Abstract:
The ancient manuscript is one of Indonesia’s valuable cultural heritage. One of the primary sources of research, that presence is certainly worthy of appreciation because it also contributes to the development of the scientific realm. Research that utilizes ancient manuscripts as objects of study, has been carried out by many foreign and native scholars lately. But in reality, this ancient manuscript could not be accessed easily. This happened because these ancient manuscripts were not mas-produced and distributed, and there were minimal conservation efforts. Therefore the concern of the government of the nation’s assets is questionable. This paper confirms that efforts to preserve archipelago ancient manuscripts by Pustaka Nasional Republik Indonesia (PNRI) as representatives of the government, seem to be very slow and inefficient. Their conversation efforts appear to be more reactionary than visionary. So much of the knowledge contained in the archipelago from ancient manuscripts is lost together with the destruction of the ancient manuscripts themselves. The solution must be sought immediately, so that future generations can also enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage.

Abstract:
Manuscripts or commonly known as ancient manuscripts are one of the cultural heritage in the form of writing. In the past, ancient manuscripts were written using palm leaves, animal skins, paper, and even stone. When viewed from their physical form, ancient manuscripts are indeed more susceptible to damage due to their fragile nature when compared to other cultural heritages. Factors that can cause damage to ancient manuscripts include physical factors, chemical factors, user ignorance, natural disasters, vandalism, illegal buying and selling of manuscripts, damage by rodents (harmful insects, rats, and rodents), humidity factors, and so forth. Therefore, it is necessary to have activities or processes to be able to preserve ancient manuscripts, namely preservation. One of the preservation efforts to preserve ancient manuscripts is using digitization (the activity of converting ancient manuscripts into digital texts). Yayasan Sastra Lestari is an independent non-profit organization since 1997 that has been engaged in the rescue, preservation, and dissemination of regional literary works of the archipelago from ancient manuscripts to digital-based manuscripts and websites. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to find out how the manuscript preservation process by Yayasan Sastra Lestari is digital-based and website-based. In addition, this study also aims to find out the challenges, opportunities, and future of Yayasan Sastra Lestari in efforts to preserve digital manuscripts. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The method of data collection was done through observation and previous research. Observations were made through the official website of the Yayasan Sastra Lestari, which is located at www.sastra.org. The results showed that the digitization process of Yayasan Sastra Lestari went through two major stages, namely pre-digitalization which focused on transliteration and media transfer, and the post-digitization stage in the form of disseminating ancient manuscript information through the website. In addition, the challenges, opportunities, and future faced by Yayasan Sastra Lestari emphasize the external role (academics, teachers, scientists, communities, and others) in improving the quality of digital manuscript preservation.

The study of the Lampung script's forms and variations in ancient manuscripts is a branch of linguistics concerned with the script's evolution. We made observations on the Lampung script on two ancient manuscripts, the NLP97N69 and the Hahiwang. Both manuscripts are housed separately. The NLP97N69 manuscript was found in Indonesia, whereas the Hahiwang in Germany. A philological and paleographic approach was adopted to investigate the Lampung script's forms and variations in the ancient manuscripts. Both manuscripts were examined in conjunction with a presentation of the scriptwriter's Lampung script. After raising the Lampung script, it was compared to the current script and Van der Tuuk's script table. Discrepancies were found out between the characters in the two manuscripts, the contemporary script, and Van der Tuuk's table. Furthermore, the gha script was found out to be unique to the NLP97N69 manuscript. It was created in an attempt to meet the needs of Lampung language users who desired a unique script that incorporated the gha sound. This study demonstrates that the Lampung script has evolved and changed over time in response to its users' needs. Additionally, the article discusses the implications and future directions for research.

