Abstract:

Abstract Bortezomib (V) and thalidomide (T) exert their anti-myeloma (MM) action partly through perturbation of the MM microenvironment. The aim of this phase II study was to determine the efficacy and safety of the combination of VT with melphalan (M) and dexamethasone (D) and its effect on angiogenesis and bone remodeling in relapsed/refractory MM. Bortezomib (1.0 mg/m2) was given iv, on days 1, 4, 8, and 11; oral melphalan (0.15 mg/kg) was administered on days 14, while thalidomide (100 mg/day) and dexamethasone (12 mg/m2) were given on days 1–4 and 17–20 of a 28-day cycle, for 4 cycles. Patients without progression continued for up to 8 cycles. Effect of VMDT on angiogenesis was evaluated by measuring serum levels of VEGF, angiogenin (ANG), angiopoietin-2 (ANGP-2), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) at baseline and after 4th and 8th cycle. Bone remodeling was studied by the measurement of serum indices:osteoclast stimulators [sRANKL, osteoprotegerin (OPG), osteopontin, MIP-1α],osteoblast inhibitor, dickkopf-1 (DKK-1),bone resorption markers [C-telopeptide of collagen type-I (CTX), tartrate resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRACP-5b)], andbone formation markers [bone alkaline phosphatase (bALP), osteocalcin (OC), and CICP].Among 60 pts registered in this study, 53 have completed 4 courses of therapy as of June 2006 and form the basis for the current analysis. Median time from 1st treatment to VMDT was 36 months. The median number of previous treatments was 2 (range: 1–7). Prior agents included V (11%), M (43%), D (100%), T (56%), and ASCT (30%). The objective response rate was 60%(32/53 pts): CR 11%, vgPR 26% and PR 22%. Furthermore, 6 pts (11%) achieved a MR and 8 SD. Median time to response was 35 days. Median PFS was 9.5 months with a median follow-up period of 12 months. Adverse events included fatigue (58%), thrombocytopenia (20% grade 3/4), neutropenia (8% grade 3/4), anemia (5% grade 3), neuropathy (50% grade 1/2, and 7% grade 3), infections (45%, including 5 HZV cases), and hyponatremia (15%). No patient experienced DVT, while 2 pts died due to sepsis and one due to necrotizing fasciitis. At baseline, MM patients had increased serum levels of DKK-1, sRANKL, sRANKL/OPG ratio, MIP-1α, CTX, VEGF, ANG, ANGP-2, and bFGF (p<0.01) compared with controls (n=36), while serum levels of bALP, and OC were reduced (p<0.0001). DKK-1, sRANKL, sRANKL/OPG ratio, MIP-1α, CTX and all angiogenic cytokines were reduced significantly after 4 and 8 cycles of VMDT. Reduction (%) of RANKL correlated with reduction (%) of VEGF (p=0.003) and MIP-1α(p=0.04), while reduction (%) of VEGF also correlated with (%) changes of DKK-1 (p=0.01), ANG (p=0.005), and ANGP-2 (p=0.04). Only CTX reduction was greater in responders, while all other alterations of studied biochemical indices were observed irrespective of treatment response. In conclusion, VMDT has significant activity in relapsed/refractory MM, with manageable toxicities. Furthermore, this regimen reduces serum cytokines that are involved in the interaction between myeloma and stromal cells.

Abstract:

