Abstract:
"Yuewang Goujian shijia," the forty-first chapter of the Shiji, is one of the most important sources for the history of the ancient state of Yue. However, this chapter has not received serious scholarly examination in the West. Unlike those chapters of the Shiji which have been translated in the Shiji translation project headed by William Nienhauser, "Yuewang Goujian shijia" has not yet been translated into English. This thesis provides an annotated translation of the "Yuewang Goujian shijia." In addition, it has been argued that the history of the Spring and Autumn period in the Shiji is a compilation of earlier sources. The introduction to the translation will specifically look at the relationship of the "Yuewang Goujian shijia" to one of its proposed sources, the "Yueyu xia," which is the twenty-first chapter of the Guoyu. In comparing these two texts, it will be shown that dependence cannot be definitely demonstrated.

Esta tese consiste em uma tradução anotada do romance O Guia (1958), de R. K. Narayan. A tese apresenta uma discussão crítica de aspectos práticos e suposições teóricas subjacentes ao processo de tradução. Nas últimas décadas, a área de estudos da tradução expandiu-se e apropriou-se de vários significados, e atualmente vai muito além da dimensão textual. O conceito de tradução hoje engloba não só aspectos linguísticos como também questões culturais e históricas. As notas, portanto, dividem-se em duas categorias distintas: a) notas em português sobre expressões e palavras culturalmente específicas, que tem por objetivo fazer uma ponte entre barreiras culturais em relação ao leitor brasileiro, suplementando o texto traduzido; e b) notas sobre o processo de tradução como tal, discutidas em relação ao processo de análise e tomada de decisões do tradutor. Obras traduzidas desempenham um papel fundamental na propagação de tendências literárias no mundo todo, como demonstra o recente influxo de obras dos chamados escritores da diáspora a partir de regiões antigamente sob domínio colonial europeu. R. K. Narayan foi o primeiro escritor de língua inglesa profissional bem sucedido na Índia moderna, e abriu caminho para a literatura Indiana de língua inglesa contemporânea. O objetivo da tese se desdobra em dois eixos. Em um nível pragmático, o propósito principal é oferecer uma tradução informativa de O Guia para o meio acadêmico brasileiro. As notas explicam as escolhas feitas pelo tradutor e esclarecem as diversas questões culturais envolvidas na tradução. Em um nível analítico, o objetivo é pesquisar a dinâmica do processo tradutório, bem como os elementos que interagem nas tomadas de decisão e subsequente re-estruturação do texto na língua de chegada. bloco tem dois capítulos: A Cena Literária, um estudo introdutório sobre a vida do autor e contexto de sua obra, e A Cena nos Estudos de Tradução, que aborda alguns pressupostos teóricos, privilegiando a tradução orientada para o texto de partida. O segundo bloco, O Processo, apresenta a análise da tradução e o conjunto de estratégias empregadas. Este bloco tem dois capítulos: Notas sobre Aspectos Culturais, que traz a análise dos dois tipos de notas e Notas sobre o Processo de Tradução, o qual se compõe das seguintes seções: O Nivel Textual apresenta uma leitura crítica do romance, com ênfase na análise literária do processo de tradução, e também discute a presença da ironia e o papel do narrador. As seções O Nivel Sintático e O Nível Lexical complementam a discussão. O resultado final da pesquisa, a tradução anotada para fins acadêmicos, compõe o terceiro bloco. A tese é uma contribuição aos estudos de tradução no meio acadêmico brasileiro.
This dissertation consists of an informative annotated translation of R. K. Narayan’s novel The Guide (1958). The dissertation provides a critical discussion of practical aspects and underlying theoretical assumptions to the translating process. The field of translation studies has in the last decades taken on many meanings and now encompasses realms beyond the textual dimension. Translation today is as much about the translation of cultural and historical contexts and concepts as it is about language itself. The notes therefore fall into two distinct categories: a) notes in Portuguese about culturally specific phrases and words, which aim at bridging cross cultural barriers to the Brazilian reader and supplement the text translated; b) notes about the translation process itself discussed in the light of the process of analysis and decision making. Translations have played a critical role in spurring literary trends all over the world, as the recent influx of the so called "diaspora writers" from European colonial backgrounds attest. R. K. Narayan was modern India's first successful professional writer in English and cleared the path for contemporary Indian fiction in English. The objective of the dissertation is twofold. On a pragmatic level, the main objective is to provide the Brazilian academy with an informative translation of The Guide. The annotations are used to explain the choices made by the translator, and to clarify the manifold cultural issues involved in the translation. On an analytical level, the objective is to research the dynamics of the translation process, observing the nature of the elements that interact in the moment of the translator's decision and in the subsequent restructuring of the translated text. The dissertation is divided into three major blocks, The Premises, the Process and the Product. The first block contains two chapters: The Literary Scene, an introductory study of Narayan’s life and context of writing and The Translation Studies Scene, which deals with selected theoretical points and states the preference for a source text oriented approach. The second block, The Process, is the analysis of the translation of the novel itself and the set of strategies employed. This block has two chapters: Notes on Cultural Aspects presents an analysis of the two kinds of notes and Notes on the Translation Process, which is divided into the following sections. The Textual Level presents a close reading of the novel, points out to the importance of the literary analysis to the translation process, as well as discusses instances of irony and the role of the narrator. The sections Syntactic Level and Lexical Level complement the discussion. The final result of the work, the annotated translation itself, which is intended for academic research purposes only, is presented in the third block. The dissertation aims at contributing to the ongoing Brazilian studies of translation.

