Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper we introduce ShinyItemAnalysis application for psychometric analysis of educational and psychological tests and their items. ShinyItemAnalysis provides graphical interface and web framework to open source statistical software R and thus opens up its functionality to wide audience. Application covers broad range of methods and offers data examples, model equations, parameter estimates, interpretation of results, together with selected R code, and is thus suitable for teaching psychometric concepts with R. The application also aspires to be a simple tool for routine analysis by allowing the users to upload and analyze their own data and by generating analysis report. We conclude by arguing that psychometric analysis should be a routine part of test development in order to gather proofs of reliability and validity of the measurement. With example of admission test to medical faculty, we demonstrate how ShinyItemAnalysis may provide a simple and free tool to routinely analyze tests.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The question of business performance assessment has been discussed by many researchers. Some resulting indicators of business performance can be applied in all enterprises (e.g. ROE, ROA), some have limited use (e.g. Tobin ́s Q). This paper focuses on finding the aspects (indicators), that could affect business performance itself, rather than to propose new indicators of business performance. The results of this analysis could help the management of enterprise to focus on the right objectives in the future. The research adopted quantitative approach. It is based on analysis of fourteen indicators (i.e. their values) processed in order to prove or disprove their statistical interrelationship with chosen performance indicators (ROE, ROS). The dataset, describing 784 large enterprises in the Czech Republic, was downloaded from Albertina – Gold edition. Data were statistically tested using Spearman ́s correlation coefficient. Findings of this research indicate that in the case of few indicators (such as Equity or Total debt in the case of ROS) the relationship can be proven. These indicators are presented, and results are discussed in the paper, together with the possible future research.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the software development to calibration and interpretation of image data measured by a LEEM device. As the imaging technique is uniquely suited for in-situ studies of surface dynamical processes, the attention is mainly paid to methods enabling the evaluation of measurement time series. The phase correlation method based on Fourier transform of images is proposed to temperature shift correction between consecutive frames. The thesis describes the methods of additive and impulse noise filtering, image visualization, the filtration of secondary electrons and the determination of I-V curves from measured image data. Implemented methods are described not only in terms of their mathematical origin, but also with emphasis on the revealing of critical aspects associated with their use. The thesis also focuses on the application of the created algorithm to image data capturing the spatial and temporal evolution of 4,4’-biphenyl-dicarboxylic acid surface phases induced by sample annealing. Based on these evaluations, a suitable procedure is then determined to perform accurate detection and compensation of temperature shift said.

Abstract:
Value-range analysis is a static analysis technique based on arguing about the values that a variable may take on a given program point. It can be used to prove absence of run-time errors such as out-of-bound array accesses. Since value-range analysis collects information on each program point, data-flow analysis can be used in association with it. The main goal of this work is designing and implementing such a value-range analysis tool. The work begins with an introduction into the topic, an explanation of data-flow and value-range analyses and a description of abstract interpretation, which provides the formal basis of the analyser. The core of this work is the design, implementation, testing and evaluation of the analyser. In the conclusion, our personal experience obtained in the area of the thesis is mentioned, along with a discussion of a possible future development of the designed tool.

Abstract:
Association rules mining is one of several ways of knowledge discovery in databases. Paradoxically, data mining itself can produce such great amounts of association rules that there is a new knowledge management problem: there can easily be thousands or even more association rules holding in a data set. The goal of this work is to design a new method for association rules post-processing. The method should be software and domain independent. The output of the new method should be structured description of the whole set of discovered association rules. The output should help user to work with discovered rules. The path to reach the goal I used is: to split association rules into clusters. Each cluster should contain rules, which are more similar each other than to rules from another cluster. The output of the method is such cluster definition and description. The main contribution of this Ph.D. thesis is the described new Multicriterial clustering association rules method. Secondary contribution is the discussion of already published association rules post-processing methods. The output of the introduced new method are clusters of rules, which cannot be reached by any of former post-processing methods. According user expectations clusters are more relevant and more effective than any former association rules clustering results. The method is based on two orthogonal clustering of the same set of association rules. One clustering is based on interestingness measures (confidence, support, interest, etc.). Second clustering is inspired by document clustering in information retrieval. The representation of rules in vectors like documents is fontal in this thesis. The thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 2 identify the role of association rules in the KDD (knowledge discovery in databases) process, using KDD methodologies (CRISP-DM, SEMMA, GUHA, RAMSYS). Chapter 3 define association rule and introduce characteristics of association rules (including interestingness measuress). Chapter 4 introduce current association rules post-processing methods. Chapter 5 is the introduction to cluster analysis. Chapter 6 is the description of the new Multicriterial clustering association rules method. Chapter 7 consists of several experiments. Chapter 8 discuss possibilities of usage and development of the new method.

