Certos antílopes norte-africanos foram chamados oryx por autores gregos e romanos. Os autores árabes conheciam-nos como Lamt (ou lamta, elamt, lant, dant) e usavam sua pele na confecção de escudos (daraqqa-lamṭiyya). Com a invasão muçulmana da Península Ibérica, daraqqa-lamṭiyya tranformou-se em adarga-danta e sob esta forma foi citada por numerosos autores espanhóis e portugueses. Consequentemente, os Oryx africanos foram chamados anta por Gomes Eanes de Zurara (1453) e danta por um autor anônimo (MS Valentim Fernandes, 1507) e Duarte Lopes (in Pigafetta & Lopes, 1589). Antonio Pigafetta (in Anôn., ca. 1526) referiu-se, sob o nome anta, ao estranho animal que os índios de língua Tupi do Brasil denominavam tapir. Tapir e anta (com muitas variantes e com a adição de vários qualificativos) foram usados por autores subsequentes. Finalmente, no Brasil, o uso impróprio de anta para designar as espécies de Tapirus suplantou a de tapir. Uma confusão adicional foi acrescentada por alguns autores, que confundiram as antas sul-americanas com o alce do Velho Mundo, chamando as primeiras de grã-bestas (e variantes).

Abstract:
Additives with bioactive properties can improve chickens’ gut health. This study investigated the physiological status of the gut, including its morphological structure and microbiome activities in chickens fed diets supplemented with phytogenic ingredients with hops (Anta®Phyt) or a mixture of a free butyrate acidifier and gluconic acid (PreAcid). In this study, 1155 broilers were distributed to three dietary treatments with 5 replicate pens per treatment, 77 birds each. Anta®Phyt was added at 400/300/200/200 mg/kg diet whereas PreAcid was added at 3/2/1/1 g/kg starter/grower I/grower II/finisher diet respectively. Dietary treatments did not compromise body weight in different growth periods. In the birds fed PreAcid-supplemented diet, higher gut concentration of butyric acid was observed, particularly in the early stage of growth, while the profile of the short-chain fatty acids was maintained among the treatments. Neither additive significantly affected cecal bacterial enzyme activities. Feeding the birds with Anta®Phyt and PreAcid had beneficial effects on gut morphostructure indices, including intestinal wall thickness, crypt depth and the villus height to crypt depth ratio, in 35- and 42-day old birds. In conclusion, the feeding Anta®Phyt- or PreAcid-supplemented diet exerted beneficial effects on the indices determining the physiological status of the gut and maintained good performance of birds of different ages.

Abstract:
Uppsatsen har en kvalitativ ansats genom en flerfallstudie där tolv personer intervjuades.Syftet med studien är att genom semistrukturerade intervjuer förstå tävlingsformen Toughest ur deltagarnas perspektiv. Respondenternas svar har transkriberats och därefter analyserats för att i slutet presenteras i en så kallad korsanalys för att komma fram till ett resultat.Resultatet visar att deltagarna i vår studie både har liknande och olika perspektiv påToughest. Resultatet visar även att det finns ett samband mellan idrottslig bakgrund ochdeltagare i Toughest, då majoriteten i vårt urval har organiserad idrottslig bakgrund. Baserat på intervjuerna har alla deltagare en gemensam tanke där de förklarar Toughest som ett idrottsevenemang som är en utmaning för dem. Dessutom visar resultaten att en del av deltagarna vill delta i Toughest eftersom det är roligt och socialt, var på några av deltagarna har stor passion för hinderbanelopp och ser Toughest som motivation för sin dagliga träning.Slutsatsen med denna uppsats är enligt oss att Toughest är ett unikt event som lockarmänniskor på olika sätt. Deltagarna har olika perspektiv på hur de ser Toughest och derasmotivationsfaktorer skiljer sig åt. Utifrån intervjuerna har vi tolkat att Toughest är en aktivitet som deltagarna i vår studie uttrycker erbjuder det lilla extra och är utöver det vanliga.
The aim of this study is to understand the sport event Toughest through the participants'perspective. To collect relevant empirical we conducted semistructured interviews withtwelve people who had participated and completed the obstacle course race, Toughest.We choose to implement the study on a physical activity-background perspective as wewanted to see if there is a relationship between physical activity background and toparticipate in Toughest.The interviews were performed by both of us and notes were taken. The study includes 12semi structured interviews which were performed at different times. During weekdays andweekends, during the day and evening.The result shows that the participants in our study have both similar and differentperspectives on Toughest. Based on the interviews all the participants has a common thought where they explain Toughest as a sport event that is a challenge for them. Furthermore the results shows that some of the participant want to partake in Toughest because it is fun and social, where as some of the participants have a great passion for obstacle course races and sees Toughest as a motivation for their daily training.

