Full textThe different views of a face are often perceived in temporal sequences. This temporal view proximity may allow the visual system to organize facial information providing by each view. When processing a view sequence, the views may be integrated in a unified representation, or individually encoded and associated. We evaluated the integration process and the association process, by varying the duration of each view in a face rotation sequence. The view integration process requires the global distribution of attention over the view sequence, and thus, a rapid succession of the views. Conversely, the view association process requires the focalization of attention on each view, and thus, a slow succession of the views. We found better recognition of faces learned with a rapid view sequence (200 ms for each view) than with a slow view sequence (700 ms for each view), in favour of the view integration process. This speed effect is not explained by motion smoothness because recognition was also better for a view sequence than for a video sequence. In addition, we found viewpoint effects, which indicate that each view of the sequence does not equally contribute to the development of an integrated representation. The attention may heterogeneously distribute over the view sequence, allocating more weight to the views the closest to the views used for the recognition of the face. Finally, we evaluated hemispheric differences in normal participants and schizophrenic patients, by comparing sequences rotated around left and right three-quarter views

Full textThe thesis is about writing conceived of as a graphic system. A varied methodology is adopted in order to focus on problems relative to writing and on how writing is taught in the classroom. The subject is first approached historically in an attempt to reconstruct a definition of writing limited to that of a simple notation of sounds. Dating the invention of writing back 35000 years, in contrast to the conventional date that many specialists set at 35000B. C. , we have reconsidered prehistoric traces as a first graphic expression and a determining step toward modern written forms. From here we have shown that a writing is a mainly of iconic origin, a space constructed intelligently that the eye interrogates so as to attribute to it a significance independent of the phonic representation. Wanting to verify whether this new conception had influenced how writing is taught, we looked to two methods of experimentation : both questionnaires sent to primary school teachers working in the first year of scriptural teaching/learning, and also observation of classes involved in this activity. The publics concerned are : 1) French primary school teachers and their first year classes (A. F. ) for Arabic as a mother tongue, and fourth year classes (4ème A. F. ) for French as a foreign language. The result show that, scholastically, writing is still looked upon in its most restrictive conception linking it closely to the oral language, and that the exercises which prepare students to appropriate in have no really evolved for nearly a century. To remedy this situation we think that, without neglecting the oral, writing must first be liberated from it. In other words, it is indispensable to conceive of innovative scriptural exercises that are less constraining and more efficient, all the while taking into account the true and complex nature of writing

Full textEmotional facial expressions play an important role in social interaction by facilitating nonverbal communication of an emotional state. They are recognized in everyday life from different viewpoints, and not just from full face views. However, different viewpoints do not offer the same information on expressions. We therefore measured the performance, response speed and error rate, of participants who had to identify emotional facial expressions as quickly as possible from different viewpoints: full face, three-quarters, or profile. Profile views gave slower response times with static images, but not with videos, indicating that the dynamic nature of the expressions seen in the videos may compensate for poorer profile visibility. Performance was generally better with three-quarter views, regardless of the number of viewpoints used in an experiment, which may be because three-quarter views provide the most information on expressions. A positivity effect, i.e. the fact that a positive emotion such as happiness is recognized more quickly than a negative emotion such as anger, was found from full face and right three-quarter views, whereas a negativity effect (opposite effect) was found from left three-quarter views. The fact that the viewpoint affects the positivity effect is difficult to explain by a cognitive bias in favour of positive emotions, but rather by a greater saliency of the different emotions depending on the viewpoint. The viewpoint effects affecting left and right three-quarter views could be explained by hemispheric differences according to emotional valence: an advantage of right views for happiness linked to a left-hemisphere superiority, and, conversely, an advantage of left views for anger linked to a right-hemisphere superiority. However, this three-quarter asymmetry disappeared by reversing the images horizontally. Moreover, it was never observed for fear. Rather, these asymmetries may depend, at least partially, on motor asymmetry in facial expression only for certain emotions. In an experiment with older controls or patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, the advantage of positive emotions was also only found for certain viewpoints, which is against a socio-emotional hypothesis of a positive age-related advantage. As for altered performance for fear, sometimes mentioned in Alzheimer's disease, it was found here only for full face views, which amplifies a phenomenon already found in older control adults and younger adults. These viewpoint effects might be linked to perceptual effects reflecting a difficulty in extracting the important characteristics necessary to recognize certain emotions from different viewpoints. This 'angular' difficulty would depend on the type of emotion, and therefore perhaps on the location of the characteristic traits of each emotion, and it would increase with age, due to a perceptual decline. Finally, an experiment with models wearing facemasks showed that identifying facial expressions was more difficult when wearing a facemask, especially for older people, and especially in profile. Altogether, our results suggest that the use of viewpoints in emotional facial expression perception experiments is not only advantageous ecologically, but also from a theoretical and methodological standpoint
Blanvillain, Odile. "Représentation formelle de l'emploi de should en anglais contemporain, en vue d'un traitement automatique." Paris 7, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA070074.
Full textThe aim of this thesis is to propose a formal (metalinguistic) representation of the different uses of should, in modern english, within an utterercentered approach, and to examine how this study can contribute to a possible automatic processing of the modal, in context. Its aim is also to bring out the particular status of should in comparison with shall, must or ought to, for example, and to understand the interplay of epistemic and root modalities that allows should, in its "ambiguous" uses. It appears that the difference between should and shall, must or ought to is essentially qualitative. Besides, the different possible ambiguities in the interpretation of should can be explained, in each case, by the specific characteristics of its fonctioning (positive valuation, particularities of its deontic origin, etc. . ) concerning the contribution to a possible automatic processing, the bringing out of these characteristics can be of importance within a work of automatic comprehension of texts. But, on the syntactic point of view, on the contrary, it appears extremely difficult to determine automatically the value of the modal

