is a social phenomenon evolving from historical narratives posited by fear, social class, and white superiority. By employing qualitative data analysis, interviewing eight participants, and applying the theoretical lenses of critical race theory, social Darwinism, hate theory, and regenerative justice, the primary essence of the phenomenon acknowledged individuals are mentally and emotionally affected by negative historical narratives about racism. Six major themes evolved: 1) Familial Influences, 2) Southern White Experience, 3) Education and Race Relations, 4) Spiritual Convictions, 5) Immersion into the African American Experience, and 6) Physical and Mental Emancipation. The findings in this study contribute to the field of conflict resolution by advocating for advanced exploration into socio-psychology, racial reconciliation, and restorative justice.

Levine, Andrew. "Conceited Souls and Renaissance Cures: Sympathetic Magic Between Bodies in Shakespeare's Hamlet." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8414.

Full text
Abstract:
Using the sixteenth-century theories of sympathies to examine the inter-character relationships in Hamlet, I argue for a period reading that offers insight into Hamlet’s delay and the basis for his problematic relationships with Gertrude and Ophelia. Asserting Hamlet’s character as an observer in the play with the ultimate goal of healing the infected state of Denmark, this examination of Hamlet explores how sympathetic healing would function between the characters of Hamlet, the Ghost, Gertrude, and Ophelia. Such a reading would present these characters as vulnerable bodies capable of directly affecting each other over a physical distance. Hamlet’s ultimate tragedy then would arise from his failures to engage with these sympathetic forces effectively, resulting in his inability to find the proper cure for his state.

Lin, Chia-en. "Performance Engineering of Software Web Services and Distributed Software Systems." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500103/.

Full text
Abstract:
The promise of service oriented computing, and the availability of Web services promote the delivery and creation of new services based on existing services, in order to meet new demands and new markets. As Web and internet based services move into Clouds, inter-dependency of services and their complexity will increase substantially. There are standards and frameworks for specifying and composing Web Services based on functional properties. However, mechanisms to individually address non-functional properties of services and their compositions have not been well established. Furthermore, the Cloud ontology depicts service layers from a high-level, such as Application and Software, to a low-level, such as Infrastructure and Platform. Each component that resides in one layer can be useful to another layer as a service. It hints at the amount of complexity resulting from not only horizontal but also vertical integrations in building and deploying a composite service. To meet the requirements and facilitate using Web services, we first propose a WSDL extension to permit specification of non-functional or Quality of Service (QoS) properties. On top of the foundation, the QoS-aware framework is established to adapt publicly available tools for Web services, augmented by ontology management tools, along with tools for performance modeling to exemplify how the non-functional properties such as response time, throughput, or utilization of services can be addressed in the service acquisition and composition process. To facilitate Web service composition standards, in this work we extended the framework with additional qualitative information to the service descriptions using Business Process Execution Language (BPEL). Engineers can use BPEL to explore design options, and have the QoS properties analyzed for the composite service. The main issue in our research is performance evaluation in software system and engineering. We researched the Web service computation as the first half of this dissertation, and performance antipattern detection and elimination in the second part. Performance analysis of software system is complex due to large number of components and the interactions among them. Without the knowledge of experienced experts, it is difficult to diagnose performance anomalies and attempt to pinpoint the root causes of the problems. Software performance antipatterns are similar to design patterns in that they provide what to avoid and how to fix performance problems when they appear. Although the idea of applying antipatterns is promising, there are gaps in matching the symptoms and generating feedback solution for redesign. In this work, we analyze performance antipatterns to extract detectable features, influential factors, and resource involvements so that we can lay the foundation to detect their presence. We propose system abstract layering model and suggestive profiling methods for performance antipattern detection and elimination. Solutions proposed can be used during the refactoring phase, and can be included in the software development life cycle. Proposed tools and utilities are implemented and their use is demonstrated with RUBiS benchmark.

Abstract:
Dr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.

Stephan, Matthew. "Detection of Java EE EJB Antipattern Instances using Framework-Specific Models." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/4362.

Full text
Abstract:
Adding flexibility to a process or technology often comes with a price. This holds true in the case of the amendments made to Java EE platform to upgrade to version 5. Java EE 5 allows Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) developers the ability to configure EJBs via Java 5 annotations, through XML deployment descriptors, or through a combination of both. While this adds flexibility to the EJB configuration process, it also comes with the price of an EJB project's stakeholder not being able to ascertain the current configuration of an EJB project until runtime, due to the multiple sources of configuration and the complex overriding rules. Furthermore, to detect errors in configuration or perform antipattern instance detection it is clearly beneficial to have a representation of an EJB project that accurately represents the current configuration of the system. This thesis first presents an EJB Framework Specific Modeling Language (FSML) that formalizes the EJB domain's specific components in the form of a cardinality-based feature model. By having such a model and using and extending the existing FSML infrastructure, one retrieves a Framework Specific Model (FSM) through reverse engineering that represents all the information from the various sources of EJB configuration. By analyzing this FSM, we can create another model that represents the resolved configuration of an EJB project. We employ model filtration to highlight specific sources of configuration. We then use open-source and custom EJB projects to evaluate the EJB FSML and the resolved model. Models admit antipattern instance detection. This thesis presents two methods for running antipattern instance detection on an EJB project using existing EJB antipatterns in literature: 1) queries in Java that execute against the resolved configuration model; and 2) queries written in .QL, an object-oriented query language, against the EJB project's source code. We compare these two techniques qualitatively and propose a new approach based on this comparison that entails modeling the antipatterns and their symptoms within an FSML model declaratively.
