Vincent, Patrick. Europe’s Discourse of Britain. Edited by Paul Hamilton. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199696383.013.41.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter proposes three moments in Europe’s discourse of Britain. The first, from the mid-eighteenth century up to 1793, coincided with a liberal and cosmopolitan wave of anglophilia which helped foster Romanticism in Germany. The second period, roughly until 1820, was divided between the radical republicans who viewed Britain as an enemy of democracy, the moderate liberal camp who appreciated Britain as perfectly balanced between tradition and modernity, and the conservatives who embraced Edmund Burke’s ideal of Britain as a stabilizing force within a reactionary European system. The third period may be identified with Britain’s post-Vienna renewed advocacy of liberty and progress, triggering a second wave of anglophilia that contributed to the development of liberal forms of Romanticism in France and across the continent. The chapter ends with Marxism, the rise of a far more radical European discourser.

Corns, Thomas N. Milton’s Global Reach. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198754824.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter traces the impact of Milton’s writing through the centuries and across the globe. It begins with the continental European responses to his Latin defences of the English republic, and illuminates the distinct nature of those responses by drawing on the reception of the works of Lucretius and Bunyan. It then addresses Milton’s impact in the English colonies of North America and his incorporation into a pantheon of proto-revolutionary thinkers. It traces a similar phenomenon in revolutionary France and concludes with some account of his discovery by anglophile and often modernizing readers in China, Japan, and Korea.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how Staël's analysis of the role of factions in the Revolution is better understood in the light of the final section of the Considerations, dedicated to England. Like her favorite Anglophile writers, Staël praised England's commercial achievements; its constitution; and its tradition of individual liberty, freedom of the press, and religious toleration. But what interested her above all was the functioning of English parliamentarianism and the nation's party system. All along she manifested great admiration for the Whig Party and its leaders: an admiration that was not affected by the pro-Bonapartist stand of Charles Fox's entourage, nor by the crippling divisions that wrecked the party during the French wars.

Colesworthy, Rebecca. Marcel Mauss and the Turn to the Gift. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198778585.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 1 takes a cue from recent anthropologists who have stressed the influence of Mauss’s socialism on his sociological work. Returning to Mauss’s The Gift, the chapter argues that what links his essay to the experimental writing of his literary contemporaries is not their shared fascination with the primitive, as other critics have suggested, but rather their shared investment in reimagining social possibilities within market society. Mauss was, as his biographer notes, an “Anglophile.” Shedding light on his admiration of British socialism and especially the work of Beatrice and Sidney Webb—friends of Virginia and Leonard Woolf—as well as competing usages of the language of “gifts” in the social sciences and the arts, the chapter ultimately provides a new material and conceptual framework for understanding the intersection of largely French gift theory and Anglo-American modernist writing.

Allen, Ray. Jump Up! Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190656843.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Jump Up! Caribbean Carnival Music in New York City is the first comprehensive history of Trinidadian calypso and steelband music in the diaspora. Carnival, transplanted from Trinidad to Harlem in the 1930s and to Brooklyn in the late 1960s, provides the cultural context for the study. Blending urban studies, oral history, archival research, and ethnography, Jump Up! examines how members of New York’s diverse Anglophile-Caribbean communities forged transnational identities through the self-conscious embrace, transformation, and hybridization of select Carnival music styles and performances. The work fills a significant void in our understanding of how Caribbean Carnival music—specifically calypso, soca (soul/calypso), and steelband—evolved in the second half of the twentieth century as it flowed between its island homeland and its burgeoning New York migrant community. Jump Up! addresses the issues of music, migration, and identity head on, exploring for the first time the complex cycling of musical practices and the back-and-forth movement of singers, musicians, arrangers, producers, and cultural entrepreneurs between New York’s diasporic communities and the Caribbean.
