Abstract:
Anna Evgenievna Gluskina (1904–1994) is known as an outstanding translator of Japanese poetry, teacher and educator, expert on Japanese culture, author of numerous academic articles and monographs. There are many well-known publications devoted to her life, her research and poetic work. However, her activities as a museum Japanologist, as well as her contribution to the formation and description of the Japanese collection of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography RAS (MAE), are still little known and underestimated. Meanwhile, Anna Evgenievna's debut as a professional Japanologist is connected with her work at the MAE; she spent almost 9 years of her life in the museum (1925–1933). During her academic trip to Japan in 1928, she acquired over 700 pieces that characterize various aspects of traditional Japanese culture, for the museum: Shinto cult objects, a variety of theatrical accessories including marionette puppets and kageboshi shadow theatre items, numerous traditional agricultural implements and fishing gear, peasants’ costumes and agricultural instruments as well as about 400 photographs and negatives. All these items were organized into 7 material and 6 photographic collections; the descriptions were made by Anna Evgenievna at a very high professional level and are distinguished by great accuracy; each item is provided with a detailed attribution and ethnic designation supplied with its Japanese character writing and indication of the circumstances of their acquisition. By the early 1930s, Anna Evgenievna had fully established herself not only as a professional Japanologist, but ethnographer and museum researcher, too; however, the dramatic circumstances intervening into the life of the MAE in 1933 had interrupted her activities in this field.

Mogus, Asenata, and Sandra Gojani.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Popular literature is considered to be the most widely read genre in France and Iran. Pirzad and Gavalda are among the most read and translated contemporary writers. These authors belong to two very different worlds and cultures yet they managed to satisfy their foreign readers. Pirzad and Gavalda, like many other contemporary writers, place the character at the center of interests of their stories. They stage characters that are probable and representative of each individual of the society where they live. The protagonists of their novels are mostly women. Their status, characteristics and roles, as well as their inner worlds are developed and deepened over the course of history, in a simple and often dialogical style. The character is highlighted and the novel exists only through him. The ambition of these two novelists is also to give an outline of the social reality of their time. Although they write in the context of two different social and cultural conditions, the two authors represent the same concerns in their writings. Human relations, the woman and her situation in modern society and confrontation of man and woman constitute the essence of their stories. The contemporary feminine figure that Pirzad et Gavalda try to portray in the reader does not always conform to the stereotypical images of Eastern or Western women. Men also take on extraordinary dimension. The reader, sometimes surprised, sometimes satisfied, is constantly urged to renew the image of the woman

Abstract:

Niemann, Anna Magdalena. "Male and female consumers' knowledge, perceptions and use of clothing labels / Anna Magdalena Niemann (neé Krüger)." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4708.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and motivation Clothing labels concern the permanently attached labels as well as the temporarily attached labels known as hangtags that are found on clothing products. Clothing labels assist consumers when they are deciding whether or not to purchase clothing products, by providing product information and potential care instructions. Clothing labels are made up of two attributes, namely the physical nature of clothing labels in addition to the information on clothing labels. Adequate knowledge, positive perceptions and optimal use of clothing labels may result in satisfied consumers who make responsible and informed purchases. The aim of this study was subsequently, to determine male and female consumers’ knowledge, perceptions and use of clothing labels. The provision of clothing labels does not guarantee that consumers will read, understand or apply the information on clothing labels. Therefore this research is based on retailers’ assumption that the provision of informative clothing labels is sufficient to encourage the usage thereof and that all consumers understand and perceive the clothing labels as intended. Due to the lack of research that exists in South Africa in the field of clothing labels, it is not known whether consumers have adequate knowledge and positive perceptions of clothing labels and the information on them, and whether they use the labels optimally. Methodology The research design of this study was non–experimental, quantitative, exploratory, and descriptive. Questionnaires were used as the measuring instrument to collect the data. The study population included all the consumers in three municipalities in the North–West Province above the age of 18 years, male as well as female, who can read and who had purchased a clothing product some time from one of the selected stores. Data collection was undertaken in the Bonjana, Platinum and Southern district municipalities, which included, Rustenburg, Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom. A total of 304 usable questionnaires were obtained. Results and discussion On average 71% of the respondents had adequate knowledge of the information presented on clothing labels (excluding the care instructions) and 65.6% had adequate knowledge regarding the care instructions. Respondents perceived colours in general (79.9%), letter size (83%) and readability (77.7%) of information on clothing labels as positive. They found it very important that the information on clothing labels will not fade (68.8%), and that the positioning remains constant (78.8%), in addition to not showing (84.9%). Respondents perceived the indication of information on clothing as positive, regarding the fibre content (84.2%), country of origin (61.2%), size indication (89.5%) as well as additional information, such as applied special finishes (76.4%) and indication of eco friendly clothing (69.5%) and licensed trade marks (78%). Respondents sufficiently made use of the care instructions in words (68.1%) and symbols (63.2%) when purchasing similar items. More than half (56.9%) of the respondents used the indication of special finishes applied to clothing during the pre– and post purchasing phase. The indication of eco friendly clothing was used by the respondents (51%) for future reference and 63.5% made use of the licensed trademarks when purchasing similar products. In conclusion the results generally indicated that the respondents had adequate knowledge and positive perceptions of clothing labels, and made use of clothing labels before, during and after purchasing clothing products. Furthermore only small significant differences were found between male and female respondents’ knowledge, perceptions and use of clothing labels. It was established that relationships do exist between respondents’ knowledge, perceptions and use of clothing labels.

