Some geologists argue that the Holocene, our current geological epoch, has now been replaced by the Anthropocene, a new geological time characterized by the irreversible impact of human activity on Earth. This scientific hypothesis is substantiated in large part by the environmental crisis striking the contemporary world. The many ways our environment is declining force us to question the current chances for the planet, and thus humanity, to survive. In the last decades, many works within northern occidental culture have been reflecting this troubling reality through fictitious scenarios. This network of numerous and diverse representations participate in building a social “imaginary” (the French concept of “imaginaire”) of the environmental crisis. This study focuses on such representation in literature by comparing eight novels from France, Canada and the United States, deeming them as « fictions of the Anthropocene ». It investigates what, in fact, contemporary fictions contribute to the social imaginary of the environmental crisis. The works this study concentrates on use common themes such as pollution or global warming, but also elaborate fictitious scenarios which imagine possible futures for an endangered world. Such works depict how the environmental crisis is related to the way we, as humans, dwell in the world. Within this context, it becomes convincingly apparent that the current environmental crisis is profoundly affecting humans individually and collectively. The elaborate writing and the corresponding imaginary of these works confirm the relevance of literary narratives when considering the question of human survival in the Anthropocene

This research reflects on the new forms of social mobilization that emerge in response to the advent of digital networks and the environmental crisis. We value two epistemological axes. The first based on the question of technology beyond the instrumentality and the second on the notion of ecosophy. Our empirical observation network is formed by the groups mobilized around the environmental theme relating to the more than three hundred canalized and buried rivers in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, henceforth visible through digital devices and architectures such as maps, audio guides, collaborative platforms, web sites and social networks. From the immersion in these networks, we try to expand our sociological view considering the social not as the field of exclusive human acting, but as consisting of different beings and modes of existence, including technical objects, natural elements and natural phenomena. In this sense, we propose in this research the concept of movements-network to give form to these new mobilizations and associations characterized by hybridity between the territory and urban, environmental and technical spaces, as well as the desire to dwell the Earth otherwise

This work is about power relations around environmental commons in Bolivia and Ecuador at the beginning of our century. The chronological limits are from the early 2000’s to 2014-2015. It consists in studying the interactions between socio-ecological conflictuality of Amazonian spaces in both countries with the international projections led by Rafael Correa’s government in Ecuador, and Evo Morales’ one in Bolivia. Indeed, the ecological issue has become central to the diplomatic narratives of those governments and has become crucial to their international influence strategies. The two first parts of the PhD. are dedicated to the modalities of the international projections, and to the way their acquired political autonomy was caught up. This phenomenon is inscribed in what I call Ecological Power Relations. The conclusions I drew from this phenomenon invite us to think about a general framework of analysis of those relations, whose strength must be tested later on. That is the heart of the third part. I introduce the concept of Eco-power, which would determine, given the structuring reality of the Anthropocene, new power configurations and dynamics. The tensions around the indigenous autonomy, the Peripheral States’ national sovereignty, and climate justice, are observed through this prism. Eco-power is defined as the polycentric power of life and death over the specie, whose instauration and inertia strength depend on the imposition of unique time and space representation

This thesis aims to question the historical singularity of the Anthropocene concept in the field of Earth sciences, in order to determine whether it can be considered as a reflexive event of Modernity. In order to do so, we undertake an archaeology of this concept according to three temporalities. The first one, from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, questions the status of statements characterizing the global influence of human action. The geological activity of humanity appears to have always been at the heart of modern science. The intermediate temporality of the second part shows how the geological discourse is deeply renewed after the Second World War. The Earth is then reinvented as a total environment within an apparatus of knowledge and power. Finally, the third part, corresponding to the short temporality, analyzes the process of fabrication of the Anthropocene concept, mainly in the Earth system sciences and in geology. Resulting from associations between actors with heterogeneous projects, this process oscillates between a dynamic of extension and a dynamic of speciation of the concept in the norms of geology, which are shaken by the actuality of the Anthropocene. In the end, it appears that this concept is part of the long heritage of the geological statements of modernity, but renews it profoundly. In the process of defining the geological actuality as a pathology, a norm of healthy Earth is drawn that politics must cease and appropriate

The ecological crisis, for which public warnings have been accumulating for more than 50 years, has become the major global problem of the 21st century and a major game changer for all players in the economy. This critique of the "Anthropocene" is leading us to question this linear productivist economic model, with a view to moving it towards greater ecological sustainability or changing it altogether. The delays and shortcomings of the climate roadmap defined by the Paris Agreement in 2015 show that rhetoric is failing to be transformed into new economic practices. This new "Sustainable Economy" will not become a reality, not quickly enough and not on a sufficient scale, without the mobilization of companies and economic players, particularly managers at all levels, whose job it is to turn strategic intentions into practical reality. This objective implies a change of mindset in management in order to assume a new responsible role as "sustainability transformers & makers"

Global changes, whether climatic or anthropogenic, have various consequences in human and animal health, as well as for worldwide ecosystems. One of the most important is the modification of geographical ranges of species and those of their associated pathogens. It is in this context that in recent years we have witnessed a resurgence in the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases around the world. While research efforts in this field are mainly focused on viral diseases, freshwater snail-borne diseases, that affect more than 1 billion peoples around the world, are also subject to these outbreaks, which have become frequent. However, the study of the dynamics of parasites associated with these diseases focuses primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of the definitive hosts, particularly humans. Such an approach does not prevent the transmission of these parasites to humans and even less prevent an emergence event, and the existing tools used to monitor these parasites in the environment are difficult to apply at large scale. This thesis work, therefore aims to provide a more environmental vision of the dynamics of these diseases. With the example of the emergence of urogenital bilharziasis in Corsica, we analysed this emergence by integrating the study of the life history traits of the tropical parasite in question, particularly its thermo tolerance, as well as the role of mollusc intermediate hosts and wild and domestic definitive hosts in the local maintenance of the parasite lifecycle. In a second step, we have developed environmental DNA diagnostic tools for the detection of molluscs hosts in the environment in order to identify areas at risk of emergence, as well as tools for intramolluscal detection of schistosomes to identify active sites of transmission, and thus allow the environmental monitoring of the actors of these diseases. To complete these approaches, we have developed a more generalised environmental metabarcoding tool to characterise freshwater mollusc communities and initiated the development of a similar tool for the characterisation of trematode communities, in order to study the interactions between these organisms. Lastly, we discuss the integration of all these elements into new control strategies against snail-borne diseases

This research explores the interrelations between war and the destruction of the environment through the entanglements of the soviet policy of chemical struggle against agricultural pest and the preparation for war. The first chapter is organized around the institutionalization of applied entomology and the telescoping of war and « natural disasters » until the early 1920s. The second chapter focuses on the collaborations between military, industrial chemists and entomologists for the transfer of technologies to agriculture and the policy of the establishment of the double standard policy of the German war economy. The introduction of war gas and plane dusting in agriculture is supported by the military sector organizing the promotion of a new « aerochimical » weapon. The third chapter focuses on the regions of the South East in the 1920s where intertwined human and nonhuman risks cross-fertilized and where warlike modes of struggle against pest are forged. The fourth chapter relates to the creation of a hyper centralized and planned system of struggle against pest stimulated by the mass proliferations of the Great Turn and to the promotion of “brute force technologies” for pest control during the first Five Year Plan. The fifth chapter focuses on the interdependencies of the internal colonization of the USSR, the struggle against pest and dekulakization during the crisis of the collectivization, the famine and preparation for war. In 1933, the intertwined destruction of life reaches an apogee. New organizational practices emerge during this period for the whole decade
