Abstract:
Seeds of `Dawn Carpet' and `Little Bright Eye' annual vinca [Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don] were subjected to 32 treatments, arranged as a four × four × two factorial. For each cultivar, seeds were exposed to one of four temperatures (15, 20, 25, or 30C) during the 8-hour (day) and 16-hour (night) portions of the cycle. Within each temperature regime, half the seeds of each cultivar were irradiated for 1 hour daily, and the other half remained in constant darkness. Final germination percentages were suppressed at 15C day or night temperatures; at temperatures ≥20C, there were no significant differences between treatments. Heat input (daily degree hours) was a controlling factor in germination; different temperature cycles with equivalent numbers of daily degree hours had similar effects on germination response. There was a strong interaction between temperature and irradiation regime for both cultivars. Irradiating seeds for 1 hour/day reduced final germination percentages under cool (15C) conditions; response was not adversely affected when seeds at 15C were germinated in darkness. In a second experiment, seeds at 25C were exposed to daily photoperiods of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, or 24 hours. Germination percentages obtained in darkness and at photoperiods ≤12 hours were equivalent. Twenty-four-hour photoperiods suppressed germination compared to all other irradiation treatments.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the capacity of annual hours (AH) to deliver gains to both workers and management and assesses the role of workplace partnership in three Irish companies that have adopted AH. Design/methodology/approach – Three case studies are compared and contrasted. The case studies were compiled through semi-structured interviews with management and trade union representatives, a survey of 205 workers and secondary material. Findings – The authors find that workplace partnership is not a prerequisite for achieving mutual gains where AH are concerned. The research draws attention to the importance of a mechanism for the creation of gains, in these cases, AH and that such gains can arise from different processes. Mutual gains output is not confined to workplace partnership but can arise from collective bargaining. Originality/value – The paper highlights the importance of comparing case studies so that the role of factors often seen as causal to mutual gains in exemplar cases can be critically evaluated. It also utilises directly workers’ opinions on AH and workplace partnership where typically, representative views of management and trade unions dominate the literature on these issues.

Abstract:
Cities around the United States are investing in bicycle infrastructure, and to secure additional transportation funding, cities are reporting bicycle use and safety improvements. Data on bicyclist traffic volume is necessary for performing safety studies and reporting facility use. Meeting the need for data, available manual bicycle counting programs count cyclists for a few hours per year at designated locations. A key issue in the design of counting programs is determining the timing and frequency of counts needed to obtain a reliable estimate of annual average daily bicyclists (AADB). In particular, in which days of the week, hours of the day, and months of the year should counts be collected? And, most important to program cost, how many hours should be counted? This study used continuous bicycle counts from Boulder, Colorado, to estimate AADB and analyze the estimation errors that would be expected from various bicycle-counting scenarios. AADB average estimation errors were found to range from 15% with 4 weeks of continuous count data to 54% when only 1 h of data was collected per year. The study found that the most cost-effective length for short-term bicycle counts is one full week when automated counting devices specifically calibrated for bicycle counting are used. Seasons with higher bicycle volumes have less variation in bicycle counts and thus more accurate estimates.

