Abstract:
This study aims to determine the extent of the role of women as wage earners in the family as horticulture traders in Modoinding Sub-District. This research was conducted in October 2019 until January 2020. The data used in this study are primary and secondary data. Sample selection method used the purposive sampling. Primary data collection was obtained through direct interviews using a questionnaire to 13 respondents, who are married, still have a husband and are a native of Modoinding. Secondary data were obtained from literature, official sources from related institutions, and other sources related to this research. Data analysis used the calculation of wife's income as horticultural traders, husband and children. The results showed that, the income of women horticultural traders could add to the economy in the family. The income earned by women horticultural traders per month is IDR. 1,500,000 - up to IDR. 5,500,000, - with work time per day from 8 hours to 17 hours. More income was generated from the wife's income as a trader with more time spent by the wife than the husband. So it can be said that the wife is the main breadwinner in the family. The research was 60% of children with income less than IDR. 2,000,000 - Income of more than IDR. 2,000,001 to IDR. 3,000,000 a month wass 20%, and income above IDR. 4,000,001 a month was 20%.*eprm*

Abstract To start such a topic as this, one could turn to a dictionary to define “networking.” Personally, I like to refer to the comics—in this instance the comic strip “Nancy”. The first frame finds Nancy, in class, turned around in her seat earnestly talking to another young colleague. In the next frame Nancy has turned in response to the teacher asking her if she was talking. Nancy replies, “Talking? No Ma'am, I'm not talking. I'm establishing contacts and exchanging information with my peers.” The middle frame shows Nancy grumbling, “OK, whatever you say… ” and the final frame of the comic shows Nancy, at her desk, busily writing “I will not network in class, I will not network in class, I will not network in class.” Yes, some of the terms may have changed, but the point is still why network or, more specifically, why join a formal network or a group that networks?

Abstract:
Persons ≥60 years of age comprise a significant and growing segment of the U.S. population. More than one half of the elderly are female, and as age increases, the ratio of women to men increases as well. Gardening has long been known to be beneficial to older adults physically and psychologically. Our quantitative objective was to investigate the relationship between gardening and life satisfaction, self-esteem, and locus of control of elderly women. Our qualitative objective was to investigate the motivations to garden and the personal, self-rated benefits of gardening experienced by older women. About 45 participants were chosen from 1) volunteers in a horticultural therapy program, 2) participants in a community gardening project for older adults, and 3) participants in a community health project. During the first of two interviews, the participants completed survey instruments measuring self-esteem, locus of control, and life satisfaction. They also provided brief information about their gardening history along with demographic variables of age, ethnicity, educational background, and income level. During the second interview, the participants expanded on their experiences as gardeners, relating information such as how they became gardeners, how they learned to garden, and what factors influenced them to continue gardening. They were specifically asked to relate how they have personally benefited from gardening. Results examine the relationship between gardening and the psychological well-being of the older women.

Abstract:
In 2011, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick, NJ, USA) and Akdeniz University (Antalya, Turkey) conducted a survey to identify needs, interests, and capacities of Turkish women farmers. We interviewed extension educators and female farmers in three villages and used the results to develop a pilot, 28-hour course to train 40 small-scale citrus (Citrus sp.) and greenhouse producers from Kumluca, Turkey. Training included computer literacy, citrus and greenhouse production, and business management. The municipalities of Elmali, Duzce, Korkuteli, and Boztepe, Turkey, duplicated the successful pilot program within the next 2 years. To expand the training to more women farmers, we partnered with colleagues in Germany, Spain, and Malta to develop Empowering Women Farmers with Agricultural Business Management Training (EMWOFA), which had a multiplier effect by training educators who then trained women farmers to improve their business skills. The outputs of EMWOFA were a training manual for educators, a workbook for the women farmers, and e-learning videos in English, Turkish, Spanish, German, and Maltese.