Op het moment dat ik deze column schrijf, lijkt het erop dat in het nieuwe regeerakkoord ingrijpende bezuinigingen op het (centrale) ambtenarenapparaat zullen worden voorgesteld. Hoewel het verleden wat betreft de daadwerkelijke implementatie van dergelijke voornemens een beeld oproept van het spreekwoord 'eerst zien, dan geloven', zou ik op basis van eigen observatie twee suggesties willen doen om negatieve effecten hiervan tegen te gaan. In de eerste plaats zou het helpen indien Kamerleden minder zinloze Kamervragen zouden stellen. De 'winkelbel' (zoals ambtenaren in Den Haag de hectiek die met dergelijke vragen gepaard gaat, aanduiden) legt namelijk een groot beslag op de werktijd van beleidsambtenaren. Nog meer zou het echter helpen als voor de duur van de komende kabinetsperiode een moratorium op reorganisaties zou gelden. Ik verbaas mij regelmatig over het gemak waarmee men in Den Haag reorganiseert. Het feit dat dit vaker gebeurt dan in de marktsector is opmerkelijk, zeker gezien de negatieve effecten op bijvoorbeeld arbeidsproductiviteit en commitment. Wat mij betreft is er mede daarom alle reden voor onderzoekers om systematischer aandacht aan ambtenaren te besteden. Velen zullen verrast zijn door de dynamiek op dit terrein. De rest van deze column gebruik ik daarom om een aantal relevante vraagstukken te behandelen. Nog niet zo lang geleden was deze wereld voor een onderzoeker relatief eenvoudig. Er waren werknemers, ambtenaren en trendvolgers. Als ik naar de codeboeken van veel huidig surveyonderzoek kijk, dan lijkt het erop alsof sommigen denken dat dit nog steeds een valide indeling is. Niets is echter minder waar. Voormalige publieke organisaties zijn geprivatiseerd (KPN en TPG), verzelfstandigd (zoals veel openbaarvervoerbedrijven), op afstand geplaatst (zoals veel 'zelfstandige bestuursorganen' (zbo's), bijvoorbeeld het UWV, Staatsbosbeheer of TNO.). Ook scholen en universiteiten nemen een speciale positie in (formeel zijn dit zogenaamde GWT's, maar dat is een afkorting die weinigen iets zal zeggen).

Abstract:

Deze bijdrage onderzoekt hoe in de Vlaamse literatuur van het prekoloniale België (1830-1885) verre streken en inheemse volkeren worden gepresenteerd. De focus ligt op de verbeelding van de ‘indianen’ uit de Noord- en Midden-Amerika, maar ook een tweetal teksten over ‘wildemannen’ op eilanden in de Stille Oceaan, worden besproken. Het doel is om te analyseren welke raciale opvattingen in deze teksten doorschemeren, en of en hoe ze de Vlaamse lezer hebben voorbereid op reële koloniale ondernemingen. De bijdrage vormt een aanvulling op ‘Het slechte geweten van Vlaanderen. Over het racisme van Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883)’ (WT 2021/2 en 2021/3). Niet langer de ontmoeting met migranten in Vlaanderen/België staat centraal, maar de ontmoeting die Vlamingen in verre streken hebben met ‘indianen’ in het wilde Westen en in tropische jungles. Behalve werk van Conscience worden ook teksten van Judocus Frans De Hoon, August Snieders en Guido Gezelle besproken. De ‘wildheid’ van de in de Vlaamse negentiende-eeuwse literatuur sterk geëxotiseerde ‘indiaan’ functioneert vooral als een (positief gewaardeerde) vorm van ongereptheid en kinderlijke goedheid. We krijgen slechts zelden te maken met bloeddorstige barbaren en des te meer met variaties op de zogenaamde nobele wilde. Daarbij valt op dat met name teksten uit de jaren 1840 en ‘50 een eerder ontluisterend beeld ophangen van de koloniale veroveringsdrang van Westerse mogendheden en de gevolgen hiervan voor de inheemse volkeren. Alleen voor het missiewerk van Europese ‘zwartrokken’ wordt systematisch een uitzondering gemaakt – hun positie wordt nooit bekritiseerd en hun arbeid in den vreemde wordt als heilzaam beschreven. Voorts wordt de lezer voortdurend uitgenodigd om medelijden te voelen met de door uitroeiing bedreigde ‘indiaan’, een topos dat wordt benut om een analogie uit te werken met de eveneens ‘bedreigde’ en ‘onderdrukte’ Vlaming (in het ‘Vlaamsvijandige’ België). Het lijkt erop dat het volk dat vanaf 1885 daadwerkelijk te maken krijgt met Belgische kolonialen – de inwoners van Congo-Vrijstaat – in de Vlaamse literatuur op minder sympathie kan rekenen dan de ‘indianen’. Het contrast is vooral frappant in het werk van Guido Gezelle, die zijn leven lang een grote fascinatie koesterde voor de oorspronkelijke Amerikanen, maar in het hart van Afrika geen greintje beschaving of zelfs maar een beetje nobelheid kon ontdekken. Pocahontas on Sumatra and other ‘Indian’ stories. Encounters with native peoples in nineteenth-century Flemish literature. This article analyses how faraway regions and native peoples were represented in the Flemish literature of the precolonial Belgian period (1830-1885), focusing primarily on the representation of the ‘Indians’ (Native Americans) from North- and Meso-America, but also analysing two texts in which ‘savages’ from Pacific islands figure. The aim is to research which racial conceptions permeated these texts, and if or how these conceptualizations prepared the Flemish reader for the future colonial enterprises. This article is an extension of earlier published research on the topic (‘Het slechte geweten van Vlaanderen. Over het racisme van Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883)’ (WT 2021/2 en 2021/3). In this contribution however, it is not the engagement with migrants in Flanders/Belgium that takes center stage, but the encounters between Flemish and ‘Indians’ in faraway regions like the Wild West and tropical jungles, relying on the works of not only Hendrik Conscience, but also other Flemish authors such as Judocus Frans De Hoon, August Snieders, and Guido Gezelle. The “primal” nature of the “Indian” (who figured as an “exotic” idealtype in nineteenth-century Flemish literature) is primarily presented in a positive light as pertaining an unadulterated nature and childlike tenderness. Consequently, the literature only rarely entails bloodthirsty barbarians, but generally includes a number of variations of the so-called “noble savage”, with texts from the 1840s and 1850s in particular presenting a disheartening picture of Western Powers’ colonial and imperial conquests and their consequences for native peoples – with the one exception for the European “blackskirts” (missionaries), whose missionary work abroad was exempt from criticism and presented as wholesome. Moreover, the reader is constantly requested to feel remorse about the “endangered Indian”, a literary trope that is simultaneously being used to form an analogy with the Flemish who are also represented as being “endangered” and “oppressed” (by an “anti-Flemish” Belgium). Starting from 1885, it does seem that the people that does effectively encounter Belgian colonials – the inhabitants of ‘Congo Free State’ – elicit much less sympathy in Flemish literature than the “Indians”. The contrast is most striking in the works of Guido Gezelle, who maintained a lifelong fascination for the Native Americans, but did not endow a shred of civility or nobleness to the people in the heart of Africa.