Abstract:
The competition in the manufacturing industry has never been higher. Owing to the technological changes and advancements in the market, readily available data is no longer a thing of the past. Numerous studies have discussed the impact of industry 4.0, digital transformation as well as better production planning methods in the manufacturing industry.  The Mass-Manufacturing industry, in specific, has gained efficiency levels in production that were previously unimaginable. Industry 4.0 has been discussed as the ‘next big thing’ in the manufacturing context. In fact, it is seen as a necessity for manufacturing companies to stay competitive. However, efficient production planning methodologies are a preliminary requirement in order to successfully adopt the new manufacturing paradigms. The Engineering-to-order (ETO) industry is still widely unexplored by the academia ETO industries, barely have any production planning methodologies to rely on owing to their complex production processes and high reliance on manual-labour. Regression techniques have repeatedly been used in the production planning context. Considering its statistical prowess, it is no surprise that even the newer machine-learning techniques are based on regression. Considering its success in the mass-manufacturing industry for production planning, is it possible that its usage in the ETO industry might lead to the same results? This thesis involves a case study that was performed at an electrical transformer manufacturing plant in Sweden. After understanding the several operations that are performed in the production process, regression techniques are employed to estimate man-hours. The results from the study reconfirm the statistical prowess of regression and show the possibility of using regression in order to estimate man-hours in the ETO industry. In addition, several factors that can affect successful adoption of this tool in the production planning context are discussed. It is hoped that this study will lay the foundation for better production planning methodologies for the ETO industries in the future which might subsequently result in more data-driven decision making rather than instincts.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate how managers, resource planners and employees, in a bigger swedish public authority, perceive changes in leadership, and advantages and disadvantages with the work process, after a workplace-oriented intervention to increase participation in planning of working hours. Mehods: Three managers and three resource planners were selected through a targeted selection and six employees were selected through a random sampling. A qualitative method with semi structured interviews were used to collect data, and a phenomenographical method was used to analyze the interviews. Main results: The analyzed data resulted in the following descriptive categories; unchanged leadership, strengthened leadership, greater understanding at the work place, more dialogue between different work roles, better work-life balance, higher actual and perceived opportunity to influence and more work for the resource planners. Conclusion: Employee participation in schedule planning can be positive from an occupational health science perspective. Workplaces with scheduled work can therefore advantageously let employees participate in schedule planning.

Abstract:
Global climate change is already having a noticeable impact on the environment that threatens the future of all species including humans. Unfortunately, it is currently accelerating and global temperatures will continue to rise in the coming decades mainly due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities in daily life. One of the biggest contributors is emissions from the transport sector which accounts for 32% of Swedish total CO2 emissions. Within the transport sector, freight transportation is more disruptive to traffic flow than personal vehicles because they take up more space on the road and their speed cannot be controlled as nimble as personal vehicles which causes congestion, waste of fuel and greater emissions. Based on the forecast that freight transportation will grow at a faster rate in the next few years, there is a need to manage them more intelligently while keeping up the demand for daily transport. The concept of OHD with the purpose of traffic distribution has recently been proposed and discussed in some academic and pilot projects. By shifting freight transportation from peak hours to off-peak hours, traffic can be alleviated, thus reducing emission from fuel consumption and reducing the timethey and that parts of traffic operate during the day spent on the road. This thesis presents a more comprehensive assessment of the impact of sustainability on theconcept from multiple perspectives and applies the results to the external logistics of Swedish recycling companies. An empirical study was conducted through fourteen semi-structured interviews with researchers, experts within relevant fields and companies with OHD experience. The combination of the empirical and theoretical study concludes that the opportunities and challenges coexist when the industrial companies implement OHD. The most noticeable opportunity provided by the transition is to get rid of congestion which leads to efficiency improvements, fuel savings and reductions in emissions. However, the concept also has a damaging impact as it exposes residents in the surrounding to noise pollution at the time when they need quiet rest. In addition, another challenge in implementing OHD is getting customers’ cooperation which involves the issue of access.

Abstract:
Project control is essential to ensure that the investment on a project is providing the intended benefits and is valuable to the customers. Previous methods offer project performance monitoring and forecasting tools, but they lack accuracy and the associated techniques omit the project financial risk (any unplanned event that has an impact on schedule and budget); the main factor of project failure. Poor project execution, and particularly failure to control and accurately forecast the project performance, may lead to increased costs, upset customers and eventually loss of market share. These gaps have been filled in this study by the development of novel models that use statistical analysis of the previous project performance, including risk evaluation techniques. The proposed models succeeded in providing remarkably improved forecasts in three project dimensions: duration, cost and resources. The robustness of the models has been verified by testing them on real projects. The results show superiority in terms of accuracy and easy application compared to any existing method, proving that the risk inclusion provides improvement compared to previous studies. The most important features of the models are: risk-based adjustment of the forecasted values, periodic and completion forecasts, statistical processing and holistic approach. The greatest advancements have been made in the cost forecast, for which the risk adjustment inclusion is examined for the first time. The resources (man-hours) forecast is another pioneer element of the proposed models. All the above provide a complete image of the project status and paint the picture of future performance. The models results are fed in a Decision Support System, which highlights the overperforming and underperforming areas of the project. This confirms the proposition that the model results can be used to initiate restorative action. The contribution of this study to the project management field is easy-to-use and accurate models, which include the financial risk and facilitate the project manager’s decisions and actions. Anticipation of the project performance, by considering the risk, can result to significant time and cost savings, crucial for project success.

