Abstract:

This research is an annotated translation. The object of the research is an English novel entitled Any Minute. The problems of the research are: 1) What are the difficulties the translator/researcher encountered during the process of translating the novel Any Minute? and 2) What are the solutions for those problems/difficulties? The objectives of this research are: a) to attain factual information concerning the problems/difficulties faced by the researcher and b) to solve the problems/difficulties in the course of translating the source text. In this annotated translation research, the translator/researcher uses the introspective and retrospective methods. The result and analysis reveal that there are 2 words, 8 phrases, 2 clauses, 8 sentences, and 5 idioms from the 25 data of the aspects of languages analyzed that were difficult for the translator/researcher. Those difficulties were at the same time became the problems of the translator/researcher. The solutions of the problems were attained by the annotation or analysis done relevant to the translation strategies and translation theories.

Abstract:

AbstractThis paper focuses on an important step in the creation of a system of meaning representation and the development of semantically annotated parallel corpora, for use in applications such as machine translation, question answering, text summarization, and information retrieval. The work described below constitutes the first effort of any kind to annotate multiple translations of foreign-language texts with interlingual content. Three levels of representation are introduced: deep syntactic dependencies (IL0), intermediate semantic representations (IL1), and a normalized representation that unifies conversives, nonliteral language, and paraphrase (IL2). The resulting annotated, multilingually induced, parallel corpora will be useful as an empirical basis for a wide range of research, including the development and evaluation of interlingual NLP systems and paraphrase-extraction systems as well as a host of other research and development efforts in theoretical and applied linguistics, foreign language pedagogy, translation studies, and other related disciplines.

Abstract:

Annotated translation is a study that provides annotations or notes on the chosen equivalents of a number of translated words as a form of translator’s accountability. Using a comparative model, this qualitative study aims to describe the problems that were encountered when translating the source text and finding the right translation strategy to be used for addressing the existing translation problems. In this research, the source text is a children literature (tale) titled Le Fils à la recherche de sa mère by Senegalese author. The problems that were encountered when translating this tale were issues related to language and culture, such as idioms, metaphors, and cultural words. The translation problems were then addressed by using translation strategies (methods and procedures) according to Newmark (1988). In generating translations and annotations, this research referred to various dictionaries and websites. The findings of this research are expected to enrich the French children literature translations from African countries that are rarely found in Indonesia.

Abstract:

The Buddhist argues that when two cognitive states are different, their objects are also different. For example, awareness of a pot is different from awareness of a cloth and their objects are different as well. Based on the pervasion that no two different cognitive states have the same object the Buddhist claims that the objects of inference and testimony on the one hand are different from the objects of (indeterminate) perception on the other. That is, what is perceived is never the same as what is inferred or learnt from testimony. This lends support to the Buddhist position that only unique particulars that are grasped in (indeterminate) perception are real; what are grasped in inference or testimony are not unique particulars and, accordingly, are not real. Udayana’s critique of the above position is explained and analyzed.

Abstract:

This article is based on an annotated translation research. The object of the research is an English novel My Lover My Friend, written by Suprina Frazier. The purpose of this research are (1) to attain factual information concerning the problems faced by the researcher in translating the source text; (2) to give plausible solutions to the difficulties. In conducting this annotated translation research, the researcher involved the introspective and retrospective research. The result of the research covered two main point. First, the finding reveals that from the 25 difficult problems, six were words, seven were phrases, two were idioms, four were clauses, and six were sentences. However in this journal, the researcher took ten items to be annotated. Second, those difficulties were solved by referring to the relevant theories of translation and English-Indonesian languages.

Abstract:

This article is based on annotated translation. Annotated translation is a translation with commentary. The objective of this article is to find out strategies that was employed in translating in Personal Pronoun I and You in the novel The Sins of Father by Jeffry Archer. The research used qualitative method with retrospective and introspective as research approached. The syntactic strategies by Chesterman is employ as tools of analysis. The result shows that from 25 data, there are 5 primary data which are taken using purposive sampling technique. There are 3 word ‘I’ and 2 word ‘You’, which all the data has the same translation principle and strategies.

Abstract:

The various meanings of discourse connectives like while and however are difficult to identify and annotate, even for trained human annotators. This problem is all the more important that connectives are salient textual markers of cohesion and need to be correctly interpreted for many NLP applications. In this paper, we suggest an alternative route to reach a reliable annotation of connectives, by making use of the information provided by their translation in large parallel corpora. This method thus replaces the difficult explicit reasoning involved in traditional sense annotation by an empirical clustering of the senses emerging from the translations. We argue that this method has the advantage of providing more reliable reference data than traditional sense annotation. In addition, its simplicity allows for the rapid constitution of large annotated datasets.

Abstract:

Linguistic knowledge plays an important role in phrase movement in statistical machine translation. To efficiently incorporate linguistic knowledge into phrase reordering, we propose a new approach: Linguistically Annotated Reordering (LAR). In LAR, we build hard hierarchical skeletons and inject soft linguistic knowledge from source parse trees to nodes of hard skeletons during translation. The experimental results on large-scale training data show that LAR is comparable to boundary word-based reordering (BWR) (Xiong, Liu, and Lin 2006), which is a very competitive lexicalized reordering approach. When combined with BWR, LAR provides complementary information for phrase reordering, which collectively improves the BLEU score significantly. To further understand the contribution of linguistic knowledge in LAR to phrase reordering, we introduce a syntax-based analysis method to automatically detect constituent movement in both reference and system translations, and summarize syntactic reordering patterns that are captured by reordering models. With the proposed analysis method, we conduct a comparative analysis that not only provides the insight into how linguistic knowledge affects phrase movement but also reveals new challenges in phrase reordering.