Full textThis thesis is a study of the stylistic features of narrative point of view in the short stories of dylan thomas; it first tries to show how point of view can be established as being that of the referent of the subject of the verbs of mental process, that of the decitic centre, and that of the referent of the subject of speech acts. The second part is about the different means of expression of point of view, particularly as they are to be found in the information structure and the system of evaluation. Then, we have tried to study how all those elements combine in the various sorts of speech and thought representations, direct and free direct styles, indirect and free indirect styles. The third part deals with the relations between point of view and the reader ; how the reader becomes involved in reconstructing a meaning and a point of view, especially in the case of metaphor. Finally in the last part, we tried to put together all those elements and study the way they combine in three short stories from portrait of the artist as a young dog : " the peaches", "where tawe flows, and "one warm saturday", each being representative of a specific point of view, respectively sympathetic, distanced, and ambivalent

Full textFirstly, this research aims to outline a syntactic study of the wh-questions, and analyse aspects of wh-question formation in typologically two different languages: Arabic and English within the framework of Generative Grammar and Minimalist Approach. It will be shown and argued that in both languages, the wh-phrase, which is in initial position, is moved to [Spec, CP] and that wh-movement applies overtly.Secondly, the thesis attempts to discuss and analyse the translation of English wh-questions into Arabic by three machine translation systems using different methods of translation through different methods of evaluation. We describe a set of important problems related to linguistic differences between the two languages. These problems have great influence not only on the quality of the output but also on its acceptability. The evaluation of the output will help us to present a diagnostic information about where a given system succeeds or needs improvement, relative to its intended users and use based on the syntactic study of wh-questions, to provide a comparative information which allows identifying the best system with respect to the translation quality and performance, to specify through the analysis of the results of evaluation the sources of problems that are responsible for producing ill-formed translations and inadequate systems’ performance and finally to outline some recommendations that are useful for system’s designers and developers to overcome various linguistic and operational problems that might impede the translation process

Full textOur study concerns the language of tourism from a lexicographical perspective.Exploiting the web we realized a corpus ad hoc. This corpus is composed by about 10.000 texts in three languages (French, Italian and English), aligned using “Alinea”.Starting from terminological extraction, we analysed some collocations at the aim to create a trilingual and tri-directional glossary. We chose this subject according to the increasing importance taken from tourism economy in the world. Our study fields are thematic terminology, corpus linguistics and automatic language treatment. The first chapter presents the study field of our research. First of all, we introduced to corpus linguistics presenting the different categories of corpus and pointing out our attention on two main notions: representativeness and context. Therefore, we explained the link between Language for Special Purposes and tourism discourse as a Specialized Discourse. In the second chapter, we showed the trilingual thematic corpus we created during our researches. We described the main steps to create a corpus: collection of texts, cleaning and annotation. In this chapter, we gave a particular attention to the presentation of “Alinea”.Finally, the third chapter is a study of frequent collocations with the term “town” (ville). The annexes present the glossary as well as the methodological principals we followed in the redaction