Full text
Abstract:
Owner-occupied housing is both a place to live and also the most important asset in many households’ portfolio. Accurately predicting of house prices is therefore of great interest to the general public. This paper aims to compare the housing price prediction accuracies of Hedonic Model (HM) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). In order to achieve this aim, two techniques’ prediction results were compared by using four performance criteria: RMSE, MAE, MAD, and Theil’s U statistic. This study uses the HM and ANNs to empirically determine the house prices in Turkey. HM is the standard technique for modeling the behavior of house prices over the past three decades and is based on micro economic theory. The non-linear relationship between house price and its determinants can be modeled by an ANN, so it is employed in this paper as an alternative method. Empirical results revealed that ANNs performed better than HM in house price predictions, indicating that ANNs could be useful for prediction of house prices. More clearly, the performance criteria from the ANNs are smaller than those from the HM by roughly 60-90%. For instance, the ANN model has about 77 percent lower RMSE, 91 percent lower MAE, 64 percent lower MAD, and 77 percent lower Theil’s U statistic than those of the HM.

Abstract:
This article documents a study on artificial neural networks (ANNs) applied to the field of engineering and more specifically a study taking advantage of prior domain knowledge of engineering systems to improve the learning capabilities of ANNs by reducing the dimensionality of the ANNs. The proposed approach ultimately leads to training a smaller ANN, offering advantage in training performances such as lower Mean Squared Error, lower cost and faster convergence. The article proposes to associate functional architecture, Pi numbers, and causal graphs and presents a design process to generate optimized knowledge-based ANN (KB-ANN) topologies. The article starts with a literature survey related to ANN and their topologies. Then, an important distinction is made between system behavior centered topologies and ANN centered topologies. The Dimensional Analysis Conceptual Modeling (DACM) framework is introduced as a way of implementing the system behavior centered topology. One case study is analyzed with the goal of defining an optimized KB-ANN topology. The study shows that the KB-ANN topology performed significantly better in term of the size of the required training set than a conventional fully-connected ANN topology. Future work will investigate the application of KB-ANNs to additive manufacturing.

Abstract:
This paper investigates induction motor fault detection and diagnosis using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The ANN techniques include feedforward backpropagation networks (FFBPN) and self organizing maps (SOM), used individually and in combination. Common induction motor faults such as bearing faults, stator winding fault, unbalanced rotor and broken rotor bars are considered. The ANNs were trained and tested using dynamic measurements of stator currents and mechanical vibration signals. The effects of different network structures and the training set sizes on the performance of the ANNs are discussed. This study shows that, while the feedforward ANNs give satisfactory results and the SOMs can classify the type of motor fault during steady state working conditions, using a combination of SOM and FFBPN techniques yields superior fault detection and diagnostic accuracy. In addition, incipient motor fault detection has been investigated. The above results show that improved induction motor maintenance strategies may be possible through the use of comprehensive on-line induction motor condition monitoring and fault diagnosis systems.