Abstract:
The Indonesian nation conserves many ancient manuscripts. The ancient manuscripts are spread out throughout Indonesia’s archipelago, even though the total numbers of the ancient manuscripts in each area are not the same. The ancient manuscripts may be treated as documents of a nation, due to the fact that the documents may be referred to as writings containing pertinent information.. Nowadays the teaching of history by utilizing ancient manuscripts are rarely conducted by teachers. However, it is necessary to have the efforts in comprehending the ancient manuscripts that any information of the past be passed to the current and future generations. The teaching of history based on scarce resources presents certain challenges to the teacher. In this country, history has been one of the core subjects in the curriculum, since elementary school, which leads to the question whether the teaching of history has been well operated? In fact, the teaching of history in many schools is merely the transferring the teacher’s knowledge to the students in class through one-way communications. The students have become passive objects that have the duties to memorize notes given by the teacher in order to respond to the questions that will be examined. This type of history teaching method has caused the history subject uninteresting. A successful method of teaching history shall be by constructing a ‘historical memory’ along with an ‘emotional memory’. The study of ancient manuscript on history teaching is one of the many methods that can instigate “emotional memory”. After students are provided with facts of history to construct “historical memory” in class, the emotional memory can be delved due to the study of ancient history. Various alternative methods in relation to the modification of history teaching are necessary to be developed. One of the methods that can be implemented is the capitalization of ancient manuscript for the History teaching, particularly for the development of the Nation’s Culture and Character.

The conservation of Ancient Sundanese manuscripts through transliteration training was motivated by concerns about the condition of the ancient Sundanese manuscripts that had been decayed so that they were unreadable because they were eaten by termites and were hit by time bombs. Such conditions can cause the contents information of the text cannot be extracted and conveyed to the next generation. Based on the above background, there is a need to organize an activity to provide training of the procedures in collecting, documenting, describing, and transliterating Sundanese manuscript written in Arab Pegon script into Latin script. The intended ancient Sundanese manuscript is a manuscript originating from an individual collection or those which are still scattered in the community. The target community is Sundanese language teacher community in Kabupaten Bandung. The approach used is a philological approach along with training and workshop methods. The results obtained revealed that Sundanese Language teachers in Kabupaten Bandung have a strategic role in preserving the Ancient Sundanese manuscript. Teachers have a very important role to provide information to the public about the preservation of ancient Sundanese manuscripts in the area where they live. The manuscripts from transliteration as well as studies that esteem the education of local cultural wisdom can be used as alternative teaching material in the school.

Abstract:
The Indonesian people still keep old manuscripts in considerable amounts. The distribution of ancient manuscripts is found in almost all regions of Indonesian archipelago, although the amount of ancient manuscripts in each region is not same. The old manuscript can also be expressed as a document of a nation, because the document defined as an article containing crucial information. Today, teaching history using an ancient manuscript still rarely carried out by the teachers. However, it needs an attempt to understand the ancient texts that all information about the past delivered to the present and the future generation. Teaching history that relies on scarce resources has brought new challenges for teachers. In this country, the history science has become one of the compulsory subjects in the curriculum, since elementary school there is a question, has history teaching has run well? In fact, teaching history in schools is more than a transfer of teachers’ knowledge to students in the classroom through the one-way communication. Pupil just become passive objects that have an obligation to memorize the teacher’s notes in order to answer the questions that will be tested. This kind of teaching history method has made history as a boring lesson. As for to make history teaching successful, the method used should be construct “historical memory” accompanied by “emotional memories”. Study of ancient texts in teaching history can be regarded as one of the methods that can lead to “emotional memories”. After students are given the facts of history to construct “historical memory” in the classroom, emotional memory can be explored by studying the ancient texts. Several alternative methods in relation to the modification of the teaching of history need to be developed. One method that researcher through think could be applied is the utilization of the ancient manuscript to the teaching of history, particularly for the development of Culture and National Character