Abstract:
This article provides an ethnographic analysis of the agency of women who reside in the rural areas of the Argentine Pampas, based on their promotion and production of agroecological family horticulture. The recognition of these women’s agency through care – care of their children, global care, and green care – offers a significant challenge to some metrocentric and Eurocentric feminist perspectives that claim care work can only be oppressive for women. The first of these types of care empowers women to improve the nutrition of their children. It also relates to another underlying type of care, which is to provide a sufficiently robust education as to ensure their children have a better and alternative future. The second type of care has the power to socially transform the territorial space of the district’s countryside and its marginalized populations which, through care, acquire greater public and political attention. The third type of care empowers women to transform and care for the environment, and is exercised by not using pesticides in horticultural production and by disseminating knowledge on the matter. In line with discussions of postcolonial feminism (Abu-Lughod, 1986; Mahmood, 2001; Suárez Navaz, 2008), I argue that certain properties that are attributed to women relative to caregiving – by way of a dichotomous view of gender relations – fuel their agency: for these women the cultivation of vegetables is a form of agency that actively combats food, training and labor inequality.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to assess the physical and psychological health benefits of a 15-session gardening intervention in elderly women and to investigate satisfaction of the gardening intervention. Fifty elderly women (age >70 years) at two senior community centers located in Seoul, South Korea, were selected to participate in this study. Twenty-four elderly women at senior community center “A” participated in a twice-weekly gardening intervention (≈50 minutes per session) during the period Sept. to Nov. 2015; 26 elderly women at senior community center “B” comprised a control group. At the completion of the 15-session gardening intervention, physical health parameters such as body composition, physical functional ability, and hand function ability were assessed in both groups. Additionally, psychological health conditions, such as cognitive ability, depression, and sociality, were assessed. The elderly women also answered a questionnaire to assess the amount of physical activity experienced during daily life. Elderly women in the gardening intervention group exhibited significantly improved muscle mass, aerobic endurance, hand dexterity, cognitive ability, and decreased waist circumference (P < 0.05). In contrast, significantly decreased muscle mass and agility and increased depression were observed in the control group (P < 0.05). Moreover, elderly women in the gardening intervention group reported a significantly higher amount of daily physical activity compared with those in the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, 95.8% of elderly women in the gardening intervention group reported of being very satisfied with the gardening intervention. In conclusion, the gardening intervention maintained and improved the physical and psychological health of elderly women at a senior community center, whereas elderly women in the control group experienced age-related reduced physical and psychological health conditions. More studies are needed to evaluate the effects of a gardening intervention in a larger population of elderly women; in addition, a longer intervention period would provide a better measure of health in elderly women.

Strong linkages among 2-year community colleges and 4-year universities are likely to foster the transition of more students into higher education and enhance student diversity. Two New Mexico educational institutions, Doña Ana Branch Community College (a 2-year community college) and New Mexico State University (a 4-year university), offered a landscape construction class as a joint course offering for students at both institutions. The objective of this educational approach was to develop a system that facilitates the seamless integration of compatible curricula from a community college and a university. Course evaluations showed that 63% of students enrolled in the combined class rated the combining of a university and community college class as an above average or excellent model of education. When asked to rate whether classroom materials and laboratory activities supported learning, 94% of the class rated those materials as excellent. Eighty-eight percent of students rated the presentation of subject matter as above average or excellent when asked if the subject matter was presented in an interesting manner. Students valued the experiential learning projects and would highly recommend the course to their peers. In this redesigned course, women and minorities constituted 63% of the class, suggesting that this educational approach has the potential to retain a large number of underrepresented groups in landscape horticulture. We conclude that this collaborative approach for teaching landscape horticulture is likely to enhance horticultural education and foster a seamless educational experience for students who transition from a community college to a university. Also, this educational approach could serve as a model for curricula that combine practical knowledge with advances in science and technology.