Abstract:
Abstract Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) and Tensile Strength (TS) are among the essential rock parameters required and determined for rock mechanical studies in Petroleum Engineering. However, the determination of such parameters requires some laboratory experiments, which may be time-consuming and costly at the same time. In order to estimate these parameters efficiently and in a short period, some mathematical tools have been used by different researchers. When regression tools proved to give good results only in the limited range of data used, machine learning methods proved to be very accurate in generating models that can cover a wide range of data. In this study, two machine learning models were used to predict the UCS and TS, Support Vector Regression optimized by Genetic Algorithm (GA-SVR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The results were discussed for both uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength in terms of coefficient of determination R2, root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean average error (MAE). First, for the case of UCS, values of 0.99 and 0.99, values of 3.41 and 2.9 and values of 2.43 and 1.9 were obtained for R2, RMSE and MAE for the ANN and GA-SVR, respectively. Second, for the TS, the same analogy was followed, a coefficient R2 of 0.99 and 0.99, RMSE values of 0.41 and 0.45 and MAE values of 0.30 and 0.39 were obtained for ANNs and GA-SVR, respectively. The next step was to assess these models on a different dataset consisting of data obtained from Bakken Field in Williston Basin, North Dakota, United States. The models showed excellent results comparing to the correlations they were compared with, outperforming them in terms of R2, RMSE and MAE, giving the following results for ANN and SVR respectively, R2 of 0.93, 0.92, RMSE of 9.54, 11.22 and MAE of 7.28, 9.24. The resultant conclusion of this work is that the use of machine learning algorithms can generate universal models which reduce the time and effort to estimate some complex parameters such as UCS and Tensile Strength.

Abstract:
Reliable engine and emission models allow for an online monitoring of commercial gas turbine operation and help the plant operator and the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to ensure emission compliance of the aging engine. However, model development and validation require fine-tuning on the particular engines, which may differ in a fleet of a single design type by production, assembly and aging status. For this purpose, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) offer a good and fast alternative to traditional physically-based engine modeling, because the model creation and adaption is merely an automatized process in commercially available software environments. However, ANN performance depends strongly on the availability of suitable data and a-priori data processing. The present work investigates the impact of specific engine information from the OEM’s design tools on ANN performance. As an alternative to a strictly data-based benchmark approach, engine characteristics were incorporated into ANNs by a pre-processing of the raw measurements with a simplified engine model. The resulting ‘virtual’ measurements, i.e. hot gas temperatures, then served as inputs to ANN training and application during long-term gas turbine operation. When processed input parameters were used for ANNs, overall long-term NOx prediction improved by 55%, and CO prediction by 16% in terms of RMSE, yielding comparable overall RMSE values to the physically-based model.

Abstract:
In order to operate plants fueled with biomass in an optimum manner, it is important to create thermodynamic models of the same. However, these kind of plants are hard to model by “traditional” methods such as heat and mass balance programs. Some difficulties are the large inertia of some sub-systems, as well as the fact that many important parameters are not constant nor unequivocally determined. For this reason, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), a technique within the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), have been chosen as the main candidates to build an adequate model of these kind of plants. Data from an existing plant is used to train, validate and test the ANNs. More specifically, an ANN-based model of the biomass-fired boiler of the plant is implemented which is able to catch the non-linear behavior of the system at different operational conditions with a satisfying accuracy. A conclusion of this work is that ANNs can be considered as a useful tool to model the biomass-fueled boiler. Several sensitivity analyses and pruning of unnecessary inputs were carried out. For instance, some input parameters revealed themselves to not have significant influence on the accuracy of the ANN-model, while in physical modeling they are to be considered as essentials. One possible outcome of ANN modeling is to gain insight about which sensors could be excluded from the existing sensor configuration without lowering the reliability of the plant. A good plant model will supply the personnel in the control room with information necessary to make reliable predictions and arrive at correct decisions. This can lead to a considerable reduction of operational and maintenance costs and improved performance of the plant.

