On 16 January 1641 Anna Temple wrote from Broughton, Oxfordshire, to her daughter in Sussex:God is exceeding good to us every way, both body and souls, and hath done wonderful things among us already, and gives us hope of more, and that we shall see idolatry and superstition rooted out; and God’s ordinances set up in the purity and power of them. Altars begin to go down apace and rails in many places, and yours must follow if it be not down already. Let us labour to be thankful and continue our prayers, hold up our hands that Israel may prevail.

Abstract:
The triptych from Łekno was painted in 1588 and commissioned by one of the five sons of Duke Philip I of Wolgast of the Griffin dynasty. The painter, who signed the work with the initials CS (and may perhaps be identified as Christoff Schreiber), used graphic patterns in the composition of biblical scenes and included crypto-portraits of Griffin rulers in the depictions of the Last Supper and Crucifixion. After Anna of Stettin married Ulrich III of Mecklenburg, another (also unknown) artist repainted the face of one of the apostles into a high-quality portrait of the duke of Mecklenburg.

Abstract:
The article recalls a source from 1638 which has hitherto not been referred to in the subject-matter literature, concerning the history of two chapels at the cathedral in Vilnius: the chapel of St. Casimir founded by King Zygmunt III, and the chapel of the Immaculate Conception which was furnished as a burial chapel by Bishop Eustachy Wołłowicz (lit. Eustachijus Valavičius). The source is a diary from travels from Lublin to Vilnius (14 November –26 December 1638) written by Carmelite nuns when going to a new monastery founded byStefan Pac (lit. Steponas Pacas) and his wife Anna Maria Ancilia née Rudomina–Dusiacka (lit. Ona Marija Ancilia Rudomina-Dusiackaitė). The memoirs were written by a nun, Mary Magdalene (Anna Żaboklicka) who described various aspects of their journeys as well asa visit to the Vilnius Cathedral organised by the Pac family. The nuns were particularly impressed by the chapel of St. Casimir. Thanks to the fact that the nun described the chapel in detail, it was possible to reconstruct the subjects of some paintings by Bartłomiej Strobel, and to additionally interpret several facts connected with the appearance of the altar with the reliquary of St. Casimir. Even though the description of the chapel of Bishop Eustachy Wołłowicz is not as detailed, it should be underlined that by inviting the nuns there, the Pac family wanted to emphasise their kinship with the monarch of Vilnius, who was commonly highly regarded.

Abstract:
In Tairia, at a distance of about 10 km from Monemvasia, is a small complex of two Byzantine churches, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and Ag. Anna. Each has a simple one-aisled plan covered by a barrel vault with an intermediate arch. Wall paintings exist in both churches dating from the twelfth, the thirteenth century, and later. The church of the Assumption, or Theotokos, is older and could be dated to the tenth century and thus identified with the church mentioned in a contemporary source, the Life of St. Theodore of Kythira. Ag. Anna imitates the plan of the older church and seems to have occupied the place of earlier service buildings. Built in, on the top of the altar table in the church of the Assumption, is a marble slab with a completely preserved Greek inscription of the Roman period, consisting of five lines which cover the whole surface of the slab and commemorate the dedication to the deities of the Imperial cult (Θεοί Σεστοί) and to a πόλις, the name of which is not known, of a makellon by three Roman citizens out of their own funds. The most probable date for the inscription seems to be the second century AD, but, even though makella existed in few Peloponnesian cities, neither the polis where the establishment was erected is known, nor can the dedicators be safely identified.

Abstract:
Ceramic panels produced since 1960 in the “Kamionka” cooperative in Łysa Góra are one of the most versatile materials used for architectural decorations. They made it possible to create small “ceramic accents” as well as large-scale and monumental works. Compositions made of Łysa Góra panels, at first found mainly in secular buildings, started to appear in church architecture from the mid-1960s. The earliest was the cladding on the facade of the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Piaseczno by Krzysztof Henisz in 1965. The article presents realisations found in Polish and foreign churches. Most of the discussed compositions were created in the period when new rules of organisation resulting from the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council were introduced into church interiors. This important theme is also highlighted in the article. The last mentioned work – the altar wall in Harmęże by Anna Praxmayer – was created in the 21st century, just before the definitive demise of the factory in Łysa Góra.