Abstract:
In Senegal, the growth of horticulture has been particularly rapid in the last decade or so, partly coinciding with the 2007–2008 ‘land rush’ and a boom in agricultural investment. This article analyses the implications of the rise in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the horticultural sector in northern Senegal. Specifically, it examines FDI’s effects on labour migration and the social reproduction of rural classes of labour through an intersectional feminist and gendered lens. It argues that invisibilised ‘care chains’ that overly burden women, and communities of solidarities, play a crucial role in the social reproduction of horticultural workers, most specifically migrant workers, and provide a subsidy to agrarian capital. Yet, capitalist development does not always translate to better wages and more inclusive laws and policies for horticultural wage workers and providers of caring labour who are adversely incorporated in these political economies. As a result, this requires further attention from policy-makers and political leaders. Using a combination of working-life histories and survey data gathered through two rounds of fieldwork over two years, and secondary data from relevant databases, this article focuses on the River Valley Region and Louga to analyse the emerging challenges of labour migration, social reproduction and caring labour in rural Senegal.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to identify existing gender roles in greenhouse vegetable production in the Antalya Province of Turkey. For this purpose, we conducted face-to-face interviews with the owners of 50 vegetable-producing greenhouses to understand the dominant household structures, activity profiles, information sources, training needs, access to resources, control over resources, and intrahousehold income stream. Activity profiles reflected the hours per day men and women spent on specific greenhouse production and household tasks. We observed access to and control of production resources as well as intrahousehold income streams for the two genders. Compared with men, women had higher illiteracy rates and lower levels of education. They also had overall heavier workloads despite having similar workloads in the greenhouse (productive activities), the difference resulting from household (reproductive activities) which were carried out mainly by women. Women received most agricultural information from neighbors, while men obtained most information from chemical salespeople. Notably, men received some information from the agricultural extension service, but women did not. Women also had less access to and control over productive resources. Furthermore, the intrahousehold income streams in the selected households benefited men more than women. In this study, we compared differences among three independent demographic variables: the age of producers, the level of education of the producers, and years of experience farming against women’s ability to prepare the family budget, spend money without asking her spouse, purchase of agricultural inputs, and select which vegetables to produce. Statistically significant links were found between women’s age and ability to manage the family budget, education level and ability to make purchase decisions, and years of production experience and ability to select which vegetables to purchase. The results of this study provide evidence for an unequal social structure and show that efforts should be made to increase women’s access to and control of production resources, including information from the extension service.

Abstract:
Women normally have two ovaries as part of their reproductive organs. The ovaries function by secreting the important reproductive hormone—estrogen which regulate the monthly menstrual cycle at puberty. Each ovary also produce the eggs that carry the female gametes required to fuse with the male sperm cells in the formation of foetus. One of the abnormalities of the ovaries that had been long recognized is the development of sacs with membranous wall enclosing fluid, semi-solid matter or altered blood described as ovarian cyst which alter the size of the ovaries and make them larger. This abnormality usually disorganize the regular monthly cycles along with other complications including pains and infertility in women. The causes for the development of ovarian cysts are not clearly understood while surgical operation had been the most popular method of treatment. There is ethno-medicinal evidence for the treatment of ovarian cysts in Nigeria which dates back to more than one hundred years This paper describes how 274 of clinically confirmed cases of ovarian cysts in women between the ages of 22-52 years were treated successfully without surgery at the NARL specialist clinic, Ibadan, Nigeria in the last 16 years (1988-2004) using natural plant medicines made with the fiber of Cocos nucifera and a few other tropical plants. The implications of this finding are discussed.

Abstract:
The Arunachal Pradesh region is one of the richest reservoirs of genetic variability and diversity of different crops i.e. various kinds of fruits, different vegetables, spices, ornamental plants and also medicinal and aromatic plants. The diversity for horticultural crops of this region has mainly been managed by local farmers, often women. Considerable diversity exists among the regional horticultural species including variation in plant type, morphological and physiological characteristics, reactions to diseases and pests, adaptability and distribution. Apart from the nutritional value, many regional horticultural crops are used for medicinal purposes and income generating source in the rural areas. The Arunachal Pradesh of States constitutes the District of West Kameng, Tawang, East siang, East Kameng, Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, Kurang Kumey, Upper Subansari, West siang, East siang, Upper siang, Dibang valley, Lower Dibang valley, Lohit, Anjaw, Changlang and Tirap. The raining season in this region generally commences from March and lasts till the end of September. Diverse agro–climate condition, fertile soils and abundance of rainfall offer immense scope for development in the horticulture sector. Annie’s Project: Farming in New Jersey’s Cities and the Urban Fringe focused on the following five areas of risk identified by the US Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service: financial, production, marketing/price, legal/institutional, and human/personnel. Additional education regarding urban farming topics included securing suitable land, dealing with contaminated soils and alternative growing medias, and securing water for crop production. We delivered a series of six 3-hour evening classes to 23 producers. We administered a retrospective evaluation at the conclusion of the series and distributed an evaluation survey 6 months after training. Both evaluations found that participants increased their understanding of farm risks. Furthermore, they indicated they were better able to manage the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their farm business activities.

