Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the dynamics of the relationships between sales and internal and external environmental drivers in a retail company using a systems perspective in order to support retail management decisions with nonlinear methods.Design/methodology/approachThe research and results are presented in two parts: the collection and explorative analysis of the data; and discussion of the managerial implications following a systems perspective. The exploratory analysis is conducted using a statistical comparison of linear and nonlinear models of sales data from a retail company. The data, which comprise two data sets, come from 45 retail stores located in different regions of the USA.FindingsSpecifically, nonlinear models provided a better explanation of variation in retail activity (R2=46 per cent) than linear models (R2=16 per cent). In such a situation, the nonlinear analysis captures the influence of internal and external environmental drivers on retail sales.Research limitations/implicationsWith a limited variety of external and internal drivers, the exploratory analysis aims to describe a general situation in which retailers are managing activities in complex environments as opposed to reflect on a particular retail chain.Practical implicationsThe systems perspective is used to interpret the managerial implications of the nonlinear analysis fits, particularly in cases where retail decision-makers are adapting, transforming and restructuring sources of competitive advantage in complex environments.Originality/valueThe paper provides an alternative perspective (the systemic one) of how retailers could interpret the relationships between internal and external variables in the dynamic environment of the retail chains with nonlinear models.

Abstract:
ASEAN countries perceive the possible formation of the FTAA as a potential threat on the grounds that it may divert export markets and foreign direct investment (FDI) capital to the FTAA region. This effect, together with the “China factor” and the hangover from the 1997 financial crisis, posts a concern to the ASEAN countries' economic growth. We show that, with Singapore as an exception, ASEAN countries are afflicted with state activism, poor property rights protection, and under-developed corporate governance. We argue that a poor institutional environment may exacerbate the effects of an external shock – such as that of FTAA – and thus we need to explicitly incorporate the role of institutional environments in our analysis. We further argue that while FDI flows to locations with market opportunities, a location's institutional environment affects the composition of FDI. Due to ASEAN countries' institutional weakness, its substantial inward FDI has mainly substituted, rather than complemented, local entrepreneurship. As FTAA may divert FDI flows into ASEAN countries, their appropriate response is to improve institutional quality so that the share of the more productive complementary FDI will increase in the total FDI inflows.

Abstract:
Aim. The presented study aims to analyze the external and internal environment of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, identifying opportunities and threats to the region’s economic and social development.Tasks. The author examines the methodology for analyzing the external and internal environment of the region; analyzes global opportunities and threats to the development of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, as well as strengths and weaknesses of a subsidized region according to basic limiting economic factors.Methods. The author conducts an assessment of the region based on the basic factors of the external and internal environment. Strategic trends are summarized and inferred from statistical observations. The study also uses analytical and synthetic methods.Results. The Kabardino-Balkar Republic, a region with a continuously low level of economic and social development, is chosen as the subject of the study. It is established that this region’s natural resources can serve as a driver of economic growth. However, the region’s low investment attractiveness and the large amount of investment required make it impossible to seize this strategic opportunity. Due to the low level of economic development in the Republic, there is an outflow of the working-age population, which is an obvious strategic threat. The level of development of production facilities and infrastructure is below the national average. The region’s main specialization includes the agro-industrial complex (AIC), wholesale and retail trade. There is a lack of capital for the implementation of the development strategy in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, the subnational budget largely depending on gratuitous contributions from the center.Conclusions. The conducted analysis of the external and internal environment makes it possible to identify opportunities and threats and determine strategic priorities supported by competitive advantages.

Abstract:
This article examines a flexible architectural environment as a system that can change itsnparameters under the influence of various factors. These changes are motivated by the development or adaptation of the system to external environmental factors. A flexible architectural environment is considered as a system from the point of view of the procedural aspect, which determines changes in the system at various levels, as well as changes in the connections between the internal elements of the system. In this aspect, the internal elements of the system can be identified, with the help of which the flexibility of the architectural environment is achieved. Three levels of change and development of the system are considered in detail: material, functional, and aesthetic. The material and functional level involves changes in the system, which are achieved by structural elements and equipment. The aesthetic level implies changes in the system with elements such as color and light, materials, textures and decor. These groups of elements of the system undergo changes in internal connections, which are formal and aesthetic in nature.