Abstract:
Since ancient times, people have been using plants not only for a source of food, but also for a source of medicine. In the Malay culture, many ethnomedicinal plants are being used for various medicinal properties. This knowledge is recorded in many ancient Malay manuscripts that acknowledge many different local names of plants and its traditional uses and practices. This study will be discussing one of the ancient Malay manuscript named “Hikayat Nurul-lisan Menjawab Masalah” whereby the original work was written in Jawi alphabets. Fortunately, Harun Mat Piah in his book, “Kitab Tib Ilmu Perubatan Melayu” had transliterated the work to Latin alphabets and organised it to a better structure which makes the content readily accessible and easily interpreted for Malay researchers. The purpose of this study is to analyse and tabulate ethnomedicinal plants documented in the transliterated manuscript which mentioned gastrointestinal benefits. To attain the research objectives, qualitative thematic analysis will be employed on the manuscript in order to classify different themes in the text systematically. Among illnesses frequently mentioned in the manuscript are gastrointestinal related, such as digestion, bloating, diarrhea and others. The study highlights that there are 36 number of plants mentioned in the manuscript which relates to gastrointestinal diseases. There are many different practice of use, whereby some are with detailed explanation, and others very general. Some plants are mentioned as being used for the well-being of the digestive system. This study is imperative for comprehensively structuring the traditional knowledge obtained in the manuscript for easy reference and access to other researchers locally and internationally. Besides to enrich our traditional knowledge on ethnomedicinal plants, this research will indirectly serve to preserve one of an important Malay cultural heritage. This work is concerned with the analysis of historical manuscripts. The manuscripts investigated are partially in a bad condition, due to their age, bad storage conditions etc. These circumstances impede a transcription of the ancient writings, as well as the application of document image analysis methods. Therefore, the writings are imaged with a portable MultiSpectral Imaging acquisition system. By using this non-invasive investigation technique the contrast of the degraded and faded-out writings can be enhanced. In order to gain a further contrast enhancement, a post-processing method has been developed. Additionally, two document analysis methods have been developed in order to facilitate the work of scholars: First, an Optical Character Recognition is described. Second, a method designed for the automated identification of writers of ancient Slavic manuscripts is explained. This paper provides an overview on the manuscript investigation techniques mentioned.

Abstract. The manuscript that has been found in Ciamis Regency is 15 manuscripts, and only 3 manuscripts have been inventoried and clearly described the form and content. This proves there are still many ancient manuscripts that have not been identified by the agency or the researchers, so there is no picture of the form or content of the manuscript. Seeing the atti-tude of different owners of the manuscript, and still very minimal efforts to save the ancient man-uscripts physically the possibility of extinction manuscripts that are in the community is very large. One of the activities that support the preservation of cultural heritage is preservation by documenting. The purpose of this research is to know the status and condition of ancient manu-script in order to support documentation activity. The research method used is qualitative with the design of action research. The results showed that (1) Identify the existence of ancient manu-scripts scattered in Kabupaten Ciamis. (2) Identification of ancient manuscripts viewed from a socio-cultural point of view (3) Treatment of local people against ancient manuscripts. The con-clusion of this study is the status and condition of the ancient manuscripts in Ciamis Regency is still apprehensive because people's understanding of the importance of the ancient script for the continuity of cultural heritage is still low. Thus, further actions on the importance of loving the cultural heritage of our own country is needed, one of it documentation activities.

The Ladder of Divine Ascent of St. John Sinaites has been very popular among the Slaves in the Middle Ages. From the 14th century 66 manuscripts were kept, 29 of them are Serbian. Not less than seven ancient manuscripts are kept in the National Library of Serbia (in the collections of the monasteries of Decani and Pec and in the New collection). Two manuscripts are kept in the library of the University of Belgrade, in the collection of manuscripts Lesnovo monastery. Five Serbian manuscripts of the Ladder are kept in the Russian National Library (St. Petersburg). Three ancient Serbian books of the Ladder are kept in Moscow, in the Russian State Library. Six ancient Serbian manuscripts of the Ladder are kept in the libraries of Mount Athos: four in the Hilandar monastery and two in the Zograf monastery. Four manuscripts of the Serbian Ladder are kept in Bucharest, in the Library of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. One ancient manuscript is kept in Macedonia, in the Ohrid National Museum. One Serbian book of the Ladder is kept in Paris, in the Slavic Fund of the French National Library. Of course, the former number of ancient Serbian manuscripts of the Ladder was much more than 29. The Serbian manuscripts preserved all ancient Slavonic translations of the Ladder: Preslav (in two versions), Tarnovo, Serbian (in two versions) and Athos. The author gives a description of each manuscript, names its location, dating and the related manuscripts. The Ladder as a book has many components. The basics of this book are the Life of St. John Sinaites and his message to John of Raif and 30 homilies. In the Slavic tradition we added a lot of new texts to this, not Greek but Slavic. One of these texts is the dictionary ?Tolkovanie recem?. According to our observations, this dictionary appeared in the Serbian book culture not later than the second half of the 14th century. The text of this dictionary began to appear separately from the Ladder very early as a part of the ascetic Sammelbands. An example is a Sammelband of the library of the Hilandar Monastery, number 455. The text of this dictionary is in the appendix of the article.