Full textThis PhD. Analyses stance in the translations of noun complement clauses in legal texts. Chapter 1 presents the field of corpus linguistics for the investigation of bilingual corpora, the technicalities of corpus annotation and explains why parsed corpora, though desirable, are not as yet available for legal texts. We describe the tools available for linguists to investigate lexical and syntactic constructions and explain the specificity of our corpus, l'Acquis Communautaire, and its automatic morpho-syntactic labelling of individual words (Part of Speech tagging). Chapter 2 details the semantic aspect of our research questions by analysing the notion of stance and its consequences for the analysis of the head nouns. We outline previous research on these issues, in particular the typological approach adopted in (Kanté 2011). Our PhD. Seeks to ascertain the validity of such a typological approach based on general corpora i) for a specific corpus of a specific genre ii) for the kinds of head nouns that can be retrieved in a POS-tagged corpus. This is carried out in chapter 3, which also assesses the benefits and limits of POS-tagging for the retrieval of head nouns in a specialized corpus. When the distinction is made between relative clauses and complement clauses in the automatic tagging (as is the case for the tagset of the French part of the corpus), we analyse the reliability of this annotation by calculating the precision of the POST-tagging for this subtle grammatical distinction of the French que (the equivalent of that, being as well potentially a relative pronoun or a complementiser). Because the syntactic distinction between that as a relative pronoun and that as a complementiser is not encoded in the English tagset for that, we resort to an innovative n-gram approach for the retrieval of English head nouns. We have analysed the sequence determiner + Noun + that, establishing a list of n-gram "candidates" for head nouns. We show that the "noise" is impressive (as evidenced by the extensive annex) and discuss the limits of this adjacency approach. Chapter 4 questions the head noun and the complement clause as a possible locus of subjectivity. We show that subjectivity creeps in in supposedly neutral legal texts within the process of translations, investigating in turn the translation of head nouns typical of the legal genre, of their determiners and of the syntactic environment in which they appear. We try to point out regularities in these translation strategies, raising the issue of the translation of these linguistic objects as potential indicators or predictors of the source language - a recurrent issue in EU official texts

Full textMigration has long been researched but mostly focusing either on under-qualified labour from the South or conversely on the mobile elite, looking at this population's ability to adapt to different work procedures. This study considers the particular situation of British corporate expatriates living in the Toulouse region, specifically focusing on the lifestyle, consumption and socialisation of this particular component of the Toulouse population. It starts laying a theoretical framework relying on different ways of considering the status of the stranger and different acculturation theories. Then it analyses the British identity, namely a particular opening onto the outside world related to the United Kingdom's own multicultural origins, or its long colonial past, it emphasizes the particular attraction rurality has on the population and the rather traditional role given to women in the British society. This research also examines to what extent Toulouse is an international city able to welcome foreigners. But the main part of the study focuses on the situation of British corporate expatriates in Toulouse underlining the different structures offering products or services specifically targeting this population in the region. It relies on a substantial number of expatriate interviews to assess how these structures and services are used and how the expats socialise in Toulouse, drawing conclusions on their acculturation level and the factors influencing this acculturation. Finally, through many similarities noted with other studies, this research suggests that some of the behaviours observed in Toulouse are typical of corporate expatriation whatever the expatriates' home of host country, while others are typical of British expats corporate or not and wherever they live

Full textThe thesis is divided in four chapters. The first one describes the conquest of siberia, its colonization, the life of the pioneers through the four centuries of its history under the russian control, and the life of the other settlers as well as their customs. The second chapter deals with the evangelization led by the pietists, the mennonites, the baptists and the evangelical christians during the 19th century, and how the gospel penetrated and did spread in russia. The third chapter shows the emigration of the mennonites, the baptists and the evangelical christians in siberia. The mennonites did form colonies in the example of those established in ukraine and in the south of russia. The labor of the baptists and of the evangelical christians was mainly in the field of evangelism. The expansion was rapid after the revolution of 1917 until the purges of stalin in 1929. Then starts a very sad story, for according to pastor g. P. Vins- 22,000 pastors, evangelists, preachers and christian workers of the e. C. B. Churches died in the labor camps of the gulag, mainly in siberia. The difficulties of the e. C. B. That are mentioned are experienced by men, women, and children. The first section describes the difficulties of the believers which are: fines, house searches, arrests, interrogations, tortures, confessions, courts, convoy escorters, prisons, labor camps, living conditions, work, food and punishment. The second section deals with the situation of the wives of prisoners as they are facing difficulties; it mentions also the old ladies, and the wives with children. The third section speaks of the difficulties that the children of believers of non-registered e. C. B. Churches face in the ussr

