Full textThe moral sense of the working relation between men and animals is an essential stake in the contemporary redefinition of the activities of breeding, more particularly industrial systems of animal production. Breeders and workers are facing new social expectations, such as sparing animals sufferings, and moral interrogations on the legitimacy of the humans to kill animals in order to feed themselves. In industrial systems, the destruction of economically unprofitable animals (referred to as "euthanasia") represents a large part of the workers’ activity, and raise the question of their autonomous moral judgment. But the ethical theories of animal protection that became highly influential do not take a look at the subjective moral experience of men and women facing the killing of their animals, whether for euthanasia or food production. This dissertation leans on the theoretical frames of moral sociology and the French psychodynamics of work, as well as on empirical studies on French breeders and Quebec workers in pig production. It demonstrates that the sense given by these actors to their working relation with animals has a moral dimension, which is precisely deteriorated under the influence of industrial forms of work organization. The practice of the euthanasia requires a virtuous moral disposition: courage. In industrial systems this virtue degrades in the adoption of virile behaviours. Raising animals is showing them gratitude, by giving them “the good life” which recognizes them as beings who give life to human people. In industrial systems this particular exchange of gifts is corrupted

Full textAcute episodes of animal mortality had severe impacts on past societies, with lasting economical, sanitary and social consequences. They remain however largely undocumented, in particular in archaeology, where the millions of animal victims described in historical texts appear to have left no material evidence. This dissertation thus strives to explore this discrepancy and to demonstrate that not only is it possible to identify archaeological deposits of mass animal mortality, but that it is also possible to diagnose the specific cause of the deaths. Theses aims are addressed by an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on methods and data from the fields of archaeology, history and veterinary science, and leading to the development of two methodological tools. The first tool allows the identification of animal mass mortality deposits through a flow chart based on objective archaeological criteria. The second presents as a protocol allowing the differential diagnosis and those of the main causes for animal mortalities in that time and place. Selected diagnostic hypotheses are then tested by targeted analyses. This allows us to identify fifty-one archaeological animal deposits probably resulting from mass mortality events in the bibliographical record, and to carry out a multi-criteria analysis of the resulting corpus in a diachronic and a species-specific perspective. Six ovine assemblages dating from the Roman period to the Modern period are then selected for an in-depth archaeological and osteological study. Likely diagnostic hypotheses are identified through our protocol in five cases out of six, one of which is confirmed by the paleoparasitological identification of the suspected pathogen

Full textCorsica is a French Mediterranean island marked by strong human and animal activities within different biotopes. Among these biotopes, the most outstanding are the wetlands. Within the Corsican territory, seven categories of wetlands have been counted, ranging from temporary wetlands such as ponds and temporary estuaries to large permanent areas such as coastal lagoons. These areas are key areas for human (agricultural, tourist, recreational) and animal (agriculture, watering, resting) activities. Due to their characteristics, these habitats are important in public health by their role in the proliferation and circulation of pathogens and their vectors. In the context of Corsica, the sanitary importance of wetlands is all the more important due to the insular context in the Mediterranean, which makes these areas points of resting for animal migrations such as avifauna. This favorable context for the research of pathogens in groups of animals and their vectors in Corsica wetlands was the target in our study. It focused on three groups of animals. The first one is the wild mammals where we focused on the wild boar. The second group is that of the animals of the corsican breeding. The third and last group is the avifauna. During our study, a total of 601 ticks were collected. They are composed of 4 different genera: Dermacentor spp. (D. marginatus), Hyalomma spp. (Hy. marginatum and Hy. scupense), Ixodes spp. (I. acuminatus/ventalloi, I. arboricola/lividus, I. frontalis, and I. ricinus), and Rhipicephalus spp. (Rh(Bo). annulatus, Rh. bursa, and Rh sanguineus s.l.). Among these genera, infestation preferences were observed, as for the genus Dermacentor for wild boar, the genus Rhipicephalus for cattle and the genus Ixodes for avifauna. In addition to the ticks collected, 37 loose flies of the species Ornithomya biloba were collected from migratory avifauna. This is their first identification on the Corsican territory. Using a high throughput real-time micro-fluidic PCR tool (BioMarkTM dynamic arrays, Fluidigm Corporation, USA), a total of 34 species and 11 genera of bacteria, parasites and viruses were searched for in the three target animal groups. In addition, Usutu and West Nile viruses were tested in avian samples. A total of six pathogen genera were detected in ectoparasites and animals: three bacterial genera (Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Rickettsia), two parasite genera (Babesia, Trypanosoma) and one viral genus (Flavivirus). Among these different genera, some species have been identified for the first time in Corsica as it is the case for: Rickettsia helvetica in avifauna ticks, Ehrlichia chaffeensis in sampled ticks and birds and Anaplasma capra in sheep farms. The presence of some pathogens was also confirmed in wetlands such as bacteria of the genera Rickettsia in wild boar and cattle ticks, Anaplasma in sheep and cattle farms, Babesia in wild boar and cattle ticks as well as in wild boar populations, Trypanosoma in cattle populations and West Nile virus in avifauna