In his monumental study of 1896, La leyenda de los infantes de Lara, Ramon Menendez Pidal rescued the story of the Seven Knights de Lara (SKL) from near oblivion and sought to resolve the more problematic issues of the narration included in the thirteenth-century Estoria de España for the first time. Approximately a half-century later, the same story was retold in the Crónica de 1344 with more vivid and novelistic details, as well as episodes that were absent from the earlier version. Many scholars have dedicated their careers to studying the medieval epic, yet they have never read the SKL because there was no English translation of it. I have pioneered the first bilingual edition of the legend with the hope of making it accessible to a broader audience ofscholars and students ofthe Middle Ages. My objective was to capture accurately the details of the original texts while providing a translation that can be read independently of them. In order to achieve this goal, I took minor liberties and suppressed unnecessary repetitions, modernized the syntax, and divided the text into paragraphs. Keeping in mind the needs of an audience of scholars and students, I have provided explanations about key historical figures and events, geographical names, concepts of medieval law, specific points of contention among critics regarding certain passages or characters, and references to other literary works. A principal component of the edition is the preliminary study that presents the social, political, and literary contexts in which the narration was composed as well as the major problems that literary scholars discuss today: the questions about the origins of the legend and its authorship, the date of composition, medieval historiography, history and fiction in the SKL, the structure of the two versions and their differences, and the representation of the SKL in later literary works. In the study I not only present the major trends of scholarship that have emerged, but also develop and expound my own perspective on the legend. I assert that the chroniclers included the SKL in the Estoria de España to preserve a well-known story with a moralizing lesson about the dangers of internal enemies and treason.

Abstract:
This thesis contains a critical edition and annotated translation of the Khecarīvidyā of Ādinātha, an early haṭhayogic text which describes the physical practice of khecarīmudrā. 31 witnesses have been collated to establish the critical edition. The notes to the translation adduce parallels in other works and draw on Ballāla's Bṛhatkhecarīprakāśa commentary and ethnographic data to explain the text. The first introductory chapter examines the relationships between the different sources used to establish the critical edition. An analysis of the development of the text concludes that its compiler(s) took a chapter describing the vidyā (mantra) of the deity Khecarī from a larger text to form the framework for the verses describing the physical practice. At this stage the text preserved the Kaula orientation of the original work and included verses in praise of madirā, alcohol. By the time that the text achieved its greatest fame as an authority on the haṭhayogic practice of khecarīmudrā most of its Kaula features had been expunged so as not to offend orthodox practitioners of haṭhayoga and a short fourth chapter on magical herbs had been added. The second introductory chapter concerns the physical practice. It starts by examining textual evidence in the Pali canon and Sanskrit works for practices similar to the haṭhayogic khecarīmudrā before the time of composition of the Khecarīvidyā and then discusses the non-physical khecarīmudrās described in tantric works. There follows a discussion of how these different features combined in the khecarīmudrā of the Khecarīvidyā. Then a survey of descriptions of khecarīmudrā in other haṭhayogic works shows how the haṭhayogic corpus encompasses various differnt approaches to yogic practice. After an examination of the practice of khecarīmudrā in India today the chapter concludes by showing the haṭhayogic khecarīmudrā has generally been the preserve of unorthodox ascetics. In the third introductory chapter are described the 27 manuscripts used to establish the critical edition, the citations and borrowings of the text in other works, and the ethnographic sources. The appendices include a full collation of all the witnesses of the Khecarīvidyā, critical editions of chapters from the Matsyendrasaṃhitā and Haṭharatnāvalī helpful in understanding the Khecarīvidyā, and a list of all the works cited in the Bṛhatkhecarīprakāśa.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is a critical edition and an annotated English translation of Sefer Hakhmoni, one of the earliest commentaries on Sefer Yetzirah (The Book of Formation). The author, Shabbatai ben Abraham Donnolo, lived in Byzantine Southern Italy in the 10th century. He produced works on diverse topics ranging from medicine and pharmacology (Sefer ha-mirqahot, Antidotarium, Practica) to the study of the celestial bodies (Sefer ha-mazzalot and Barayta de-mazzalot), but he owes his greatest fame to Sefer Hakhmoni, his opus magnus wherein, by commenting on Sefer Yetzirah, he tried to reconcile the professional expertise he had acquired in the milieu of Byzantine Southern Italy with his Jewish background. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first part consists of seven chapters outlining the historical and cultural context of Donnolo's life in medieval Italy. The second part is a study of the manuscript tradition of Sefer Hakhmoni, followed by the critical edition of the Hebrew text and the annotated English translation. The first chapter offers a general overview of the presence of Jews in medieval southern Italy. The Jewish community of Apulia originated in the captive Judean population deported by Titus from Palestine to Italy after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. It was during the Byzantine period, however, that this Jewish community came to flourish, with the establishment of Talmudic schools and academies and the rebirth of the Hebrew language as a literary medium. This is evidenced by the funerary inscriptions of the Jewish catacombs of Apulia where, from the 8th century on, Latin and Greek were gradually being replaced by Hebrew, and by the emergence, from the 10th century, of Hebrew literature including the works of Donnolo, Sefer Yosippon and Sefer Yuhasin (Megillat Ahima‘atz). The second and third chapters present a detailed analysis of Donnolo’s life and literary production. He was born in Oria, from where he was deported, probably to Taranto, by Arab raiders in 925. According to his own account in the introductory section of Sefer Hakhmoni, he learned Greek, Latin and the local vernacular, all of which he used extensively in his works. He spent most of his life in Rossano Calabro, one of the most important Byzantine cities, where he was on good terms with the Christian ecclesiastical and political establishments. The fourth chapter is devoted to the study of Donnolo’s scientific and exegetical Jewish and non-Jewish sources. The fifth, sixth and seventh chapters of the first part attempt to explain why Donnolo set Sefer Hakhmoni, his major work, as a commentary on Sefer Yetzirah – an anonymous work of uncertain provenance which, prior to the appearance of the first 10th century commentaries by Sa‘adiah Gaon, Dunash ibn Tamim and Donnolo himself, was virtually unknown in the Hebrew literary tradition. By commenting on Sefer Yetzirah’s cosmological and metaphysical statements, Donnolo was able to display his own scientific knowledge, underpinned by Neo-Platonic principle whereby the microcosm reflects the structure and model of operation of the macrocosm. The second part of the thesis provides a detailed analysis of the thirty-two extant manuscripts of Sefer Hakhmoni and the relationships between them, concluding with a graphic outline of the stemma codicum. This is followed by the critical edition of the Hebrew text and the annotated English translation. The fourth part consists of the bibliography and of an appendix concerning the study of astrological chart contained in the introductory section Donnolo’s text.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the first ever which provides an annotated translation and analysis of the Gaṇitatilaka by Śrīpati and its Sanskrit commentary by the Jaina monk Siṃhatilakasūri (14th century CE). The Gaṇitatilaka is a Sanskrit mathematical text written by Śrīpati, an astronomer-mathematician who hailed from 11th century CE Maharashtra. It has come down to us together with Siṃhatilakasūri’s commentary in a uniquely extant yet incomplete manuscript. The only edition available of both Sanskrit texts is by Kāpadīā (1937). Siṃhatilakasūri’s commentary upon the Gaṇitatilaka GT is a precious source of information on medieval mathematical practices. To my knowledge, this is, in fact, the first Sanskrit commentary on mathematics –whose author is known– that has survived to the present day and the first written by a Jaina that has come down to us. This work has never before been studied or translated into English. It is my intention to show that the literary practices adopted by Siṃhatilakasūri, in expounding step-by-step Śrīpati’s work, enrich the commentary in such a way that it consequently becomes “his own mathematical text.” Together with the English translation of both the root-text by Śrīpati and the commentary by Siṃhatilakasūri, I present the reconstruction of all the mathematical procedures explained by the commentator so as to understand the way medieval Indian mathematics was carried out. I also investigate Siṃhatilakasūri’s interpretative arguments and the interaction between numbers and textual norms which characterises his work. The present research aims to: i) edit the Sanskrit edition by Kāpadīā ii) revise the English translation of Śrīpati’s text by Sinha (1982) iii) provide the first annotated English translation of selected passages from the commentary by Siṃhatilakasūri iv) highlight the contribution to our understanding of the history of Indian mathematics brought by this commentary and v) investigate Siṃhatilakasūri’s literary style.