Full textAfter centuries of stability, the XIXth was a period of deep change. In essence, the Catholic Church is beyond time, but by its existence, it is included in time. Incapable of any adaptation, Rome wanted to conserve its traditions, centralised power and authority, even in different political surroundings. Intellectual socially elite Catholics were aware of the adaptability of the early Church. Although they accepted the Catholic Dogma, they opposed Rome's rejection of modern principles of freedom and decentralisation as had always existed in England, and in France since 1789. In France, the "Liberal Catholics" were led by F. Dupanloup and C. De Montalembert, their views being expressed in "Le Correspondant". In England, a few Britisch thinking Catholics such as Sir John Acton and Richard Simpson fought for freedom in their review, "The Rambler". John Henry Newman was their reference and inspiration. Did these two groups works together ? Up to now, research has been carried out separately on each group. However, detailed examination of correspondence between members of the two groups has shown that they discussed and adopted the same attitudes and actions towards Rome and the diehard Catholics. These matters concerned the laity in the Church, ecumenical discussions and freedom of decision in Catholic schooling. Concerted action was carried out in answer to the intransigence encountered in the Malines Case, the Syllabus, the Loyson Case and the First Vatican Council

Full textThe English and French novelists, who live principally in town, where they find publishers and readers, are particularly interested in the representation of the town, and especially of the urban relationship. Since the years 1730, the novelists begin to be more realistic; they particularly describe the capitals and also show the development of the English spas. They describe the urban activities, but they privilege the civilization of leisure to the prejudice of the labor. Consequently, the lower classes are not very present in the novels and are idealized, when the idle noblemen are very numerous. An ideological vision of the town also appears, based on the opposition between the capital and the provincial town, and on the contrast between the city and the country

Full textThe main purpose of the thesis consists in describing the relationship between allegory and tautegory. At the end of the "enlightened age", tautegory means "symbol". A symbol is a sign characterized by its pregnancy, translucence and infinity of purport. The form of a symbol, as one can see in reading moritz and cileridge, is supposed not to be material. Yet, this is impossible, for each form must unfold in and bv some material, however thin it may be. Thus, one has to describe the antinomy of the symbol, in order to understand in what way an event can be said to be "symbolic". The problem is then to show how the concept of symbol or tautegory is necessary to a historical theory, and to point out how it makes it at the same time impossible to conceive what a singulat event really is. An event is always allegorical, it does not cease to be historical. A symbol in itself opens onto the eternity of an intuitive synchrony

Accounts given by Frenchmen, after their travel in England, and by Englishmen, after their Grand Tour, gave information about practices of lyric dramas in France and England in eighteenth century. This thesis is based on the study of political, economic and social contexts surrounding the time of genesis of these texts. Each author is presented through his circle of friends and his artistic and cultural acquaintances. They knew very well their contemporaries’ works which they quoted or mentioned in their own works. Being subject to prejudices of their time, these writers gave precious information about lyric practices and testified of cultural differences between both countries. Full textThe Lyve of Cryste is the english translation of a middle french translation made by Guillaume Lemenand of the latin Vita Christi by Ludolph of Saxony (ca. 1300 – 1378). The edition is based on the sole fifteenth-century manuscript witness, which has survived in two volumes, i. E. British Library, Ms. Additional 16609, and Edinburgh, University Library, Ms. 22. They both contain different chapters of the same manuscript copy. This doctoral thesis offers the first critical edition of the middle english translation. The edition itself of The Lyve of Cryste is preceded by an introduction, which contains, among others, the first detailled codicological description of the two manuscripts in which the The Lyve of Cryste survives. The text itself contains an apparatus listing all the editorial interventions, and a comparatif apparatus, which refers to the text of the french translation by Guillaume Lemenand. The editorial interventions are commented in the chapter of the ‘Commentaires'. This chapter also contains various observations and the identification of the quotations which occur in The Lyve of Cryste. The edition is supplemented with four tools : a glossary, an index of biblical quotations, an index of other quotations, and a glossary and index of proper names and places. The thesis also offers a brief study of the Lyve of Cryste as a translation, and a bibliography

