Abstract:
AbstractThis article displays a semiotic analysis of the Profecías de Andrés in the novel Satanás by Mario Mendoza. In this narration the death is one of the persistent elements and it is built up from Andres’ divinations every time that he paints or imagines a portrait. The fi gures, understood as the minimal semantic and consequent elements, that emerge in the predictions refer to death, that is valued enthusiastically and awkwardly by the characters of the novel. In this sense, this article presents a fi gurative, narrative, actoral, thematic and axiological analysis; everything based on the methods proposed by the Paris semiotic school. Key words: Satanás, Mario Mendoza, death, semiotic analysis, figures, themes, axiology.

Abstract:
Summary In this article we will analyze two aspects of Andrés Bello’s (1781–1865) grammatical thought: its relation to the English empiricists and its similarity with generative grammar. His relation to the English empiricists is due to the fact that Bello spent 19 years in London, where he became familiar with the work of Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Reid. In fact his philosophical work, Filosofía del entendimiento, sounds like some of those philosophers’ essays. From the empiricists Bello derives the idea that there is no innate universal grammar with rules present in all languages, as well as his concept of language as an independent system of arbitrary and conventional signs. From Reid he derived his interpretation of the evolution of the language: signs start as ‘natural’ (i.e., they allow humans to communicate without any particular language), and then they become ‘artificial’, i.e., arbitrary and conventional, particular to each grammatical system. Because of his philosophical position, Bello has been compared to structuralist linguists. Here we will show that some of Bello’s grammatical thoughts can be compared with those of Chomsky. The reason for this is that in his grammatical analysis Bello uses concepts reminiscent of generative grammar. For example, Bello proposes the notion of an ‘latent proposition’ similar to that of ‘deep sttaicture’. And when he analyzes for example relative clauses and elliptical constructions, he uses concepts that are familiar to generative grammarians. In other words, the paper tries to show that methodologically and analytically Bello shares some concepts present in Chomsky’s linguistic theory. It also shows differences between Bello and Chomsky, and concludes by pointing out that the major difference between the two linguists is that Bello assumes language can be learned through a symbolic system, while Chomsky assumes language to be innate and independent of other cognitive systemsof the mind.

Abstract:
Abstract The island of San Andrés is located approximately 110 miles east of the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua and 300 miles west-northwest of the Colombian mainland. The literature and culture of the islands in the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago are still not very well known or studied, both within and outside Colombia, due to problems in editorial work, translation, and distribution and also because the relationship between the mainland and the islands has been often tense and difficult. The article will examine the 1987 novel San Andres, a Herstory by Keshia Howard-Livingston from the perspective of herstory, that is, narrating history from women's perspectives. This novel, through its depiction of the travels of three generations of women, proposes an alternative history of San Andrés and the Caribbean. These women, due to their race and gender, have been doubly excluded from traditional historiography. I propose to study Howard-Livingston's novel as a literary exercise that wants to narrate these women stories, turning herstory into “History,” and as a foundational work that questions the process of the construction of a national identity in Colombia. The novel shows the tensions and conflicts that arose because of this nationalist project and explores the relationship between identity, language, and memory in the Caribbean.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTINTER-ETHNIC CONFLICTS IN THE COLOMBIAN INSULAR CARIBBEAN In the San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina Archipelago, located at the heart of the western Caribbean, in a small, 50 square kilometer insular territory, the Anglophone world meets the Spanish speaking, and the Catholic world meets the Protestant. The ethnicized multiculturalism proposed by the Political Constitution of 1991in Colombia allowed the native population of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina, the Raizal-islander, to be legally recognized as an ethnic group. As a result, this place started to be governed by special norms regarding the migration and economy control, something which deepened the existing conflict between local Raizals and those from the Colombian Continental Caribbean. This article sets out to disclose how implementing multiculturalist polices have disrupted the historical process of coexistence between both communities.Key Words: Multiculturalism, Ethnicity, Social conflict, Interethnic relations, Colombian insular Caribbean, Raizal-islanders, Continental settlers (pañas), San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina Archipelago.