Abstract:

Manmade wetlands provide many services that contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation.Some groups of people, particularly those living near wetlands, are highly dependent on these services andare directly harmed by their degradation. We assessed overall ecological condition of two lentic and onelotic wetlands present in the periphery of Sambalpur town, Odisha, India. Wetland macrophytes weresampled through 1x1m2 quadrates and water quality parameters were studied following âGuide manual:water and wastewater analysisâ by CPCB and APHA (1998)â. In the phytosociological study, 43 species ofmacrophytes were recorded belonging to 20 families in the 3 study sites. Both the lentic wetlands showedhighest diversity indices in postmonsoon period with emergent plants outnumbering free floating andsubmerged plants. This indicated that the hydrodynamic forces in lentic wetlands were not enough touproot the emergent plants. The present work showed that macrophytic diversity being negatively correlatedby all most all water quality parameters studied indicating considerable anthropogenic impact on thesesystems. Further PCA biplot showed large positive loadings on component 1 by water conductivity, TSS,TDS, NO3, and BOD that caused regionalization of three wetlands namely Durgapali pond (Site I), Kanjhurinalia/ canal (Site II), and Gobindtola canal (Site III) of Sambalpur town indicating differential antropogenicimpact as per their need. The study emphasized on immediate management of these wetlands specificallythe small lotic wetlands for promoting water health.