This doctoral thesis deals with biophysical interpretation of quantitative phase imaging (QPI) gained with coherence-controlled holographic microscope (CCHM). In the first part methods evaluating information from QPI such as analysis of shape and dynamical characteristics of segmented objects as well as evaluation of the phase information itself are described. In addition, a method of dynamic phase differences (DPD) is designed to allow more detailed monitoring of cell mass translocations. All of these methods are used in biological applications. In an extensive study of various types of cell death, QPI information is compared with flow cytometry data, and preferably a combination of QPI and fluorescence microscopy is used. The DPD method is used to study mass translocations inside the cell during osmotic events. The simplified DPD method is applied to investigate the mechanism of tumor cell movement in collagen gels.

Conexões: linguagens e educação em cena. Editora Amplla, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51859/amplla.cle283.1121-0.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This investigation aimed to explore the mode of curriculum delivery in Primary School in Tshwane South District during the Covid-19 pandemic because there is insufficient research on this subject. A case study of a Primary School was used to obtain in-depth information about the mode of curriculum delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using a case study was also practical because the pandemic's restrictions posed a challenge to research many schools. Data was gathered through document analysis. A qualitative approach was employed to analyze and identify categories and emerging themes from the data. An interpretive paradigm was used while connectivism theory was employed as a lens. The findings revealed that schools used face-to-face mode of curriculum delivery during the lockdown and after schools re-opened during Covid-19, resulting in a challenge with content coverage that led to revising the annual teaching plans and trimming the curriculum.

Abstract:
Higher education institutions have a responsibility to address past and present social inequalities, one of which is the marginalization of people with disabilities in education. The chapter explores and highlights leadership challenges to the inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education (HE). A qualitative approach and interpretive paradigm will be used to review the literature and analyze documents as data generation methods. The chapter will contribute to the debate on the role of leadership in the inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education. Aspects such as the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors are key in understanding the inclusion of students with disabilities in HE. Some of the leadership challenges to the inclusion of students with disabilities, amongst others, include institutional and architectural barriers, leadership strategies, and institutional policies. Policy and practice may serve to obscure the challenges of inclusion.

Abstract:
The present work proposes the use of Latent Dirichlet Allocation to model Extraordinary Appeals received by Brazil’s Supreme Court. The data consist of a corpus of 45,532 lawsuits manually annotated by the Court’s experts with theme labels, a multi-class and multi-label classification task. We initially train models with 10 and 30 topics and analyze their semantics by examining each topic’s most relevant words and their most representative texts, aiming to evaluate model interpretability and quality. We also train models with 30, 100, 300 and 1,000 topics, and quantitatively evaluate their potential using the topics to generate feature vectors for each appeal. These vectors are then used to train a lawsuit theme classifier. We compare traditional bag-of-words approaches (word counts and tf-idf values) with the topic-based text representation to assess topic relevancy. Our topics semantic analysis demonstrate that our models with 10 and 30 topics were capable of capturing some of the legal matters discussed by the Court. In addition, our experiments show that the model with 300 topics was the best text vectoriser and that the interpretable, low dimensional representations it generates achieve good classification results.

The purpose of this article is to understand how online gamers as a virtual community build social relationships through their participation in online games. Empirically, several aspects in the context of virtual community are still not fully understood, such as: (1) What types of rules, norms, and values are grounded in virtual community? (2) How do people institutionalize their members in a virtual community? and (3) Why do they create social relationships in virtual environment? The identified gap thus explains why studies have produced inconsistent findings on the impacts of online game play (Williams, 2003), in which many studies in the past have only looked at aggression and addiction. A more detailed understanding of the social context of in-game interactions would help to improve our understanding of the impact of online games on players and vice versa. Therefore, this article will present a case study of a renowned online game, Ever Quest (EQ), with the aim of understanding how players establish and develop social relationships. In specific, the Institutional Theory was applied to examine the social relationships among the players, and a hermeneutic-interpretive method was used to analyze the data in order to address the following general research question, “How is the social world of EQ constituted in terms of building social relationships?”