The aim of this thesis is not only to examine the form of direct speech, but also what it reveals concerning how poets viewed speech and the place of its representation in narrative. The first section of the thesis tries to determine whether the characteristics traditionally attributed to direct speech in Old English poetry - a taste for formality to the detriment of characterization and the progress of action - are valid and whether they are equally represented in all poems. The second section is concerned with the nature of the voices represented through direct speech: to what extent they express a form of subjectivity (and what type of subjectivity) and what their status is, compared with the narrator's voice. Results show that, in Old English narrative poetry, direct speech is not conceived of as an object radically distinct from narrative, or as the expression of another voice and point of view within the narrative voice. Direct speech appears as an actualized form of narrative, a dramatic and didactic device, using the same vocabulary and the same point of view as the narrative

Full textAggressive driving is of prime importance in our society, nevertheless there is a lack of research in the area. Indeed, 1 to 2 in 3 serious accidents would be due to aggressive driving (Deffenbacher, 2001). As a consequence, focusing on this issue in both psychological and psychopathological areas appears of prime importance. The general aim of the Ph.d dissertation, divided in 4 studies, was to (1) to examine the role of motivation, anger, type of assault and personal history in the etiology of both transgressive and aggressive driving (2) to examine the possible existence of different profiles of aggressive drivers. The results of the fourth studies highlight how interesting and useful theoretical and practical researches of the etiology of aggressive and transgressive driving are. A double intervention is then warranted: preventive and rehabilitative

Full textLearning has long been the preserve of schools. But institutions are not the only places to learn. People learn throughout their lives and at all ages. We will hypothesise that the need to learn exists among older people. To present our research, we will establish a history of "learning" through the centuries until today. Then we will go through the maze of theories and processes for learning. This thesis will focus on the learning of English and will trace the language path of retired people living in a rural department: the Creuse. It will highlight the retiree's desire to learn and the means used to achieve this: participation in conversation workshops, meetings with native speakers, assiduous personal work, etc. This will enable us to change our view of old age and build a positive image at the peak of life

Full textSpecific mtCK-cardiolipin (CL) complexes were studied on biomimetic membranes by way of several complementary techniques. The shape of protein-lipids domains changes with CL acyl chain composition as visualized on Langmuir monolayer by Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM). MtCK promotes lateral organization within the monolayer when CL is present. Using Polarization Modulation Infrared Reflection Adsorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) we were able to show that mtCK α helix dipole moment orientation depends on CL acyl chains length and on the number of double bonds within these chains. MtCK-CL interaction with giant liposomes (GUVs) was also visualized using confocal microscopy with biphotonic excitation. In the presence of CL, mtCK has the capacity to induce the formation of clusters on the GUVs surface. It can also provoke vesicles clamping and give rise to membrane morphology changes. This phenomenon occurs with a membrane in a liquid phase with local and minimal changes in its fluidity as determined by laurdan and C-laurdan GP measurements. Results are discussed in view of previous results which indicate that, through its interaction with membrane, mtCK is involved in mitochondrial morphology. Laurdan is a fluorescent probe largely used to study membrane fluidity in several models. New lauroylnaphthalene derivative probes with a diversity of polar heads were synthesized and characterized in order to develop new tools for lipids membrane lateral organization studies

Full textAs soon as the works of Gustave Flaubert were translated into Chinese, Chinese readers immediately paid great attention to them. His philosophical thoughts, objectivity and accuracy in writing caused a resonance in Chinese literary circles of the time and profoundly influenced their writings. Chinese translator and novelist, Li Jieren, who was the first translator of Madame Bovary, admitted he was much inspired by the style of Flaubert in this novel. In 1935, ten years after the first translation of Madame Bovary, he began writing his masterpiece Ripples across stagnant water which has been considered by Chinese critics as the Chinese Madame Bovary. Astonishing similarities can be noticed between the two main characters from various aspects. Despite these similarities, Li Jieren’s novel is not just a simple rewriting of the French novel, for there are also many differences in the perspectives of the two women and especially in their fate. This thesis is focusing on the reasons that can explain the major differences in the outcome of each heroine’s story. First within the content of both novels, reasons based on elements differentiating the two women and on their social class. Then, studying at the author’s level, we will look at reasons from a cross-cultural perspective, such as the writing objectives, literary choices and living concepts of Gustave Flaubert and Li Jieren

