Arazi, Eliran. "From the Cannibal Eagle to the Trading Egret (and Back Again) : amazonian Dynamics of Power between Forest and Market." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris, EHESS, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024EHES0037.
Full textThis dissertation investigates the shaping and manifestation of power notions and dynamics among the Andoque of Northwest Amazonia, Colombia, through three types of entanglements: within the Indigenous population, with nonhuman entities in the Andoque territory, and with non-Indigenous agents. Building on literature on the continuity between human and nonhuman relations in animism and on familiarization and mastery as asymmetrical relational frameworks in Amazonia, I explore power beyond the realm of leadership and the public political arena, and define it within a context-transcending framework of exchange. I demonstrate that power is manifested in the capacity of both human and nonhuman agents to transform their relationships from symmetrical exchanges of bodies, vital principles, material goods, and action into asymmetrical ones that benefit their efforts to produce persons, while countering adversarial imbalances. Power stems from and facilitates the conversion of potentially harmful affinal relatives into safer, more benevolent consanguineal kin, and manifests in the capacity to refuse or suspend exchange and to participate in the transaction as its agent, rather than the transacted object. Spanning the fields of politics, economy, kinship, myth and ritual, my analysis can be narrowed into exchanges within three conceptual domains: ontological, kinship, and spatial. In the ontological domain, exchanges are rooted in the animist principle of shared interiority among beings with distinct bodily forms. This shared interiority leads to a default reciprocal homosubstitution of persons of one kind for those of another. Meanwhile, capable individuals engage in ontological manipulations to create asymmetry with nonhumans by enforcing heterosubstitutive exchange, in which they compensate for game with vegetal substances, or exploiting homosubstitution in sorcery assaults, transforming human victims into prey. Ontological manipulation is closely related to graded agency, which becomes apparent in kinship practices and imagery. Here, despite the Andoque’s cognatic kinship principles, their strong clan identities foster attempts at asymmetry in inter-clan relations. Agnatic descent is associated with higher agency over non-agnatic kin, non-kin, and nonhumans. In humans, diminished agency resembles states of domination, while in nonhumans, it can parallel—but does not equate to—the objectification seen in naturalism. Finally, power is anchored in spatial perceptions. The Andoque consider themselves as living at the center of a world axed upon the river’s course, resulting in the division of surrounding space into upriver and downriver. Using procedures of familiarization, appropriation, and encompassment, those living at the center draw upon forces, elements, and mythical figures associated with the river source for their survival and prosperity amid rival human and nonhuman centers. A similar pursuit of encompassment characterizes the center’s relationship with the river mouth—an affinal realm representing non-Indigenous people. This spatial framework encapsulates historical trajectories where asymmetrical exchanges between the Andoque and non-Indigenous agents redefine power dynamics between the former and nonhuman beings. My research pushes forward the research into the human-nonhuman relational continuum in Amazonia, establishing power as both the outcome of and the instrument for an enchainment of symmetrical and predominantly asymmetrical relationships, and revealing the interplay between power dynamics of human-nonhuman relations and those between Indigenous and non-Indigenous agents

Full textThis thesis describes and analyzes, over the long term, identitarian manifestations (mainly of ethnic character) of an Amerindian group, which remianed unitarian until XVth century: Cañaris people. Once they were incorporated into the empire of the Incas, a large number of Cañaris xere affected by collective relocations as part of the mitma system, a politic wgich characterized this prehispanic state. This ethno-historical and anthropological research was achieved in four contemporary localities: Cañar, the roiginal region of this ethnic group, in Ecuador, Porcon and Chiara, in Peru, as well as Copacabana, in Bolivian Altiplano. These areas were the scenario of diverse collective expressions, such as adaptation, strategic response, identitarian assertion, integration in new regional contexts and ethnogenesis, during the Spanish colonization. Nowadays, the descendants of this prehispanic people participate in native vindicate movements in Ecuador and Bolivia, meanwhile in Peru multiple local identitarian expressions are beginning. The dynamism of the ethnic constructions, as well as dialogues and tensions between structure and agency, are present between the end of the Insa Empire, the Colonization and the Andean Republican period

Full textWhat are the "traditional knowledge" of the "indigenous peoples and nations" recognized by the 1998 Ecuador Constitution? The ethnographic study of a Kayambi community allows to understand how the dynamics of the changes is carried through mythical and ritual speech. Year after year, in late June, the rituals associated with the festival of San Pedro are perpetuated despite changes that affect the lives and situation of the Kayambi and why Aya-Uma, the central figure of these rituals and a representational synthesis of the history of the Kayambi, and not only a simple patrimonial figure.Mythical speech collected from Kayambi during interviews lends to the reconstruction of a complexe system combining themes introduced by evangelization and the underwater world of the Apus, or elements of fauna and flora. This ambivalent speech is populated by ambivalent figures such as Chificha, Condor, Sanson or Chisilongo. When Kayambi speak their myths and perform their rites they express the reality of the moment for their own community. In so doing they interpret not only their own history, as a social group but the wider social group they are in contact with, that is the nation of Ecuador itself. The Kayambi institutions, both legacy of the colonial coercive order and restructuring elements, constantly reinvent kayambi social organization as a set. They cannot be considered in isolation.Mythical and ritual expressionss should be considered as complementary knowledges acting as a socio-political mediation. Their acts are not confined to ritual moments but extend to all social relations. Thus the preservation of this knowledge is a survival condition of Kayambi social system

Full textThe thesis analyses the events leading up to the storming of the Babri Mosque at Ayodhya by activists of the Hindu fundamentalist movement on 30th October 1990. In this context, all parties and organisations involved in the conflict, their histories, strategies and tactics are examined: Vishva Hindu Parishad, Bharatiya Jana Sangh/Bharatiya Janata Party, Rashtriya Svayamsevak Sangh, Muslim organisations, Indian National Congress, Janata Dal. The thesis demonstrates the changes within Hinduism revealed by the Ayodhya campaign and, in doing so, describes its religious symbolism. Legal aspects of the Babri Mosque issue in independent India are also analysed and possible scenarios of conflict resolution explored. The thesis illustrates the importance of the issue in the context of the country’s overall development and its central political trends since 1947.

Full textIn Bolivia, the great celebration of Jesús del Gran Poder, mobilizes every year the entire city of La Paz. The morenada, main dance of this ritual, stages characters with black faces, wearing heavy, opulent and disproportionate costumes. These ostentatious body-objects are moved by the dancers, creating an intricate aesthetic of wealth and abundance. The morenada is performed by an urban population of artisans and traders of rural Aymara background. They painstakingly build the socio-economic success that allows them to establish themselves in town. Based upon an ethnography of the morenada dancers’ bodily practices, during the preparation and realization of their performance, this work intends to show that dance can be a powerfull tool for understanding how individual positions and collective identities are constantly reshaping. Indeed, in the space of morenada, economic, bodily and devotional beliefs and practices, interact to transform each other. At a broader scale, this work questions the way bodily and social dynamics contribute to invent a specific relationship to prosperity: dance is not only the expression of urban success, but its measure and condition