Abstract:
Paintings by François Roëttiers (1685–1742) delivered in 1732 for the side altars of the Church of St John of Nepomuk in Krahulčí near Telč, whose builders and patrons were Count Franz Anton of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn and his wife Marie Anna of Halleweil, are the unique contribution in the Czech Lands of this painter of Flemish origin, who later settled in Vienna. However, the artist of the original image on the high altar of the same church, St John of Nepomuk adoring the crucifix, now missing, is not this painter. The original Baroque painting was replaced in 1890 by the current painting by the academic painter and restorer Čeněk Neumann. Contemporary records of his painting refer to it as a copy of the original Baroque painting. However, the distinctive visages of St John of Nepomuk and the attending angels evoke strikingly the work of the famous Viennese painter Daniel Gran (1694–1757), whose first contacts with clients in the Czech Lands are documented in the late 1720s. Apart from several indirect indications, Gran's presumed authorship is significantly supported by the finding of a Baroque graphic sheet with the figure of John of Nepomuk adoring the crucifix, whose very specific rendered face evidently corresponds to the matching part of Neumann's copy of the Baroque original. Johann Ernst Mansfeld (1739–1796), the creator of the graphic transcript, identified Daniel Gran as the author of the original which was used.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Now Church History’, wrote John Henry Newman in 1843, ‘is made up of these three elements—miracles, monkery, Popery’, so that anyone sympathetic to the subject must sympathize with these. Much the same, however, could be said of Christian art. The young Southey on a visit to Madrid stood incredulous before a series of paintings depicting the life of St Francis. ‘I do not remember ever to have been so gready astonished’, he recalled. ‘“Do they really believe all this, Sir?” said I to my companion. “Yes, and a great deal more of the same kind”, was. the reply.’ The paradox was that works of genius served the ends of a drivelling superstition, a dilemma resolved in the 1830s by the young Augustus Pugin, who decided that the creation of decent Christian architecture presupposed the profession of Catholic Christianity. The old Protestant hostility to graven images was in part a revulsion from that idolatrous popish veneration of the Virgin and saints which had inspired frescos, statues, and altar-pieces in churches and monasteries throughout Catholic Europe; but what on earth did a modern educated Protestant make of the endless Madonnas, monks, and miracles adorning the buildings which he was expected as a man of cultivation to admire? At the very least, he required a sympathetic instruction in the meaning of the iconography before his eyes, and some guidance about its relation to the rest of what he believed. The great intermediary in this process was Ruskin; but there was at least one odier interpreter of Catholic art celebrated in her day, Mrs Anna Brownell Jameson, whose most popular works, Sacred and Legendary Art, Legends of the Monastic Orders, and Legends of the Madonna, told the Englishman what he could safely think and feel amid the alien aesthetic allurements of Catholicism.

Abstract:
The article, for the first time in academic research, puts and comprehensively considers a unique phenomenon of picturing seven images stylized under the lily of the prince’s tridents of Volodymyr on the frescoes and graffiti of St. Sophia of Kyiv, which elucidates the time of the cathedral construction and its prince-builder. They are singled out as separate compositions, “inserted” in the center of large narrative scenes of the religious and secular nature. Four tridents of Volodymyr are present in four frescoes of the vestry, decorated with scenes from the cycle of the Virgin; two more are present in the fresco of the north stair tower, which is part of the secular cycle that tells about the conclusion of dynastic marriage between Prince Volodymyr and Byzantine Princess Anna. Two inverted tridents of Volodymyr, drawn by his warriors after the death of the prince, were found in the graffiti of St. Sophia. They appeared around 1017 after Yaroslav’s capture of the Kyiv throne. Volodymyr’s trident on the walls of St. Sophia is a sign of his ownership of the temple and the glorification of the prince in the eyes of contemporaries and descendants. On the wall of the St. Michael’s altar of the cathedral there is a trident of Iziaslav Yaroslavych, similar to the lilies on the frescoes of the cathedral, which in the conditions of feud marked the right of this prince to Kyiv and St. Sophia, its heart. Iziaslav’s trident appeared here during the difficult period between 1068 and 1078. The prince’s tridents did not appear in the graffiti of Sophia spontaneously, as their authors were inspired by the urgent needs of life at that time. Like the oldest dated graffiti on its walls, mosaics, and frescoes, Prince Volodymyr’s tridents confirm the inference that St. Sophia was founded by Volodymyr the Great in 1011, and during his reign the cathedral was built and decorated with mosaics and frescoes. Instead, Yaroslav’s tridents were not found on the walls of St. Sophia.