Der eine stützte sich auf das antike Griechenland und der andere auf das antike Ägypten, beide forderten damit die Wissenschaftlergemeinschaft ihrer Zeit heraus und erschütterten die Wissensordnung ihrer Zeit. Absichtlich provokativ haben sie auf eine unsichere Zukunft gesetzt. Beide haben sie Grenzen des Wissens und Grenzen der Politik überschritten. Im folgenden sollen die Ähnlichkeiten der unzeitgemäßen Denkformen beider Denker im Vordergrund stehen. Für Cheikh Anta Diop und Nietzsche steht fest, dass wir unserer Existenz durch den historischen Sinn einen Wert geben. Der eine lädt uns ein, in der Erforschung der pharaonischen Ursprünge die Zielrichtung einer Konstruktion der afrikanischen Zukunft zu finden, was der Haltung von Nietzsche ähnelt, der das dekadente Europa seiner Zeit dazu aufrief, sich aus der griechischen Seele als seinem eigentlichen Sein zu erneuern. Abstract:
The objective of the investigation is an analysis of the national identity of two of the most important modernists` groups of Brazil: verdeamarelo/Anta and Antropofagia. They were predominantly active within the period of 1926 and 1929. In view of these groups influence on the historical and cultural memory of the country, a review of the canonical critics and historiography about these groups was undertaken by means of a comparative analysis. Verdeamarelo/Tapir and Antropofagia formulated concepts about aestetics, nation and national identity which have been researched. Mutual aspects as well as differences were found and discussed. Furthermore, texts have been analyzed which were produced by the participants of the two modernists groups and by other intellectuals who had leaned on the ideas of Verdeamarelo/Tapir and Antropofagia. Based on that, the pedagogical character of the modernist speech in the narratives of verdeamarelo/Tapir and Antropofagia was verified. Both groups worked on a definition of the people and their historical transformation depending on time and location. Their approach was focused on avoiding regional fragments and times being projected in different dimensions. Based on the fundamental elements of people, location and time, the modernists narratives defined what nationality means in terms of art and literature and, in the last instance, what it means to be Brazilian.
O presente estudo tem como objeto de análise a construção da identidade nacional tal como foi proposta por dois dos mais destacados grupos modernistas do Brasil o Verdeamarelo/Anta e a Antropofagia , cujo período de atuação se deu entre 1926 e 1929. Tendo em vista a importância da presença desses grupos na memória histórico-cultural do país, empreendeu-se, por meio de um viés comparativista, uma revisão da crítica e da historiografia canônicas existentes sobre os referidos grupos. A partir da concepção estética, de nação e de identidade nacional formulada por ambos, buscou-se refletir sobre os pontos comuns e as divergências entre o Verdeamarelo/Anta e a Antropofagia. Para isto, foram analisados textos produzidos pelos próprios integrantes dos dois grupos modernistas e por outros intelectuais que se debruçaram sobre o ideário dos verdeamarelos e dos antropófagos, posteriormente. Assim, verificou-se o caráter pedagógico do discurso modernista presente nas narrativas verdeamarelas e antropofágicas, as quais buscaram definir as linhas constitutivas dos sujeitos nacionais e o percurso histórico desses sujeitos no espaço-tempo da nação. Espaço pensado de modo a evitar as fragmentações regionalistas e tempo projetado em suas várias dimensões. Assentadas nesses elementos basilares, as narrativas modernistas aqui focalizadas se pautaram pela afirmação do que é nacional em termos de arte e literatura e, em última instância, do que é ser brasileiro.

