Abstract:
This article concerns the diagnostic campaign aimed at analyzing the mural painting representing the iconographic theme of the Deesis of the Church of St. Maria Annunziata, Motta San Giovanni, in the province of Reggio Calabria. In 1951, a flood caused the collapse of the building and the consequent breaking of the apse into two parts. The present study focused on the left side of the apse, hosting the figures of Christ and Mary, in order to plan the best conservation intervention strategy. For this purpose, non-invasive investigations and laboratory analytical methods were conducted in order to characterize the constituent materials and to identify the forms of alteration and degradation present on the surface of the painting. In particular, Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled to the chemical analysis by an EDS probe, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and ion chromatography were employed. The results highlighted the presence of a single layer of plaster made with a lime-based binder. The chromatic palette of the painting is characterized by ochres and carbon black mixed with lime to obtain the different shades. Finally, the definition of the nature of the deposits and of the overlaid materials was fundamental in order to identify the best products and methods to restore the readability of the work.

Abstract:
AbstractInsects found in archeological contexts provide useful information for reconstructing past events. In the context of funerary archeology, insects may help in reconstructing funerary practices or rituals, and in the understanding of the taphonomic processes. Furthermore, studying these insects is fundamental for developing effective conservation strategies for cultural heritage. This article focuses on the entomological investigation of four mummies (nineteenth century) discovered in the church of Santa Maria Annunziata (Cerreto di Spoleto, Central Italy). The research aimed to verify and eventually support archeological hypotheses about the four bodies and to plan an effective conservation strategy. The predominant findings were Diptera puparia and adult Coleoptera. Alongside, common species typical of the hypogean burial, such as Hydrotaea capensis and several mycetophilous (mold feeder) species were also collected. The presence of blowfly remains (Calliphoridae) would suggest that the bodies were exposed before burial.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper presents damage assessment through Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) and Finite Element (FE) model updating of the bell tower of the church of Castro in Bergamo, Italy. The tower is a 39 m high reinforced concrete structure with hollow cross-section and double-curved shape. The research was dictated by the need to identify the actual damage state of the structure, which was found through visual inspections. Piezoelectric accelerometers were used to record the ambient vibrations in subsequent test setups, using the roving technique for system identification. A detailed FE model was created with shell elements and calibrated to match the system identification results. A simplified beam model was then developed based on the modal analysis results of the detailed model. A sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the most influential model parameters on the modal characteristics of the system. Subsequently, the optimal values of these parameters were determined by an optimisation procedure carried out using a typical global optimization algorithm. The updating results allowed assessment of the actual condition of the bell tower and its seismic vulnerability. Finally, a seismic strengthening solution was recommended.