Abstract:
At present, large-eddy simulations (LES) of turbulent flames with multi-species finite-rate kinetics is computationally infeasible due to the enormous cost associated with computation of reaction kinetics in 3D flows. In a recent study, In-Situ Adaptive Tabulation (ISAT) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methodologies were developed for computing finite-rate kinetics in a cost effective manner. Although ISAT reduces the cost of direct integration considerably, the ISAT tables require significant on-line storage in memory and can continue to grow over multiple flow-through times (an essential feature in LES). Hence, direct use of ISAT in LES may not be practical, especially in parallel solvers. In this study, a storage-efficient Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is investigated for LES application. Preliminary studies using ANN to predict freely propagating turbulent premixed flames over a range of operational parameters are described and issues regarding the implementation of such ANNs for engineering LES are discussed.

Abstract:
Consumers have different ideas of what makes a design stylish. Some consumers may want a sporty looking car, while others may want a rugged looking or a fuel-efficient looking car. Can computers learn what it means to satisfy those style-based goals and use this knowledge to generate designs that target style-based goals in design? An experiment was conducted where participants were asked to rate computer generated car profiles for sportiness, ruggedness, beauty, and fuel efficiency. This survey data is used as an indicator of consumer stylistic form preferences, and was used to train Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for each of the four rating categories. The resulting ANNs were then inverted using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) in order to generate new designs that elicit targeted style goals from consumers.

Abstract:
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are receiving increasing attention due to their biological plausibility and the potential for ultra-low-power event-driven neuromorphic hardware implementation. Due to the complex temporal dynamics and discontinuity of spikes, training SNNs directly usually suffers from high computing resources and a long training time. As an alternative, SNN can be converted from a pre-trained artificial neural network (ANN) to bypass the difficulty in SNNs learning. However, the existing ANN-to-SNN methods neglect the inconsistency of information transmission between synchronous ANNs and asynchronous SNNs. In this work, we first analyze how the asynchronous spikes in SNNs may cause conversion errors between ANN and SNN. To address this problem, we propose a signed neuron with memory function, which enables almost no accuracy loss during the conversion process, and maintains the properties of asynchronous transmission in the converted SNNs. We further propose a new normalization method, named neuron-wise normalization, to significantly shorten the inference latency in the converted SNNs. We conduct experiments on challenging datasets including CIFAR10 (95.44% top-1), CIFAR100 (78.3% top-1) and ImageNet (73.16% top-1). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art works in terms of accuracy and inference time. Taverna, Kristin. Vegetation classification and mapping of land additions at Richmond National Battlefield Park, Virginia: Addendum to technical report NPS/NER/NRTR 2008/128. National Park Service, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2294278.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2008 and 2015, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage produced vegetation maps for Richmond National Battlefield Park, following the protocols of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) – National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Program. The original 2008 report was part of a regional project to map and classify the vegetation in seven national parks in Virginia. The 2015 report was an addendum to the original report and mapped the vegetation in newly acquired parcels. Since 2015, the park has acquired an additional 820 acres of land within 12 individual parcels, including the 650 acre North Anna unit. This report is an addendum to the 2008 and 2015 reports and documents the mapping of vegetation and other land-use classes for the 12 new land parcels at Richmond National Battlefield Park, with an updated vegetation map for the entire park. The updated map and associated data provide information on the sensitivity and ecological integrity of habitats and can help prioritize areas for protection. The vegetation map of the new land parcels includes eighteen map classes, representing 14 associations from the United States National Vegetation Classification, one nonstandard, park-specific class, and three Anderson Level II land-use categories. The vegetation classification and map classes are consistent with the original 2008 report. Vegetation-map classes for the new land parcels were identified through field reconnaissance, data collection, and aerial photo interpretation. Aerial photography from 2017 served as the base map for mapping the 12 new parcels, and field sampling was conducted in the summer of 2020. Three new map classes for the Park were encountered and described during the study, all within the North Anna park unit. These map classes are Coastal Plain / Outer Piedmont Basic Mesic Forest, Northern Coastal Plain / Piedmont Oak – Beech / Heath Forest, and Southern Piedmont / Inner Coastal Plain Floodplain Terrace Forest. The examples of Coastal Plain / Outer Piedmont Basic Mesic Forest and Southern Piedmont / Inner Coastal Plain Floodplain Terrace Forest at North Anna meet the criteria of size, condition, and landscape context to be considered a Natural Heritage exemplary natural community occurrence and should be targeted for protection and management as needed. New local and global descriptions for the three map classes are included as part of this report. Refinements were made to the vegetation field key to include the new map classes. The updated field key is part of this report. An updated table listing the number of polygons and total hectares for each of the 28 vegetation- map classes over the entire park is also included in the report. A GIS coverage containing a vegetation map for the entire park with updated Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata was completed for this project. The attribute table field names are the same as the 2008 and 2015 products, with the exception of an additional field indicating the year each polygon was last edited.