Abstract:
Este estudo teve como objetivo geral analisar remanescentes de Floresta com Araucária, com base em métricas de paisagem e nos requisitos ecológicos de Tapirus terrestris (anta) e de Tayassu pecari (queixada). Para tanto, a pesquisa foi conduzida na paisagem em meso-escala (Fazenda Lageado Grande - FLG, onde os animais possuem áreas de uso fixo) e na paisagem em macro-escala (áreas limítrofes à FLG, de uso esporádico dos animais). Na paisagem de meso-escala os objetivos específicos foram: avaliar o uso de habitat pelas espécies considerando áreas conservadas e áreas antropizadas; relacionar a composição e disposição das unidades paisagísticas que compõem a paisagem com a freqüência de uso e seletividade de habitats pelos animais; testar a utilidade do método de parcelas amostrais para a obtenção de dados referentes ao uso e seletividade de habitats pelas espécies; e analisar a estrutura espacial da paisagem mediante a utilização de métricas. Na paisagem em macro-escala os objetivos específicos foram: verificar a adequação de habitats para as espécies; conhecer o tamanho de área de uso, abundância relativa, capacidade de movimentação e distribuição espacial das espécies na região estudada; analisar a estrutura espacial das áreas, sobretudo das manchas dos habitats-chaves, mediante a utilização de métricas da paisagem; e por fim, avaliar o conjunto de informações disponíveis a respeito dos ambientes, identificando pontos favoráveis à sua conservação e as ameaças a que estão submetidas, como parte do planejamento estratégico de conservação dos ungulados em ambiente natural. Os métodos de amostragem utilizados consistiram na elaboração do mapa de uso e cobertura do solo, por meio de fotointerpretação, onde seis classes de habitat foram identificadas: várzeas (VAZ), vegetação ciliar do Rio Iratim (APP), floresta com predomínio de pinheiro (FPP), floresta com predomínio de folhosas (FPF), reflorestamento com pinus (REF) e área antrópica (AIA). Esses habitats foram amostrados in loco para verificar a freqüência de uso e seletividade de habitats pelas espécies, sendo a quantidade de parcelas de 1 ha a serem amostradas em cada habitat determinada mediante o “Cálculo do Tamanho de uma Amostra Aleatória Simples”. A intensidade de uso dos habitats foi medida pela “Freqüência de Ocorrência de Localizações”; e a seleção de habitats avaliada mediante o uso do “Índice de Seletividade de Ivlev”. A análise da estrutura da paisagem foi realizada mediante a utilização do software Fragstats 3.3, métricas de área, forma, área central, contágio e agregação. No Arc Map 9.2 foi calculada a proporção de áreas de conexão na paisagem. Inferências sobre a percepção da paisagem das espécies foram baseadas no Limiar de Fragmentação de Andrén e no Limiar da Percolação de Stauffer. Foram utilizados índices para estimar a abundância relativa das espécies, como a contagem de indícios (no caso da anta) e número de visualizações (no caso do queixada). Os resultados obtidos pelo “Índice de Seletividade” indicaram que a anta seleciona os ambientes de VAZ em proporções equivalentes a 14 vezes mais que sua disponibilidade na área (IS 0,8698). Da mesma forma, o queixada seleciona estes ambientes 10 vezes mais que sua respectiva disponibilidade (IS 0,8108). O segundo habitat mais selecionado por estes ungulados foi APP: anta utiliza esse habitat três vezes mais que sua disponibilidade (IS 0,5434), e o queixada cinco vezes mais que sua disponibilidade na área (IS 0,6367). Com base nesses valores pode-se afirmar que as várzeas e a vegetação ciliar, embora sejam os habitats menos disponíveis na paisagem, são habitatschave para a sobrevivência das espécies na região estudada. A característica da matriz (predominantemente florestal com espécies nativas), associada aos limiares de percolação e à proporção de elementos de conexão existentes, favorece o deslocamento dos animais até as manchas de seus habitats-chaves. Tanto a anta quanto o queixada utilizam rotas de deslocamento estáveis para trânsito entre a FLG e as áreas do entorno. A anta possui sua área de vida restrita as FLG, Santa Gema Geyer, Lageado Grande/ Remasa e Santa Cruz (4.314 ha); e sua densidade relativa na região estudada pode ser considerada bastante baixa (média de apenas quatro indivíduos). O queixada possui área de vida maior que a anta (Grupo 1 = 12.457 ha, e o Grupo 2 = 7.397 ha), porém a sua densidade relativa também pode ser considerada baixa (Grupo 1 = média de 56 indivíduos; Grupo 2 = média de 63 indivíduos). A caça é a principal causa do declínio populacional das espécies na região estudada, e a falta de fiscalização e coibição da caça, bem como de educação ambiental são fatores que potencializam ainda mais as ameaças sobre as espécies.

Problem statement: What are the mismatches between ANTA Company’s wanted brand image and the perceived brand image by the target consumer group?