Abstract:
Flower color is a dominant attribute of fresh flowers, likely playing a key role in purchase preference. Several prior studies showed flower color preference differed by gender, but other information on color preferences is sparse. Data for this study were collected by the Ipsos-National Panel Diary Group for the American Floral Endowment, which maintained an extensive panel of consumer transactions from 1992 to 2005, including floral purchases. Multinomial logit analysis of single-stem cut flower purchases showed that men and women differed in their cut flower color preferences but that flower color preference also varied with demographic characteristics and by occasion. We grouped colors into six categories: BluePurple, RedBronze, PeachPink, White, Yellow, and Other. The highest percentage of flowers purchased were RedBronze (34%), whereas the lowest percentage of flowers were Yellow (10.01%) with Other flower colors accounting for less than 5% of purchases. Although women used a more diverse color palette, both men and women were more likely to buy RedBronze flowers for an anniversary and buy PeachPink flowers for Mother's Day. Between 1992 and 2005, women were less likely to purchase PeachPink flowers and men were less likely to purchase RedBronze over time. Overall demand for BluePurple and Yellow flower colors increased over time, whereas the demand for other color categories decreased over time.

Abstract:
MGNREGA enacted in 2005 as a social safety net based on right based framework to provide unskilled wages and employment to the needy households has gradually incorporated innovative schemes for creation of long-term durable assets to enhance the livelihoods of the participating households and making them self-reliant. This paper attempts to explore the impact of Horticulture initiative on small holders, underprivileged women & tribal households, which was initiated by Government of Jharkhand in 2016. The secondary data was accessed from the official website of MGNREGA for further analysis. A questionnaire-based interview of sampled beneficiaries of Horticulture Scheme from two Districts of South Chhotanagpur division of Jharkhand was administered for primary information. Case studies have been incorporated for creating support evidence for the study. The study reveals that the Horticulture Scheme under MGNREGA, “Birsa Munda Baagwani Yojana” (BMBY) has significant impact on the life of unskilled workers who became the beneficiaries of this scheme. Inclusion of scheduled tribe and schedule caste to this scheme is significant. It has accommodated the marginal landholding households to be the beneficiaries. Provision of associated training and support from NGOs, CBOs and administration have increased the coverage and inclusion of the marginal section and also ensured the technical assistance to most of the beneficiaries.

Abstract:
Many physiologically active women after reaching the age of puberty suddenly discover that their menstruation becomes irregular with longer periods of heavier flow. This situation often arise when the womb is empty without conception for a long time. The uterus is found to contain some growing masses of tissues called fibroid which may be tiny, single, many or very big. They could occupy the lumen of the uterus and referred to as intra-uterine fibroids or could develop within the walls of the uterus or on the outside wall of the uterus. They alter the shape and size of the uterus in most cases. Intra-uterine fibroids grow in size and in several cases prevent conception in young women who are eager to get pregnant, thereby leading to frustration, and anxiety. The origin and cause of fibroids is not well understood. Ethno medicinal knowledge refer to fibroids as false pregnancy because women carrying fibroids are thought to be pregnant for several years without delivering the baby. Years of ethno medicinal research at the NARL Specialist Clinic, Ibadan, Nigeria led to the compounding of natural plants which include Calotropis sp, Citrus sp and a few tropical plants that have proved successful as a remedy for intra-uterine fibroids without surgery. The existing fibroid masses within the uterus gradually diminish in size, until they disappear completely The re-growth of fibroid masses within the uterus is suppressed or inhibited This will be helpful in many cases where women who have not reached menopause can have free uterine cavity devoid of fibroids especially when they are not pregnant for several years. The problem of infertility due to fibroids can also be avoided.

Abstract:
Consumer flower-color preferences are of interest to market researchers, plant producers, and retailers because this information can help them to anticipate accurately the sales product mix. Our objective was to determine consumer bract-color preferences for 47 poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch) cultivars. Visitors (124) to the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio, rated `Sonora', a red cultivar, highest (4.6 of 5.0) of any cultivar. Nine of ten highest rated cultivars were red. We compared the ratings of poinsettia buyers with those of nonpoinsettia buyers and found only one difference: nonpoinsettia buyers rated `Jingle Bells III', a marble cultivar, higher (4.3) than poinsettia buyers (3.8). We also compared consumers who had purchased a red poinsettia to those who had purchased nonred colors and found that red poinsettia buyers rated `Sonora' higher (4.9) than nonred poinsettia buyers (4.5). Men rated `Red Elegance' higher (3.7) than women (3.3), whereas women rated `Freedom White' higher (3.1) than men (2.4). We found few differences between men and women, buyers and nonbuyers, and nonred buyers and red buyers, which may indicate a relatively homogeneous market that does not greatly differentiate among poinsettia bract color.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a gardening intervention as a physical activity in women aged over 70 years. Twenty-one women aged over 70 years were recruited from the community in Seoul, South Korea. Eleven subjects at a senior community center participated in a 15-session gardening program (twice a week, average 50 minutes per session) from Sept. to Nov. 2015. The rest of the subjects who were recruited from another senior community center acted as the control group. Blood lipid profiles, blood pressure, inflammation in peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and oxidative stress were assessed by a blood test before and after the 15-session gardening intervention. The results showed that the subjects in the gardening intervention as a low- to moderate-physical activity had a significant improvement in their high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and the variables related to immunity such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) for inflammation in blood and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) expression for oxidative stress. The results of this study suggested that the 15-session gardening intervention as a low- to moderate-physical activity led to positive effects on the blood lipid profiles, blood pressure, level of inflammatory markers in blood, and oxidative stress of women aged over 70 years.

