Abstract:
Microstructures of ulexite were investigated by CTEM and low electron dose HREM. It was found that the longitudinal grains in ulexite were oriented to c-direction to form a bundle structure. There were a number of small-angle grain boundaries and stacking faults inside a grain in the ulexite. Cleavage microcracks and stacking faults were mostly introduced on the {010} of the ulexite. The high-angle grain boundaries mainly consisted of high coincidence boundaries, which was confirmed by a comparison of observed contact angles and calculated degree of coincidence at the boundaries. The light transmittance properties of the ulexite would depend on the defects such as stacking fault, small-angle grain boundary, and high-angle grain boundary.

Abstract:
In this paper, for double row angular contact ball bearing, a five-degrees-of-freedom bearing analysis model based on quasi-statics is proposed. This model is used to study the influence of structural parameters and service conditions on the tilt angle and limit tilt angle of the bearing. The results show that the radial clearance will increase the ultimate tilt angle. The coincidence degree between the roller and the inner raceway will reduce the ultimate tilt angle, but the coincidence degree between the roller and the outer raceway has the opposite effect. The increase in the external load of the bearing will increase the tilt angle. The moment load has the greatest effect on the tilt angle. The rotation speed of the bearing has no effect on the tilt angle. The coincidence degree between the roller and the raceway will reduce the tilt angle; furthermore, the influence of the coincidence degree between roller and different ring on the tilt angle is also different when different rings are fixed. The tilt angle will decrease with the increase of the initial contact angle, and this effect is more and more obvious. The fixation of different ring has no effect on this influence.

Full text
Abstract:
Scatter degrades the contrast and quantitative accuracy of positron emission tomography (PET) images, and most methods for estimating and correcting scattered coincidences in PET subtract scattered events from the measured data. Compton scattering kinematics can be used to map out the locus of possible scattering locations. These curved lines (2D) or surfaces (3D), which connect the coincidence detectors, encompass the surface (2D) or volume (3D) where the decay occurs. In the limiting case where the scattering angle approaches zero, the scattered coincidence approaches the true coincidence. Therefore, both true and scattered coincidences can be considered similarly in a generalized scatter maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization reconstruction algorithm. The proposed method was tested using list-mode data obtained from a GATE simulation of a Jaszczak-type phantom. For scatter fractions from 10% to 60%, this approach reduces noise and improves the contrast recovery coefficients by 0.5–3.0% compared with reconstructions using true coincidences and by 3.0–24.5% with conventional reconstruction methods. The results demonstrate that this algorithm is capable of producing images entirely from scattered photons, eliminates the need for scatter corrections, increases image contrast, and reduces noise. This could be used to improve diagnostic quality and/or to reduce patient dose and radiopharmaceutical cost.

Abstract:
AbstractBy pure coincidence, for the next few years the orbit of the satellite Namaka around the dwarf planet Haumea (formerly 2003 EL61) is nearly edge-on to our line-of-sight. This type of configuration does not last for long, because as Haumea travels around the sun in its 283 year orbit, we continuously see the Haumean system from different angles. It is only edge-on at the angle we see right now, and at the angle it will again be in 141 years – half of a Haumean year from now. In addition to being an interesting coincidence, the fact that the orbit of Namaka is nearly edge-on provides the opportunity to obtain an enormous amount of information about the Haumean system. We present measurements of the timing of these events observed from Laboratrio Nacional de Astrofsica (LNA), partner in an international campaign to observe these events from the most suitable mid-sized telescopes.

Abstract:
The misorientations of over 200 pairs of adjacent grains separated by grain boundaries in textured YBa2Cu3O7−δ were measured using a transmission electron microscopy technique. The results indicate that there exist discrete preferred rotation angles and rotation axes. The existence of low-energy boundaries is inferred. The results are analyzed based on the Constrained Coincidence Site Lattice (CCSL) and O2-lattice theories and imply the applicability of such theories for the case of large-angle grain boundaries in a complex crystal structure such as YBa2Cu3O7−δ. The results of analysis also show that some boundaries are likely to be reduced in oxygen near the boundary to satisfy the constraint of the coincidence site lattice.