Full textThe development of the livestock sector in the past century undergone a strong intensification. The current heterogeneity of livestock areas in France may have arisen from a spatial differentiation of intensification process. Different degrees of disconnection between livestock and land have resulted in contrasted levels of performance and impacts across areas. To date, a lot of research effort has been directed at measuring environmental impacts and economic performance of livestock systems at the farm level. Insufficient attention has been paid to the three dimensions of sustainability and to trade-offs among them. Existing livestock heterogeneities across areas also deserve more research. An approach that enables connecting livestock to land and resources, at regional level, could bring novel insights on the role of livestock in use and transformation of resources. The goal of this PhD was to develop a holistic assessment of livestock areas using multimetric indicators encompassing positive and negative contributions. We compiled three databases at the department level: i) database 1 was related to socioeconomic, land use, and production characteristics of 88 French departments, within an extensive time frame (1938-2010); ii) database 2 included data on crop, fodder and livestock production for year 2010; iii) database 3 included measures of provision of cultural, environmental and social services for 60 departments. With the first database, we created a typology of intensification trajectories based on a multivariate approach. With the second database, we assessed the nitrogen metabolism of livestock areas, based on the material flows accounting (MFA) approach, from which we derived indicators of performance and impacts to study synergies and trade-offs. With the third database, we studied the influence of past intensification on the current provision of services by the livestock sector. A multivariate approach was used to assess how different rates of change in intensification variables determined contrasted levels of services. First, we showed that the intensification of the French livestock sector was spatially differentiated and based on four trajectories, ranging from extensive to intensive livestock areas, and from crop specialized to areas where livestock had a small share of national production. Livestock productivity and stocking rates had a 3 fold increase in intensive areas, whereas extensive areas had a 1.6 fold increase. Crop specialized areas lose more than half of their original fodder area, and tripled the average farm size and more than quadrupled their labor productivity. Non-dominated livestock areas lose 30% of initial livestock population, and half of their initial fodder area. Second, the study of synergies and trade-offs revealed that gains in efficiency and economies of scale, often compromised other dimensions, e.g. through increased environmental impacts. The spatial analysis of relationship between performance and impacts revealed two types of synergies linked to the type of impact, either land or product-based. Both of which were in trade-off. Third, we showed that the provision of services was spatially structured and based on three types of service bundles, determined by different rates of change in intensification variables. Changes towards grazing systems resulted in higher provision of environmental and cultural services, whereas changes towards intensive systems resulted in higher levels of social services; but this was achieved at the cost of environmental services. This PhD thesis furthered the understanding on the temporal trajectories of livestock sector across areas in France. This knowledge could help to improve livestock sustainability. Our work provided knowledge on the drivers that shaped current intensification patterns and the provision of cultural, environmental and social services. It could be used to examine options for desirable longterm changes of the livestock sector

Full textBacterial antibiotic drug resistance is a worldwide health issue affecting human, animal, and agriculture. Extended-spectrum bêta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E), mutidrug-resistant bacteria, are a main health priority for the South-western Indian Ocean (SWIO) composed of islands (i.e. Madagascar, Maurice, Mayotte, Les Seychelles, l’Union des Comores et La Réunion). The main objective of this PhD thesis was estimating the ESBL-E prevalence in the three « One Heath approach » compartments (human, animal, environment) in order to identify the main ESBL-E reservoir in IO. This prevalence was independently estimated for each compartment by a sectorial approach and by a holistic approach connecting all compartments spatially and temporally. Both approaches suggest that livestock could be the main ESBL-E reservoir in IO and point out permeability between these three compartments in Madagascar. If the idea of a main reservoir of ESBL-E in livestock seems plausible, its contribution to human colonisation could differ between SWIO territories. Indeed, human direct and/or undirect exposure to this reservoir could be reduced in high-income countries (i.e. Seychelles, La Réunion) but significant for low-income countries (i.e. Madagascar, Union des Comores). In the absence, or reduced application, of food safety, sanitation, and drinking water access, the exposure to ESBL-E from livestock could be substantial in SWIO low-income countries. Consequently, the relative contribution of livestock in human ESBL-E subsequent colonisation could be significant in low-income countries but currently understudied. Research on that topic should strengthen antibiotic drug resistance control measures in low sanitation contexts

Full textCommon husbandry practices that are carried out in cow-calf production are necessary, but some of these practices can cause pain or stress to animals. Data availability on how they are performed as well as the strategies that reduce the negative impact on animal welfare implemented in Quebec cow-calf operations are sparse. The objectives of this study were therefore 1) to describe how cow-calf producers perform common husbandry practices normally associated with pain and stress (calving management, castration, dehorning, animal identification, weaning, and euthanasia); 2) to assess the use of alternative strategies and pain mitigation practices as well as factors associated with their use; and 3) to determine if these practices are in compliance with the recommendations and requirements described by the Canadian guidelines. An online and paper-based bilingual questionnaire administered in 2019 evaluating on-farm practices carried out in 2018 was completed by 156 Quebec cow-calf producers from different regions. Overall, operations had a median of 36.5 adult cows. After an assisted difficult calving, 44.4% of producers reported having given pain mitigation at least to a cow or a calf. Band castration was the most used castration method (97.4%). More than half of respondents (62.5%) reported having > 75% of polled calves. The main dehorning method used by respondents was caustic paste (43.4%). A total of 39.7% and 16.4% of producers administered a pain mitigation drug to at least one of their calves undergoing dehorning or castration, respectively. No respondent reported the use of iron branding for cattle. Traditional abrupt weaning was the most reported weaning method (54.2%). Natural death from chronic disease or old age was the most common type of on-farm death in adult cows (40.9%). Less than a third of respondents euthanized at least one animal (28.8%) in 2018. The gunshot was the most reported euthanasia method (63.6%). As hypothesized, practices carried out were mostly in compliance with the Canadian beef industry guidelines. The use of pain mitigation practices and stress-reducing methods as well as timely euthanasia decisions represent the main shortcomings that should be addressed to improve the welfare of animals in Quebec cow-calf operations.