Multi-Dimensional Infiltration and Distribution of Water of Different Qualities and Solutes Related Through Artificial Neural Networks. United States Department of Agriculture, January 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2009.7695865.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The project exploits the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to describe infiltration, water, and solute distribution in the soil during irrigation. It provides a method of simulating water and solute movement in the subsurface which, in principle, is different and has some advantages over the more common approach of numerical modeling of flow and transport equations. The five objectives were (i) Numerically develop a database for the prediction of water and solute distribution for irrigation; (ii) Develop predictive models using ANN; (iii) Develop an experimental (laboratory) database of water distribution with time; within a transparent flow cell by high resolution CCD video camera; (iv) Conduct field studies to provide basic data for developing and testing the ANN; and (v) Investigate the inclusion of water quality [salinity and organic matter (OM)] in an ANN model used for predicting infiltration and subsurface water distribution. A major accomplishment was the successful use of Moment Analysis (MA) to characterize “plumes of water” applied by various types of irrigation (including drip and gravity sources). The general idea is to describe the subsurface water patterns statistically in terms of only a few (often 3) parameters which can then be predicted by the ANN. It was shown that ellipses (in two dimensions) or ellipsoids (in three dimensions) can be depicted about the center of the plume. Any fraction of water added can be related to a ‘‘probability’’ curve relating the size of the ellipse (or ellipsoid) that contains that amount of water. The initial test of an ANN to predict the moments (and hence the water plume) was with numerically generated data for infiltration from surface and subsurface drip line and point sources in three contrasting soils. The underlying dataset consisted of 1,684,500 vectors (5 soils×5 discharge rates×3 initial conditions×1,123 nodes×20 print times) where each vector had eleven elements consisting of initial water content, hydraulic properties of the soil, flow rate, time and space coordinates. The output is an estimate of subsurface water distribution for essentially any soil property, initial condition or flow rate from a drip source. Following the formal development of the ANN, we have prepared a “user-friendly” version in a spreadsheet environment (in “Excel”). The input data are selected from appropriate values and the output is instantaneous resulting in a picture of the resulting water plume. The MA has also proven valuable, on its own merit, in the description of the flow in soil under laboratory conditions for both wettable and repellant soils. This includes non-Darcian flow examples and redistribution and well as infiltration. Field experiments were conducted in different agricultural fields and various water qualities in Israel. The obtained results will be the basis for the further ANN models development. Regions of high repellence were identified primarily under the canopy of various orchard crops, including citrus and persimmons. Also, increasing OM in the applied water lead to greater repellency. Major scientific implications are that the ANN offers an alternative to conventional flow and transport modeling and that MA is a powerful technique for describing the subsurface water distributions for normal (wettable) and repellant soil. Implications of the field measurements point to the special role of OM in affecting wettability, both from the irrigation water and from soil accumulation below canopies. Implications for agriculture are that a modified approach for drip system design should be adopted for open area crops and orchards, and taking into account the OM components both in the soil and in the applied waters.

Pilemalm, Sofie.

Full text
Abstract:

Kløcker Larsen, Rasmus, and Maria Boström. Stockholm Environment Institute, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2021.008.

Full text