Abstract:
As one of the essential elements for Natural Language Processing (NLP), discourse has called much attention during recent years. Many studies explore the role of how discourse elements affect in different NLP research areas, such as parsing, sentiment analysis, machine translation evaluation, among others. Besides, along with the discourse analysis development, different treebanks annotated with discourse information for different languages form a great contribution for advancing the NLP researches. Spanish and Chinese are two of the most spoken languages in the world; the language pair occupy an important position for NLP studies. Therefore, this study aims to make a discourse analysis between the two languages in terms of annotating discourse similarities and differences under the theoretical framework of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) by Mann and Thompson (1988). Our goal, which is the main objective of this study, based on the annotation results, the study seeks to develop a protocol that includes recommendations for Spanish-Chinese translation. In addition, with a globalized context in the current society, the communication between Spanish and Chinese is more and more intensive. Therefore, another intention of our study is to develop some resources for the language learning between Spanish-Chinese. To achieve our goals, for the development of the protocol, we firstly establish a Spanish-Chinese parallel corpus and annotate the discourse information of the entire corpus. Then we evaluate the annotation results following a qualitative method to guarantee the high quality of the annotation results. Lastly, we conclude the discourse similarities and differences to make the protocol. Regarding the language learning between the two languages, we fully use the manually annotated discourse markers (DM) to develop a question-answering module. In recent years, there have been few contrastive works of Spanish and Chinese for discourse analysis. Therefore, this PhD study aims to partially fill a knowledge gap in the study between Spanish and Chinese.
Como uno de los elementos esenciales para el Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural (PLN), el discurso ha llamado mucho la atención durante los últimos años. Diversos estudios exploran el papel de cómo los elementos del discurso afectan en diferentes áreas de investigación del PLN, por ejemplo, el análisis sintáctico, el análisis de sentimientos, la evaluación de la traducción automática, entre otros. Además, junto con el desarrollo del análisis del discurso, diferentes treebanks anotados con infomación discursiva para diferentes idiomas forman una gran contribución para el avance de las investigaciones del PLN. El español y el chino son dos de los idiomas más hablados en el mundo, ambos ocupan un lugar importante para los estudios de PNL. Por lo tanto, este estudio pretende hacer un análisis del discurso entre las dos lenguas en términos de anotar similitudes y diferencias del discurso bajo el marco teórico Teoría de la Estructura Retórica (RST) de Mann y Thompson (1988). El objetivo principal de este estudio, basado en los resultados de la anotación, busca desarrollar un protocolo que incluya recomendaciones para la traducción entre el español y el chino. Además, en un contexto globalizado en la sociedad actual, la comunicación entre españoles y chinos es cada vez más intensa. Por lo tanto, la otra intención de nuestro estudio es desarrollar algunos recursos para el aprendizaje de idiomas entre los españoles y los chinos. Para lograr nuestros objetivos de desarrollo del protocolo, primero establecemos un corpus paralelo español-chino y anotamos la información discursiva de todo el corpus. Luego evaluamos los resultados de la anotación siguiendo un método cualitativo para garantizar la alta calidad de los resultados de anotación. Por último, concluimos las similitudes y diferencias del discurso para hacer este protocolo. Con respecto al aprendizaje de lenguas entre el español y el chino, utilizamos completamente los marcadores discursivos (MD) anotados manualmente para desarrollar un módulo de preguntas y respuestas. En los últimos años, han habido pocos trabajos que comparen el español y el chino. Por lo tanto, este estudio de doctorado tiene como objetivo llenar parcialmente una brecha de conocimiento entre el estudio de las lenguas española y china.

