Abstract:
A number of the conflicts that wracked European countries under Axis-power occupation during the Second World War can be understood as civil wars. This analytical prism should be seen as complementing rather than replacing the more conventional pairing of collaboration and resistance. The three European cases from this period that best fit conventional notions of civil war in terms of the intensity and duration of fighting among co-nationals are Greece, Yugoslavia, and Italy. A comparative analysis can yield insights into the complex interplay of historical continuities and ruptures, and of nationalist and internationalist frames of reference, in shaping the agendas and choices of participants in these violent struggles.

Abstract:
This article focuses on surface and interface superconductivity, a pivotal area of mesoscopic superconductivity. It discusses theoretical ideas regarding superconductivity in the 2D limit; pairing symmetry in systems with broken inversion symmetry and in the presence of Rashba spin–orbit interaction; and coupling of substrate phonon modes to layer electronic states to induce or enhance the superconducting condensate. It also reviews the experimental ongoing efforts to fabricate, characterize, and measure these systems, with particular emphasis on oxide materials. Superconductivity in two dimensions, in ultra-thin metals on Si(111), and at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is examined. The article concludes with an analysis of theoretical propositions aimed at realizing and testing novel superconducting states occurring at the surfaces and interfaces.

Abstract:
Analysis of “The Poems of Our Climate,” Wallace Stevens’s ars poetica, reveals the value of substituting the process of recursion for the reflexivity that we often consider to be part and parcel of lyric form. The relationship between the two notions is one of three couplings the chapter investigates, the other two being remediation and representation, and—drawing on Foucault—similitude and resemblance. In each case the first term in the pairing ends up the favored one. The resulting displacement generates for the poem both a formal distinctiveness in which resistance has no share, and—through etymological investigation—a new set of intertexts in poems by Keats not usually brought to bear in such contexts. In short, rather than resist its material conditions of representation, the poem thinks through them.

Booij, Geert. The Morphology of Dutch. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198838852.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is the first fully-fledged description of the morphological system of Dutch in English. Inflection, derivation, and compounding are each discussed in separate chapters, following a short exposé on the basic assumptions of morphological theory. The interaction of morphology with phonology and syntax is dealt with subsequently. The chapters also provide access to more detailed studies of Dutch that have appeared in the Dutch and international literature. The book shows that the morphology of Dutch poses many interesting descriptive and theoretical issues. It contributes to ongoing discussions on the nature and representation of morphological processes, the role of paradigmatic relations between words, and between words and phrases, and the interaction between morphology, phonology, and syntax. Crucial use is made of the notion ‘construction’, a systematic pairing of form and meaning. The theoretical implication of this analysis of Dutch morphology is that the grammar of natural languages has to be conceived of a multi-dimensional network of abstract morphological and syntactic patterns and their instantiations as individual words and phrases. The book will be of relevance to students of Germanic languages, general linguists, typologists, computational linguists, and psycholinguists.