Full text
Abstract:
From the late 1990s, a large part of the non-separated 13-meter-wide roads have been reconstructed into meeting separated roads, where traffic in each direction is separated by a middle strip. Meeting separated roads have been a very successful project for road safety and have contributed to a large reduction in severely injured and casualties in traffic. There are many meeting separated roads in Sweden. In the case of accidents on 2+1-roads, it becomes difficult for the traffic to turn around on the road, which leads to a stop and makes it difficult for the emergency services and tow trucks to reach the scene of the accident. These accidents lead to delay hours and, in turn, to community costs. This thesis is written for the Swedish Transport Administration to review 2+1 roads in the Swedish Transport Administration’s Region East. The report produces and compares the reduction of delay costs after rebuilding a road from 2+1- to 2+2-standard, the report also presents and compares the delay cost with the investment cost for the reconstruction. This study is based on literature studies, analysis of data from the “Traffic Management”, internet-based programs and through the use of Microsoft Excel for calculating delay hours and -costs for selected roads and routes. The result of the report shows whether it is worth investigating in a reconstruction from 2+1- to 2+2-road from delay cost perspective. This is presented through a general comparison per Scandinavian mile of 2+1-road based on roads 50, 55 and 56 in the Swedish Transport Administration’s Region East. The report also contains an analysis of the five most affected accident sites on the E18's 2+1-routes. The analysis of these accident sites showed that all five were between Köping and Västerås in Västmanland county.

Regional analysis is a very important part of the design in hydraulic engineering. Base on measured data from the past, this study can find correlations between the stations. Therefore, regional analysis solve the situation inadequate data, and creates a partition for each of rainfall in Taiwan. This study used two cluster approaches, Cluster analysis and self-organizing map (SOM) with the reference of 127 raingauge data (recorded over 20-years). Hydrological factors presented annual maximum 24-hour rainfall data (mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis), and Physiographical factor displayed station locations and elevation. After this study established each rainfall characteristics partitions, this study detected partition information by L-moment method. The results showed that after adjusting rainfall characteristics data, the two classifications were likely uniformity. Next, this study used the goodness-of-fit measurement to select the best regional probability distributions of rainfall. The Cluster Analysis results show that the best regional probability distribution for 2 normal distribution ,the Gumbel I and the Pearson type III distribution were the best for 1 region. On the other hand, SOM only shows 3 normal distributions and 2 Gumbel I distributions. Finally, this study used SOM results and with Thiessen polygons method dividing Taiwan rainfall characteristics into several partition. In the absence of rainfall frequency analysis information, this storm frequency analysis results will provide a reference for the design of future project planning.

Abstract DATA of Aerosol Robotic Network (Aeronet) stations and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) were obtained to get valuable and reliable information about the occurrence of dust events. In addition to Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) provide informative and long dust events record. To analyze the dust time series, monthly, annual and seasonal linear trends are applied to the dust time series. This is achieved by summing the total number of dusty hours for each month and then the total number of dusty days for the month is calculated. Dust trend analysis includes; annual, winter, spring, summer and autumn with the rate of change. Dust frequency of seasons in days/season before and after sorting in a descending manner from 1984 to 2013. Abstract:
Abstract A vast staff served the asylums: doctors, nurses, attendants, artisans, clergy, kitchen and laundry workers, and other who maintained buildings, farm, gardens and cemetery. Ward work was particularly demanding, with long hours, and poor conditions of employment. A regimented and punitive culture and distrust between management and lower ranks of staff, contributed to “a general feeling of insecurity” among them. They had high rates of sickness and a high turnover, sometimes over 75 per cent annually, resulting in an inexperienced workforce. The asylum leadership contributed to creating a dysfunctional system in which the patients, whom the asylum was meant to serve, were far from central to it.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the background to the Working Time Regulations, the core working time rights and the specifics of the law. It then considers some of the arguments that have been raised both for and against such regulation. The Working Time Regulations regulate daily rest, weekly working time, weekly rest and annual leave, among other matters. The maximum weekly working time is forty-eight hours, but the UK has retained an opt-out to this, so a person can agree to work more hours. The opt-out remains extremely controversial amongst fellow European Member States. The chapter also considers remedies if the rights are breached.