Abstract:

Conventional overcurrent protection systems are often not sensitized to the occurrence of high impedance faults, because these currents have a low amplitude. This type of disturbance causes damages to the ulilities, as well as can cause deaths of people and animals. Therefore, different identification methods of high impedance faults in electric power distribution systems have been proposed. The main difficulty found by these methods is due to noise interference on the signal, as well as the low fault overcurrent level. Therefore to search for efficient and reliable method to identify high impedance faults, which does not present the drawbacks found in the methods proposed in the literature, an innovative method is proposed that minimizes the noise interference on the signal, and uses characteristics statistics present on the signals with high impedance fault to identify them, and thus to differentiate them from other phenomena present in the electrical systems. Specifically, the method uses analysis of cyclostationary processes to extract cyclic autocorrelation information from the samples of the signals of interest by calculating the cyclic spectral density function. From this information, we can obtain descriptors that allow to classify at a later stage the faults of high impedance. Results indicated that the method is robust to noise and efficient in terms of correct classification rate of high impedance fault events, as well as the method does not emit false alerts to the system.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
To examine the intersection of religion and ethnicity among Mexican immigrants, this volume takes readers into the vibrant neighborhoods of central Santa Ana, California, a Mexican-majority metropolis with high rates of religious participation. Ethnic Mexicans have traditionally been characterized by their religiosity, and have historically been marked as ethno-racially distinct from the white majority. On the one hand, this volume investigates whether Mexican ethnicity is indeed a cohesive organizing principle that continues to mark Mexicans as distinct. On the other hand, the volume examines the mechanisms of religion that sustain or alter in-group understandings of ethnicity. To highlight the mechanisms that shape ethnic identity, the volume takes a comparative approach, juxtaposing the experiences of Catholic and evangelical Mexican immigrants, the two largest religious groupings in the city. Through five years of participant observation within formal and informal Catholic and evangelical spaces in Santa Ana, and based on in-depth interviews of fifty parishioners, this book argues that religious affiliations set Catholics and evangelicals along diverging trajectories of ethnic identity construction. In particular, the author argues that while Mexican Catholics ritualize a sense of their ethnic past, Mexican evangelicals posit a rupture with the past rooted in conversion. Catholics and evangelicals’ diverging understandings of ethnic community and of ethnic identity manifest as distinct practices of ethnic space.

Abstract:
Hartley, Julia Caterina. Iran and French Orientalism. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780755645626.