Abstract:
Management accounting of an economic entity in the agro-industrial complex is a complex of multidimensional system. Sustainable development of a business entity in the agro-industrial complex depends on many different factors and conditions, by which we understand the causes (driving forces) of a process, determining its character or its individual features. From the functioning of management accounting depends on the order of decision-making. In the context of diversity and heterogeneity of factors, a high degree of uncertainty, the complexity of interactions, the study of these factors is a serious problem. Therefore, management personnel should carry out a constant analysis of all factors affecting the enterprise and evaluate their interaction, which reflects the causal relationships that characterize the sustainable development of the agricultural enterprise.

Abstract:
Purpose – Availability and access to food is a determinant of obesity. The purpose of this paper is to examine food availability within and outside of post-primary schools in Ireland. Design/methodology/approach – Data on the internal school food environment were collected from 63 post-primary schools using questionnaires. The external school food environment for these 63 schools was assessed by mapping food businesses within 1 km of schools, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Food businesses were categorised based on type of food sold. Findings – A total of 68.3 per cent of schools had a canteen, 52.5 per cent had a small food shop and 37.1 per cent had a vending machine. A total of 32.7 per cent of schools reported selling chips (French fries) in their canteen while 44.2 per cent of schools reported selling energy-dense nutrient-poor foods in their school shop. Of the schools surveyed, there was an average of 3.89 coffee shops and sandwich bars, 3.65 full service restaurants, 2.60 Asian and other “ethnic” restaurants, 4.03 fast food restaurants, 1.95 supermarkets, 6.71 local shops and 0.73 fruit and vegetable retailers within a 1 km radius of the post-primary schools. Findings are presented by geography (urban/rural), disadvantage (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in School (DEIS)/non DEIS), gender (girls/boys/mixed) and food policy in place at the school (yes/no). Practical implications – These data will facilitate schools working on the framework for Health Promoting Schools in Ireland. Social implications – This work can contribute to current discussions on restricting accessibility to certain foods and food premises for school children. Originality/value – The study explores the internal and external school food environment. GIS have been used to link the external food environment to specific schools thus allowing a comprehensive analysis of the schools’ food environment. To the authors knowledge, this is the first time that both environments are explored simultaneously.

Abstract:
Current market conditions require organizations to understand the business environment in order to achieve strategic planning and decision-making processes. An organization's competitive advantage is associated with an understanding of how to determine the potential of these companies when examining internal and external conditions (insertions) and the effort to meet customer needs. Among the many tools that contribute to this understanding, the SWOT analysis stands out, which can assist organizations to better understand the internal and external environment and formulate strategic plans in a collaborative way. This work aimed to implement an evaluation model for SWOT analysis using fuzzy inference methods. The adopted methodology started from a survey on the internal and external characteristics of the organization, definition of the linguistic criteria of the SWOT matrix, correlation between the variables found and elaboration of the fuzzy inference system for crossing the inputs. The approach proposed by the Fuzzy Inference model for the SWOT matrix proved to be simplified and efficient for a better collection of information that allows the prediction of the future environment, enabling reasoned strategies resulting from the model presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The article focuses on the interconnectedness of foreign policy environments to explain Slovenia’s opportunities and constraints for foreign policy action. During the period of pre-independence para-diplomacy, the building of an internal and external domestic environment successfully turned constraints (no international recognition) into opportunities (applying for membership of European and global intergovernmental organizations). In the second period - post-recognition - considering the absence of a strategic foreign policy document, the Slovenian internal foreign policy environment became a major constraint to seize foreign environment opportunities. This affected Slovenia’s accomplishments, notably after NATO and EU memberships were achieved in 2004. Although the Slovenian internal environment matured during the following period to adopt, in 2015, a comprehensive foreign policy strategy the recent turn in world politics (especially the European financial and economic crisis and the migration crisis) created for the first time a foreign environment for Slovenia that offered many fewer opportunities and far more constraints.