Abstract:

"Mechanism of failure by hydrogen-induced cracking in pipeline steels." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2015-08-2168.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipeline steels that carry oil and natural gas in severe environments suffer from two important modes of failure: stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). The SCC has been studied extensively in the literature; however, HIC phenomenon in pipeline steels is less investigated by researchers. Nevertheless, HIC is recognized as the most important damage mode in sour environment. Hydrogen atoms produced due to surface corrosion of the steel diffuse into it through microstructural defects. When a critical amount of hydrogen is accumulated in such defects, HIC cracks initiate and propagate. The main objectives of this thesis are to find the HIC crack nucleation and propagation sites, evaluate a role of texture and grain boundary character distribution in crack growth and finally establish the effect of different microstructural parameters contributing to the HIC related failure in pipeline steel. In this thesis, HIC standard test and electrochemical hydrogen-charging experiments were used to induce HIC cracks in pipeline steels. HIC cracks at the cross section of tested samples were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM observations clearly indicate that the investigated X60 and X70 steels are susceptible to HIC while the X60SS steel showed a higher resistance to HIC. This experiment also proved that the X70 steel has higher susceptibility to HIC than the other investigated steel. Energy dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) analyses indicated that two types of inclusion namely manganese sulfide and carbonitiride precipitates serve as crack nucleation sites. HIC cracks were observed to propagate at the center of cross section where the segregation of some elements such as carbon and manganese occurred. Moreover, two other experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the capability of pipeline steels for hydrogen-trapping. The first test, hydrogen-permeation experiment, showed that all pipeline steel specimens, such as X70, X60 and X60SS steels, contain both reversible and irreversible hydrogen traps. However, the density of traps at the center of cross section was higher than other regions in all tested specimens. The hydrogen-discharging experiments also showed that all specimens keep a considerable amount of hydrogen inside their traps. The hydrogen traps, based on their binding energy with the metal matrix, are categorized as reversible (weak) and irreversible (strong) traps and the roles of each type of traps are explained. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements were done along the HIC crack in X70 steel after standard HIC test. The results showed that the {100} texture was strong while the {111} texture was weak. Some special texture components, such as the {110}, {332} and {112}, were observed after the HIC crack-stoppage. EBSD results also documented that fine grain colonies were prone to intergranular HIC crack propagation and IPF and PF, calculated in both sides of HIC cracks, showed the preferences of ND||<100> orientation. Both susceptible X60 and non-susceptible X60SS steel to HIC were compared based on the EBSD results. It was observed that the high amount of recrystallization fraction with no stored energy is one of the main reasons for a higher HIC resistance of X60SS steel to HIC. Moreover, Kernel Average Misorientation (KAM) data showed that the deformation is more concentrated in the as-received and HIC tested X60 specimens. The effect of hydrogen-charging during tensile/fatigue loading of X60SS steel was studied and it was observed that some HIC cracks at the cross section of X60SS steel were appeared after hydrogen-charging at stresses below the yield stress. Experiments were carried out to understand the effect of cold-rolling and annealing on HIC susceptibility in pipeline steels. The results documented that the {100} dominant texture is more pronounced in 50% and 90% cold-rolled and annealed specimens. The effect of different factors such as KAM degree and recrystallized fraction affecting HIC susceptibility on cold-rolled and annealed specimens was investigated. The obtained results showed that the cold-rolling and annealing process may not be considered as an effective method to increase HIC resistance in pipeline steels.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the training of several Anglo-American scholars who published in a cluster of fields in the humanities —including classics, archaeology, anthropology, history, and modern languages—before their specialization into separate disciplines. Intriguingly, instruction in research in these disciplines began very close in time to each discipline’s formation. Starting from this coincidence, the chapter asks whether research training gives rise to a discipline or the formation of a discipline precedes its particular way of training? The chapter’s answer is that research training alone cannot explain the emergence of disciplinarity, as many factors play into the formation of a new discipline. But the invention of research training, especially in academe, may have been the catalyst that made it gel.

