Abstract:
PurposeThe business angels market dramatically changed the modus operandi and nature of business angels’ activity, evolving from lone investors to angel groups managed professionally. This paper aims to analyze the impact of angel perceived career development on angel satisfaction and, consequently, on their intention to continue investing.Design/methodology/approachA model was tested through covariance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS based on data collected from 336 business angels from seven European countries.FindingsThe results highlight that: the perception of personal development is a decisive factor in pursuing the career of business angel; personal development has a higher explanatory power in angel career development than fostering innovation; and the perception of career development has positive impacts on angels’ job satisfaction and reinvestment intention. The paper ends with implications and guidelines for angels, gatekeepers and entrepreneurs, which may increase satisfaction with the angel experience and contribute to enriching business angel work.Research limitations/implicationsCross-sectional self-reported data were used to analyze the results of this study.Originality/valueTo paper extends the body of knowledge of business angels’ perceived career development, with implications for business angels, which may increase satisfaction with angel experience and, therefore, contribute to enhancing business angels’ activity. Thus, this study provides a consistent reference for forthcoming studies regarding the career of business angels and their relationship with entrepreneurs.

Abstract:
Angels are a common motif in the World, and in the West. Not just in religion (and, by extension, philosophy), but also in art and its myriad expressions. There are many ways to imagine (that is, to make an image of) angels, and their etymology is just as varied. For instance, in the Greek translation of the Hebrew mal’akh, it means “shadow of God,” which sounds a bit ominous. Angels can often be understood as representative of various religions’ ethical principles, a moral symbol par excellence; and yet still others may fall from grace for their transgressions. While they are not always all called “angels,” celestial beings who act as contact points between God(s) and humans appear frequently in many different theologies and mythologies around the world. In the Qur'an, for example, Allah sends angels, who are described as having many pairs of wings, as messengers. The Bible, of course, references various angels as well. There is no one way an angel can be depicted. Fierce, kind, with many wings, or none at all. This particular piece focuses more on the angel’s expression. The expression is aloof. The piece is sketchy, loose, like our translations or ideas of angels.

Abstract:
An analysis of American independent cinema from 1990 until 2007, with an emphasis on these films? relationship to the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. There is a uniquely American tendency to use cinema to reevaluate marriage that was most clearly evident in the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, this thesis contends that this tendency has emphatically reemerged in American independent cinema since 1990. Using detailed analyses of films that most clearly evidence the persistence of this theme, this thesis explores, in-depth, four films: Hal Hartley?s Trust (1990), Richard Linklater?s Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), and Aaron Katz?s Quiet City (2007). These four films combine to form a coherent vision of a new perspective on romantic coupling, uniting to together show what they are rebelling against, what their new relationships should be built upon, and, finally, what the new kind of relationship that they present can look like. The definitively American theme that is delineated in these four films not only forms a clear connection to the history of American cinema, but also shows how new generations approach the essential questions implicit in coupling and marriage.

Abstract:
“A Furnace Without Angels” is a hybrid work of poetry and non-fiction prose essays revolving around a crisis of faith. With the speaker’s brain always in a state of impending apocalypse, information— biological, personal, spiritual— is filtered down through a Biblical syntax, struggling to form an equation that results with ‘but you should live anyways.’ The poems lean toward imagination— the abstract, the surreal. The non-fiction prose flits between academic interest and attempts to recontextualize a fading belief in God. It’s hard to say if anyone wins.

Bendoraitis, Kristian Allan. "‘Behold, the Angels Came and Served Him’ : a compositional analysis of Angels in Matthew." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/737/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to elucidate the role angels play in the narrative of Matthew’s Gospel by investigating how angel traditions have contributed to his portrait of Jesus. Angels have been significant in Christological research due to their primary function as messengers and mediators between heaven and earth. However, their role in the Gospel narratives has been largely unexplored. Matthew, in particular, demonstrates a noteworthy interest in angels through the handling of his sources, his redaction, and addition of unique material. Utilizing the Old Testament and sources from the Second Temple period to illustrate the variety of angel traditions, this study seeks to identify how these traditions are reflected in Matthew’s Gospel and to interpret the passages in which angels appear or are represented. As a result, the majority of this study consists of a detailed exegesis of the passages that specifically mention angels. Each reference is critically analyzed in view of its role in the Gospel’s narrative and in light of Matthew’s redactional hand. In addition, discussion of relevant traditions of angels accompanies each chapter in order to illustrate how Matthew’s use of angels has facilitated his Gospel’s message. The thesis concludes that Matthew’s narrative includes angel traditions for three reasons. First, through his emphasis on the angels’ agency, Matthew advances his portrait of Jesus the Son of Man as an authoritative eschatological judge. Second, angels appear at significant moments in the narrative, expressing God’s presence in the life of Jesus. Finally, angels contribute to the apocalyptic cosmology of Matthew’s worldview.

Elfsberg, Fredrik, and Sofia Jonsson. "How to fly with business angels : - A qualitative study on business angel investment criteria’s." Thesis, Umeå University, Umeå School of Business, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-1760.

