Abstract:
AbstractIn the perennial discussions about Anglican identity some voices predominate more than others.L’Eglise Anglicane du Congois a small province with a modest voice in the Anglican Communion. This article looks at Congolese Anglican identity as articulated by its members and examines the way in which the formation of that identity emerges from local concerns as well as wider networks. It uses interviews with members to focus on the majority appreciation of ‘order’, as expressed in governance and ritual, and recent shifts in the discourses surrounding ‘order’ to engage with changes in the country. The article borrows the terms ‘translocal’ and ‘transnational’ from the social sciences to explore the overlapping relational identities that emerge and the multi-directional dynamics of Congolese Anglicans. It suggests that this approach may have wider implications for understanding Anglicanism.

Abstract:
AbstractDrawing on data from a survey conducted among 7,059 students aged 13–15 in England and Wales, this study examines parental and peer influence on church attendance among 645 students who identified themselves as Anglicans (Church of England or Church in Wales). The data demonstrated that young Anglicans who practised their Anglican identity by attending church did so primarily because their parents were Anglican churchgoers. Moreover, young Anglican churchgoers were most likely to keep going to church if their churchgoing parents also talked with them about their faith. Among this age group of Anglicans, peer support seemed insignificant in comparison with parental support. The implication from these findings for an Anglican Church strategy for ministry among children and young people is that it may be wise to invest in the education and formation of churchgoing Anglican parents.

AbstractBaptism is the sacrament that incorporates Christians into the Body of Christ; 99 percent of the church are laity. The proposed Anglican Covenant's emphasis on formal authority exercised by bishops and primates changes the relationships among all Anglicans, not just bishops. This change may run against a fundamental Anglican tradition of ongoing communal reflection that acknowledges that elements of church life change because they are no longer convenient or useful in particular locales. In adopting the Anglican Covenant, are we stating that traditional Anglican polity is no longer convenient or useful for the Provinces of the Anglican Communion, including the Episcopal Church?

Abstract:
The Anglican Communion, which unites forty-one local Anglican Churches, traditionally honors holy ascetics and heroes of the faith, among whom there are both saints glorified after the English Reformation and general Christian teachers and martyrs known to the Roman and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Some Anglicans honor the saints, turning to the One God with gratitude for certain examples of a great righteous life, and ask Christ to send down the same good deed. Other Anglicans, on the contrary, appeal to the saint directly, like Catholics and Orthodox Christians. By themselves, Anglican views are very specific and strongly dependent on a particular church movement (there are “parties” of Anglo-Catholics, Anglo-Orthodox, Anglo-Evangelicals, etc., who have their own opinions on this issue), however, among the Orthodox there is a common misconception that being a Protestant means unequivocally rejecting the cult of saints. In this article, the author reveals in detail to the Russian reader the peculiarity of the Anglican practice of veneration of saints and provides examples of the presence of prayer appeals to saints in modern Anglican practice, dispelling the popular misconception about the lack of veneration of saints and appeals to saints in the Protestant world.

Abstract:
The aim of this short paper is to examine whether and how canon law might be acknowledged as one of the instruments of Anglican unity. First, the study proposes that there are principles of canon law recognised by churches. These are rooted in the canonical tradition shared by churches of the catholic and apostolic tradition. Secondly, the following proposes that the profound similarities between Anglican legal systems indicate, as a matter of descriptive fact, what Anglicans share in common juridically. Together, the principles of canon law and the similarities between Anglican legal systems represent the common law of the Anglican Communion. Thirdly, the study addresses some methodological issues raised in ascertaining and formulating the canonical principles of the Anglicanhis commune. Finally, it suggests some reasons and justifications for an acknowledgement of the Anglican common law.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years the Five Marks of Mission have become the latest in a long series of mission ‘slogans’ in the Anglican Communion, but little attention has been paid to their origin or theological presuppositions. This paper traces the development of an Anglican definition of mission from the 1984 meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council, at which a four-fold definition was first put forth, to the present use of the Five Marks of Mission across many parts of the Communion. The strong influence of evangelical mission thinking on this definition is demonstrated, as is the contributions from African Anglican bishops. Anglican mission thinking has shifted from emphasizing pragmatism and coordination to providing a vision for the Communion to live into. Mission thinking has been a site of genuine cross-cultural interchange among Anglicans from diverse backgrounds.