Abstract:
Transport by water was the quickest and cheapest method to move goods in the Middle Ages, and linked together people even in distant parts of England. Trading places could arise in almost any place where boats could be hauled ashore, on either rivers or coastal estuaries. These were all potential places where people on land could come together to trade with those arriving by boat and ship. It is no coincidence that the rise in both inland and coastal transport dates to the tenth century, the period from which England became increasingly commercialized. The discussion of water transport is not limited to indirect evidence. Archaeological work has identified canals dug to allow the movement of boats up rivers and in marshland, and landing places where boats could be brought to the banks of rivers and the shore. The development of water-transport led to the development of a ‘marine culture’, a change in attitudes to the sea and ships.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 takes up the perspective of Kate Croy over against that of lover Merton Densher, to recognize how James’ The Wings of the Dove moves the reader beyond the short-sighted Anglo-Puritan ethics of Densher to contemplate the “beauty” of Marian-Catholic beneficence, mercy, and non-zero-sum romantic vision—especially when it comes to the otherwise dark entwinements of love and death. From mid-century English critics Yvor Winters and F.R. Leavis to the latest U.S. aestheticians, Wings has long been understood to be a sordid tale of greed and betrayal redeemed precisely yet only by the rise of conscience in Densher—who, not coincidently, takes over the indirect discourse of the second half of the novel, to the point of declaring his personal Christian ascension. And yet it is not a coincidence that this part of Wings is set in Adriatic-Catholic Venice: a city of waterways and alleyways in which to go straight is to get there by gorgeous indirection—which, this chapter argues, is the objective correlative of how James’ notorious late style (postponements, fractures, multivalences) and huge melodramatic, Veronese-inspired canvas serves the alternative Marian knowingness, not only of Kate Croy, the visionary mistress among the Marian figures, but also of the dying yet still sexual Milly Theale, her surreptitious acolyte; and not only that of the two women in the romantic triangle but also of the three wondrous queer characters in support—besmitten yet selfless Susan Stringham, visionary doctor Sir Luke Strett, and Eugenio the major-domo of Venetian Living.

<em>Abstract</em>.—We evaluated long-term fisheries data relative to a range of perturbations for the Arkansas River from 1970 to 2006. Rotenone sample sites were located at pool 13 (Garrison Creek), Ozark Lake (Lavaca), and Lake Dardanelle (Panther Cove and the Arkansas Nuclear 1 Effluent Bay). The period of record was 24 years for Garrison Creek and Lavaca, 29 years for Effluent Bay, and 30 years for Panther Cove. Mean total fish biomass ranged between 466 kg/ha and 1,601 kg/ha among sites, and no temporal trends were detected for total biomass. Invasion of zebra mussels <em>Dreissena polymorpha</em>, discovery of largemouth bass virus, and imposition of a 381 mm total length (TL) minimum length limit for largemouth bass <em>Micropterus salmoides </em>likely contributed to notable changes in these fisheries during the past 30 years. Biomass of redear sunfish <em>Lepomis microlophus</em>, freshwater drum <em>Aplodinotus grunniens</em>, and blue catfish <em>Ictalurus furcatus </em>increased in association with the invasion of the river by nonnative zebra mussels. Spotted gar <em>Lepisosteus oculatus </em>and paddlefish <em>Polyodon spathula </em>biomass increased, and common carp <em>Cyprinus carpio </em>biomass declined coincident with the zebra mussel invasion. Large-scale sedimentation of aquatic habitats may have been related to observed declines of backwater-oriented species, especially common carp and spotted gar. The frequency of largemouth bass between 350 and 400 mm TL increased in electrofishing samples after the imposition of a 381-mm-TL minimum length limit, and total catch per hour of largemouth bass greater than 381 mm TL increased. Our associations would suggest that the discovery of largemouth bass virus during 2000 contributed to (1) lower electrofishing catch per hour of largemouth bass greater than 533 mm TL, and (2) an average increase of 420 h required for an angler to catch a 2.27-kg largemouth bass. We anticipate further changes in the Arkansas River during the next decade from the biological invasions of white perch <em>Morone americana</em>, bighead carp <em>Hypophthalmichthys nobilis</em>, and silver carp <em>H. molitrix</em>; increased establishment of aquatic vegetation; and accelerated loss of aquatic habitats associated with planned federal navigation channel improvements.