Abstract:
E-learning has altered, and will continue to affect teaching and learning contexts in universities and tertiary education worldwide, including in Taiwan. Many universities in Taiwan have moved to offer courses that include both face-to-face and e-learning but very little research has been undertaken on student perspectives. The issue about whether e-learning can bring benefits to improve student learning or students will face more challenges is a concern of many researchers and educators. This chapter explores the benefits and challenges of e-learning support from student perspectives in a national research-oriented university in Taiwan. An interpretive paradigm with quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted as the basis for the research methodology. This chapter outlines the findings from a survey of nearly 400 different college students and focus group discussions with over thirty students about their perceptions and experiences of e-learning in blended learning courses. SPSS were used to analyze the data of the questionnaires and interviews. The findings suggest that students experience benefits and challenges relating to their personal perception of e-learning, learning attitude, personal expertise with ICT, use and access to the requisite technology. Students perceived the benefits of e-learning as arising from being able to preview and follow up on face-to-face lectures and to discuss ideas and issues with peers and instructors given that class sizes are large, typically over a hundred students. Respondent students indicated e-learning might help them change their learning attitudes to become more active and diligent learners and also improve their personal time management and organizational ability. However, the findings from questionnaires and interviews also identified students face personal and technological challenges. The researcher expects the findings can contribute to enhancing the university e-learning practice and improving instructor teaching and student learning in e-learning. The university and instructors need to identify the perceived benefits and challenges of e-learning and provide practical support for student learning. Students also need to change their perceptions and learning attitude to e-learning.

Abstract:
The explosive growth of the Internet has enabled virtual communities to engage in social activities such as meeting people, developing friendships and relationships, sharing experiences, telling personal stories, or just listening to jokes. Such online activities are developed across time and space with people from different walks of life, age groups, and cultural backgrounds. A few scholars have clearly defined virtual community as a social entity where people relate to one another by the use of a specific technology (Jones, 1995; Rheingold, 1993; Schuler, 1996) like computer-mediated communication (CMC) technologies to foster social relationships (Wood & Smith, 2001). It is further supported by Stolterman, Agren, and Croon (1999) who refers to virtual community as a new social “life form” surfacing from the Internet and CMC. There are several types of virtual community such as the virtual community of relationship, the virtual community of place, the virtual community of memory, the virtual community of fantasy, the virtual community of mind/interest, and the virtual community of transaction (Bellah, 1985; Hagel & Armstrong, 1997; Kowch & Schwier, 1997). These types of virtual community all share a common concept, which is the existence of a group of people who are facilitated with various forms of CMCs. With the heightened use of CMCs, people begin to transit and replicate the same sense of belonging through meaningful relationships by creating a new form of social identity and social presence. As emphasized by Hiltz and Wellman (1997), people can come from many parts of the world to form “close-knit” relationships in a virtual community. The purpose of this article is to understand how online gamers as a virtual community build social relationships through their participation in online games. Empirically, several aspects in the context of virtual community are still not fully understood, such as: (1) What types of rules, norms, and values are grounded in virtual community? Abstract:
Due to the dynamic health status of patients and discrepant stability of physiological variables, health data often presents as irregular multi-rate multivariate time series (IMR-MTS) with significantly varying sampling rates. Existing methods mainly study changes of IMR-MTS values in the time domain, without considering their different dominant frequencies and varying data quality. Hence, we propose a novel Cooperative Joint Attentive Network (CJANet) to analyze IMR-MTS in frequency domain, which adaptively handling discrepant dominant frequencies while tackling diverse data qualities caused by irregular sampling. In particular, novel dual-channel joint attention is designed to jointly identify important magnitude and phase signals while detecting their dominant frequencies, automatically enlarging the positive influence of key variables and frequencies. Furthermore, a new cooperative learning module is introduced to enhance information exchange between magnitude and phase channels, effectively integrating global signals to optimize the network. A frequency-aware fusion strategy is finally designed to aggregate the learned features. Extensive experimental results on real-world medical datasets indicate that CJANet significantly outperforms existing methods and provides highly interpretable results.