Purpose: The aim of this study is to find out the mismatches between ANTA Company’s wanted brand image and consumer’s perception about ANTA’s brand image in China’s sportswear market in order to suggest how ANTN Company should deal with those mismatches.

Methodology: The method of this case study is mainly based on the primary and secondary information. The primary information mainly comes from the interview with the manager and questionnaires from the respondents. The books, articles and internet are used as the secondary information.

Conceptual Framework: The theoretical framework includes three aspects which consist of marketing mix, brand image and attitude.

Conclusion: The conclusion arises from the analysis and research based on the methods, theoretical framework, finding. And there are 5 mismatches which ANTA Company need to deal with. In order to deal with the mismatches, it is very necessary for ANTA to adjust the current marketing strategy and analyze systematically the mismatches for improving the brand image.

With the accelerated occupation of the space, the use of tunnels play an important role in engineering, in this sense, the deformations control during it s construction process is very important for the best performance of tunnels. In this sense the numerical analyzes represent a likely economy in the design process. This paper uses a theory of elasticity in the FlexPDE, the same allows the solution of a system of partial differential equations using the finite elements method and producing a graphical output of the problem. In this sense simulations were performed using three-dimensional numerical deep tunnel under the elastic rock in a physical environment continuously, equivalent to the rock mass. Analyzes were made of three-dimensional numerical condition and constructive process of a circular tunnel deep in the rock. These results were compared with the elastic solution of Kirsch for a cross section corresponding to the plane strain state, showing good concordance of numerical results with the analytical. After the verification stage of the numeric model has also been given to the numerical simulation 3D and analyses based on monitoring data from the tunnel auxiliary of the Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) of Simplicio/Anta, located in Paraiba do Sul River, in the state of Rio de January - RJ. In this work were carried out measurements of convergence in various sections of the tunnel at the same time of excavation progress. These results and the parameters of characterisation, strength and deformation were colected from Vissoto Junior (2009). Finally the results of the analyzes numerical 3D were compared with the results of field, and after the adjustment of geotechnical parameters in back analyses was obtained a good concordance of numerical results with field data. In this case studied the excavation of the tunnel had a linear elastic behavior since the rock mass is of good quality and the tunnel relatively small.
Com a ocupação acelerada dos espaços superficiais, a utilização de túneis passa a desempenhar um papel importante na engenharia, neste sentido o controle de suas deformações durante o processo construtivo dos mesmos, é de vital importância para o melhor desempenho de túneis. Nesse sentido as análises numéricas representam uma provável economia na fase de projeto. Este trabalho utiliza-se a teoria da elasticidade no programa FlexPDE, o mesmo permite a solução de um sistema de equações diferenciais parciais utilizando o método de elementos finitos e produzindo uma saída gráfica do problema. Neste sentido foram realizadas simulações numéricas tridimensionais de escavação de túneis profundos em regime elástico em maciços rochosos num meio físico contínuo, equivalente ao maciço fraturado. Foram feitas análises numéricas tridimensionais da condição e processo construtivo de um túnel circular profundo escavado em rocha. Estes resultados foram comparados com a solução elástica de Kirsch para uma seção transversal correspondente ao estado de deformação plana, observando-se boa concordância dos resultados numéricos com os analíticos. Após a etapa de verificação do modelo numérico deu-se também a simulação numérica 3D e retroanálise com base em dados de monitoramento do túnel auxiliar de jusante da Usina Hidroelétrica (UHE) de Simplício/Anta, localizada no Rio Paraíba do Sul, município do Rio de Janeiro RJ. Nesta obra foram realizadas medições da convergência em diversas seções do túnel ao mesmo tempo em que ocorria o avanço da frente de escavação. Estes resultados e os parâmetros de caracterização, resistência e deformação foram retirados do trabalho de Vissoto Junior (2009). Finalmente os resultados obtidos das análises numéricas 3D foram comparados com os resultados de campo, e após o ajuste dos parâmetros geotécnicos realizados na retroanálise foi obtida uma boa concordância dos resultados numéricos com os dados de campo. Neste caso estudado a escavação do túnel teve um comportamento elástico linear já que o maciço rochoso é de boa qualidade e o túnel relativamente pequeno.