For this case the necessary and sufficient conditions providing coincidence of normal vectors and surface curvatures in the designed point are presented as the vector equations system. The relations among blade pressure angle, head-cutter radius, radial distance, tool installation angle, machine centre to back, blank offset and velocity ratio are obtained. The developed methods make the opportunity to design equivalent machine-tool settings, to extend manufacturing possibilities of gear-cutting machines and to raise the load rating of the gear drive.

Abstract For the explicit purpose of guiding autonomous mobile robots on wide and flat planes, we propose a specially designed guiding sign. It consists of a cylinder with four slits on its surface, and a fluorescent light on the center axis of the cylinder. Two outer slits are parallel to each other, and the other two inner slits are angled. A robot takes an image of the sign with a TV camera. By the threshold operation, it has four bright sets of pixels each of which corresponds to one of the four slits of the cylinder. By measuring the relative distances between those four bright blobs in the image plane, the robot can compute its distance and angle to the direction of the sign using two simple geometrical equations. We have built a mobile robot and a sign. Using a personal computer with an image processor, we have evaluated the accuracy of the proposed method of position and angle measurement, and compared them with the theoretical analysis. The data show good coincidence with the analytical results. We have programmed the characteristics of the measurement, which is called the simulation program. First, the parameters in the simulation program are adjusted. Next, we have done several trajectory following experiments using this simulation program. The simulation program provides us with the results which could not be taken in the actual experiment.

Abstract:
This work presents the results of ongoing investigations aimed at determining the influence of crystallographic texture, microtexture and mesotexture on hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) in low carbon pipeline steels. HIC samples of two steels were investigated using X-ray diffraction texture measurement and Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM™). The first steel is a low strength API 5L X46 retired from service and the second is a low sulfur ASTM A106 steel. The results of this work confirm the feasibility of improving the HIC resistance of pipeline steels through crystallographic texture control and grain boundary engineering. Controlled rolling schedules can be proposed in order to induce a crystallographic texture dominated by the {112}//ND, {111}//ND and {011}//ND fibres. Such a texture is expected to decrease significantly the steel susceptibility to HIC by: (i) reducing the number of available transgranular and intergranular low resistance cleavage paths provided by the {001}//ND oriented grains, (ii) reducing the probability of crack coalescence and stepwise HIC propagation and (iii) increasing the number of high resistance intergranular crack paths provided by coincidence site lattice (CSL) and low angle boundaries with the lowest possible energy.

Abstract:
The multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) method, which integrates aerodynamic performance and structural stability, was utilized in the development of a single-stage transonic axial compressor. Numerical simulations and compressor tests were also carried out to evaluate the aerodynamic performance and safety factor of the optimized compressor. The rotor has 60 design parameters with twelve most sensitive design variables selected for design optimization. The stator was redesigned according to the rotor outlet flow angle variation to match the stator incidence angle by −1∼0 degrees, while maintaining the stage outlet flow angle. The design goal is to maximize both the stage efficiency and the safety factor from the baseline scratch compressor design. The object function is composed of the normalized efficiency and safety factor with weight factors. Initially, an approximation model was created to search for the global optimization within given ranges of variables and considering several design constraints. The genetic algorithm was used to explore the Pareto front of the optimization to find the maximum objective function values. The final design was chosen after a second stage gradient-based optimization process to improve the accuracy of the optimization. The CFD results showed that more blade loading is burden to the hub region by increasing the incidence angle. The fore part blade loading gradually decreases along the span-wise direction. In addition, normal shock, which spreads along the hub to the blade tip, is confined in the rotor flow passage and pressure surface shock coincidence point moves to be closer to the blade leading edge, indicating an increase in the amount of blade loading. FEA analyses showed that the blade root stress has been drastically relieved, because the optimized blade has trapezoid-shaped hub design relative to the baseline design. The final design achieved efficiency gain of 3.69% and showed a higher safety factor by 2.3 times relative to the baseline model, while maintaining its stage mass flow rate and total-to-total pressure within the design constraints. The compressor performance test data showed good agreement with the optimized design and CFD results. However, there is room for improvement in the optimization process to reflect off-design performance so as to secure more stable compressor operation ranges.

In ASME 2011 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2011-63254.