Abstract:
The article describes the Ordinariates for Anglicans from the ecclesiological point of view. The publication of Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus created a new situation in the interconfessional relations and in the search for the unity of the Church. Firstly the Author explains what are the Ordinariates for Anglicans and what solutions contains the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus. In the second point of the article we find an analysis of an ecclesiological model created by the constitution Anglicanorum coetibus. While not being the return to the past method of gaining the unity of the Church by partial unions (i.e. so called “uniatism” or “unionism”) the Ordinariates offer to the conversing Anglicans the possibility of upkeeping their liturgical tradition. The Ordinariates also enjoy a large scale of independence in the frame of the Catholic Church. Alongside the bright spells there are also some shadows. The Author points at the major ecclesiological weakness of the construction called “Ordinariate”. The liturgical tradition of Anglicanism transferred to the Ordinariates is, in fact, deprived of its natural theological background, which is Anglican. That is why the solution offered by the Ordinariates one of the Anglican theologians called “the shortened version of Anglicanism”. The last point of the article is consecrated to the depiction of first Anglican reactions to the situation introduced by the apostolic constitution Anglicanorum coetibus. The most promising initiative is the establishment of so called “Anglican Communion Covenant”, which is designated to consolidate the Communion from inside, also by preventing the provinces from taking unilateral decisions leading to the breaks in the whole of the Anglican World.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the relationship between the Anglican and Russian Orthodox churches at the very end of the 19th century. The reasons why the Anglican — Orthodox dialogue received intensive development and significant theological content during this period are considered. Significant attention is paid to the mutual visits of the hierarchs of the two Churches, during which they discussed and agreed on numerous issues related to the rapprochement of the Anglican and Russian Orthodox Churches in connection with the prospect of planned interfaith unity. Emphasis is placed on the problem of recognizing the legitimacy of Anglican ordinations, which arose both due to the historical formation of Anglicanism and in connection with the peculiarities of the Anglican doctrine of the sacraments, particularly the sacrament of the priesthood. The author investigates the reasons why Russian theologians, who have carefully studied the historical, canonical and dogmatic sides of the issue, were forced at this stage to deny the Anglicans the recognition of the legality of their ordinations. In connection with this decision, the prospect of inter-church unity was postponed indefinitely so that Anglican theological thought could finally be defined in the sacramentology of the Anglican creed. At the same time, the dialogue between the two churches was not interrupted, but rather continued fruitfully in the 20th century.

Thomas, Stephen. "Newman and heresy : the Anglican writings." Thesis, Durham University, 1988. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6638/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the relationship between Newman's treatment of early Church heresies and his contemporary situation in the period up to 1845.Part I traces his view of heresy from the early Trinitarianism of its evangelical period and snows now It became a rhetorical tool in his defence of the Established Church, 1828-31, culminating in The Arians of the Fourth Century. His continuing use of analogies between Arianlsm and contemporary controversy is traced between 1832 and 1837, before an examination of the relation between rhetoric and politics in the years of Emancipation, Repeal and Reform (1829-32), and in the changed situation after 1832. Part II illustrates the use Newman made of his study of Sabellianism and Apollinarianism Ian Ism to describe 'liberalism', which he argued to be a heresy developing into an underlying Infidelity. His rhetoric was provoked by R.D.Hampden's view of Tests, and influenced by the example of his friend Blanco White's embracing of Unitarian ism in 1835. Newman's consideration, under the category 'Sabetlian', of a variety of systematic theologians arose out of a need to universalize Oxford controversies into an argument about 'rationalism' (Tract 73). He extended his critique both to aspects of Nicholas Wiseman's Roman Catholic apologetic, and, in his strictures upon H.H.Milman, to liberal Anglican historiography. Part III shows Newman's own past-present analogies turning Inwards upon himself in a parallel between his "Via Media' and Monophysltism. The relation of this analogy to his later reminiscences and to the revolution in his concept of orthodoxy and heresy in The Essay on Development, is considered. The modification of his general understanding of heresy, in the light of his new-found idea of development, is then related to his rhetorical use of specific heresies. The Conclusion assesses more theoretically the implications of Newman's rhetorlclzation of Antiquity and considers If there Is a fundamental coherence to his heresiology during the Anglican period.