Lontara Attorioloang ri Wajo is one of the ancient manuscripts of Bugis found in Sambas, West Kalimantan. Although ancient manuscripts have long been recognized as being important sources of physical and spiritual life for indigenous peoples, they have not been properly researched in academic discourse. The study of ancient manuscripts is still rarely done by historical researchers in West Kalimantan. In fact, the texts cover many issues including important aspects of human life such as religion, nation, and other human needs. This study focuses on the counselors, themes, and model of religious counseling presented in the manuscript Lontara Attorioloang ri Wajo. Content analysis is employed to discuss the text with regard to counseling figures, themes of religious counseling, and counseling model. The data indicates that the Arung Matoae (king) in Wajo Kingdom was an important counselor in the region. He practiced religious counseling that covered monotheism, leadership, human relations, and relationships to the universe. The King applied individual and group counseling for his religious counseling activities. This study offers new insight into religious counseling science as it has been practiced by people in the past as recorded in the manuscript. Past cultural track records can be restored with in-depth studies of the text which may lead to multi-disciplines that involve counseling experts, philologists, and historians collaborating to reveal further research findings.

Abstract:
This paper shows that the interrelationship between the texts is present in the ancient manuscripts of the archipelago. Babad Awak Salira (BAS) manuscript is a Sundanese manuscript which contains Islamic teachings. The amount of influence contained in Islamic teachings is presented in several stanzas that are bound by rules or meters. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis, with the use of an intertextuality approach in literary works. The analysis using the intertextuality approach shows that the BAS text has links with other texts; Javanese manuscripts and Islamic books. This paper resulted in the findings of several hipogram or text backgrounds that were “borrowed” in the compilation of BAS. At least 11 hipogram were found to be applied, by conversi, expansi, modification, or exerp. This paper shows that an intertextuality approach can be applied to old manuscript objects. Thus, an intertextuality approach will explore and derive borrowed forms from the background text or hipogram. The cultural linkages between Javanese and Sundanese can be recorded in a manuscript. It is seen from the text, that several Javanese macapat metrums are consistently carried over in the BAS manuscript.

Abstract In September, 2019, Anhui University published the first volume of Warring States bamboo-slip manuscripts in its collection. The bamboo slips were purchased by the university in 2015 on the antique market. This volume contains ninety-three slips that correspond with all of or portions of fifty-seven poems in the Guo feng 國風 (Airs of the States) section of the Shi jing 詩經 (Classic of Poetry). The manuscript is written in the script of the ancient state of Chu 楚, and thus presumably was robbed from a tomb somewhere in the territory of that state. This preliminary study of the manuscript presents close readings of six representative poems, comparing the versions in the manuscript with those of the received text. It concludes with consideration of how to understand the textual variants apparent in the manuscript, and also the significance of the manuscript for the composition and especially the transmission of the Shi jing in the pre-Qin period.

Arguing that manuscripts both contain and constitute works of art, we explore paratextuality as a phenomenon that connects manuscript studies to both qualitative and quantitative sides of aesthetic cognitivism. Focusing on our work with a single unpublished gospel manuscript (Dublin, CBL W 139) in the context of a larger project called Paratextual Understanding, we make that case that paratexts have aesthetic functions that allow them to contribute to the knowledge yielded by the larger literary work of which they are a part. We suggest a number of avenues for further research that engages with material culture, non-typography, paratexts, and the arts.