Abstract At the request of several scholars and laymen, the Leiden Peshitta Institute has initiated a translation project, the so-called New English Annotated Translation of the Syriac Bible (NEATSB). This article reviews the initial discussions as well as the decisions made with regard to the actual setup of this translation at the first NEATSB seminar in 1999. It also evaluates these theoretical reflections and the editorial policy based on them from the perspective of translation techniques, and concludes with sample translations of two passages from 1 Samuel. Abstract:

This essay provides an annotated translation with commentary of the title and opening three short sentences of João Guimarães Rosa’s “Grande Sertão: Veredas” from Portuguese into Brazilian Sign Language, Libras. A Libras translation uses elements of space and highly iconic structures to recreate the story is a visual form. The commentary here considers the challenges involved in translating the brief section of the Portuguese text, including accommodation of deaf literary norms to those of contemporary Brazilian society, the search for appropriate Libras signs for the regionally specific context of the novel, the needs of a deaf audience to see the visual aspects of the story, and the decisions made on how to represent GuimarãesRosa’s idiosyncratic style of Portuguese in Libras. It highlights the importance of the sign language translator working as a “translator-actor” where the written text told in first person is translated into Libras, producing a translation that is embodied and presented by the translator, who takes the role of the narrator’s “I”.

The object of the research is an English novel The Bonny Dawn, written by Catherine Cookson. The research problem is what are the annotated translation of style and clarity in the novel The Bonny Dawn. Abstract:

This annotated translation of selected works by the early Muslim mystic al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi of northeastern Iran, who died some time between 905 and 910 at about ninety years of age, was produced by the felicitous collaboration of two scholars. One of them, Bernd Radtke, has previously published studies in German on al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi and meticulously edited some of his works, while the other, John O'Kane, is known for his fine English translations of various Persian sources of Islamic mysticism. Though titled “Two Works,” the book actually includes three translations: (1) the translation of al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi's autobiography on pages 15–36 (which Radtke previously translated into German in Oriens 34 [1994]: 242–98); (2) the translation of al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi's Sirat al-awliya (The Way of Life of the Friends of God) on pages 38–211 (which, in a slightly different German translation, appeared as the first part of B. Radtke, Drei Schriften des Theosophen von Tirmid. Zweiter Teil: Übersetzung und Kommentar [Beirut, 1996], 9–154); and (3) the translation of an appendix of text passages selected from other works of al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi on pages 213–39, also previously published in German (Drei Schriften: Zweiter Teil, 154–74). The Introduction to the annotated translations is rather short, and its references are somewhat sparse and cryptic. Abstract:

This research is an annotated translation in which the researcher provides detailed explanation to account for his selection of translation equivalents. The data source in this research is <em>The Soul of the Indian</em>, a book by Charles Alexander Eastman. This study sought to identify problems encountered over the course of translation and offer the solutions thereto. The data for the study were derived from the problems thus identified and classified into categories of annotation. The qualitative method was employed using a comparative analysis translation model. The key findings of this research are twofold. First, out of 27 units of analysis, 8 are names of or designations for a God or Deity, 1 is the name of a ceremony, 1 is a designation for a spiritual figure, 1 is a name of a spiritual practice, 4 are figures of speech, 9 involve specific terms, and 3 are collocations. The translation itself employed 8 different procedures, with combined procedures being predominantly used. Second, the difficulties encountered when dealing with the problems were solved by employing relevant translation theories, methods, and procedures. These findings demonstrate that Indian spiritualism and culture are interrelated so that the annotation data obtained are not only spiritual in nature but also cultural. A translator should be knowledgeable not only about spiritualism, but also culture prevailing in both the source and target language communities.

Abstract:

The study of homonymy is vital to resolving fundamental problems in lexical semantics. In this paper, we propose four hypotheses that characterize the unique behavior of homonyms in the context of translations, discourses, collocations, and sense clusters. We present a new annotated homonym resource that allows us to test our hypotheses on existing WSD resources. The results of the experiments provide strong empirical evidence for the hypotheses. This study represents a step towards a computational method for distinguishing between homonymy and polysemy, and constructing a definitive inventory of coarse-grained senses.

Abstract:

<p>This thesis is an annotated translation consisting of a translation and translator’s arguments for choosing the equivalents of a number of translation units which are deemed to cause translation problems. The source text of this study is a comic book entitled Psychiatric Tales. The researcher used all contents of the comic book as research corpus. The translation methods applied in this study are communicative and semantic methods. In order to solve translation problems, the researcher applied several translation procedures. The annotation data were found to be related to several psychiatric nursing terms, metaphors, idioms, and onomatopoeias. This study shows that most of the translation units had to be translated using the communicative method even though the source text is a creative text. Moreover, the translator has taken account of the visual elements of the comic book and made use of informal language register. In conclusion, the translation of a comic book that contains psychiatric nursing terms and concepts requires particular attention because of the creative and informative nature of the text. </p>

Abstract:

<p class="TeksAbstrak">This research is an annotated translation study. The author conducted an Indonesian-Chinese translation of two chapters of the biography named Tokoh Tionghoa & Identitas Indonesia: Dari Tjoe Bou San Sampai Yap Thiam Hien and gave annotations to important and necessary parts. The specific purposes of this research can be described as follows: (1) find the appropriate method to translate this source text; (2) find out proper translation techniques and provide reasons for choosing equivalence. In translating this biography, the author uses communicative translation (Newmark, 1988) and considers the dynamic equivalence theory of Nida and Taber (1982) as the main principle. Annotations are divided into six groups, namely: culturally charged words, phrases that are translated into Chinese idioms, proper nouns, metaphors, footprints, and sentences. To translate a text successfully, translators need not only a good mastery of languages but also board knowledge.</p>