Full text
Abstract:

This study is concerned with business angels’ investments process and which aspects in their choice of target firms are considered important in that process. The problem statement of this thesis is; what aspects play a role in Business angels’ investment decision, and in what way? How do these aspects affect business angels when making investment decisions, and why? The aim subsequently is concerned with discerning what is most important for business angels when choosing their target firms and how business angels make their investment decisions. We also aim to be able to create a deeper understanding of business angels, and contribute to small entrepreneurial firms in their search for financiers. Our research can provide information on how entrepreneurs can attract business angels.

The study is created with previous studies as a framework, and a wide selection of studies have been used. These have been examined and issues which in those studies have been found to be important for business angels have been reviewed and accounted for in the theory chapter.

The approach we used for data collection was through qualitative interviews with the use of an interview guide. This is explained by our aspiration to understand business angels’ investment criteria rather than describe them. Due to this, the view of interpretivism along with constructionism was taken on when constructing the interviews and findings. The respondents were found through business angels networks, and the selection of business angels entailed a fair representation of the researched group. This thesis has been conducted in an academically correct manner, and the results are validated and confirmed by the respondents.

The results we came to from our interviews were that the entrepreneur was most important for business angels in their evaluations, but other aspects also played a role. We analyzed our results with the use of our theory section and hence could see that some things we had come up with were unique, whilst some findings confirmed previous studies. We found that many business angels turn down investments due to their lack of time, which was a rather new emphasize for this study. Some qualities of the entrepreneur the business angels required were that they needed to be sales oriented and not overly optimistic about the future returns and prosperity of their ventures. We have shown that if entrepreneurs are overly optimistic about the value of their own firm it is likely that they will lose the deal. This was also of interest as it has not been stated as clearly in previous studies.

We conclude the thesis by giving advice to entrepreneurs and business angels, what future business angels should keep in mind and also what entrepreneurs should know before they involve themselves with business angels.

Abstract:
In this paper, the genetic algorithm is applied to calculate the optimum slope and surface azimuth angles for receiving maximum solar radiation in an area of Iran. Different components of solar radiation are employed in order to calculate the solar optimum angles. At first, the optimum angels are calculated in different days, months, seasons and the whole year and the energy gain is calculated. Then, this process is redone with considering different component of solar radiation. These conditions are direct, direct and ground reflect, direct and diffuse, and all together. The results showed that maximum solar energy in different days of a year is received at different slope angels; however, the optimum azimuth angle is zero for receiving maximum solar energy. In addition, adjusting the collector at the daily optimum slope angle can only save energy very little compared with the case at the monthly optimum slope angle. Furthermore, the results of analyzing different components of solar radiation show that the optimum slope angles are mostly related to the direct radiation, however, the gain of energy is considerably different. It is worth mentioning that genetic algorithm is more effective when the independent parameters are numerous and in this case, the optimum angles are easily determined, however, the computation time is reduced.

Full text
Abstract:
Wide-angle parabolic equations (WAPEs) play an important role in physics. They are derived by an expansion of a square-root pseudo-differential operator in one-way wave equations, and then solved by finite-difference techniques. In the present paper, a different approach is suggested. The starting point is an extra-wide-angle parabolic equation (EWAPE) valid for small variations of the refractive index of a medium. This equation is written in an integral form, solved by a perturbation technique, and transformed to the spectral domain. The resulting split-step spectral algorithm for the EWAPE accounts for the propagation angles up to 90° with respect to the nominal direction. This EWAPE is also generalized to large variations in the refractive index. It is shown that WAPEs known in the literature are particular cases of the two EWAPEs. This provides an alternative derivation of the WAPEs, enables a better understanding of the underlying physics and ranges of their applicability, and opens an opportunity for innovative algorithms. Sound propagation in both motionless and moving media is considered. The split-step spectral algorithm is particularly useful in the latter case since complicated partial derivatives of the sound pressure and medium velocity reduce to wave vectors (essentially, propagation angles) in the spectral domain.

As the plate is rotated away from being 90 degrees to the web, the effective “length” of the stiffener in the longitudinal direction increases. However, AASHTO is currently silent on how to address the possible effects on fatigue performance for other angles in between these two extremes. This report summarizes an FEA study that was conducted in order to investigate and determine the fatigue category for welded attachments that are placed at angles other than 0 or 90 degrees for various stiffener geometries and thicknesses. Recommendations on how to incorporate the results into the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications are included in this report.

Abstract:
The California Freight Mobility Plan 2020 lists the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor region as a prominent industrial hub experiencing an increase in freight flows. The California Freight Mobility Plan also regards automated truck platoon (ATP) as an emerging opportunity to minimize congestion on the trade corridor routes. Percentage change in accessibility from 2022 (“without” ATP) to 2040 (“with” ATP) is calculated for the eighteen industry sectors of the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor. The application of the accessibility formulation was carried out with data on travel time from I-710 and I-10 within Los Angeles County. The findings suggest that all the industry sectors have a very high positive percentage change in accessibility by transforming from “without” to “with” ATP deployment-based accessibility. In the vicinity of the prominent freight corridors of I-710 and I-10 within Los Angeles County, notably, the largest increase in accessibility above 90% will be observed for the industry sectors of Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting, Health Care and Social Assistance, Finance and Insurance, Transportation and Warehousing, and Retail Trade of the Los-Angeles-Inland Empire. Thus, these findings suggest the deployment of ATP on specific freight routes to enhance and sustain economic activity across the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridors.