Diop has foretold in his book "les fondements economiques et culturels d'un etat federal d'afrique noire", the africans must realise that their future relies upon not the secessionism but on the creation of a greater geopolitical unity. To share ch. A. Diop's project of a negro-african federal state, we must reexamine his cultural theses, such as the black origin of ancient egypt and the cultural unity of black africa. Este trabalho trata da Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, mais concretamente, pretende avançar com hipóteses que se constituam como contributos para o necessário e desejável projecto de restauro e valorização desse monumento. Trata-se de um dos mais notáveis, senão mesmo o mais notável, monumento megalítico, deste género, existente a nível mundial. No primeiro capítulo, será abordado, ainda que de forma breve, o enquadramento histórico relativo à evolução do megalitismo funerário regional. Efectivamente, as antas alentejanas, por serem monumentos extremamente marcantes na paisagem, têm, desde o século XVIII pelo menos, estimulado a atenção dos investigadores. Serão também abordados os conceitos que, actualmente, norteiam as investigações relativas ao fenómeno megalítico, de modo a estabelecer o necessário enquadramento científico que permitirá iniciar o estudo específico do monumento. O segundo capítulo irá debruçar-se exclusivamente sobre a Anta Grande do Zambujeiro e a sua envolvente. Nele, será feita referência ao historial do monumento e procurarei, igualmente, realizar uma breve descrição da sua envolvente paisagística utilizando variadas perspectivas, nomeadamente a Geologia, a Orohidrografia e a Pedologia. O terceiro aspecto a tratar na dissertação será a realização de uma avaliação sumária da intervenção realizada em AIcalar 7. Mais concretamente, pretende-se comentar a filosofia e os métodos de restauro, aplicados nesse monumento, de modo a colocar essa experiência ao serviço de um programa de fundo centrado na Anta Grande do Zambujeiro. O quarto ângulo de abordagem, este sim, determinante para os objectivos em vista, centrar-se-á na análise detalhada do estudo (e das propostas de intervenção) produzido pelo LNEC sobre a Anta Grande do Zambujeiro. – ABSTRACT: This study focuses its attention in the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro (Big Dolmen of Zambujeiro). Particularly, intends to bring forward some hypothesis to contribute for the project of restoration of the monument. This is one of the most remarkable, if not the most remarkable, megalithic monument of its kind, in the world. ln the first chapter, I will address, even though briefly, the historical background of the evolution of regional megaliths. Indeed, the Alentejo dolmens, being conspicuous monuments in the landscape, have since the eighteenth century, at least, has captured the attention of researchers. The second chapter focuses exclusively on Anta Grande do Zambujeiro and its surroundings. The third aspect, to be approached in the dissertation, is to carry out a brief assessment of the intervention in Alcalar 7. The purpose is put that knowledge to the service of Anta Grande do Zambujeiro. The fourth angle of approach, crucial for the intended objective, is the analysis of the study, produced by LNEC, about Anta Grande do Zambujeiro. Finally, some proposals will be presented for the intervention at the monument. Those proposals will have, as starting points, the report made by LNEC and the experience of Alcalar 7, directed by Elena Morán and Rui Parreira, one of the first to attempt a consequent intervention in Anta Grande do Zambujeiro.