Abstract:
South African common law represents a European ius commune based upon Roman law and Roman-Dutch law of the seventeenth century. Included within South African common law is a large volume of medieval commentaries on Roman law, rarely touched upon by legal historians. The number of South African legal practitioners with a working knowledge of Latin has rapidly declined since the abolition of Latin as a compulsory subject for the LL.B degree in 1996. This state of affairs has led to the marginalisation of untranslated common law sources, as fewer legal practitioners are able to read and understand Latin. Although many Roman legal sources have already been translated into modem Romance languages, medieval commentaries on Roman law are still largely untranslated and therefore of little value to most legal practitioners. The idiosyncrasies and peculiar language of medieval legal Latin has further contributed to the untranslatability thereof, and even jurists with a working knowledge of classical Latin find it difficult to translate. This study aims to provide access through translation and historical annotation to an important untranslated medieval legal text, the Tractatus de jluminibus seu Tyberiadis by the medieval Italian jurist, Bartolus of Saxoferrato (1313 - 1357). The text is concerned with alluvion, an original mode of acquisition of ownership, which is still relevant in contemporary South African law and has recently been perpetuated in section 33 of the Land Survey Act 8 of 1997.

Abstract:
This thesis contains a critical edition, translation and study of the Amanaska, which is a medieval Sanskrit yoga text of one hundred and ninety-eight verses in two chapters (adhyāya). Seventy-five manuscripts have been consulted for this edition and thirty-two were selected for the full collation on the basis of stemmatic analysis on a sample collation of all the manuscripts. The critical apparatus contains references to parallel verses in other works and the notes to the translation provide further information on the content, terminology and obscure passages of the text by citing other Sanskrit works, in particular, earlier Tantras and medieval yoga texts, as well as a Nepalese commentary on the Amanaska. The first part of the Introduction contains a summary of the text and an examination of the colophons of all the available manuscripts in order to establish the proper titles of the text and each of the chapters. Unlike previous editors, I have adopted the title Amanaska because it is found in the great majority of manuscript colophons. The title of previous printed editions, Amanaskayoga, appears to derive from nineteenth-century manuscript catalogues. The authorship of the text has been discussed in light of the claim made in recent Indian scholarship that it was written by Gorakṣanātha, the pupil of Matysendranātha. I conclude that the author is unknown. Discrepancies between the chapters, in particular, various incongruities in content and differences in the limits of dating, strongly suggest that both chapters were originally composed as separate works. Unlike previous editions, this one is based on the north-Indian recension. There is evidence that the north-Indian recension has preserved a more coherent version of the first chapter. The additional verses of the south-Indian recension have been edited and included separately in appendix A. The first part of the Introduction also includes fourteen sections on the content of the Amanaska. The first six of these sections are on absorption (laya), the practice of eliminating reality levels (tattva) and Layayoga, and the following sections cover yogic powers (siddhi), Śāmbhavī Mudrā, the term amanaska and the Amanaska's known sources for verses on the no-mind state. The final section called, 'Amanaska: the Effortless Leap to Liberation' examines the salient teachings of the Amanaska in light of previous ascetic, yogic and tantric traditions, in an attempt to answer questions about whom its intended audience may have been and its place within India's history of yoga. The first part of the Introduction concludes with a discussion of yoga texts which have been either directly or indirectly influenced by the Amanaska. Seeing that many of these texts have not been critically edited or translated, I have discussed their date of composition and their content in addition to the material that derives from the Amanaska. The second part of the Introduction provides essential details on the seventy-four manuscripts consulted for this edition, brief comments on the shortcomings of the previous printed editions and an explanation of the editing methodology. The recensions of the text are discussed in this section as well as my editorial policy. The critical edition and translation of the Amanaska are presented together. Each Sanskrit verse is followed by the translation and its critical apparatus is at the bottom of the page. The endnotes to each verse are located at the end of its respective chapter. Appendices B-E include four stemmatic diagrams along with brief descriptions of each hyparchetype, a list of symbols and abbreviations and an outline of the conventions used in the critical apparatus.

