Abstract:
In accordance with the rules in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, the type species for the genus Edessa Fabricius, 1803 is now recognized to be Cimex antilope Fabricius, 1798 rather than the previously recognized Cimex cervus Fabricius, 1787. Edessa antilope is redescribed, as well as the following four species that have in the past been related or compared to E. antilope: E. arabs (Linnaeus, 1758) from French Guiana, Costa Rica and Panama (new record), E. helix Erichson, 1848 from Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Suriname (new record), Guyana, Brazil (new record), Bolivia (new record) and Argentina (new record), E. ibex Breddin, 1903 from Costa Rica, Panama (new record), Ecuador, Brazil (new record), Peru and Bolivia (new record), and E. taurina Stål, 1862 from Mexico, Guatemala, Belize (new record), Honduras (new record). The distribution of Edessa antilope is expanded to Venezuela. The female of E. antilope and the male of E. taurina are described for the first time. Edessa antilope is removed from the synonymy of E. arabs and reinstated as valid species; additionally, E. costalis Stål, 1872 is removed from the synonym of E. helix and is placed as a junior synonym of E. antilope. Edessa saiga Breddin, 1903 is considered a junior synonym of E. ibex. Lectotypes are designated for all species. A key is provided for the identification of the species.

Abstract:
A 24-hour heavy rainfall event occurred in northeastern France from November 3 to 4, 2014. The accuracy of the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) by PANTHERE and ANTILOPE radar-based gridded products during this particular event, is examined at both mesoscale and local scale, in comparison with two reference rain-gauge networks. Mesoscale accuracy was assessed for the total rainfall accumulated during the 24-hour event, using the Météo France operational rain-gauge network. Local scale accuracy was assessed for both total event rainfall and hourly rainfall accumulations, using the recently developed HydraVitis high-resolution rain gauge network Evaluation shows that (1) PANTHERE radar-based QPE underestimates rainfall fields at mesoscale and local scale; (2) both PANTHERE and ANTILOPE successfully reproduced the spatial variability of rainfall at local scale; (3) PANTHERE underestimates can be significantly improved at local scale by merging these data with rain gauge data interpolation (i.e., ANTILOPE). This study provides a preliminary evaluation of radar-based QPE at local scale, suggesting that merged products are invaluable for applications at very high resolution. The results obtained underline the importance of using high-density rain-gauge networks to obtain information at high spatial and temporal resolution, for better understanding of local rainfall variation, to calibrate remotely sensed rainfall products.

Abstract:

