Abstract:
This chapter identifies some of the conceptual problems in providing a stable, inclusive interpretation of anarchism. It rejects accounts of anarchism constructed on the supposed universal minimum of ‘anti-statism’, as these synthesize radically antipathetic movements, in particular free-market individualisms along with the main socialist variants of anarchist communism and syndicalism. These purportedly comprehensive versions overlook the distinctive conceptual arrangements of social and individualist anarchisms. These separate ideological forms support radically different practices and generate conflicting interpretations of ‘anti-statism’. Instead, a conceptual analytical approach is best suited to identifying stable, intersecting families of anarchism (such as Green anarchism, anarcha-feminism and post-anarchism), as this method is sensitive to the malleable and variable conception of the political agent, which is a feature of the main constellations of social anarchism.

Zimmer, Kenyon. Saul Yanovsky and Yiddish Anarchism on the Lower East Side. University of Illinois Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252041051.003.0003.

Abstract:
Though virtually unknown today among anarchists and historians alike, Russian Jewish immigrant Saul Yanovsky helped to found Yiddish-speaking anarchist movements in both England and the United States, edited the most widely circulated anarchist newspaper in American history, and was the single most important figure of turn-of-the-century Jewish anarchism. He was a prominent and controversial figure in the Yiddish-speaking world of the Lower East Side, and played no small role in building that world. This essay, relying primarily on Yiddish-language sources, traces the life and influence of this once revered (and reviled) figure. His story is indispensable to our understanding of both anarchism and Yiddish culture in New York’s Lower East Side.

Abstract:
Anarchism rejects the state as an inherently despotic institution that must be abolished in order for human nature to flower. This does not mean the absence of social order, however, for anarchism also contains a positive vision of the kind of community it expects to arise when political authority is eliminated. Although it shares liberalism's commitment to individual autonomy and Marxism's commitment to social justice, anarchism claims that it can implement those principles more fully and effectively without utilizing the mechanism of the state. Anarchism as a secular political philosophy originated as a product of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, and anarchist thought was the cumulative product of a number of different individuals in different countries who elaborated its basic principles. This article examines the views of several thinkers on anarchism, including William Godwin, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Michael Bakunin, and Prince Peter Kropotkin. It also considers the link between anarchism and terrorism.

Abstract:
Both the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, and anarchism, have gained more academic interest over the past decades. Many authors have also recognised an anarchist sensibility in Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy, yet there has been no sustained or explicit discussion of anarchism in their work to date. This collection aims to provide readers with a map detailing Deleuze and Guattari’s anarchistic thought and the ways in which it intersects with classic and contemporary anarchist discourse and practices found both in academia and society at large.

Abstract:
Abstract This short book provides a new point of departure for our understanding of anarchism. It questions standard understandings of anarchy and anarchism as an ideology of chaos and disorder, and sheds new light on anarchism as a lived set of prefigurative practices, with a rich historical legacy. The book explores anarchist approaches to public health provision, education, work, law and order, and world politics, including topics of war and violence, federalism, and climate change. By locating the emergence of anarchist ideas in a global history of colonialism and imperialism, it links anarchism into struggles for freedom across the world, and argues that anarchism still holds value for thinking about new models of freedom and democracy today.