D. O. Fagunwa's Igbo Olodumare (The Forest of God) is a novel about the story of Olowo-aiye's adventure in the Forest of God. Olowo-aiye sets out to Igbo Olodumare (The Forest of God) out of sheer love for an adventure and a quest for an opportunity to prove himself as a powerfulhunter who cannot be daunted by the awe of the unknown--a basic characteristic of the traditional Yoruba hunters. Thus Fagunwa, in his characteristic vividness of imagination, artistic prowess, dazzling language, and a compelling descriptive skill, projects events and episodes around Olowo-aiye as he moves along on his journey to, in and from Igbo Olodumare. The events and the episodes are those of Olowo-aiye's struggle with the trolls, gnomes, weird creatures, and his visits to the sage, (Mr.) Death, and Miss Disease. After this experience-packed sojourn in the Forest of God, he finally returns home to join his family and to rejoice at the sight of his son Akara-ogun--who is now grown. Akara-ogun, of course, is the hero of Fagunwa's first novel Ogboju Ode minu Igbo Irunmale translated by Wole Soyinka as The Forest of a Thousand Daemons: A Hunter's Saga.This dissertation translates and annotates D. 0. Fagunwa's Igbo Olodumare with a critical introduction which is divided into seven parts. Part one deals with the literature review; while part two deals with a brief biography of D. 0. Fagunwa--the author whose Judeo-Christian background, his culture, and the tradition and the world-view of his ethnic group--Yoruba--shape his thought-pattern and his imagination. These cultural traditional and philosophical background strongly inform his work of art.Part three briefly comments on the thought-pattern that informs his works, emphasizes and explains the nature of Fagunwa's dichotomized world--a concept that emanates from his cultural and traditional background. Part four gives a synopsis of his (Fagunwa's) Igbo Olodumare with a brief comment on the structure and the symbolic aspects of the novel.Part five briefly discusses the structure, syntax and the tone of the language in which Fagunwa wrote--Yoruba--a linguistic parameter which makes the task of translating Yoruba literature to English a difficult task. As a corollary to that part, part six discusses Fagunwa's rhetorical prowess as evident in 1is esoteric use of Yoruba--a technique which saturates his entire novels, and makes him the master of his mother tongue, Thus it is the translator's task to adequately convey in English-a nontonal language--the rhythm and the verbal gymnastics which Fagunwa displays particularly in his Igbo Olodumare (The Forest of God).The last part, part seven, spells the translator's main objective, Philosophy, and the method of translation. The overriding objective, the note explains, is readability, intelligibility and an equivalent effect.In order to achieve this end, the translation is annotated; while the idea of narrative bridge is ventured as a mechanism which allows a smooth flow of the narratives in the translated edition. Furthermore, the translator's stylistic idiosyncrasy is sacrificed in order to unveil the author's meanings in his own words and style.

Abstract:
Charles Nokan is an Ivorian poet, novelist and dramatist of the second generation of Francophone African writers. A militant writer, Nokan has constantly condemned the failures of the independent Ivory Coast and of those of other independent African nations with an emphasis on the increasing poverty of their peoples. Paradoxically, Nokan is the least known today by the Ivorian public, and his artistic talents have not been fully recognized in his homeland even if in Europe, especially France, his canon has been largely discussed in literary circles and newspapers.In writing this dissertation, I intend to arouse scholarly interest in Ivorian literature, to increase Nokan's readership and to satisfy potential international curiosity. Therefore, I have chosen to translate and annotate Nokan's Violent Etait leVent (1966) and to provide the translation with a critical introduction. The reasons for selecting this novel are twofold: first, it is the novel most representative of his literary canon. Second, Nokan's narrative structure in the novel is especially interesting: it sought to comply with the aesthetic of his own Baoule people. In the novel, the protagonist Kossia relates moments of his childhood in his village. Then, with the help of a friend, Djahah, Kossia goes to study in France. When he returns home, he teaches classes on the revolutionary history of the masses. But he has to fight against powerful neo-colonial forces. His struggle is an epic one, ending in death.This dissertation is divided into five parts. Part One deals with Nokan's life and place in African literature; it also provides the intellectual and political movement against colonialism in twentieth century Africa. Part Two focuses on the African values, customs, traditions and briefly comments on the political history of the Ivory Coast. Part Three is a discussion of the problems encountered and of the choices made during the translation process. Part Four deals with the English translation of Violent Etait le Vent. Finally, Part Five discusses Nokan's narrative technique and narrative content in the novel. The analyses show that Nokan imitates aspects of the African oral traditions and utilizes them to develop a new form of novel marked by his peculiar eccentricity of style. The narrative strategy is the first of its kind in African literature.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to study in depth the contribution to Sufism made by the little-known 4th/10th century figure Abū Ṭālib al-Makkī. The first chapter deals with an analysis of the life and works of al-Makkī against the background of the religious milieu of his time. A major section of the thesis (the second and third chapters) provides for the first time in English a translation of the Kitāb al-tawba of al-Makkī. The fourth chapter assesses the originality of al-Makkī's Kitāb al-tawba and compares it with similar Ṣūfī works of the period. The fifth chapter attempts to compare and contrast al-Makkī and al-Ghazālī's approach to Sufism through an analysis of their respective Kitāb al-tawba. It has long been known that in his work on Sufism, al-Ghazālī depended very heavily upon al-Makkī. This thesis conclusively proves this dependence whilst pointing to the more sophisticated presentation of al-Ghazālī. Al-Makkī is shown to have been one of the early Ṣūfī figures who tried to harmonise the views of the Baṣran and Baghdād Ṣūfī groups and to effect a synthesis between moderate Sufism and the Sharī'a.