Abstract:
A set of experiments were conducted on the circumferential overlap trisection helical baffle heat exchangers with inclined angles of 20°, 24°, 28° and 32° single-thread and inclined angle of 32° dual-thread one, and a segmental baffle heat exchanger as a contrast scheme. The cylinder case of the testing heat exchanger is a common shell, while the tube bundle core could be replaced. The shell side heat transfer coefficient ho is obtained by subtract tube-side convection thermal resistance and tube wall conduction resistance from the overall heat transfer coefficient K. The curves of shell side heat transfer coefficient ho, pressure drop Δpo, Nusselt number Nuo, and axial Euler number Euz,o are presented versus axial Reynolds number Rez,o. A comprehensive performance index Nuo/Euz,o is suggested to demonstrate the integral properties of both heat transfer and flow resistance of different schemes, and the curves of Nuo/Euz,o versus Rez,o of the different schemes are presented. The results show that the scheme with inclined angle 20° performs better than other schemes, and the scheme with inclined angle 24° ranks the second, however the segment scheme ranks the last. The curves of Nuo/Euz,o of both schemes with inclined angle 32° of single-thread and dual-thread are almost coincident, even though their heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop curves are quite different. The results indicate also that for the circumferential overlap trisection helical baffle schemes the optimal inclined angle is around 20° instead of around 40° as rated by many literatures for the quadrant helical baffle schemes.

Abstract:
On the basis of the hysteresis damping model, an approach is proposed that makes it possible to determine the tangents of the loss angles at harmonic vibrations of piezoelectric ceramic continuum. A model of polarization of complete ferroelectrics - ferroelastics by electric and mechanical fields for the case of low intensity fields is used. The approximation of the physical modules as functions of the residual parameters is carried out under the conditions of coincidence of the areas of small hysteresis loops.

Abstract:
Abstract Although Stewart platforms have been applied in the designs of aricraft and vehicle simulators and parallel robots in many years, their closed-form solution of direct (forward) position analysis has not been completely solved. Up to the present time, only the relatively simple Stewart platforms have been analyzed. Examples are the octahedral Stewart and the 4-4 Stewart platforms, in which two pairs of both upper and lower joint centers are coincident. The former results in in an eighth degree polynomial and the latter results in an eighth and a twelfth degree polynomials for different cases. The single unknown variable is in the form of square of a tan-half-angle. This paper further extends the direct position analysis to a more genearl case of the Stewart platform, the 4-6 Stewart platforms, in which two pairs of upper joint centers of adjacent limbs are coincident. The result is a sixteenth degree polynomial in the square of a tan-half-angle, which indicates that a maximum of 32 configurations may be obtained. It is also shown that the previously derived solutions of 4-4 and and 3-6 Stewart platforms can be easily deduced from the sixteenth degree polynomial by setting some geometric parameters be equal to 1 or 0.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is development of the design method for supersonic turbine aerofoils. In particular, a design method is established for four fundamental parameters which determine the overall configuration of the aerofoils: inlet angle, outlet angle, pitch-to-chord ratio, and stagger angle. The developed design method is constructed as follows. Three parameters of a velocity triangle, the inlet flow angle, inflow Mach number and pressure ratio, are selected as predetermined design parameters. The inlet angle is coincident with the inlet flow angle. The outlet angle is formulated as a function of the three design parameters using aerodynamic theory. An allowable design space between the pitch-to-chord ratio and the stagger angle is clarified by formulating three geometrical constraints to accelerate supersonic flow smoothly. The three geometrical constraints are the inlet and outlet flow passage areas derived from the design parameters and the no-inflection-point condition on the aerofoil surface. Good performance of supersonic turbine aerofoils designed by the developed method is confirmed using computational fluid dynamics. There is no strong shock wave. When there is no solution in the theoretical allowable design space because of the large pitch-to-chord ratio required for low centrifugal stress, the following two methods enable the feasible design space to be enlarged without a large increase in the energy loss. One is to ease the restriction of the outlet flow passage area. The other is to increase the outlet flow angle of the pressure surface by about 10 deg in the axial direction from the theoretical angle. Their effectiveness is also validated by computational fluid dynamics.