Abstract:
Illuminated manuscripts are, in general, the final products of a wise and complex interaction of different competencies. In particular, each manuscript reflects uses and techniques rooted in the historical and geographical traditions of the area of realization. Defining the characteristics and the materials in these valuable artefacts is an essential element to reconstruct their history and allow a more precise collocation and a possible comparison with other works in similar periods and areas. Non-invasive methods, mainly using portable instruments, offer undoubtedly good support in these studies. Recent analyses of an ancient Persian illuminated manuscript, combining multispectral imaging and spectroscopic measurements made with portable instruments (XRF, FORS, micro-Raman, IR-ATR) on selected points, provided new data for an improved understanding of this rare book. This study details the possibilities offered by combining these non-invasive methods for an in-depth understanding of the techniques and practices behind the realization of Middle Eastern illuminated manuscripts and provided new perspectives for multidisciplinary approaches to research in this field.

Abstract:
The article investigates and publishes a previously unknown note-autograph of Orest Nasturel, a famous book figure of the first half of the 17th century, who made a significant contribution to the popular education in Wallachia. Orest Nasturel held the high position of the second logothete at the court of the Wallachian ruler Matei Basarab. Despite his busy schedule, he devoted much of his time to collecting ancient manuscripts, translating Latin and Church Slavonic books into Romanian, and publishing them. Establishing the facts of Orest Nasturel’s biography is based, in historiography, on the analysis of the records he left in books. The scientific novelty of this research stems from the fact that, for the first time, there is introduced into scientific circulation Orest Nasturel’s handwritten owner’s entry, found in the manuscript book of Catecheses of Theodore the Studite in the Collection of SlavonicRussian Manuscripts of E.E. Egorov of the Russian State Library (Manuscripts Department, coll. 98, no. 949). According to this record, dated 1642, Orest Nasturel, inspecting once the sovereign’s monasteries, found in the Snagov Monastery (now Romania) an ancient manuscript crumbling from decay. Since it was not possible to save it, Orest Nasturel made a long journey to Rybnitsa (now the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic), where a famous book master named Nikolai made for him, in 1642, a copy of this book, which Orest then put into the Trinity Cozia Monastery (now Romania.) In the 19th century, the book was taken in Russia, probably by Russian old believers, where it first came to the collection of the antiquarian-bookseller I.L. Silin, and then was purchased from him by E.E. Egorov. The author conducted the dating of the manuscript’s watermarks (the 1640s) and compared the note’s handwriting with known autographs of Orest Nasturel. It is noted that the beautiful head-piece and the initials of Egorov’s Collection are close to the manuscript of Octoechos of the middle of the 17th century, stored in Belgrade in the Library of Serbian Patriarchate. According to a postscript in it, the Octoechos was made in a Slavic monastery of Athos. It is established that such decoration was quite popular for South Slavic manuscripts in the middle of the 17th century, and, therefore, it was hardly copied by the scribe Nikolai from an ancient original. The main results of the study are the detection, identification, attribution, reading and publication of the previously unknown note-autograph, as well as geographical and chronological localization of the list. The author emphasizes the value of Egorov’s Collection for studying by the specialists in the field of philology and linguistics, and sets a promising task of recreating the content, language features and dating of the lost protograph.

A tanulmány az Athós-hegyi Iviron 463-as jelzetű kétnyelvű (ógörög-ófrancia) bizánci kézirat különféle rétegeinek (ógörög főszöveg, miniatúrák, lapszélen szereplő ófrancia fordítás, ófrancia címsorok) összefüggéseit vizsgálja újabb megközelítésből, korábban nem vizsgált szempontok bevonásával: a miniatúrák és az ófrancia szövegben szereplő piros tintával kiemelt címsorok közötti kapcsolat feltárásával. A tanulmány a Barlám-regény görög változatait megőrző kódexek – ivironi kézirat szempontjából fontos – magyarázó címeit is áttekinti, a kéziratok közötti közös elemeket vizsgálja. Az elemzés az ivironi kódex készítésének körülményeivel kapcsolatban újabb fontos összefüggésekre világít rá.The study examines the relations between different aspects (Ancient Greek main text, miniatures, Old French translation on the margins, Old French headlines) of the manuscript Iviron № 463, which is a bilingual (Ancient Greek-Old French) Byzantine manuscript kept on Mount Athos, from a new perspective by including formerly not investigated viewpoints: by exploring the relationship between the miniatures and the headlines that are highlighted by red ink in the Old French text. The study also mentions the explanatory inscriptions in codices that preserved the Greek versions of the Barlaam-romance and are relevant in connection with the Iviron manuscript, furthermore, it investigates the common features of the manuscripts. The analysis reveals new important relations regarding the circumstances of the creation of codex Iviron.