Abstract:

Cette thèse porte sur les conceptions et dynamiques du pouvoir parmi les Andoque de l’Amazonie colombienne, interrogeant comment celles-ci sont façonnées et se manifestent au sein de la population autochtone, avec les entités non humaines, et avec les agents non-autochtones. En nous fondant sur la littérature portant sur la continuité entre les relations humaines et non humaines dans l’animisme et sur la familiarisation et la maîtrise en tant que modes asymétriques de socialité en Amazonie, nous définissons le pouvoir dans un cadre d’échange et l’étudions au-delà du domaine du leadership et de l’arène politique. Nous démontrons que le pouvoir se manifeste dans la capacité des agents humains et non humains à transformer des relations symétriques d’échanges de corps, de principes vitaux, de biens matériels et d’actions en relations asymétriques qui profitent à leurs efforts pour produire des personnes, tout en contrebalançant les déséquilibres adverses. Le pouvoir provient de et facilite la transformation de parents affins potentiellement dangereux en parents consanguins plus bienveillants, et se manifeste dans la capacité de refuser ou de suspendre l’échange et de participer à la transaction en tant qu’agent, plutôt qu’objet échangé. Couvrant les domaines de la politique, de l’économie, de la parenté, du mythe et du rituel, notre analyse peut être distillée à des échanges au sein de trois domaines conceptuels : ontologique, de parenté et spatial. Dans le domaine ontologique, les échanges sont enracinés dans le principe animiste d’une intériorité partagée entre des êtres aux formes corporelles distinctes. Cette intériorité conduit à une substitution réciproque par défaut de personnes d’un type pour celles d’un autre. En revanche, les individus capables se livrent à des manipulations ontologiques pour créer une asymétrie avec les non-humains en imposant un échange hétérosubstitutif, dans lequel ils compensent le gibier avec des substances végétales, ou en exploitant l’homosubstitution dans les assauts de sorcellerie, transformant les victimes humaines en proie. La manipulation ontologique est étroitement liée à l’agentivité graduée, qui devient apparente dans les pratiques et les imageries de parenté. Dans ce contexte, malgré les principes de parenté cognatique des Andoque, leurs fortes identités claniques favorisent les tentatives d’asymétrie dans les relations entre les clans. La descendance agnatique est associée à une plus grande agentivité en comparaison avec les parents non agnatiques, les non-parents et les non-humains. Chez les humains, une agentivité diminuée ressemble à des états de domination, tandis que chez les non-humains, elle peut être parallèle, mais ne pas équivaloir à l’objectification du naturalisme. Enfin, le pouvoir est ancré dans les perceptions spatiales. Les Andoque se considèrent comme les habitants du centre d’un monde orienté sur le cours du fleuve, résultant dans la division de l’espace environnant en amont et en aval. En utilisant des procédures de familiarisation et d’englobement, ceux qui vivent au centre s’appuient sur des forces et des éléments associés à la source du fleuve pour leur survie et leur prospérité parmi les centres humains et non humains rivaux. L’englobement caractérise également la relation du centre avec l’embouchure – un domaine affinal représentant les personnes non-autochtones. Ce cadre spatial encapsule des trajectoires historiques où les échanges asymétriques entre les Andoque et les agents non-autochtones redéfinissent les dynamiques de pouvoir entre les premiers et les êtres non humains. Notre recherche fait progresser les études sur le continuum relationnel humain-non humain en Amazonie, établissant le pouvoir à la fois comme le résultat et l’instrument pour un enchaînement de relations symétriques et principalement asymétriques, et démontrant l’entrelacement des dynamiques de pouvoir entre les humains et les non-humains et celles entre les autochtones et non-autochtones
This dissertation investigates the shaping and manifestation of power notions and dynamics among the Andoque of Northwest Amazonia, Colombia, through three types of entanglements: within the Indigenous population, with nonhuman entities in the Andoque territory, and with non-Indigenous agents. Building on literature on the continuity between human and nonhuman relations in animism and on familiarization and mastery as asymmetrical relational frameworks in Amazonia, I explore power beyond the realm of leadership and the public political arena, and define it within a context-transcending framework of exchange. I demonstrate that power is manifested in the capacity of both human and nonhuman agents to transform their relationships from symmetrical exchanges of bodies, vital principles, material goods, and action into asymmetrical ones that benefit their efforts to produce persons, while countering adversarial imbalances. Power stems from and facilitates the conversion of potentially harmful affinal relatives into safer, more benevolent consanguineal kin, and manifests in the capacity to refuse or suspend exchange and to participate in the transaction as its agent, rather than the transacted object. Spanning the fields of politics, economy, kinship, myth and ritual, my analysis can be narrowed into exchanges within three conceptual domains: ontological, kinship, and spatial. In the ontological domain, exchanges are rooted in the animist principle of shared interiority among beings with distinct bodily forms. This shared interiority leads to a default reciprocal homosubstitution of persons of one kind for those of another. Meanwhile, capable individuals engage in ontological manipulations to create asymmetry with nonhumans by enforcing heterosubstitutive exchange, in which they compensate for game with vegetal substances, or exploiting homosubstitution in sorcery assaults, transforming human victims into prey. Ontological manipulation is closely related to graded agency, which becomes apparent in kinship practices and imagery. Here, despite the Andoque’s cognatic kinship principles, their strong clan identities foster attempts at asymmetry in inter-clan relations. Agnatic descent is associated with higher agency over non-agnatic kin, non-kin, and nonhumans. In humans, diminished agency resembles states of domination, while in nonhumans, it can parallel—but does not equate to—the objectification seen in naturalism. Finally, power is anchored in spatial perceptions. The Andoque consider themselves as living at the center of a world axed upon the river’s course, resulting in the division of surrounding space into upriver and downriver. Using procedures of familiarization, appropriation, and encompassment, those living at the center draw upon forces, elements, and mythical figures associated with the river source for their survival and prosperity amid rival human and nonhuman centers. A similar pursuit of encompassment characterizes the center’s relationship with the river mouth—an affinal realm representing non-Indigenous people. This spatial framework encapsulates historical trajectories where asymmetrical exchanges between the Andoque and non-Indigenous agents redefine power dynamics between the former and nonhuman beings.My research pushes forward the research into the human-nonhuman relational continuum in Amazonia, establishing power as both the outcome of and the instrument for an enchainment of symmetrical and predominantly asymmetrical relationships, and revealing the interplay between power dynamics of human-nonhuman relations and those between Indigenous and non-Indigenous agents