Abstract:
e24038 Background: Women who are diagnosed with gynecologic cancer experience a significant level of distress and symptoms that impact their quality of life. Recently, there has been an emphasis on quality of life for oncology patients. Non-pharmacological interventions such as therapeutic horticulture (TH) have been linked with enriching individual lives. TH is defined as the engagement of a person in gardening and plant-based activities, facilitated by a professionally registered horticultural therapist, to achieve specific treatment goals. The purpose this study is two-fold: 1) to determine the impact of TH on quality of life and anxiety for gynecologic oncology patients and 2) to test the feasibility and acceptability of implementing a pilot TH program for this specific patient population. Methods: This was an IRB approved study. Individuals were recruited from the oncology clinic. Inclusion criteria included adult women, age 18 and over, who were diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. They were included in the study independent of what stage they were in their cancer treatment. The intervention included attending eight 1-hour group-based gardening sessions that were led by a professionally registered horticultural therapist at Wilmot Botanical Gardens. Self-report psychometric assessments were administered to assess anxiety and quality of life before and after the intervention. Results: Over one month, ten patients were interested in the study. Due to limitations in funding, only seven were able to partake in the study. Three participants were able to complete the study in its entirety by attending eight out of the twelve sessions. Four participants were unable to complete at least eight sessions due to scheduling conflicts: one completed seven sessions and three completed less than five sessions. Given that only three patients completed the intervention, quantitative measures are not included. In the focus group at the end of the study, the three participants described the TH as engaging and felt that they were more physically active and mentally at peace. They felt that the sessions brought camaraderie amongst each other regardless of the number of sessions attended. Conclusions: While our participant accrual was limited, the study was noted to be feasible and acceptable with the sessions being overall helpful for well-being. Given the results from this study, more funding has been established for recruiting a larger cohort in Fall of 2023.

Abstract:
Women make up around half of India's population and are crucial to expanding the agricultural industry. We may state that women are the foundation of agriculture and related fields. As wage workers, farmers, co-farmers, farm managers, and family carers, women are vital to the agricultural industry. In addition to working in related fields like horticulture, cattle, and fishing, women also cultivate crops. According to the 2011 report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), there is a greater proportion of women working in the agriculture industry in Asian countries as compared to other regions. Women began collecting seeds from the local plants and growing those that caught their attention regarding food, feed, fodder, fiber, and fuel. According to estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), women generate between 60 and 80 percent of the food in underdeveloped nations. The study's main goal is to examine how women participate in family and agricultural decision-making. Research indicates that women are significant contributors to the decision-making process. 39.47 percent of female agricultural laborers receive assistance from their male partners in using fertilizers, 23.70 percent in purchasing agricultural equipment, and 57.90 percent in altering crop patterns.

Abstract:
Southern Africa is globally known for its considerable floristic diversity and for the past several centuries the region has attracted the research attention of both foreign and southern African botanists. While the majority of the plant scientists, including taxonomists, working on the regional flora was male, women have made significant contributions to the botany of southern Africa. We provide a comprehensive review of the role women played in botany in the region, from the earliest days of recorded botanical endeavour (c. mid-17th century) and for the ensuing c. 300 years. The women are exhaustively catalogued and the parts they played in advancing botany, and where appropriate some related plant-based activities, such as horticulture, are noted and assessed. It is shown that women played an important but generally underappreciated role in botanical research, fieldwork, and specimen collecting, as well as in herbarium management and institutional development.