A questão da salvaguarda de monumentos é particularmente pertinente na sociedade contemporânea, num contexto de crescente reconhecimento da importância que a noção de património tem adquirido. Importância, de resto, que se tem vindo a colocar, de uma maneira genérica, já desde que William Morris, na Inglaterra do Séc. XIX, se manifestou pela defesa das questões culturais, e desde o início do séc. XX, nomeadamente a partir de 1931, ano em que se redigiu a Carta de Atenas, desencadeando o compromisso de diversos países na salvaguarda do património. Ainda que de formas diferentes das que se apresentam hoje, as origens da atenção a estes temas é relevante. Numa perspectiva mais actual, a noção de património é bastante mais abrangente, incluindo manifestações da ordem do imaterial. Esta é uma natureza múltipla, também inerente ao objecto de estudo. A investigação parte e inclui, o reconhecimento dessa vertente de património, os valores in loco que estão associados ao sítio da AGZ, que não se materializam, mas merecem o mesma atenção que os edificados. Na perspectiva deste trabalho pretende-se compreender de que forma esta questão, da preservação e valorização, se pode reflectir e plasmar no caso concreto do território onde se insere uma estrutura megalítica, a Anta Grande do Zambujeiro. A análise de intervenções com o objectivo de preservar estruturas equivalentes, no fundo, um "estado da arte", proporciona uma forma de abordagem deste tema. Possibilita, ainda, uma posição crítica que contribuirá para a produção de ensaios projectuais que permitam explorar o tema da preservação e interpretação de estruturas megalíticas. Sobretudo, na região de Évora, que se tem revelado, nas últimas décadas, uma das áreas de maior densidade de vestígios. Este trabalho de investigação pretende propor, particularmente, o ensaio de soluções e meios que promovam, não só a salvaguarda de um património milenar, mas também a difusão do conhecimento que lhe está associado e uma interpretação contemporânea daquilo que terá representado ao longo dos diversos tempos. Abstract: The issue of safeguarding monuments is especially relevant to contemporary society, in the context of an increasing recognition of the importance of the concept of heritage. Furthermore, importance has been given, in a generic manner, since William Morris in England in the 19th century, to an overt defense of cultural matters, and since the beginning of the 20th century, specifically from 1931, the year in which the Chart of Athens was written, prompting the commitment made by various countries to safeguard their heritage. Despite the diverse forms that are evident today, the original purpose remains relevant. This work is intended to address the nature of this topic, of preservation and appreciation, to reflect upon and give shape to the concrete examples of a site where a megalithic structure is located, the Anta Grande Zambujeiro (the Grand Dolmen of Zambujeiro). These structures are a heritage that should be safeguarded and, at the same time, made known, the relevance of this work being to ascertain by what means. An analysis of interventions made in order to preserve comparable structures, fundamentally, the "state of the art", provides a way of approaching this theme. It even enables a critical position which can contribute, in a determinant manner, towards the production of projective trials to explore the theme of the preservation and interpretation of megalithic structures. Overall, the region of Évora has been revealed, in the last few decades, to be a fertile territory in terms of archaeological activity to do with the megalithic period, and particularly, as the territory where the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro is located. This research project is intended to propose, in particular, a trial of solutions and means to promote, not only the safeguarding of a significant heritage site, but also the diffusion of the knowledge associated with it, through a contemporary interpretation of what has been presented at various times. It is important to mention that this project is part of a current research at the Linha de Arquitectura (Line of Architecture) at CHAIA (the Art History and Artistic Research Centre), seeking to make a contribution, and simultaneously, make use of some of its resources.

ABSTRACT Background: Byssinosis, a cotton lung disease, is work-related respiratory symptoms found mainly in workers at textile industries. Byssinosis remains one of the health problems in developing countries related to cotton dust from industrial textile production processes. This study aimed to determine the risk factors of byssinosis symptoms among sewing unit workers at PT. X, Semarang. Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from February to Aug­ust 2020 at sewing unit PT. X, Semarang, Central Java. A total of 205 sewing unit work­ers was selected for this study. The dependent variable was symptoms of byssinosis. The independent variables were age, working time, wearing a face mask, and knowledge of the workers. The study subjects were selected by simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by questionnaires, observations, and reports. Bivariate analysis was carried out by using the chi-square method. Results: Byssinosis symptoms increased with age (OR= 1.55; CI= 0.85 to 2.83; p= 0.195), working time (OR= 6.02; 95% CI= 3.28 to 11.05; p= 0.001), without wearing face mask (OR= 9.14; 95% CI= 4.81 to 17.39; p= 0.001), and good knowledge of workers (OR= 0.87; 95% CI= 0.50 to 1.51; p= 0.728). Conclusion: Age, working time, and without wearing face mask are risk factors, while good knowledge of workers is a protective factor of byssinosis. It is recommended that the personal protective equipment be adequately supplied and regulations strictly enforced for its use within the work environment. Abstract:
Ant foraging behavior has inspired research in a number of areas including distributed problem solving such as optimization and task allocation and mobile robot navigation. In the area of swarm robotic systems, ant foraging behavior has been largely modeled via behavior based techniques and analyzed using cellular automata. Development of continuous time models for ant foraging can potentially provide insights into new mechanisms and behaviors used by ants that provide self-organizing capabilities to the ant colony. This paper presents a distributed control law in continuous time that combines gradient following for pheromone concentration as well as food scent with random motion seen in ants. The paper also provides a continuous time model for pheromone laying in a 2D environment and carries out a preliminary numerical stability analysis of the solutions. Extensive simulation studies confirm emergent behaviors seen in ant systems such as trail formation and convergence to single food site. In addition, the paper examines the effect of randomness on robustness of convergence to a single food site.