The costs associated with the provision and maintenance of drinking water and wastewater infrastructure represents a significant financial demand worldwide. Maintenance costs are disproportionately high, indicating a lack of adequate durability. The aim of this paper is to study the degradation mode and the responsible factors of deterioration concrete pipe, used in the sewage’s city of Rennes (France). Thus, samples taken from different areas of the pipe (Raft, medium and roof) were analyzed using investigation methods in order to illustrate the internal and external rate of damage, caused by effluents and ground. In addition, chemical and mineralogical changes recorded were identified using scanning electron micrographs (SEM). In this research program, chemical and mechanical studies were performed by measuring the compressive and splitting tensile strengths. A phenolphthalein indicator solution is applied to a concrete specimen on a fresh fracture surface to determine the corrosion of steel reinforcement and the diseases advancement (pathologies depth). This study clearly shows the important anisotropy of both, internal and external damage. Finally, recommendations are proposed in line with the environment and possible approaches to sustainability assessment are also imposed.

Abstract:
Reliability analysis of complex systems subject to competing failure processes based on probability theory has received increasing attention. However, in many situations, the observed data is too limited to estimate the parameters and probability distributions of the system by statistic methods. To address this problem, an uncertain degradation models is proposed in this paper under the framework of uncertainty theory. Based on this model, a complex system which is subject to both continuous internal degradation and external shocks is introduced. The continuous internal degradation of the system is controlled by some uncertain factors, and the external shocks are deemed to an uncertain renewal reward process. Reliability for the complex systems is obtained by employing the uncertainty theory. Finally, a case study is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the results obtained in the paper.

Burçin Hamutoğlu, Nazire, and Ugur Basarmak. "External and Internal Barriers in Technology Integration: A Structural Regression Analysis." Journal of Information Technology Education: Research 19 (2020): 017–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4497.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The aim of this study is to propose and test a model in which perceived barriers to technology integration are handled within a broad framework. It can be argued that the proposed model will have the dynamics to examine the studies performed on technology integration in a generic way and to have an important place in explaining the technology barriers at individual and school level under internal and external barriers. This can then be used to minimize such barriers and facilitate technology integration. Background: As seen in previous studies, barriers constitute a complex structure that is encountered in almost every environment for different reasons, affects the teaching-learning process, and contains several variables under primary and secondary barriers. It is thought that exploring this complex structure plays a key role in technology integration. In many studies, it is observed that the barriers are addressed as internal and external aspects but work on such aspects is quite limited. Methodology: Based on the convenience sampling method, the research was planned and conducted in accordance with the relational survey model. A structural regression model was used to examine the barriers that teachers perceive in technology integration. The sample of the study involved 449 teachers working in different branches at nine public schools in the academic year of 2018-2019 at the city center of Kirsehir province, and they participated on a voluntary basis. The number of teachers in the research sample corresponds to 73% of the total number of teachers in Kirsehir. Contribution: The contribution to the literature is proposing and testing a model which can be used to measure technological barriers in technology integration in education considering internal and external factors with a large perspective and holistically. Findings: The findings of the structural regression model used in this study showed that beliefs towards learning-teaching activities (BLTA), beliefs towards the expert support (BES), technological self-efficacy beliefs (TSEB), family resistance (FR), assessment (ASSES), and pedagogical self-efficacy beliefs (PSEB) are located under internal barriers and that lack of vision (LV), lack of money (LM), lack of training (LT), infrastructure (INF), content (CONT), and time (TIME) are all part of external factors. Furthermore, the results showed that external barriers affect the internal barriers directly and positively. Finally, it was observed that beliefs towards change (BC) and lack of leadership (LL) had no effect on internal or external barriers. Recommendations for Practitioners: As the findings of this study were discussed under internal and external barriers to technology integration, the results of the study could shed a light for managers, teachers or candidate teachers within the framework of “technology integration.” The identification of barriers in different settings should be used as the first step in minimizing the impact of such barriers in technology integration in education. Recommendation for Researchers: The work done can form the basis of investigating the impacts of latest technology on education, and necessary dimensions on the technology integration within the context of internal and external factors in the classroom or in a virtual learning environment for further research. Findings should then be used to aid technology integration in education. Impact on Society: The effective and successful technology integration may be reached by minimizing the barriers identified. Future Research: Future research can investigate technological barriers with reference to external variables (e.g., motivation, acceptance, satisfaction) using the developed scale. The findings can then be used to eliminate the barriers and facilitate technology integration.