Abstract:
The Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is among the most widely used parametric probability distributions for representing data. However, it is complicated to analyze the relationship among GMMs since they lie on a high-dimensional manifold. Previous works either perform clustering of GMMs, which learns a limited discrete latent representation, or kernel-based embedding of GMMs, which is not interpretable due to difficulty in computing the inverse mapping. In this paper, we propose Parametric Manifold Learning of GMMs (PML-GMM), which learns a parametric mapping from a low-dimensional latent space to a high-dimensional GMM manifold. Similar to PCA, the proposed mapping is parameterized by the principal axes for the component weights, means, and covariances, which are optimized to minimize the reconstruction loss measured using Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD). As the KLD between two GMMs is intractable, we approximate the objective function by a variational upper bound, which is optimized by an EM-style algorithm. Moreover, We derive an efficient solver by alternating optimization of subproblems and exploit Monte Carlo sampling to escape from local minima. We demonstrate the effectiveness of PML-GMM through experiments on synthetic, eye-fixation, flow cytometry, and social check-in data.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Contemporary organizations frequently employ projects to leverage work across organizational units, utilizing specialized knowledge from different areas of the organization to meet specific quality criteria in a defined time period, at a set cost. Project managers act as hubs of knowledge in directing projects and driving their success, often using technology for this purpose. To date, little is known in how far technology support this knowledge sharing in the project management. The paper aims to explore project managers’ perceptions regarding their knowledge sharing and how this is supported by recent technology. The paper further explores benefits and challenges experienced by project managers when using the specific technology for their knowledge sharing. The research adopts the interpretive qualitative approach and collects data through semi-structured interviews with project managers using such a technology. 3 C’s analysis was used to analyze the collected empirical material to generate 6 concepts. The concepts are then reviewed in context of selected theoretical framework, including the informatics domain model by Beynon-Davies. The findings indicate that the technology largely supports knowledge sharing of project managers, both presenting opportunities for more efficiency as well as new challenges. The technology leads to change in the modus of knowledge sharing and also individuals’ approach: what, when and how knowledge is shared. This enhanced understanding contributes to existing theory and the insights can aid practitioners in development or introduction of technology in the workplace. The work also contributes to theory about how project managers can leverage knowledge across projects with the aid of such a technology as well as to project managers’ and managers’ work, such as to make efficient use of a technology and avoid certain challenges.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The ability to predict well inflow performance for varying well and reservoir conditions is important when optimizing production. Many methods exist to estimate a well’s current productive capacity (IPR curve) and extensions to the methods are available for predicting future well performance. The extensions to predict future inflow performance behavior account for changes in relative permeability and assume an average reservoir pressure. The applicability and accuracy of the methods depends on knowledge of reservoir parameters which may be difficult to obtain in low permeability reservoirs. Several authors have presented methods of analyzing and history matching well performance. These methods typically yield reservoir parameters which may be used in the well inflow performance methods in order to investigate the results of varying well production parameters. These methods are particularly useful in low permeability settings where interpretable welltest data may be difficult to obtain or prohibitively expensive. Currently, the analytical history matching approach is most accurate when applied to single-phase systems. Predictions of black oil reservoir performance below the bubble point can exhibit large error since depletion of the total reservoir energy is not accounted for using the constant gas-oil ratio approach typical for these methods. This paper presents a method to analyze well performance of black oil systems below the bubble point. The method incorporates a material balance approach to account for changing gas-oil ratios as the reservoir is depleted. Prediction of future well performance is also presented. Along with reservoir characterization, another benefit of the method is the ability to construct IPR curves at any point in order to optimize production. The proposed method uses a pseudo pressure transform to account for changes in fluid properties as the reservoir pressure is depleted. Relative permeability changes can be incorporated in the pseudo pressure transform. Comparisons to finite difference simulation results and actual productio data are presented. Comparisons of future IPR curves generated by other methods are also presented.