Abstract:

L'obsidienne manufacturée est présente dans de nombreux gisements préhispaniques d'équateur et du sud-ouest de la Colombie. Cette roche volcanique de la famille des rhyolites est le produit d'un volcanisme dit acide, par nature limite à certaines régions du globe. Dans les Andes équatoriales l'obsidienne propre à la taille n'est disponible que dans certaines zones des cordillères notamment la Cordillère royale (Équateur) et la Cordillère centrale (Colombie). Par conséquent, à l'exclusion des quelques secteurs ou elle affleure naturellement l'obsidienne ne doit sa présence dans les gisements archéologiques qu'à un réseau de circulation et d'échanges anthopique. Nous avons tenté de reconstituer ce réseau en exploitant la capacité qu'offre l'obsidienne d'être caractérisée par un grand nombre de méthodes physico-chimiques. Trois ont été employées : les traces de fissiion de l'uranium (TF), (datation), le pixe (géochimie), et l'icp-ms/aes (géochimie). Les TF permettent de connaitre l’âge de formation de l'obsidienne, le pixe fournit sa composition chimique sur 13 éléments et l'icp-ms/aes sur 36 éléments. La comparaison des âges et des compositions obtenus sur le mobilier archéologique d'une part et les sources de matière première d'autre part a mis en évidence l'utilisation privilégiée de 5 sources d'obsidienne à l'échelle des Andes équatoriales entre 3. 500 av. -J. -C. Et 1. 500 A. D. , dont deux sont des "zones-sources". " L'interprétation des données analytiques en fonction de l'inventaire que nous avons réalisé des gisements utilisateurs et des gites de matière première existant, offre une première vue générale de la variation diachronique de l'utilisation de l'obsidienne dans cette partie des Andes. Des cellules de diffusion culturelles et géographiques ont été clairement identifiées-dont certaines furent alimentées par de la matière première de provenance inconnue. Pour les sources de matière première connues nos données confirment en Équateur l'existence de systèmes d'échanges cote/sierra, pour lesquels nous proposons quelques itinéraires probable de circulation du matériau.