Abstract:
Marina Vidas: Representing the Ancient Past in the Fifteenth-Century Maffei Tacitus (Copenhagen, Royal Library, MS GKS 496 2º) The focus of this article is a splendidly illuminated Italian Renaissance manuscript, MS GKS 496 2º, in the collection of the Royal Library, Copenhagen, containing the text of Annals (Books 11–16, 35) and Histories (Books 1–5, 14) composed by the Roman historian Tacitus (c.55–c.120). The coats of arms, which are found at the bottom of folio 1r, clearly identify the owner of the manuscript as belonging to the Maffei family of Rome and an inscription on f. 196r states that the text was emended by the humanist scholar and scribe Ludovico Regio of Imola, who is known to have copied and/or annotated at least five manuscripts for Agostino Maffei (1431–1496). The article argues that the intended reader of the Copenhagen Tacitus was Agostino Maffei, who in Rome during the 1480s and 1490s was actively commissioning copies of and collecting manuscripts with texts by ancient Greek and Roman authors. The article discusses the context for the commission and subsequent annotations to the text undertaken by Ludovico. It is also pointed out that the hand which executed the headings and incipits of the Annals is very reminiscent of that of the celebrated Paduan scribe Bartolomeo Sanvito (1435–1511), who rubricated at least one manuscript and possibly another for Agostino Maffei. In addition, an in-depth analysis is made of the work of the illuminator: the full-page frontispiece, f. 1r, and ten miniatures at the opening of each of the books of Tacitus’ works, ff. 11v–187r, which have been attributed by art historians to either Giovan Pietro da Birago (fl. c.1463–1513) who, by 1490, was the leading illuminator at the Sforza court in Milan, or to the hand of an unknown master, who was influenced by Birago. The article discusses sources for the all’ antica illuminations and points out the artist’s reliance on pictorial precedents. But while many architectural frontispieces in fifteenth-century Renaissance manuscripts have a monumental quality and a celebratory air, the opening page of the Copenhagen Tacitus exposes the fragmentary state of the remains of the past. The ruin, along with the truncated sculptures and mythological beings accompanying the initials, might have been intended to provoke meditations on the past and a longing for the great things that once existed. It is also suggested that images in the Tacitus manuscript visualize lines of the text which they accompany and that attention is drawn to the artist’s skill as a painter as well as to his creativity. Light is also shed on the similarities and differences between the miniatures in the Maffei Tacitus and those in books attributed to Birago or to the Master of the Barozzi Breviary. It is assessed that the figure style employed in the Tacitus is quite close to that of the master who painted the illuminations in the Barozzi Breviary (Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Inc. 4, H.63) and to that of Birago in his signed frontispiece of the Sforziada (Warsaw, Biblioteka Narodowa, Inc. F. 1347). However, there are some notable differences in the execution of hair, proportions of the figures’ bodies and the degree of activity in the compositions in the Copenhagen and Warsaw volumes. It is therefore concluded that the Maffei Tacitus was more likely to have been painted by the Master of the Barozzi Breviary than by Birago. Lastly, because Agostino Maffei was a man who was interested in many facets of the ancient past and involved in all aspects of manuscript production, it is suggested that he might have expressed some ideas about how the Tacitus should be illuminated and that the manuscript that exists today in Copenhagen incorporates these wishes.