This thesis is based on the second volume of Afal al-Tavarikh, the 17th century Safavid court chronicle. It consists of a historiographical study of this source and an annotated translation of the section concerning the early years of Shah Tahmasp's reign (1524-1529). The author Fazl b. Zayn al-'Abidim b. Rub Allah alKhuzani al-Isfahani was writing his history in 1617-1639 during the reigns of Shah 'Abbas I (r. 1587-1629) and Shah Safi (r. 1629-1642) and devoted the second volume entirely to the reign of Shah Tahmasp (r. 1524-1576). Chapter one of the thesis deals with the author, his life and career as a provincial Vazir during the reign of Shah 'Abbas, and his emigration to India. It identifies the formative influences which shaped the author's distinctive view of history. One of Fazli's strengths as a historian is his use of histories that are no longer extant. The sources have therefore been examined in order to assess the influence of these "lost histories" on his presentation of Shah Tahmasp's early reign. Altal al-Taviifikh contains transcriptions of more official documents than are found in any other Safavid court chronicle. The first chapter therefore underlines the importance of this source as a depository of chancery documents. The historiographical evaluation of Aftal proposes that this history is essentially a product of the reign of Shah

Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma tradução comentada, do francês para o português, de parte de uma obra clássica de importância científica. O autor escolhido foi o médico e cientista francês Claude Bernard, que, entre os anos de 1843 e 1879, publicou dezenas de livros sobre sua prática como professor de Fisiologia no Collège de France, em Paris. Dentre eles, o escolhido para este trabalho foi Introduction à létude de la médecine expérimentale (1865), após análise de um grande número de obras desse autor e contando com a consultoria de especialistas nas áreas de Filosofia e de História da Ciência. O livro que nos serve de corpus é composto por uma Introdução, seguida de três partes: Do raciocínio experimental, A experimentação nos seres vivos e Aplicações do método experimental no estudo dos fenômenos da vida. A proposta de trabalho inclui a tradução da Introdução e da Primeira Parte do livro, trazendo uma série de notas de diferentes tipos, relacionadas tanto ao conteúdo científico quanto a questões de tradução propriamente ditas. A nossa opção de tradução na elaboração dessa proposta foi a de levar o leitor ao encontro do texto original, isto é, em direção ao autor, o que consiste em um procedimento de tradução denominado estrangeirizante (Venuti, 1995), que privilegia o estilo de escrita desse autor, a terminologia por ele utilizada e enfatiza as questões científicas do século XIX por ele abordadas, da maneira como as mesmas se inseriam no contexto da época, em relação ao século XXI.
In this study, we present a translation with commentary (or annotated translation), from French to Portuguese, covering a section of a classic work of scientific importance. The author chosen was the French physician and scientist Claude Bernard, who published dozens of books about his practice as a professor of physiology at the College de France in Paris between 1843 and 1879. Upon consideration of a large number of works by this author and with the experts` advice in the fields of Philosophy and History of Science, the book chosen for this work was Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865). The book that is our corpus consists of an Introduction, followed by three parts: The Experimental Reasoning; Experimentation in Living Beings; Applications of the Experimental Method in the Study of the Phenomena of Life. The proposed work includes the translation of the Introduction and First Part of the book, adding several notes of different types, related both to scientific content and to translation issues. Our choice of translation for the development of this proposal was to take the reader into the original text or to its author, consisting of a translation procedure denominated foreignizing (Venuti, 1995). Therefore, we focused on the author`s writing style and terminology, emphasizing the scientific issues in the context of the nineteenth century, compared to the twenty-first century.

The Nāmamantrārthāvalokinī ('An Explanation of the Meaning of the Namemantras') is an early, and major, commentary on the Nāmasaṃgīti ('The Chanting of Names'). Written by the eighth century Indian ācārya Vilāsavajra, it survives in the original Sanskrit and in Tibetan translation. The Nāmasamgīti enumerates the 'Names' of Mañjuśrī, the Mahayana figure embodying wisdom, and it exerted a strong influence on liturgy, ritual and meditation in the later phase of Buddhism in India (750-1200 CE). Vilāsavajra's commentary is written from a Yogācāra perspective and interprets the 'Names' within an elaborate ritual framework which consists in a maṇḍala that has Mañjuśrī as its central deity. The central part of the thesis comprises a critical edition and annotated translation of the Sanskrit text of the first five chapters of Vilāsavajra's commentary, approximately a quarter of the whole. The critical edition is based on eight Nepalese manuscripts for which a stemma codicum is established. Two blockprint editions of the Tibetan translation are consulted at cruces in the Sanskrit. Their readings, treated as those of any other witness, are incorporated into the apparatus as appropriate. The edition is followed by textual notes. Introductory material is divided into two parts. Matters relating to the Sanskrit and Tibetan materials are discussed in a section placed before the edition. These include a description of the manuscripts, discussion of the method of editing, establishment of the stemma codicum and an assessment of the Tibetan translation. An introduction to the contents precedes the translation and is primarily concerned with an outline of the ritual structure of the commentary, giving particular attention to chapters 1-5. Evidence concerning the life and date of Vilāsavajra is considered, suggesting he should be placed in the latter part of the eighth century. Assessing the work's significance for the study of Buddhism, 1 suggest that it is of historical importance in that it throws light on the process by which Tantric methods were being related to soteriology in this period; and that it contains material, especially in the sādhana of chapter 4, that contributes to an understanding of the development of Tantric forms of Buddhist meditation. The work is also the only known instance of a commentary of a Yogatantra type that survives in Sanskrit.