Christian salvation is the unequivocal desire of God for every human being and the whole complex web that forms a part and involves its existential reality, not getting anything out, so that the more one realizes the human person, the more it saves. However, this understanding of salvation was, over time, losing that understanding what caused a shrinking and even a subjective gathering that was present in a state of being religious that became resentful of the world and life. This resentment that corrosively flowed into the Christian spirituality and also crumbled the perception of the true image of God by those who do not travel the path of faith, creating ghosts and mistakes that only separate those who should walk together the path of the gift , communion and the freedom of being, namely, God and human person. Aware that in this picture the way is expressed this relationship with God (especially when that expression appears offset from the new foundations of modern cultural sensitivity) was, in his measure, the reason for the contradiction in the idea of salvation which we will expose in this dissertation, supported in part of the work of Andres Torres Queiruga to reinterpret the theme of salvation in serious dialogue with the categories of our time and in profound harmony with that which is the distinctive core for all the Christian belief: God is love. It depends on our theological coherence in with respect to update the message and the reality that is detached from the theme of salvation as a reality already present and consistent with the anthropological reality of human beings, until such time as it is raised to the depth of his achievement / full salvation .

Abstract:

Abstract:
Obradorismo is a progressive approach to government that seeks to reduce inequality and combat corruption. It arose in Mexico with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and bases its foundations on the moral economy and ethics of public administration. It is based on honesty and the correct actions of public servants. Contrary to neoliberalism, the obradorismo focuses on the efficient administration of the public treasury in favor of the people. Obradorismo highlights the customs and traditions of Mexico, takes up the importance of history and its values of the culture of the original peoples. Currently, Obradorismo presents itself as the current of progressive and democratic social thought in America.

Abstract:

"Test Results for the Static and Rotordynamic Characteristics of a Long (L/D = 0.75) Smooth Seal in Two-Phase (Mainly Gas) Conditions With a 62-Bar Inlet Pressure." In ASME Turbo Expo 2020: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2020-14118.

Abstract:
Abstract Recent multiphase-pump developments encountered several rotordynamic issues with smooth balance-piston seals, creating a need to better understand the performance of annular seals under multiphase-flow operation. This paper presents measurements of static and dynamic characteristics of a long smooth seal (L/D = 0.75, D = 114.686 mm, and Cr = 0.200 mm) operating under pure- and mainly air condition in which air is mixed with silicone oil (PSF-5cSt). Tests are performed at a supply pressure of 62.1 bars-a, three rotation speeds (5, 10, 15 krpm), three pressure ratios (PRs) (0.6, 0.5, 0.4), for a range of inlet liquid volume fraction (LVFi) from 0% to 8%. The results are then compared to: (1) the previous test reported by Zhang et al. (2017, “Experimental Study of the Static and Dynamic Characteristics of a Long Smooth Seal with Two-Phase, Mainly-air Mixtures,” J. Eng. Gas Turbines Power, 139(12), p. 122504) with similar testing condition but a different seal geometry (L/D = 0.65, D = 89.306 mm, and Cr = 0.188 mm) and (2) the predictions from a bulk-flow model developed by San Andrés (2012, “Rotordynamic Force Coefficients of Bubbly Mixture Annular Pressure Seals,” ASME J. Eng. Gas Turbines Power, 134(2), p. 022503). Results show a significant increase of direct dynamic stiffness KΩ as LVFi increases, especially at low PR. Test results reported by Zhang et al. (2017) has an opposite tendency of KΩ as an impact of increasing LVFi. Concerning cross-coupled dynamic stiffness kΩ and cross-coupled damping c, the results from Zhang et al. (2017) and the present results agree to the effects of changing speed, PR, and LVFi under pure- and mainly air conditions. As LVFi increases, direct damping C increases while test results reported by Zhang et al. (2017) showed no significant increase. Except for the direct dynamic stiffness and the impact of changing LVFi on the cross-coupled dynamic stiffness, the bulk-flow model of San Andrés (2012) predicts decently the tendencies and magnitudes of the rotordynamic coefficients.

Childs, Dara W., and Joshua Bullock. "Static Performance of Smooth Liquid Annular Seals in the Transition and Turbulent Regimes." In ASME Turbo Expo 2021: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2021-58543.