Abstract:
New translations of Persian literature into French, the invention of the Aryan myth, increased travel between France and Iran, and the unveiling of artefacts from ancient Susa at the Louvre Museum are among the factors that radically altered France’s perception of Iran during the long nineteenth century. And this is reflected in the literary culture of the period. In an ambitious study spanning poetry, historiography, fiction, travel-writing, ballet, opera, and marionette theatre, Julia Hartley reveals the unique place that Iran held in the French literary imagination between 1829 and 1912. Iran’s history and culture remained a constant source of inspiration across different generations and artistic movements, from the ‘Oriental’ poems of Victor Hugo to those of Anna de Noailles and Théophile Gautier’s strategic citation of Persian poetry to his daughter Judith Gautier’s full-blown rewriting of a Persian epic. Writing about Iran could also serve to articulate new visions of world history and religion, as was the case in the intellectual debates that took place between Michelet, Renan, and Al-Afghani. Alternatively joyous, as in Félicien David’s opera Lalla Roukh, and ominous, as in Massenet’s Le Mage, Iran elicited a multiplicity of treatments. This is most obvious in the travelogues of Flandin, Gobineau, Loti, Jane Dieulafoy, and Marthe Bibesco, which describe the same cities and cultural practices in altogether different ways. Under these writers’ pens, Iran emerges as both an Oriental other and an alter ego, its culture elevated above that of all other Muslim nations. At times this led French writers to critique notions of European superiority. But at others, they appropriated Iran as proto-European through racialist narratives that reinforced Orientalist stereotypes. Drawing on theories of Orientalism and cultural difference, this book navigates both sides of this fascinating and complex literary history. It is the first major study on the subject.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 examines the hagiography of local holy woman Anna Guerra de Jesús who migrated to Guatemala’s capital in the late seventeenth century. While the early modern Catholic ideal of feminine piety prized enclosure, obedience, and virginity, Anna was neither nun nor virgin, but rather a poor abandoned wife and mother. And although Church decrees clearly required actively religious laywomen to live in cloistered communities, Anna became an independent beata (laywoman who took informal vows) and Jesuit tertiary. This chapter explores Anna’s lived religious experience as a poor migrant and abandoned wife and mother, her engagement with female mysticism and devotional networks, and her alliances with powerful priests and religious orders. It also places Anna’s story within the context of late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century Santiago de Guatemala, particularly urban demographic shifts and social tensions, as well as movements for spiritual renewal and enthusiastic lay female piety.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Latinx religious identities through the lens of change and continuity. For evangelicals, the experience of religious conversion becomes a marker of evangelical identity. Some Catholics, too, have experiences of religious renewal which closely approximate religious conversion. For evangelicals, conversion experiences are closely linked to rupturing with the past. For Catholics, religious renewal is a way to solidify ties to the past, both religious and ethnic. Essentially, Catholics have a stronger sense of continuity with the past and evangelicals tend to emphasize discontinuity with the past. Ultimately, the author addresses the dilemma of how experiences of religious renewal and religious change relate to ethnic identity maintenance. Understandings of the past matter for ethnic identity because they structure the collective memories that people have at their disposal to bolster a sense of shared history. Conversion experiences also shape how people understand themselves in relation to ethnic spaces.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses how Anna Kavan’s narrative experiment began with writing the encounter with psychiatric treatment and the asylum, and focuses on her 1940s texts Asylum Piece (1940), I Am Lazarus (1945), and The Horse’s Tale (1949). Mindful of how developments in mid-century psychiatry both reflected and effected wider changes in subject formation and social relations, it draws evidence from her article ‘The Case of Bill Williams’ (1944) to demonstrate that her writing of psychiatric treatment was political rather than purely subjective in focus, strongly anticipating the work of the British anti-psychiatry movement. Examining Kavan’s experimental narrative strategies to formally represent the existential experiences of depression, psychiatric treatment and incarceration, it explores how these factors subtly alter the reader’s relationship to the text, its narrators and protagonists. It offers close readings of Kavan’s asylum stories, especially her representations of psychiatric drugs, and explores the frequent association of her writing with that of Franz Kafka.

As Anna Nogar shows in her essay, “Junípero Serra’s Muse,” María de Jesús de Ágreda’s influence on Serra was profound, and her writings and seemingly countless bilocations to New Spain, where she preached to Indians in their own language, were never far from the minds of Franciscan missionaries in New Spain. As Nogar argues, Serra and other missionaries carried copies of her writings to Alta California when they embarked on the colonization of the region and were spurred on by their deep faith in her revelations.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas turbine combustion chambers contain numerous small-scale features that help to dampen acoustic waves and alter the acoustic mode shapes. This damping helps to alleviate problems such as thermoacoustic instabilities. During computational fluid dynamics simulations (CFD) of combustion chambers, these small-scale features are often neglected as the corresponding increase in the mesh cell count augments significantly the cost of simulation while the small physical size of these cells can present problems for the stability of the solver. In problems where acoustics are prevalent and critical to the validity of the simulation, the neglected small-scale features and the associated reduction in overall acoustic damping can cause problems with spurious, non-physical noise and prevents accurate simulation of transients and limit cycle oscillations. Low-order dynamical systems (LODS) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) are proposed and tested in their ability to represent a simple two-dimensional acoustically forced simulation of an orifice at multiple frequencies. These models were built using compressible CFD, using OpenFOAM, of an orifice placed between two ducts. The acoustic impedance of the orifice has been computed using the multi-microphone method and compared to a commonly used analytical model. Following this, the flow field downstream of the orifice has been modelled using both a LODS and ANN model. Both methods have shown the ability to closely represent the simulated dynamical flows at much lower computational cost than the original CFD simulation. This work opens the possibility of models that can dynamically predict the flow through, for instance, acoustic liners, dilution ports and fuel injectors in real engines during thermoacoustic instabilities without having to mesh and simulate these small-scale features directly. Such models may also assist in the accurate simulation of flame quenching due to cooling flows or the design of effusion cooled aerodynamic surfaces such as nozzle guide vanes (NGVs) and turbine blades.