O poeta milanês Giuseppe Parini (1729-1799), embora ocupe um papel de destaque na história da literatura italiana no século XVIII, não é estudado no Brasil, inclusive dentro do ambiente acadêmico voltado aos estudos da italianística. Seu poema narrativo Il Giorno é considerado uma das mais importantes obras do Settecento italiano, apresentando uma dura crítica à nobreza do século XVIII por meio de uma sátira que busca se opor à poesia árcade sentimental em voga na época. O poema de Parini serviu de inspiração para grandes autores da literatura italiana estudados atualmente inclusive no Brasil, como Giacomo Leopardi, Alessandro Manzoni e Ugo Foscolo. Original, clássico e, ao mesmo tempo, atual, Il Giorno é uma obra que merece ser incluída nos estudos de literatura da academia brasileira e, portanto, necessita de uma versão comentada e anotada em língua portuguesa. Entendemos que sua ausência nos estudos dos italianistas brasileiros deva-se sobretudo à dificuldade de compreensão do poema, repleto de latinismos e figuras de linguagem e som, e julgamos que apresentar uma tradução comentada de ao menos uma parte Il Giorno é uma forma de incentivar o contato de professores, pesquisadores e estudantes com esse grande autor e, dessa forma, torná-lo conhecido em nosso meio acadêmico. Portanto, apresentamos uma tradução comentada de Il Mattino, primeira parte da obra. Trata-se de uma tradução estrangeirizante, que preserva os arcaísmos e rebuscamentos do poema italiano, fundamentais em sua constituição como obra satírica ao se contrapor ao assunto narrado na obra: o dia a dia superficial e irrelevante de um jovem membro da aristocracia italiana do século XVIII.
Although the Milanese poet Giuseppe Parini (1729-1799) plays a prominent role in the history of Italian literature of the eighteenth century, he is not studied in Brazil, not even within the academic community focused on Italian studies. His narrative poem Il Giorno is considered one of the most important works of the Italian Settecento: it presents a harsh criticism to the nobility of the eighteenth century by means of a satire that seeks to oppose itself to the sentimental Arctic poetry, very much in vogue at the time. Parinis poem was an inspiration for great Italian writers that are studied nowadays, in Brazil as well as abroad, such as Leopardi, Manzoni and Ugo Foscolo. Original, classic and modern at the same time, Il Giorno deserves to be included in the literature studies of the Brazilian academic community, and, therefore, needs an annotated version in Brazilian Portuguese. We understand that its absence in the field of Italian studies in Brazil is dewed mainly to the difficulty of its comprehension, full of Latinisms and stylistic literary devices, and we believe that an annotated translation of at least one part of Il Giorno is a way to encourage teachers, researchers and students to get in touch with this great writer and, thereby, make him known in our academic community. Therefore, we present an annotated translation of Il Mattino, the first part of Il Giorno. It is a foreignization translation, with all the archaisms and refinements of the Italian poem, considering that those archaisms and refinements, when countering the subject narrated in the work the superficial and irrelevant day-to-day of a young member of the Italian aristocracy of the eighteenth century , are fundamental to the formation of the poem as a satiric work.

Denna uppsats består av två översättningar av den japanska författaren Osamu Dazais noveller Spring, Moerus! och Hundra vyer över Fuji från japanska till svenska samt en analys som ur ett litteratur-vetenskapligt perspektiv hjälper till att fastställa översättningsstrategin – att göra en adekvansinriktad och främmandegörande översättning. Översättningarna följs av en översättningsteoretisk kommentar som fokuserar på de tre problemområdena grammatik och lexikon, menings- och styckesstruktur samt passivering. Ett litteraturvetenskapligt perspektiv för källtextanalysen visar sig vara mycket tillämpbart för dessa texter på grund av deras genre, jag-romanen, som är typisk för japansk 1900-talslitteratur. Källtexterna och måltexterna finns med som bilagor.
This essay consists of two translations of the two Japanese short stories Hashire Merosu and Fugaku Hyakkei (in Swedish Spring Moerus! and Hundra vyer över Fuji) by the author Osamu Dazai from Japanese to Swedish. An analysis through a literary science perspective helps to establish the translation strategy, which is to make an adequate and foreignized translation. The translations are followed by a theoretical translation annotation which focuses on the issues of grammar and lexicon, sentence and paragraph structure along with the usage of the passive form. A literary science perspective on the source text analysis proves to be very applicable for these texts because of their genre, the I-novel, which is typical for 20th century Japanese literature. The source and target texts are available as appendixes at the end of the essay.