Abstract:
In temporal aspect, the duration of sunshine shows a general upward trend. In seasonal aspect, spring season demonstrates an increase of about +0.2 hours, summer - about 0.1 hours, in autumn there is a trend of decreasing, according to the trend line, and the oscillation is equal to zero hours. Also we observe the increase in the number of hours in the spatial aspect. For Briceni meteorological station, the annual amount of sunshine duration varies within the limits of 1544 hours (1980) and 2326 hours (2015). The oscillation limits at the Cahul meteorological station are 1880 hours (1976) and 2604 hours (1963). At the Chisinau meteorological station, there's general increasing trend for the number of hours during which the sunshine duration is maintained, and it exhibits oscillations within 1783 hours (1989) and 2498 hours (1963). In the spatial aspect for winter, this increase +1 hour in Cahul, +0.38 hours in Briceni, and + 0.4 hours / season in Chisinau. In spring, the highest value of +2.2 hours is observed at Briceni and the lowest in Chisinau +1.9 hours / season. At Cahul meteorological station the increase was +1.4 hours. The increase in summer is +1.7 hours in Briceni and Chisinau, and only +0.9 hours in Cahul. Autumn trend line is a downward trend with a -0.3 hours decrease registered at Briceni and Chisinau meteorological stations (minimum values), and -0.6 hours in Cahul, maximum value.

Full text
Abstract:
This report examines changes in the production and commissioning of Australian television drama from 1999–2019, a period marked by notable changes in the business of television in Australia and globally. More production companies now make drama in Australia; however, the fact that more companies share less than half the annual hours once produced raises concerns about sustainability. Several major Australian production companies have been acquired by foreign conglomerates and challenge the viability of domestic companies that lack access to international corporate capital and distribution. The decrease in adult drama hours commissioned by commercial broadcasters has reshaped Australian television drama more than any other change. The national broadcasters have increased their role in commissioning, particularly in children’s drama. Titles have not decreased nearly as significantly as the number of episodes per series. Commercial broadcasters’ drama decreased from an average of 21 episodes per title in 1999 to seven in 2019, a 60 per cent decrease that, along with the increasing peripheralization of soaps, has diminished available training grounds and career paths in the Australian scripted production industry.

Abstract:
National thermal standards have historically been set to minimise winter heating energy in detached houses. It is uncertain whether these standards are optimal for the increasing number of joined, medium-density dwellings when summer and winter conditions are considered. Using freely available software, annual heating energy use and summertime peak temperatures were calculated for a number of versions of detached and joined dwellings offering the same occupied volume and window areas. Initial results indicated that, as expected, the joined dwellings required less heating energy. The detached house exhibited a higher peak summertime temperature but a lower overall average daily temperature. Interventions such as changing insulation, glazing areas and ventilation were calculated to reduce summertime temperatures in the joined dwelling. Increasing ventilation provided the greatest improvement particularly during the sensitive sleeping hours. Changes to clauses H1 Energy Efficiency, G4 ventilation and G6 Airborne and Impact Sound are recommended if these early findings are confirmed in a more complex simulation.

Sprague, Joshua, David Kushner, James Grunden, Jamie McClain, Benjamin Grime, and Cullen Molitor. Channel Islands National Park Kelp Forest Monitoring Program: Annual report 2014. National Park Service, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2293855.

