As a public space at the crossroads of actors and concerns, the city centre is at the centre of many social, political, commercial and tourist issues. The aim of this thesis is to explore this area in order to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the city centre, not only as a field, but also as an object of study. The aim is to define the contours of the city centre and to examine the role of consumption in defining it. An ethnography of the city centre of Rouen, carried out between 2017 and 2023, shows an analogy between the commercial space and the city centre. The results reveal a city centre organised around the concept of proximity and the importance of its dual temporal and affective dimensions. Finally, they highlight the extent to which proximity can be a brake on commercial attractiveness when it interferes with intimacy. In this way, this research helps us to understand the role of consumption in what the city centre is and what makes it what it is

The morphological analysis of the restoredplan of rouen in 1730, associated with theuse of conventional sources, archeological data, texts, archives, leads to the understanding of the growing phases of the city from its creation to the beginning of the 18th century. Rouen has been developed part after part, and did not spread continuously, in effect to decisions taking into consideration planning projects, economical developments and political or religious programmes. The systematical analysis of the houses anterior to 1800, existingor demolished, give the link between buildings and tenements, and the morphology of the associated buildings. The renewal of the houses can be described from the 14th century, and their shape and evolution from the 12th century. The social phenomenons are here clearly legible. The urban morphology shows, with an appropriate reading, the historical phenomenons that have brought its formation and lead its evolution. The historical topography can so be constituted as a proper domain of investigation. The application to rouen of the method defined in this thesis resulted in a comprehensive whole of data about the city's historyn, out of reach by a direct reading of sources

This topographical and socio-economic study of a part of urban space in Rouen at the end of middle age turns on three parishes of the town situated near the cathedral and representing more than seven hectares. The method of topographical exploiting is executed in three times: elaboration of documents for each parcel, then assemblage of parcels in a mounting arrangement to finish with propositions of cadastral drawings. The chronological approach of the area and its urbanization, records the main events related to this part of the town, urbanized since the first century after Jesus Christ, and ends with the construction of the “royal palace” at the extreme end of the fifteenth century. The study of accommodation is facilitated for the XIth - XIIIth centuries by the existence of many relics of houses which completes successfully a limited literature. The topographical restitution undertaken for the XIVth and XVth centuries permits in return a more complete analysis of frame and parcel organization. The real estate is studied on economical and juridical side. When before the second half of XIVth , the data sources overestimate the place of religious institutions, extension of sources after this date allowed a more complete knowledge of this market. Analysis on the inhabitants concerns especially the XVth century. They are particularly interested in profession or condition mentions and also in people mobility, but with more difficulties in way of life. The conclusion takes stock of contributions and limits of the method employed and asks the question of using it in other places

Since the publication of the “Solidarité et Renouvellement Urbain” law on 2000, supplemented by the “Urbanisme et Habitat” law, the discourse on the operational urban planning has tinged with an environmental dimension while advocating a better control of the urban sprawl, and consequently a better control of natural and agricultural areas consumption into urban rings. Indeed, the environmental problematic has become one of the major aims that towns must face up to, especially in terms of spatial management. Therefore, the French locals authorities has been invited by the State government to work out both the “Plans Locaux d’Urbanisme” and the “Schéma de Cohérence Territoriale” within which must be planned out the terms of reasoned urban growth on behalf of sustainable development. These policies are part of a re-use of built spaces, in particular within the downtown areas, by a derelict-land reconversion and so an urban space renewal. Also, they base on more strict management about new parcel of land opening for urbanization, mostly in peri-urban spaces. In our approach, we will focalize on the case of the individual detached house who represents the visual symbol of urban sprawl and who is the biggest spatial habitat consumer. Our geographical area is made of municipalities included in the Rouen’s S. C. O. T. And bordering municipalities. At first, this study will starts off from two identification initiatives of individual detached houses, first about news buildings permits from 2000 to 2009 per municipalities (Sitadel datas), and second about private housing estates. Then, the aim is to build a typology about these peri-urban forms from several spatial, environmental and urban parameters

From the 10th to the 15th century, the city of Rouen is a powerful religious center. Seat of the archbishopric, it is home to nearly fifteen religious communities and includes thirty-six parish churches in the late Middle Ages. During the 10th century, these religious communities, who follow a rule, need to integrate an urban space already shaped by the numerous interactions between society and its environment. The integration of a monastic or conventual complex needs to reckon with the other components of the city, such as road networks, residential areas or power centers. Taking the different building blocks of the urban space into account is not the only factor determining the settlement of communities: the chosen area also depends on the observance of the community and the support of influential benefactors. The building of a monastic or conventual complex at the heart of the urban fabric is a relatively long process that requires acquiring and transforming several plots of land. Subsequently, the religious community shapes its environment in the long term whether by successive enlargements or by modifying its surroundings. This enclosure blocks part of the urban space and establishes itself firmly in the city’s parcel plan. Lastly, the communities act – or interact – all over the urban space: on the one hand through their role in the formation of the parish network and on the other hand through the creation of specific urban sectors or their land holdings. These different aspects of the impact of religious communities in the city of Rouen have been studied thanks to a textual database and a geographical information system allowing work at different scales of time and space

This work examines territorial recomposition produced by augmentation and diversification of urban forest outdoor recreation. The thesis interrogates jointly claim and practice and residential ‘choices’, choices in terms of cities and space inside cities. We south to elucidate the reciprocal determination of the various cultures, social relationships and spatial relations in Rouen metropolis (France). Rouen green belt is classified “Exceptional Forest ®” and the forest management is relatively pioneer. The corpus contains 43 semi-structured interviews, documents from several sources (departments of urban planning, administrative reports, newspapers articles, etc.) and several surveys collected by the scale of Rouen metropolis (N=5700), forest-fringe residents (N=661) and outdoor recreation practitioners (N=334). A multi-scale approach reveal how territorial mediations operate as a decision analyser. Practice diversity reveals “territories of the everyday” and different ways of living. Outdoor recreation emergence also allows to observe the urban life physical activities restructuration through the description of the type of practitioners. At the crossing of the logic of socialization (tracks, self-images), the logic of event management (fun runs development) and the appearance of a new metropolitain political scale we analysed how communication affects natural landscape and tend to turn them into “resort”

In an exciting society that has become mostly urban, taking a look at Rouen makes it possible to witness power relationships involving the central authority. This thesis looks at the relationship between the State and the regional areas at a time when the Kingdom of France is going through its last major revolt of the Ancien Régime. The Fronde shakes balances and reveals the daily tensions. Economy, religion, politics and urban culture come together and revel and conflictual society. Rouen exacerbates the rivalries at stake. Rouen at the time is the second biggest city of the Kingdom of France, it is a world city and exports its tensions. In the middle of the 17th Century Rouen is also without a doubt a city going through a crisis that is entangled in this urban hub
