Abstract:
Philosophy and comedy are parallel enterprises of self-detachment. But while philosophy consistently carries out the detachment, comedy underlines its contradictions and undermines it. Thus, comedy gains an advantage especially where it reflects upon the material body which underlies every reflection, namely, its medium. My paper observes this process by studying Woody Allen's Annie Hall. Thus, the media-philosophy of the film can be contrasted against a philosopher's philosophy of the very same film.

Abstract:
Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, has been the subject of fictional and nonfictional historical narratives since her execution in 1536. Although already a contentious figure for her role in Henry VIII’s annulment of his first marriage and England’s ensuing break from the Roman Catholic Church, the nature of her death ensured that she would become a focus of examination, intrigue and scrutiny. This fascination is, in part, fuelled by limited primary source materials, particularly from Boleyn’s perspective; there is an accepted, familiar narrative of her life that is defined by landmark events, however we cannot know precisely how she experienced these events. The reasons for her death are unclear because conclusive evidence confirming either her guilt or her innocence is yet to be uncovered. This combination of fascination and ambiguity means that Anne Boleyn is an apt case study for a consideration of the tensions between history and fiction that appear in all historical narratives. In recent decades, postmodern historiography has highlighted the literary qualities of histories, and scholars such as Hayden White have drawn attention to the narrativisation, emplotment and characterisation that occur in both fictional and non-fictional histories. The role of the historian as author—rather than as objective observer—has been integral to such scholarship. This study examines ten twenty-firstcentury historical narratives, encompassing a range of historical writing, including academic histories, popular biographies, historiographic metafiction and historical fiction. In spite of variations in style, audience, genre and veracity, each of the focus texts constructs both a characterisation of Boleyn and a narrative of her life. A close textual analysis of these narratives reveals that there are representational techniques and practices that are shared by the authors, regardless of their claims to authenticity and accuracy. Thus, the thesis rejects the apparent disjuncture between fictional and non-fictional histories on the basis of their capacity to relate truth, and argues that these texts should each be considered examples of historical writing.

Abstract:
The majority of infants acquire their native language relatively fast, yet the trajectory of their acquisition varies from one child to another. This is the case for example for the rate of vocabulary growth but also for some early speech perception abilities. Research studies conducted in psycholinguistics over the last two decades started to explore these individual differences, seeking to specify the factors that predict these differences on the one hand, and to further understand how these differences impact later language acquisition, including vocabulary, on the other hand. These studies focused mainly on the second year of life. The aim of this thesis is to complement this research, focusing on the first year of life. It aims to better characterize individual variability in three early speech processing abilities, to specify some of the predictors of these abilities, and to assess the impact of individual variability on vocabulary acquisition at 12 months. The speech processing abilities we investigated are: (1) audiovisual speech processing at 4 and 8 months, and more specifically infants' relative attention towards the eyes or the mouth of a talking face; (2) word form segmentation from a continuous speech stream, based on transitional probabilities between syllables at 8 months; and (3) familiar word form recognition at 12 months. The predictors that have been investigated are related to the quantity of parental speech input and to infants' early production skills. To this end, daylong recordings were collected longitudinally in infants' natural environment at 4, 8 and 12 months of age, using a device wore by the infants at home. Three quantitative measures were extracted from these audio recordings: (1) the number of words heard by the infants, (2) the number of conversational turns between a parent and his child and (3) the number of infants' vocalizations. Moreover, a qualitative measure of (4) babbling (inventory of produced sounds) was collected at 4 and 8 months of age through parental questionnaires. Regarding the links between input and early abilities, the results show that more parental input at 4 months is related to better auditory speech processing skills (word segmentation at 8 months and word form recognition at 12 months) but not to audiovisual speech processing. In addition, more parental input at 8 months is related to more receptive vocabulary at 12 months. Furthermore, the quantity of conversational turns is not linked to the abilities investigated here, but more conversational turns is linked to more expressive vocabulary at 12 months. Regarding the links between production and early abilities, the amount of vocalizations appears to only play a minor role in early abilities (limited to audiovisual speech processing) and is not linked to vocabulary at 12 months. However, a richer babbling repertoire at 8 months is linked to auditory (better segmentation skills) and audiovisual speech processing skills (less interest in the mouth) at the concurrent age and, to a lesser extent, to word processing abilities at 12 months. A more complex babbling at 4 and 8 months is linked to more vocabulary in production at 12 months. Lastly, regarding the predictors of early vocabulary, the results show that infants who look the most towards the mouth and who have better speech segmentation skills at 8 months have more vocabulary in production at 12 months. Taken together, our results help us highlight the existence of very early links between the amount of parental input, speech processing skills and vocabulary. These results also emphasize the importance of investigating infants' early production skills together with speech processing skills and vocabulary acquisition during the first year of life

Abstract:
Abstract - This Dissertation was carried out bearing in mind the Seminars" American History" and “Literature and Cinema" both taught by Professora Doutora Maria do Céu Marques, who happens to be my Academic Tutor. This work focus on the ethnic minority Jews, because they contributed to weave the social tissue of the thirties (twentieth century), along with other minorities which helped President Franklin Delano Roosevelt build a new country after the New York Crash. We also focus on the sixties because of their cultural impact upon the seventies (twentieth century), when both films were shot and released: Annie Hall (1976) and Manhattan(1979), both filmed in New York.. The corpus of the work was divided into tree chapters: in the first one we try to give an historical and social background of the U.S.A. /also called America, in this work) and New York, mentioning the contribution of some Jews like Woody Allen’s parents, George Gershwin, among others in the WASP society. Woody Allen has never denied his Jewish roots but was born in New York, and considers himself an American with Jewish ancestry. He has original ideas about Judaism and the Jews in America as you will see in the second chapter – a small biography of the film director, writer, actor and musician Woody Allen . The third chapter deals with some aspects of the films Annie Hall and Manhattan and we chose them because of their autobiographical features upon Woody Allen´s life and his intellectual milieu and the city of New York during the seventies