Full text
Abstract:
Channel Islands National Park (CHIS) has conducted long-term ecological monitoring of the kelp forests around San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands since 1982. The original permanent transects were established at 16 sites between 1981 and 1986 with the first sampling beginning in 1982, this being the 33rd year of monitoring. An additional site, Miracle Mile, was established at San Miguel Island in 2001 by a commercial fisherman with assistance from the park. Miracle Mile was partially monitored from 2002 to 2004, and then fully monitored (using all KFM protocols) since 2005. In 2005, 16 additional permanent sites were established to collect baseline data from inside and adjacent to four marine reserves that were established in 2003. Sampling results from all 33 sites mentioned above are included in this report. Funding for the Kelp Forest Monitoring Program (KFM) in 2014 was provided by the National Park Service (NPS). The 2014 monitoring efforts utilized 49 days of vessel time to conduct 1,040 dives for a total of 1,059 hours of bottom time. Population dynamics of a select list of 71 “indicator species” (consisting of taxa or categories of algae, fish, and invertebrates) were measured at the 33 permanent sites. In addition, population dynamics were measured for all additional species of fish observed at the sites during the roving diver fish count. Survey techniques follow the CHIS Kelp Forest Monitoring Protocol Handbook (Davis et al. 1997) and an update to the sampling protocol handbook currently being developed (Kushner and Sprague, in progress). The techniques utilize SCUBA and surface-supplied-air to conduct the following monitoring protocols: 1 m2 quadrats, 5 m2 quadrats, band transects, random point contacts, fish transects, roving diver fish counts, video transects, size frequency measurements, and artificial recruitment modules. Hourly temperature data were collected using remote temperature loggers at 32 sites, the exception being Miracle Mile where there is no temperature logger installed. This annual report contains a brief description of each site including any notable observations or anomalies, a summary of methods used, and monitoring results for 2014. All the data collected during 2014 can be found in the appendices and in an Excel workbook on the NPS Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) portal. In the 2013 annual report (Sprague et al. 2020) several changes were made to the appendices. Previously, annual report density and percent cover data tables only included the current year’s data. Now, density and percent cover data are presented in graphical format and include all years of available monitoring data. Roving diver fish count (RDFC), fish size frequency, natural habitat size frequency, and Artificial Recruitment Module (ARM) size frequency data are now stored on IRMA at https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2259651. The temperature data graphs in Appendix L include the same graphs that were used in past reports, but include additional violin plot sections that compare monthly means from the current year to past years. In addition to the changes listed above, the layout of the discussion section was reordered by species instead of by site. The status of kelp forests differed among the five park islands. This is a result of a combination of factors including but not limited to, oceanography, biogeography and associated differences in species abundance and composition, as well as sport and commercial fishing pressure. All 33 permanent sites were established in areas that had or were historically known to have had kelp forests in the past. In 2014, 15 of the 33 sites monitored were characterized as developing kelp forest, kelp forest or mature kelp forest. In addition, three sites were in a state of transition. Two sites were part kelp forest and part dominated by Strongylocentrotus purpuratus...