Ro, Chul-Lai. "Towards the renewal of Anglican identity as communion : the relationship of the Trinity, Missio Dei, and Anglican comprehensiveness." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2008. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54801/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a new way of thinking about Anglican identity as Communion. Since that mission is to live in the life of communion, this thesis in turn suggests: 1) Different Anglican perceptions of Missio Dei have been the principal cause of the loss of Anglican confidence in its identity as Communion and, 2) The different perceptions stem from a tribal mentality with regard to the Trinity among Anglicans. Taken together, this thesis argues that a key to the renewal of Anglican identity as Communion is one of developing an alternative way of thinking about the Trinity. By way of illustrating Miroslav Volf's idea of 'Trinitarian identities,' this thesis suggests that 'the triune God's dynamic relationships' which express His liminal nature is the source for transforming Anglican tribal mentality. This liminality speaks of 'communion-in-mission' as a means to the life of the triune God's dynamic relationships, which enables different Anglican perceptions of Missio Dei to converge dynamically. This thesis broadens this connection to the life of the Anglican Communion itself in order to discover how such a renewal within its life might inform Anglican self-understanding. F.D. Maurice's understanding of comprehensiveness as 'eschatological liminality' encourages Anglican comprehensiveness to be the Anglican practice of communion-in-mission, namely an Anglican way to the life of the triune God's dynamic relationships. In bringing together the above threefold aspects of the life of communion, this thesis redefines Anglican identity as a communion which is patterned on the triune God's dynamic relationships and made concrete in a renewed understanding of Anglican comprehensiveness as eschatological liminality informing the Anglican Communion's approach to Missio Dei and, by implication, to communion-in-mission.

Deboo, James. "The Anglican Wordsworth : broadening a religious tradition." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.420487.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the relationship between William Wordsworth and the Anglican religious tradition, both in terms of the formative influence of Anglicanism over Wordsworth's life and work, and, reciprocally, in terms of the effects Wordsworth may have had on that tradition, during his lifetime and since. Widely-held assumptions of the poet's early secularism and radicalism versus late orthodoxy are examined and supported but problematised. Through a consideration of Anglican and other religious influences on the young poet, the dissemination of these influences later in Wordsworth's life as his commitment to the Anglican tradition grew, and the part played by the Wordsworth family in moulding the religious outlook of the poet and his work and its posthumous interpretation, the nature of Wordsworth's faith is interrogated. Through considerations of specifically, Wordsworth and the Reformation and Wordsworth's contributions to a later tradition of liberal theology, a contribution which sits counter-intuitively with the usual identification of Wordsworth as a conservative High Churchman, a profound contradiction inherent in Wordsworth's religious position will be isolated, and will be resolved by recourse to the application of contemporary, rather than Victorian, religious labels to Wordsworth's Anglicanism.