Abstract:
2012/2013

Abstract:
In this work, in order to study the relationship between tectonic structures and seismicity, we show results of the experiment SISMANTILLES I on the central Lesser Antilles Subduction Zone where the North and South American plates converge with the Caribbean in a roughly ENE direction, at a rate of about 2 cm/yr. This motion is responsible for volcanic and seismic activity of the Lesser Antilles region. We analyzed local seismicity by using the data recorded, from November 1999 to January 2002, by a temporary combined on/offshore network. A data-set of 155 well located earthquakes, with a total of 4054 and 2617 pickings for P- S-waves respectively, was used to compute first a minimum 1-D velocity model which served as starting model for the subsequent 3-D inversion. To partly estimate the huge structural heterogeneity, the minimum 1-D model is complemented by station corrections that take into account near surface velocity heterogeneity and the geometry of the crust. In particular, the OBS station-terms are in general positive with respect to land stations indicating late arrivals, consistently with the presence of soft mud and sediments at the sea-bottom. The OBS station-terms vary with the thickness of sediments as can be derived here from multi-channel reflection seismic profiles shot over them. The inversion for 3-D P-velocity crustal structure was performed by iteratively solving the coupled hypocentre-velocity problem in a least-squares sense. Careful analysis of the resolution capability of our data set outlines the well-resolved features for interpretation. The resulting 3-D velocity model of the Lesser Antilles region shows that, in the investigated area, the island arc is divided into three layers (upper, middle and lower crust) characterized by a total average thickness of 23-24 km. P-wave velocities between sedimentary values and 6.0 km/s mark the upper crust that is interpreted to consist mainly of volcaniclastics and igneous rocks. Instead the bulk composition of the middle crust (Vp <6.8 km/s) is interpreted to be felsic to intermediate. Finally a plutonic lower crust, that shows P-wave velocities increasing from 7.1 km/s to 7.3 km/s, forms a layer extending from the forearc to the backarc domain. With regards earthquake locations, we observe a very low seismic activity beneath OBS stations that, on the contrary, is mainly concentrated east of the island arc. During the 13-month observation period available, hypocentral distribution highlights earthquakes mostly located between the island arc backstop and the subducting oceanic crust. At depth greater than 50 km we detect earthquakes that can be linked to dehydration of sepertinized slab mantle. In the centre of the arc near 15° 30 , beneath Dominique island, there is a clear concentration of deep events. It is in this area that on November 29, 2007 a 7.4 Mw intraplate earthquake occurred at 150 km depth. A first observation from earthquake locations map suggests that certain seismicity coincides with the extrapolated surface trace of the Tiburon ridge that several authors considered aseismic. Another remark is the no significant seismicity detected either in the accretionnary prism or in the outer forearc region. In our study area we may assume that the inner forearc controls the seismicity since the main seismic activity begins at its eastern border. The occurrence of a high seismicity level far from the backstop position and locate in the slab could be explained by slab bending.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis homes in on Anna-Liisa Antila-Kaljunen (1915–2006), a member of the first generation of the newly established Republic of Finland, exploring her life and work as artist and teacher educator. In addition to archival material, the thesis also utilizes personal recollections of Antila-Kaljunen. The principal aim of the thesis was to investigate how a female secondary school graduate of the 1930’s built a distinguished professional career in three fields: music, education and music education. Her term as the first publicly-elected organist of the Evangelical-Lutheran church made her a pioneer, whose status and professional competence were widely admired in contemporary press reports. Another aim involved comparing the education Antila-Kaljunen received to the development of musical education in Finland. Yet another strand of research examined the interaction between teacherhood and artistic identity. Serving as the methodological backbone of this thesis, life course analysis allowed tracking all changes within Antila-Kaljunen’s lifespan, including transitions, opportunities and restrictions, societal changes, human relationships or educational and work-related choices and activities. For a performing musician, competence and self-efficacy were deemed as central building blocks of agency, while narrative analysis comprised the main tool for studying recollections. In recollections of Antila-Kaljunen, three factors stand out: her significance, exemplarity and influence as teacher. Specific emphasis can be placed on mentoring, which appears to have formed a meaningful undercurrent for a number of her teacher-student relationships, particularly for students with a musical orientation. A key contribution of this thesis involves appreciating and acknowledging a teacher’s work in a wider perspective than just one lifetime. Moreover, the thesis points out how the Second World War shaped the lives and careers of the wartime generation and the choices they made. The road to performing artist was long and winding, but Antila-Kaljunen, who was talented and musically-inclined, eventually got to fulfil her educational and professional ambitions independently and without restrictions. Her achievements as a musician and teacher hinged on an ethos of versatility, manifested through goodness and beauty
Tiivistelmä Väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan itsenäisen Suomen ensimmäiseen sukupolveen kuuluneen Anna-Liisa Antila-Kaljusen (1915–2006) elämää ja toimintaa taiteilijana ja opettajankouluttajana. Arkistoaineiston lisäksi tutkimuksessa on käytetty hänestä kerättyä muistelukerrontaa.

Abstract:
Aim of this study, conducted in the Republic of Djibouti, was to improve knowledge on Beira (Dorcatragus megalotis) ecology, a threatened and poorly known antelope. Four topics were developed during this study : (1) up-date and specify data on the beira population size, distribution and density within the occurrence area; (2) describe the beira social and spatial organisation for a phylogenetic perspective; (3) analyze the temperature effect on the activity rhythm and habitat use, in order to determine if the decrease of tree cover constitutes a threat for the species survival; and (4) determine the beira and domestic goats diets to establish if goats are potential competitors for beira and if overgrazing by goats constitute a threat for the long-term survival of the beira. Data collected revealed that the djiboutian Beira population size is small and that its occurrence area has regressed during the last decade. Beira appeared to live in small mixed sex units including a single adult male and from one to three adult females. Units are very cohesive and tend to form an intricate mosaic of territories. Furthermore, during the hottest season, mid-day shadow requirement influence the activity rhythm, which revealed the primordial importance of tree cover. At last, during the cool season, when vegetation is the most diverse and abundant, beiras and domestic goats exhibit contrasted diets. Nevertheless, overgrazing favoured plant species largely consumed by goats but not by beiras. The results obtained during this study confirm and specify Beira threats and enhance the necessity to apply conservation measure favouring this emblematic species in situ survival

Kruger, Marius. "The status, distribution and ecology of the Klipspringer in the Kruger National Park." Diss., 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28436.