Abstract:
In 2021, recreation visits to National Park Service (NPS) sites rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic-driven low visitation of 2020 and climbed to 297,115,406 recreation visits. This is an increase of 60 million recreation visits (+25.3%) from 2020 and a decrease of 30 million recreation visits (-9.3%) from 2019. Recreation visitor hours were 1,356,657,749 – a 28.6% increase from 2020 and a 5.1% decrease from 2019. Total overnight stays followed a similar pattern with 12,745,455 overnight stays – up 4.7 million (+58.5%) from 2020 and down 1.1 million (-8%) from 2019. Five parks were added to the reporting system in 2021: Alagnak Wild River in Alaska, Camp Nelson National Monument in Kentucky, Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument in Mississippi, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument in Nevada, and World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C. These parks were responsible for over 629,000 recreation visits in 2021. Factors influencing visits to National Park System units in 2021 include: continuing closures and limited capacities due to COVID-19 mitigation at some parks, temporary closures for wildland fires in 2021 (eleven parks), severe regional smoke/haze from ongoing wildland fires throughout the summer and early autumn affecting parks in the western half and northern tier of states in the continental U.S., two hurricanes in 2021 – both in August – impacted visitation: Hurricane Henri caused temporary closures of some parks in the northeast and Hurricane Ida caused temporary closures of parks along the Gulf Coast and generated some heavy flooding in the northeast, hurricanes and wildland fires in previous years resulting in lingering closures, most notably Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the Carr and Woolsey Fires in 2018, Hurricane Dorian in 2019, the Caldwell, Cameron Peak, East Troublesome, and Woodward Fires in 2020, and Hurricane Sally in 2020. Forty-four parks set a record for recreation visits in 2021 and 6 parks broke a record they set in 2020. See Appendix A for a list of record parks. The number of reporting units with over 10 million recreation visits was the same as in recent years (3 parks) and 73 parks had over 1 million recreation visits. Twenty-five percent of total recreation visits occurred in the top 8 parks and fifty percent of total visitation occurred in the top 25 parks. Several parks passed annual visitation milestones including Capulin Volcano NM which passed 100,000 annual recreation visits for the first time, Big Bend NP and Devils Tower NM which each passed 500,000 annual recreation visits for the first time, and Zion NP which passed 5 million visits for the first time. Other parks passed milestones for accumulated recreation visits including Hamilton Grange NMEM (1968-2021) and Palo Alto Battlefield NHP (2003-2021) each passing 1 million total recreation visits, Voyageurs NP (1976-2021) passing 10 million total recreation visits, and Hot Springs NP (1904-2021) passing 100 million total recreation visits. Population center designations were updated in 2021 to reflect overlap of park boundaries with statistical areas from the 2020 U.S. Census. Many population center changes reflect increases in local population as indicated by parks changing from rural to outlying or from outlying to suburban. Other changes reflect increasing complexity in population density as parks changed from a single designation, such as rural or suburban, to a mixed designation. See the Definitions section for population center definitions and Table B.1 for previous and updated population center designations by park. In the pages that follow, a series of tables and figures display visitor use data for calendar year 2021. By documenting these visits across the National Park System, the NPS Statistical Abstract offers a historical record of visitor use in parks and provides NPS staff and partners with a useful tool for effective management and planning. In 2021, 394 of 423 NPS units...

Margenau, Eric, and Lenza Paul. A 23-year summary of a Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) bird banding site in New River Gorge National River, West Virginia. National Park Service, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2287051.

Full text
Abstract:
Long-term bird banding data were collected from 1996–2019 (except in 2008) to assess the New River riparian zone avian community in one location in New River Gorge National River (NERI). The NERI banding station has banded over 4,500 individuals over 10,700 net hours in the twenty-three years it has been in operation and has captured 80 different species. Total captures, capture rate, and total species have been declining annually over the study period. Species associated with early-successional/shrubland habitat also declined over the study period, which is consistent with regional trends during the same time frame. Species richness of habitat guilds did not change over the study period within specific major habitat types. Capture metrics of Louisiana Waterthrush, an obligate riparian species, did increase over the study period. Continued banding will further provide information to assist in local management and contribute to regional data.

Day, Christopher M., Hiromal Premachandra, and Darcy M. Bullock. Characterizing the Impacts of Phasing, Environment, and Temporal Factors on Pedestrian Demand at Traffic Signals. Purdue University, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317352.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need for more and higher quality data on pedestrian demand patterns for a number of applications in planning, transportation engineering, public health, and other areas. It is particularly desirable to better characterize the influence of daily, weekly, and annual variations; the impact of weather and special events; and the effects of changes in pedestrian phasing. This paper proposes and demonstrates a methodology for quantifying the relative demand for pedestrian service at a signalized intersection by using the percent of signal cycles per hour in which the pedestrian phase was actuated. Although this performance measure does not by itself provide a pedestrian count, it can be used as a surrogate to characterize how pedestrian volumes vary due to operating conditions. More importantly, since this technique does not require new sensors, the data can be collected at thousands of intersections across the nation where pedestrian push buttons are in use. This paper documents findings from over a year of data collection at a signalized intersection on a college campus. The effects of daily/weekly/annual variations, special events, weather (temperature and precipitation), seasonal changes in activity patterns, and changes in pedestrian signal phasing are documented. A Tobit model is used to account for the influences of these variables and understand how they co-influence pedestrian activity. The implementation of an exclusive pedestrian phase is associated with a 9% increase in pedestrian phase utilization at the intersection. This change is associated with a decrease in user cost relative to performing midblock crossings. The modeled impact of snowfall events adds further insight by showing that as the user cost of making midblock crossings increases, pedestrian activity at the intersection increases.