Abstract:
Abstract Static test results are presented for smooth annular seals with a length-to-diameter ratio of 0.50, radius R = 51.00 mm, at the nominal radial clearance Cr = 0.2032 mm. Tests were conducted for angular shaft speeds; ω = 2, 4, 6, 8 krpm, axial pressure drops; ΔP = 2.1, 4.13, 6.21, 8.27 bars, and eccentricity ratios ϵ0 = e0/Cr = 0.00, 0.27, 0.53, 0.8 where e0 is the static eccentricity. Three pre-swirl inserts were used to target zero, medium, and high (0., 0.4, and 0.8) pre-swirl ratios for a set of pre-determined operating conditions with ISO VG 2 oil at 46.1°C. Pitot tubes measured the circumferential velocity at separate upstream and downstream seal locations and were used to calculate pre-swirl ratio, PSR = vinlet/Rω, and outlet-swirl ratio, OSR = voutlet/Rω. For all tested pre-swirl inserts, PSR tended to converge to 0.4∼0.5 as ω increased. PSR and OSR were poorly correlated. Volumetric leakage rate Q ˙ versus pressure differential ΔP was measured. The measured vector Reynolds number Re, combining the axial and circumferential Reynolds numbers ranged from ∼1000 to ∼3500. Based on Zirkelback and San Andrés 1996 publication, almost all of the flow regime is predicted to lie in the transition regime, with fewer points in the turbulent regime. Generally, the seals’ static centering properties were obtained by applying a static load Fs and measuring the resulting displacement vector e0. At many low-speed, low-ΔP test conditions, the seal would not remain in the desired centered or near-centered position and had to be forced into place with a centering force Fs. The authors believe that the observed de-centering effects resulted from test operations in the transition flow regime where the friction factor λ does not drop with increasing ΔP and increasing Re. A positive centering Lomakin effect requires that λ drop with increasing axial Reynolds number. The seals had positive centering effects over a large portion of the predicted transition flow regime, supporting the view that the shift from transition-to-turbulent flow regularly occurred at lower Re values than the Re = 3000 boundary used by Zirkleback and San Andrés.

Abstract:
The Norandino pipeline, build between 1998 and 1999, begins at the town of Pichanal nearby Orán in Argentina where it is connected to Argentinean Gas Transport System, It runs towards west crossing the Yunga in Salta province, climbs the Sierras Subandinas and the Cordillera Oriental through highly erosive environment, descends to Humahuaca city in Jujuy Province, crosses the Altiplano plateau, and reaches Chile through Paso de Jama then climbs up to 4.980 mas, crosses the Atacama desert to finally arrives at Tocopilla, Mejillones and Coloso cities. With 1070 km long and 20″ diameter, it’s capable to carry 4,6 million cubic meters per day expandable up to 8. The most hazardous part of the alignment is the Sierras Subandinas area, due mainly to geology and heavy rains. The east slope of the Cordillera Oriental, where the risk arises from the intense geodynamic and strong erosions in river crossings and landslides because of heavy rains that reach 1.500mm in four month, from December to March. In Cuesta de Mal Paso site, in front of San Andrés village in Salta Province, the pipeline should be laid along the hillside on a slope formed by the anticline limb, whose exposure to heavy erosion of the San Andres river at the base of the slope, the bedding to the river and seismic conditions of the region, constitute a geological and geotechnical risk to the pipeline integrity. The evaluation of deformation measurements of the slope, measured along several years, provided the necessary arguments to undertake the construction of tunnel in rock of 750 meters long and 2.5 meters wide and high, allowing the pipeline to pass below the main slip surface and therefore protecting it from a possible slide of the superficial layers of the slope. This paper describes the geological conditions, the geostructural situation of Cuesta de Mal Paso, the deformation monitoring system, the evaluation of the auscultation measurements, the design of the tunnel, the meaningful geological and geotechnical aspects of the tunnel construction and, finally, criteria for definition the auscultation system to monitoring the behavior of the tunnel and the Cuesta de Mal Paso slope.