Full text1.
From a situated perspective on cognition and conceiving writing as a socially and culturally mediated activity (Camps & Castelló, 1996; Candlin & Hyland, 1999; Lea & Stierer, 2000; Flowerdew & Peacock, 2001; Johns, 2002; Castelló, Iñesta & Gonzalez, 2008), we have conducted a comparative study of two cases focusing on the authentic task of research article writing in ecological conditions. Our specific objectives have been:
1. To identify, characterize and compare the regulation activities that writers implement while writing two research articles: one in Spanish as a first language (L1) and one in English as an International Language (EIL)
2. To know if L1 and EIL use has a differential impact on the activities writers implement while writing the research articles
3. To know if L1 and EIL use has a differential impact on the organization of information in the final versión of the articles
4. To analyze the relationship between the challenges that actívate the Regulation Episodes and the improvement suggestions made by the editors, members of the same discourse community
Data collection has implied the use of methodological instruments such as semistructured interviews, writing diaries, retrospective interviews, thinking case analysis, draft-comparison templates and recording the writing activity as it unfolds in the Word processor screen thanks to the Camtasia software. Moreover, we have used a unit of analysis, the Regulation Episode, that has allowed us to analyze in an integrated way the challenges or difficulties identified by the writers and the actions they have implemented to solve them. From the analysis of the data and the results obtained we the following conclusions can be derived.
Firstly, we have observed that writing activity regulation can take place at an explicit and at an implicit level. This result indicates, therefore, the need to reconsider the conceptualization of regulation as an exclusively explicit phenomenon. Our results also show that the challenges whose resolution implies the use of linguistic or metalinguistic knowledge seem to remain at a more implicit level tan those which have to do with writing process management.
Secondly, the results obtained show that writing activity regulation at a global or process level is related to a differential writing pattern for each writer (action-driven or text-driven), which is maintained both in L1 and in EIL, and of which writers appear to be only partially aware.
Thirdly, no important difference seems to appear between L1 and EIL writing processes, and those which do appear have to do with very specific and local challenges (intensive use of writing helps, and actions oriented towards the attainment of an adequate EIL formulation), and not related with global and writing process management issues.
Fourthly, the micro analysis has allowed us to know that the actions writers implement while writing the research articles obey specific communicative intentionalities and, among such intentionalities, it is important to underline that both writers pay attention to the expression of their voice in the text and the search for precision and clarity.
Finally, our results have allowed us to see the clear coincidence between the challenges which writers address in the explicit Regulation Episodes and the editors' suggestions for revision. This would show that writing process regulation is an activity which requires the negotiation between the habitual way of writing (the writing pattern), constructed through effective practice, and the particularities of the writing situation.

By their number and their dynamism, the societies of Maine-et-Loire contribute actively to the spreading of the amateur practice under the Third Republic. It seemed necessary to place the urban societies in their general environment. Maine-et-Loire has undeniable assets to assert itself as the centre of the "orphéonique" expression. Our reflection continues then by a historical and sociological presentation of the main instrumental societies of Angers, Cholet and Saumur. Yu, Shuwen. "Performance enhancement of organic photovoltaic cells through nanostructuring and molecular doping." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17150.
Full textThe present work mainly focuses on improving the performance of OPVCs by tailoring the donor-acceptor interface geometry and by tuning the electrical properties of interfaces with p-type molecular doping. Crystalline and uniform nanocolumns of pentacene (PEN) and diindenoperylene (DIP) were fabricated by glancing angle deposition (GLAD), forming an interdigitated donor/acceptor heterojunction with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and/or fullerene as the electron acceptor. The short circuit current of nanocolumn-based OPVCs increased significantly compared to planar heterojunction OPVCs made from the same materials. The performance improvement of OPVCs had been verified to be contributed decisively by the donor-acceptor interface area enlargement because of reduced impact of short exciton diffusion length in organic materials. P-type molecular doping as applied in polyfuran (PF) based OPVCs was investigated by using tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) as the dopant for various doping ratios. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) was applied to analyze the energy level shift with increasing doping ratio leading to the enlargement of the open circuit voltage in OPVCs, from 0.2 V to close to 0.4 V. Combining this observation with the results of doped polymer films, their morphology and absorption behavior, a net dipole pointing towards the donor material at the donor-acceptor interface of OPVCs is proposed. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential of both the GLAD technique and molecular electrical doping for improving the performance of OPVCs.