Full text
Abstract:
The status, distribution and ecology of klipspringer were studied in the Kruger National Park. For the status and distribution, the Kruger National Park south of the Olifants River was used as the study area. Data on the status and distribution were gathered from all the ranger sections in the study area with the use of a non-sampling method, namely a systematic search. The results showed that the klipspringer population in the Kruger National Park is secure with a patchy distribution consisting of 773 individuals in the study area and a sex ratio of one male per 1.1 female. The ecology of the klipspringer was studied in a specific study area on the Nwatindlopfu spruit between Skukuza and Tshokwane where five klipspringer individuals were radio collared. The aspects covered in the study on the ecology of klipspringer, were the activities associated with environmental and vegetation related variables as well as scent-marking. It was found that vegetation is the determining factor in the habitat selection of klipspringer in the Kruger National Park, in that it provides both shelter and food. The ideal klipspringer habitat can be described as an area that has limited access to other ungulates that can attract predators. The vegetation should consist of palatable plant species that could be utilized by klipspringer, and must also provide sufficient shelter against possible danger. Klipspringer scent marks were surveyed in a specific klipspringer range in the Kruger National Park with the use of a strip transect method. Both the male and the female klipspringer scent-mark their ranges. A pair of pre-orbital glands below the eyes produces the scent. The secretion produced is a sticky milky substance that is deposited on a suitable twig. The results showed that klipspringer in the Kruger National Park scent-¬mark more frequently on the boundaries of their ranges and also more on those sides where there is another resident klipspringer group.

Abstract:
This chapter examines hoplite equipment. Although elements of the bronze panoply associated with the classical hoplite began to appear in the late eighth century, what set the hoplite apart from his predecessors was above all his distinctive heavy wooden shield with a double handle, which is first attested circa 700 BC. This date may therefore be regarded as the beginning of the hoplite era. The shield has a central metal armband (the porpax), through which the bearer thrust his left forearm up to the elbow, and a hand grip (antilabe), at the rim of the shield, that he grasped with his left hand. A great deal of the debate about the origins of the classical phalanx centers on what the adoption of this type of shield might imply about the nature of hoplite fighting and battle formations.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights elements of Lula’s background and personality, including soccer, while using his experience between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three to explore the complexities of individual consciousness. In doing so, it distinguishes between socialization, personal dispositions, and truths so well established that they stand as simple “facts” of working-class life, including hunger, unemployment, and deeply despotic authority. Tracing the sources of an inchoate discontent, this chapter explains how this nonactivist worker first glimpsed perceived injustice but was untouched by leftist labor leaders and activists’ diagnosis of workers’ problems as derived from a system of exploitation (capitalism) backed by an antilabor dictatorship with powerful foreign patrons.

Abstract:
The epilogue assesses the state of the labor movement in the years immediately after the end of the book’s narrative. It argues that the efforts at organizing Florida workers drew consistent employer resistance. Such occurrences as the city’s labor newspaper changing its name from the Miami News to the Miami Citizen in November 1937 indicated a call for class harmony through democratic process and negotiation of living wages. The successful elimination of the poll tax, the organizing of a Black longshoremen’s local, and the AFL’s Building Trades Council organizing of Black tile setters, among other efforts, demonstrated the potential of the union movement. Florida employers fought these efforts through such activities as antilabor legislation, culminating in the passage of the 1944 right-to-work amendment.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that change in the U.S. labor movement from American Federation of Labor (AFL) craft unionism to Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO) industrial unionism largely lay behind Jersey City’s opposition to the CIO in 1937, not just Mayor Hague’s supposed antilabor inclinations. Hague aligned with AFL unions, but Depression and New Deal labor laws weakened them, while boosting CIO industrial unionism and its appeal to suffering Jersey manufacturing workers, including women and African Americans. Moreover, the CIO’s class-conscious culture of “working-class Americanism” clashed with Hague’s ethnicity-based rhetoric of “Patriotic Americanism.” Meanwhile, interwar anticommunism intensified Jersey City’s opposition to CIO organizers, who themselves drew on Popular Front rhetoric of antifascism to oppose “dictatorial” regimes like Hague’s. This polarization complicated Jersey City’s reception of the CIO.

Abstract:
This chapter explains the basic idea of collective bargaining. It considers collective bargaining as a powerful tool that workers can use to assert their rights, share in governance of the institutions they are part of, and reshape rules, processes, policies, and systems to bring about greater fairness and better lives for all. It also describes collective bargaining as a practice that people can use to transform the ways in which neighborhoods, cities, school and health-care systems, government agencies, and multinational corporations behave. The chapter looks at some facts about the antilabor bias that permeates too many corners of the educational system and the mass media in the United States. It emphasizes how the realities of collective bargaining is an essential foundation to considering how this powerful tool can be used to improve the lives of people.
