Abstract:
The period between 1783 and 1829 was one of significant change for the Anglican Churches. It saw the creation of an episcopate for the colonies and the foundation of the first Anglican province beyond the jurisdiction of the crown, in the newly independent United States. In the United Kingdom, constitutional changes eroded the Anglican monopoly in Parliament. The Church continued to grapple with a mix of problems which hampered its parochial ministry, and new challenges from Evangelicalism within and increasingly numerous Nonconformists without. Anglicans in Parliament sought to legislate to control abuses and to finance expansion of the Church’s ministry. Beyond the sphere of parliamentary activity, Anglicans (especially but not exclusively Evangelicals) proved particularly willing to experiment with new forms such as lay-led voluntary societies as a means of reinvigorating the Church. The Anglican Churches emerged from these changes as much more diverse institutions than in the previous century.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the emergence and development of Anglican Evangelicalism from the early eighteenth century onwards. It argues that while Evangelicals have always harked back to the first, formative generations of their movement, this has tended to obscure the theological diversity, practical pragmatism, and fluid organization that characterized the new piety. What follows, then, examines the beginnings of an enduring movement, but it also outlines a distinct phase in its existence. The first section considers the gradual emergence of Evangelicalism as a distinct identity in the Church of England; the second, its ramification in clerical associations and among groups of prosperous laypeople; the third, its infiltration of metropolitan officialdom and provincial society via organized philanthropy and patronage. As well as mapping the networks that spread Evangelical influence, it explores the lasting tensions thus generated: above all, what did it mean to be both Anglican and Evangelical?

Abstract:
By virtue of its historical origins as well as its commitment to fundamental doctrines such as the Trinity, and the transformation of perspective as a result of ecumenism and the continuation of the Anglican Communion worldwide, Anglicans draw on an extraordinary range of resources both old and new. Reflection on scripture, saints both pre- and post-Reformation, and the willingness of present-day Christians to lay bare their own engagement with God result in a rich and demanding range of possibilities. The impact of liturgical reforms and revisions post Vatican II have resulting in the reordering of places and spaces for worship, increased sensitivity to ‘sacramentalism’ very broadly construed, attention to the arts in all their complexity, and in some cases in serious re-engagement with political and social life.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the applied aesthetics of Anglican worship. As a seventeenth-century development, with definitive roots in the sixteenth-century Reformation, as well as in the Western Catholic tradition, Anglican aesthetics is a complex interaction of all sorts of factors, theological, cultural, and historical, which at times make it appear contradictory, even dysfunctional. Beginning with the particular case study of the opening Eucharist of the 2008 Lambeth Conference, the chapter goes on to show how Anglican identity in worship has from its very beginnings been constantly evolving and responding to new contextual challenges. After discussing the importance of church music and hymnody and charting its development through the centuries, it moves on to describe the architectural shape of the liturgy which has also evolved along with changing patterns of worship. It concludes by suggesting that it will continue to evolve into the future in as yet uncharted ways.

Abstract:
The chapter begins by outlining the distinctive ecclesiology of the Anglican Communion and the structures of consultation that form its polity. Among the four so-called Instruments of Communion, the Conference of Bishops which originally met at the Archbishop of Canterbury’s palace at Lambeth, is selected for special consideration and set in the context of the conciliar tradition of the church, with its principles of constitutionality, representation and consent. The non-coercive but persuasive authority of the Lambeth Conference, at which the Archbishop of Canterbury presides, is related to the role of the episcopate in the church and finally the future of the conference is considered.

Gaffin, Jenny. Anglican Wisdom. Edited by Mark Chapman, Sathianathan Clarke, and Martyn Percy. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199218561.013.9.

Abstract:
The chapter focuses on the nature and character of Anglican wisdom, exploring this in the context of church structures, tradition, and truth. Drawing on a variety of different examples and contrasting wisdom with folly, it argues that, historically and in the present time, Anglican wisdom is rooted in its capacity, in the presence of God, to acknowledge and hold the complexity and contradictions of human life in all its fullness. Lacking the authority structures required to give a single definitive Anglican view on any given subject, wisdom in the churches of the Anglican Communion continues to emerge through an ongoing, collective, often fraught act of listening to God.
