Abstract:
Pension policies are a major topic of political debate, whose discussions concentrate on both the instruments and general objectives of the system of pension provision. This volume includes research on different problems and reform alternatives in this respect, focusing especially on state pensions. Its chapters deal—among other issues—with the role of basic pension schemes within the state pension system, the link between work and income in old age, the treatment of care work in pension systems and the development of pensions in times of demographic change. Three chapters add a comparative perspective. The authors are researchers at public or non-profit universities and research institutes. With contributions by Gerhard Bäcker, Florian Blank, Martin Brussig, Judith Czepek, Susanne Drescher, Johannes Geyer, Arthur Kaboth, Ute Klammer, Tim Köhler-Rama, Patricia Frericks, Jutta Schmitz-Kießler, Camille Logeay, Anita Tiefensee, Erik Türk, Tobias Wiß, Josef Wöss and Rudolf Zwiener.

Ogden, Stephen R. Averroes on Intellect. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192896117.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book on the Muslim philosopher Averroes (Ibn Rushd) provides a detailed analysis of his (in)famous unicity thesis—the view that there is only one separate and eternal intellect for all human beings. It focuses directly on Averroes’ arguments, both from the text of Aristotle’s De Anima and, more importantly, his own philosophical arguments in the Long Commentary on the De Anima. Ogden defends Averroes’ interpretation of Aristotle’s DA III.4–5 (using Greek, Arabic, Latin, and contemporary sources). Yet, the author insists that Averroes is not merely a “commentator” but also an incisive philosopher in his own right. Ogden thus reconstructs and analyzes Averroes’ two most significant independent philosophical arguments, the Determinate Particular Argument and the Unity Argument. Alternative ancient and medieval views are considered throughout, especially from two important foils before and after Averroes, namely Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā) and Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas’s most famous and penetrating arguments against the unicity thesis are also addressed. Finally, Ogden considers Averroes’ own objections to broader metaphysical views of the soul such as Avicenna’s and Aquinas’s, which agree with him on several key points (e.g., the immateriality of the intellect and the individuation of human souls by matter), while still diverging on the number and substantial nature of the intellect. The central aim of the book is to provide readers a single study of Averroes’ most pivotal arguments on intellect, consolidating and building on recent scholarship and offering a comprehensive case for his unicity thesis in the wider context of Aristotelian epistemology and metaphysics.

Peters, Stefan, ed. Gewalt und Konfliktbearbeitung in Lateinamerika. Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783845298597.

Abstract:
Latin America is puzzling: Politicians often celebrate Latin America as a peaceful region. However, their slogans conflict with the reality of everyday life there. The region is characterised by a high level of violence and for years has consistently recorded one of the highest incidences of violence globally. Nevertheless, Latin America is also a place where innovative conflict resolution mechanisms take place. This book aims to contribute to analysis of the concurrence of widespread violence and innovative approaches to conflict resolution. It adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and highlights current dynamics based on single-case and comparative studies as well as conceptual discussions. Lewis, Marilyn A., Davide A. Secci, Christian Hengstermann, John H. Lewis, and Benjamin Williams. ‘Origenian Platonisme’ in Interregnum Cambridge: Three Academic Texts by George Rust, 1656 and 1658. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198807025.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to contribute to our knowledge of what is known as ‘Origenian Platonist moment’ by analysing English translations of three Latin academic texts by George Rust, with annotations to the two longer ones, written in 1656 and 1658 while he was a fellow of Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge: Messias in S. Scriptura promissus olim venit (The Messiah promised in the Holy Scripture came a long time ago); Act Verses, a souvenir printed broadsheet containing two poems, Resurrectionem e mortuis Scriptura docet nec refragatur Ratio (Scripture teaches the resurrection from the dead, and reason does not contradict this) and Anima separata non dormit (The soul, separated from the body, does not sleep); and Resurrectionem è Mortuis S. Scriptura tradit, nec refragatur Ratio (The Holy Scripture tells of the Resurrection of the dead, nor does reason oppose it). The two 1658 texts formed part of what was perhaps the most public exposition and celebration of Origenian Platonisme in Interregnum Cambridge.

Full text
Abstract:
Psychosozial-Verlag, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.30820/9783837929423.

Abstract:
Barraca Mairal, Javier, Alberto García Gómez, and Amparo de Jesús Zárate Cuello, eds. Bioestética: Reflexiones en torno a la fundamentación. Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18359/9789585103160.

Full text
Abstract:

Fraiture, Pierre-Philippe. Past Imperfect. Liverpool University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781800348400.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines French and Francophone intellectual history in the period leading to the decolonization of sub-Saharan Africa (1945-1960). The analysis favours the epistemological links between ethnology, museology, sociology, and (art) history. In this discussion, a specific focus is placed on temporality and the role ascribed by these different disciplines to African pasts, presents, and futures. It is argued here that the post-war context, characterized, inter alia, by the creation of UNESCO, the birth of Présence Africaine and the prevalence of existentialism, bore witness to the development of new regimes of historicity and to the partial refutation of a progress-based modernity. This investigation is predicated on case studies from West and Central Africa (AOF, AEF and Belgian Congo) and, whilst adopting a postcolonial methodology, it explores African and French authors such as Georges Balandier, Cheikh Anta Diop, Frantz Fanon, Chris Marker, Joseph Ki-Zerbo, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Alain Resnais, Jean-Paul Sartre and Placide Tempels. Past Imperfect analyses the legacies of the ‘long nineteenth century’ and the difficulty encountered by these authors to articulate their anti-colonial agenda away from the modern methodologies of the ‘colonial library’. By focussing on issues of intellectual alienation, this book also demonstrates that the post-WW2 period foreshadowed twenty-first century debates on extroversion, racial inequalities, the decolonization of history, and cultural (mis)appropriation.
