Abstract:
This chapter explores Anglican ethical and ecclesiological responses to migration under such headings as hospitality to the stranger and justice. Following an historical discussion of Church of England responses to refugees, the chapter argues that two motifs—incarnate responsibility and strange grace—lie at the heart of Anglican moral responses to migrants today. It then discusses the way in which migration is calling the Anglican Communion to rediscover its ecclesiological identity as a ‘moving church’ or via ecclesiae, and presents an ethnographic glimpse of contemporary Anglican practices at San Pedro/St Peter’s in Salem, Massachusetts. This congregation embodies responsibility towards migrants, delights in strange grace, and enacts a dynamic understanding of church.

Abstract:
The churches of the Anglican Communion discussed issues of sex and gender throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. Arguments about gender focused on the ordination of women to the diaconate, priesthood, and episcopate. Debates about sexuality covered polygamy, divorce and remarriage, and homosexuality. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, these debates became intensely focused on homosexuality and were particularly fierce as liberals and conservatives responded to openly gay bishops and the blessing and marriage of same-sex couples. By the second decade of the twenty-first century, the sex and gender debates had become less acrimonious, the Anglican Communion had not split on these issues as some feared, but the ‘disconnect’ between society and the Church, at least in the West, on issues such as the Church of England’s prevarication on female bishops and opposition to gay marriage, had decreased the Church’s credibility for many.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the development of Anglicanism through mission and argues that mission is essential to the church’s existence and flourishing. It proposes that the church’s mission has two aspects: the deepening and revitalization of the lives of those already within the Christian community, and the extension of the Gospel beyond the boundaries of that community. Among the key issues covered are the mission in the Reformation era, Evangelicals and abolition of slavery, mission under colonialism, as well as specific regions such as India, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Madagascar, Quebec and Haiti. The chapter then considers the modern mission by discussing the Nigerian experience, the struggle against apartheid, and the rebirth of Chinese Christianity. The last section allows the reader to consider the mission beyond Anglicanism.