Abstract:
Rowan Williams, David Ford and others have drawn attention to the importance of the ‘informal theology’ of ordinary believers, its validity as representing genuine insights, and the risk of detachment that occurs if academic theologians do not take it into account. Jeff Astley has examined the phenomenology of informal theology (which he calls ‘ordinary theology’) and processes that have been and can be followed in examining it. Largely, however, he has not surveyed the actual content of believers’ informal theology. This thesis examines the most basic, yet profound, theist concept, that of ‘God’, in historical, academic theology since the Second World War, and in contemporary informal theology measured by an exercise in practical theology. The historical theology consists of a review of academic and popular writings by professional United Kingdom Anglican theologians (as they have taken into account logical positivism, human suffering and scientific insights). This review is presented according to a series of eight themes. The thesis then describes the preparation and execution of a survey of the understanding of God on the part of a sample of Angelican church-attenders in Winchester, carried out by questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, together with analysis of the results. Most importantly, the thesis then sets the results of this exercise in practical theology against the views of academic theologians, draws out areas of commonality and deviation, and offers a distinctive contribution in this respect. The writer’s thesis is that the informal theology of ordinary believers coincides in most ways with academic theology over fundamental issues of understanding God. The practical research contributing to this thesis have revealed many ordinary believers’ capacity to assimilate and hold a variety of views of God, and to do so in creative tension, sometimes despite paradoxes of apparent contradiction. The thesis sets out some proposals for further research and makes some recommendations as to how the findings within the thesis could inform practice in the Church of England. However, its distinctive contribution to scholarship lies in its relating the content of some informal theology to a wide spread of Angelican academic theology, and its finding considerable spiritual and theological insight within a sample of ordinary believers.

Abstract:
Abstract:
This paper outlines the work of the Centre for Innovation in Higher Education, which uses an educational laboratory model to advance the intersection of innovative research and teaching at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). This evidence-based approach aims to promote active, reflective engagement with research in teaching and learning; foster collaborative and interdisciplinary inquiry into pedagogic practice; and support the development of a dynamic, sustainable pedagogic research community at ARU. The Centre’s work also increases the visibility and calibre of pedagogic research at national and international level. This paper outlines a current research project being undertaken by researchers from the Centre and Anglia Learning & Teaching which explores the longitudinal impact of its writing retreat provision on participants’ writing practices and productivity, together with their perceptions of writing as a key element of the academic identity. This study is generating valuable original data about academics’ writing practices and perceptions. It will contribute to the understanding of this important topic at a theoretical level, as well as outlining practical means through which universities can foster long-term academic writing productivity leading to enhanced research impact.

Abstract:
This document is an output from the “Voices After Disaster: narratives and representation following the Kerala floods of August 2018” project supported by the University of East Anglia (UEA)’s GCRF QR funds. The project is carried out by researchers at UEA, the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, and Canalpy, Kerala. In this briefing, we provide an overview of some of the emerging narratives of recovery in Kerala and discuss their significance for post-disaster recovery policy and practice. A key part of the work was a review of reported recovery activities by government and NGOs, as well as accounts and reports of the disaster and subsequent activities in the media and other information sources. This was complemented by fieldwork on the ground in two districts, in which the teams conducted a total of 105 interviews and group discussions with a range of community members and other local stakeholders. We worked in Alleppey district, in the low-lying Kuttanad region, where extreme accumulation of floodwaters had been far in excess of the normal seasonal levels, and in Wayanad district, in the Western Ghats, where there had been a concentration of severe flash floods and landslides.

Integration of STI and HIV/AIDS with MCH-FP services: A case study of the Busoga Diocese Family Life Education Program, Uganda. Population Council, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1997.1005.

Full text
Abstract:
The Family Life Education Project (FLEP) was started in 1986 by the Busoga Diocese of the Anglican Church of Uganda with assistance from Pathfinder International. The project provides integrated MCH, FP, STD, and HIV/AIDS services to more than 500,000 individuals through 48 clinics and 162 trained village health workers (VHWs). Each clinic serves an estimated 11,000 people living in a sub-Parish. Each sub-Parish has a health subcommittee selected by the community that is responsible for hiring clinic staff, identifying VHWs, and mobilizing resources for clinic staff salaries. Data suggest that the program is reaching a large number of clients through the clinic and community-based approaches. The methodology used for the case study involved review of available data and reports, in-depth interviews with management team, modified situation analysis, and guided group discussions. As noted in this report, using simple rural-based health facilities and volunteer community-based workers to provide family planning and STD/HIV services using the integrated approach is possible, however considerable work must be done before the project can provide high-quality MCH/FP and STD/HIV services to every client using this approach.