Abstract:
Isolated cases of lupus anticoagulants (LA) in association with procainamide have been reported. This study was done to estimate the frequency of LA in patients taking procainamide. Two groups of patients were evaluated: Group A: 110 hospitalized patients (84 males, 26 females, ages 51-78, mean age 74.3) and Group B: 80 ambulatory patients (54 males, 26 females, ages 36-89, mean 67.5 years). The latter group of patients was on this drug for a period of two-five years, while the former group hadbeen on drug at least two full days. All patients were screened with baseline laboratory data including activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) which were performed using Auto APTT® and Simplastin® on a Coagulamate X2® (General Diagnostics/Organon Teknika). Patients taking drugs known to alter the APTT and PT were excluded. All patients were followed with daily (hospital patients) or weekly (ambulatory patients) APTT and PT. Prolongation of the APTT of 5 sec or PT of 3 sec over baseline was considered as a positive LA screening test. Patients with a positive screening test were further evaluated with tissue thromboplastin inhibitor assay (TTI), platelet neutralization procedure (PNP, anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) and blood serology (RPR). In Group A. 11 out of 110 (1096) developed prolonged APTT while on procainamide . Of these, 9 developed abnormal TTI and 2 had positive PNP. The ANA was positive (titers of 1:320-1:2560) in 10 patients with the only positive RPR test, being in the patient with the highest ANA titer. In Group B, 12 out of 80 (1596) developed prolonged APTT, 11 had positive TTI. The ANA titer was elevated in all positive cases, although one patient's titer was 1:30. The PNP was positive in 1/12. All blood serologies were negative in this group. The difference in incidence between Groups A and B may reflect longer exposure to drug in the latter group. This difference is not statistically significant. This study indicates that the incidence of procainamide-induced lupus antocoagulant is between 10-1596 when the APTT (or PT) is used as a screening test. The TTI and ANA seem to have equal sensitivity in this syndrome when taking this drug. The failure of the PNP to be sensitive to LA may be due to the minimal prolongation of the APTT arbitrarily chosen as representing a positive screening test.

Abstract:
Geologic time is a way of contextualizing the material processes of the Earth within its long history. The geologic time scale divides the long history of the earth in eons, eras, periods and epochs, not separately, but in relation to each other depending on what emerges from the analysis of stratigraphic data and the different levels of the crust of the earth.Recently, studies related to territory and landscape have introduced the idea that the current Holocene epoch that began 11,700 years ago has ended and has been replaced by a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene, or, 'the era of human race'. To confirm or reject this hypothesis, we started from two conceptual categories of landscape: the terrestrial landscape and the constructed landscape. We apply this research using the case study of Catania, Sicily. The soil of the city of Catania is built is through both the intense work of man – in the last 40 years going back to the seventeenth century and to antiquity with the ancient Greeks – and, through substantial geological activity – by the many volcanoes and frequent earthquakes over the centuries. The analysis is defined by a sectioning and dissection of the historical stratigraphy of the ground of Catania. It reveals how the form of the city and landscape of Catania has undergone exceptional change and mutation evolving slowly in geologic time, more so than any other European city. It is therefore an interesting object of study to examine the relationship between landscape, time and use.