Dans la première partie, intitulée « À la recherche du traducteur », on s’intéresse à C. H. de Fouchécour en tant que chercheur et spécialiste de la littérature classique persane et traducteur du Divân de Hâfez. Dans le premier chapitre, on étudie sa carrière dès ses commencements afin de révéler la manière dont il aborde et conçoit les œuvres persanes. Le deuxième chapitre est consacré au traducteur qu’est C. H. de Fouchécour et on révèle ce qu’il pense de l’acte de traduire (sa position traductive), le projet traductif qu’il a adopté pour traduire l’œuvre de Hâfez et enfin l’horizon traductif, c’est-à-dire la situation de la traduction poétique en France et surtout l’historique de la traduction des poèmes hâféziens en français. This thesis intends to offer a “traductological critique” of the first complete translation of the Divan of Hafiz in French, which, upon its publication, aroused both admiration and criticism and earned its translator, Charles-Henri de Fouchécour, several literary awards and titles. In the first part, entitled "In Search of the translator," we focus on C. H. de Fouchécour as a researcher and specialist in classical Persian literature and translator of the Divan of Hafiz. In the first chapter, we examine his career from its beginning, to reveal how he approaches and presents Persian works. The second chapter is devoted to the translator that is C. H. de Fouchécour and reveals how he conceives translation, the specific perspective he adopted to translate the Divan of Hafiz and finally his “horizon traductif”, in other words the situation of the poetic translation in France and especially the history of the translation of Hafiz’s poems in French. The second part of this research, "Translation and poetry", is devoted to the source text and the translated text; that is to say, in the third chapter, we present a new reading of the Hafizian thought, paying a special attention to the form of his poetry. In the fourth chapter, having established a three-dimensional method of comparison, based to the reading presented in the previous chapter, we compare five ghazals of Hafiz with their French translations by A. During the fourteenth century, with the rise of Dol po pa Shes rab rgyal mtshan (1292-1361), the gzhan stong philosophical tradition became a source of great controversy in Tibet. Dol po pa taught this new philosophical tradition for the first time to the wider Tibetan intellectual community. As Dol po pa's Jo nang teachings attracted an audience, many other philosophical giants of the day, such as Bu ston Rin chen grub (1290-1364), Red mda' ba Gzhon nu blo gros (1349-1412/13), and their students composed polemical works to refute Jo nang tradition. Lamp that Illuminates the Expanse of Reality was composed in the midst of this controversy to defend the Jo nang point of view. In it, its author, Gha rung pa Lha'i rgyal mtshan (1319-1402/03), attempts to prove that the Jo nang philosophical tradition is the definitive teaching and the quickest path to achieve the Buddhahood.

This study endeavours to elucidate the journal of Captain Hermanus Hofmeijer of the Dutch man 0' war, Amsterdam, which has been transcribed from the original script, translated from Dutch into English and interpreted from a contemporary viewpoint. It offers an opportunity to evaluate a unique primary historical document which records an important historical event. An attempt has been made to contextualise the incident in the light of the early history of the Dutch people. The contribution of the Dutch East India Company (VaC) to the trade and commerce of the Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries has been assessed together with the shipbuilding techniques that served to make the Dutch a major seafaring nation. The significance of Texel and Nieuwediep has been examined and the sea route and navigational instruments placed in perspective. The voyage has been analysed in some detail. The background of Captain Hermanus Hofmeijer has proved especially interesting. Although he pursued his career with the Dutch Navy, he was born and spent his early years in Cape Town, South Africa. The time spent by the Amsterdam in Batavia, Samaraog and Sourabaya gives an insight into the Dutch possessions overseas. The return voyage, storms and ultimate grounding are of special interest as Hofmeijer records the journey and events on a daily basis. The impact and significance of 217 extra people in the Eastern Cape area did not go unnoticed, and although the event was not well documented, an attempt at some contextualisation has been made. Finally a short overview of maritime archaeology in South Africa and its significance as a relatively new discipline has been included. The study of the material remains of the wreck of the Amsterdam has resulted in a new understanding of wooden ships built in the early 19th century.

This thesis is comprised of an annotated translation of an English IT-text into Swedish. The source text is the installation manual for the software SDL Trados Studio 2014 and the thesis also contains a text analysis of the source text. The goal of the translation has been to use norms in the target culture and thus move the translation toward acceptability. The thesis therefore discusses norms based on Toury's (1995) framework. The thesis also contains an empirical study of the translation of three different IT-texts. The study shows that, when it comes to the specific norms investigated in the study, Swedish translations of IT-texts are guided by norms in both the source culture and the target culture.
Uppsatsen innehåller en teoretiserande översättningskommentar till en översättning av en IT-text. Källtexten är installationsmanualen till programvaran SDL Trados Studio 2014 och uppsatsen innehåller även en textanalys av denna. Målet har varit att genomföra en acceptansinriktad översättning och översättningsarbetet utgår från de normbegrepp som diskuteras av Toury (1995). Dessutom innehåller uppsatsen en empirisk studie av normbruk i översättningar av tre IT-texter som liknar den egna översättningens källtext. Cette thèse est consacrée aux Préfaces à la Bible de Luther, un corpus peu étudié jusqu’à présent. La première partie consiste en une analyse chronologique de ce corpus, préface par préface. Elle montre comment Luther interprète la Bible et invite ses lecteurs à la comprendre. Il donne des clés herméneutiques et confère à ses préfaces différentes fonctions (par exemple « fonction sommaire », « fonction polémique » ou «fonction pastorale ». Il forge ainsi une culture biblique « évangélique » qui permet à son lecteur de s’approprier le texte. Les préfaces complètent notre connaissance de Luther, traducteur et théologien, et révèlent différentes facettes de sa personnalité. La deuxième partie est la traduction annotée des Préfaces à partir de la dernière édition de la Bible de Luther (1545), ainsi que de préfaces antérieures (Psaumes, Apocalypse). The present thesis is dedicated to the “Prefaces to the Bible” by Luther, a body that has rarely been studied thus far. The first part involves a chronological analysis of the former body, preface by preface.It shows how Luther interprets the Bible and how he appeals to his readers’ understanding of it. He offers hermeneutical keys and provides his prefaces with different functions that can serve as (for example “ a summary”, ”a controversy” or have a“pastoral function”) There by building a biblical knowledge of the Gospel that will allow the reader to get hold of the text. The prefaces supplement our insight of Luther as a translator and theologian, and reveal different aspects of his personality.The second part is the annotated translation of the Prefaces on the basis of the last edition of Luther’s Bible (1545), as well as of earlier prefaces (The Psalms, The Book of Revelation)Most of these texts had never been translated into French.