Abstract:

Mit der Fadenfigur (string figure) des Schmetterlings, dessen altgriechisches Wort für "Atem" und "Seele" steht, beziehe ich mich auf die Fotografie von LaToya Ruby Frazier und speziell auf die Serie "The Notion of Family" in einer Weise, die Atemlosigkeit in eine mediale Ökologie der Luft verwandelt, so dass der Atem Schwarzes Leben denkbar machen kann, wo es zuvor als unmöglich zu überleben angenommen wurde. Mit dem Schmetterling möchte ich die durch Nekropolitik, Umweltrassismus und rassistische Medizin kaum wahrnehmbaren Schwingungen in der Fotografie aufspüren und vergrößern, so dass die Ursachen des Flügelschlags, so winzig sie im Schmetterlingseffekt sind, die Bedingungen der Interaktion zwischen den Elementen so verändern, dass sie am Ende massive, aber unvorhergesehene Auswirkungen haben, wie ein Orkan, wie eine dekoloniale Explosion. Dabei geht es nicht darum, den Schmetterling zu imitieren, wie Donna Haraway schreibt: Es geht darum, einen "fleischlichen Vorschlag" zu machen, der, verwoben mit der Überzeugung, dass andere Praktiken des akademischen Wissens erforscht werden müssen, Schwarze, Braune und Indigene Zukünfte in der Gegenwart greifbar zu machen. So kommt es - wie wir sehen werden - zu einem Registerwechsel bei der Betrachtung der Fotografie, die in Fraziers Werk Anklänge an die sozialdokumentarische Darstellung aufweist und den Blick auf rassifizierte Prekarität zunächst mit Mitgefühl oder solidarischer Identifikation verbindet. Aber nur im ersten Moment. Schon im zweiten werden entsprechende Gefühle und Identifikationen konterkariert, so dass wir uns im Orientierungsrahmen der einstudierten Parameter der Blick-Theorie verlieren. Stattdessen bin ich fleischlich involviert und affektiv angesprochen in der Fotografie als mediatisierter Umgebung, sodass ich eher mitschwinge und vibriere als mich als weiß situierte Betrachter*in im Modus der Aneignung zu identifizieren. Zumindest in der Vibration sehe ich eine Chance für eine mediale Ökologie der Luft, die ein Ein- und Ausströmen ermöglicht und, assoziiert mit dem Flügelschlag eines Schmetterlings, auch als eine dekoloniale Ästhetik der Turbulenz verstanden werden kann.

Abstract:

Development of earlywood and latewood fibres was investigated to find out how morphologically different fibres undergo delamination. Fibre fractions rich in earlywood and latewood, were separated from mechanical pulps using a hydrocyclone and refined further in awing defibrator. Changes in fibre structure due to defibration were studied using microscopy techniques that included measurement of fibre stiffness, fibre wall thickness and external fibre surface. Before refining, the latewood fibres were stiff and their external fibre wallswere poorly developed. Refining reduced the stiffness of both fibre types. The stiffness of latewood fibres decreased to around that of unrefined earlywood fibres, andthe external walls of latewood fibres became fibrillated. The wall thickness of both earlywood and latewood fibres was reduced only slightly. Although the tensile and tear indices of sheets made of late wood fibres were improved by refining, the tensile index of flexible latewood fibres was only half of that measured for unrefined earlywood fibres. This indicates that there are fibre properties other than stiffness which must be changed in order to get latewood fibres to bond and conform properly.

Abstract:

In Nederland en omringende landen zijn in de afgelopen jaren en decennia verschillende projecten gerealiseerd rond decentrale innovatieve concepten voor afvalwaterbehandeling en gebruik van re-genwater. Om gemeenten, waterschappen en andere belanghebbenden een rationele grondslag te bieden voor keuzes m.b.t. de inrichting van de stedelijke waterketen (wel of niet decentraal, wel of niet brongescheiden), is in dit KIEM project de potentie en beperkingen onderzocht van nieuwe en circulaire sanitatieconcepten, zoals brongescheiden sanitatie en lokaal (her)gebruik van regenwater op woonwijk schaal. De vraag is wat we kunnen leren van ervaringen bij gerealiseerde projecten, en welke rationele basis er is om, met name bij nieuwbouwplannen, een trendbreuk teweeg te brengen in de richting decentrale oplossingen voor waterzuivering en waterhergebruik op wijkniveau, als al-ternatief voor de huidige, centrale systemen. Daartoe zijn negen verschillende gerealiseerde pro-jecten, operationeel op praktijkschaal, verkend aan de hand van literatuurstudie, data-analyse, inter-views, enquêtes en scenarioberekeningen. Verschillende prestatie-indicatoren, o.a. met betrekking tot terugwinning van grondstoffen, waterkwaliteit, hergebruik en kosten zijn inzichtelijk gemaakt. Bo-vendien is onderzoek gedaan naar de acceptatie van burgers m.b.t. governance structuren (top-down versus bottom-up) als het gaat om de stedelijke waterketen en diensten m.b.t. waterlevering en wa-terbehandeling.Uit dit verkennende onderzoek is gebleken dat alternatieve systemen (brongescheiden sanitatie met vacuümriolering en lokaal gebruik van regenwater) voor toiletspoeling, evt. tuin en wasmachine tot substantieel minder gebruik van drinkwater leiden. Bovendien wordt met separate inzameling en be-handeling van zwart- en grijswater de terugwinning van nutriënten (N, P, C) gestimuleerd en is er bij decentrale behandeling van grijswater jaarrond aanvoer van schoon water wat met name in droge periodes meerwaarde heeft. Daarentegen leiden systemen op wijkschaal, mede vanwege de relatief kleine schaal, tot relatief hoge financiële kosten, d.w.z. in vergelijking met de kosten voor aanleg en beheer van reguliere systemen. Daarbij wordt benadrukt dat vergelijking van kleine, decentrale sys-temen met de huidige, grootschalige centrale (afval)watersystemen lastig is vanwege de relatief ge-ringe hoeveelheid data die beschikbaar is m.b.t. prestatie-indicatoren van decentrale systemen. We kunnen daarom slechts voorlopige en minder harde uitspraken doen over een aantal prestaties van decentrale concepten, bijv. m.b.t. waterkwaliteit. Bovendien is de beoordeling van prestatie-indicato-ren problematisch vanwege ongelijksoortigheid. De huidige grootschalige systemen zijn goeddeels uit-ontwikkeld (innovatie was gericht op kostenefficiency), terwijl decentrale, nieuwe vormen van sani-tatie nog volop in ontwikkeling zijn, met duurzaamheid als drijfveer.Aandachtspunten en vragen liggen met name op het gebied van governance. In de huidige inrichting en organisatie van de waterketen zijn de verantwoordelijkheden, beleidsontwikkeling en operatie in-stitutioneel geborgd en sectoraal verdeeld (waterbedrijf, gemeente en waterschap). Nieuwe vormen van sanitatie en gebruik van regenwater op wijkschaal brengen de noodzaak tot vergaande samen-werking en nieuwe vraagstukken met zich mee.Om de prestaties van grootschalige, centrale systemen m.b.t. afvalwaterbehandeling en watervoor-ziening beter te kunnen vergelijken met decentrale systemen op wijkschaal wordt aanbevolen om gelijktijdig te innoveren op beide schalen, waarbij de innovatie (ook op grote, centrale schaal) gericht is op klimaatadaptatie en aansluiting bij de circulaire economie. Belangrijk daarbij is langjarige data-verzameling en monitoring, zodat de integrale prestaties van concepten en systemen kunnen worden gevolgd, beoordeeld en verbeterd, in de context van integrale duurzaamheid. Daarnaast wordt aan-bevolen om, indien mogelijk, decentrale (afvalwater)systemen op wijkniveau op te schalen naar een grootte van minimaal 3.000 inwoners, om het (op berekeningen gebaseerde) veronderstelde break-evenpoint (kosten decentraal vergelijkbaar met grootschalige, centrale systemen) in de praktijk te ve-rifiëren. Gerealiseerde projecten, bijv. Reitdiep in Groningen of Waterschoon in Sneek, kunnen wor-den benut voor verdere innovatie gericht op kringloopsluiting en circulaire economie.