Abstract:
The political economy framework illuminates interplay between the internal and external sociopolitical and economic forces of marketing channels. Framing the collection and analysis of data from retailer informants on channel environments, configuration, and decision structure, a theoretical model is developed for explaining interorganizational responses to uncertainty and dependence constraints of the channel environment. Heterogeneity is hypothesized to precipitate complex and fluid channel structures as a means of coping with uncertainty. In contrast, high levels of variability in the output environment are expected to foster vertical integration and bureaucratization as a means of reducing dependence. Support for both hypotheses is reported and implications for future research are discussed.

There has not been much research on the impact of the museum environment on the formation of visitor loyalty. The purpose of this study is to discover the convoluted relationships among internal and external physical environments, involvement, knowledge value, satisfaction, and desire in forming visitor loyalty. A field survey was carried out at museums. A confirmatory factor analysis with the collected data showed that the measures used included an adequate level of measurement quality. The proposed model was revised by adding four meaningful approaches to improve the anticipatory ability and model fit. Results from the structural analysis demonstrated the criticality of both internal and external dimensions of physical environments in loyalty formation and identified the significant mediating impact of cognitive, evaluative, and motivational factors in our theoretical framework. Moreover, the relative importance of desire in increasing loyalty was found. Research contributions to the museum literature are discussed.

Abstract:
In this paper, a quantitative multicriteria futuristic fuzzy decision hierarchy (MFFDH)-based SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis has been carried out to determine priorities among significant factors related to tourism's internal and external environment. In MFFDH model, the fuzzy logic is combined with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to overcome the uncertainty in decision making process. The utilization of MFFDH with SWOT yields analytically determined priorities for the factors included in SWOT analysis and makes them more commensurable. The hybrid method has been applied in connection with a case study on tourism industry in Agra (India) and result indicates that the factors related to tourism's internal environment (strengths and weaknesses) are relatively more important than external factors (opportunities and threats). In addition, strengths group turned out to have the highest priorities while threats group have the lowest priorities.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The general directions of the organization’s development should be clearly formulated, i.e., a business strategy should be developed in order to achieve the long-term competitive advantages in the operation of a pharmaceutical distributor with its own pharmacy warehouse in Russia. AIM: Identification of strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the operation of a pharmaceutical distributor with its own pharmacy warehouse. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SWOT analysis was used to analyze the environment, which enabled a joint study of the external and internal environment. During the study, content analysis of secondary sources of information was used (data from the Federal State Statistics Service, DSM Group marketing agency), as well as sociological analysis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: During the SWOT analysis, ten factors were identified that ensured the normal functioning of the pharmaceutical distributor, as well as 11 negative factors were identified that negatively affected the operation of the pharmacy warehouse. The article presents qualitative description of the strengths and weaknesses. Ten factors were attributed to the favorable opportunities for the organization’s activities; seven positions were considered as threats to the activities of the distributor. It should be noted that all factors of external environment are in a state of strong mutual influence. A change in one of the factors necessarily leads to a change in other factors. Therefore, their study and analysis should not be carried out separately, but systematically, with tracking not only the actual changes in one factor but also the process how these changes will affect other factors. After identifying strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, a table was compiled and all intersections were analyzed, i.e., all possible pairwise combinations that would help determining the future strategy. At present, the strategic goal of a number of wholesale companies in the pharmaceutical market is defined as increasing return on investment. CONCLUSION: In this article, SWOT analysis has been used to provide some suggestions on overcoming weaknesses and threats in the activities of a pharmaceutical distributor, as well as on proper use of strengths and opportunities. During the study, pharmaceutical industry practitioners discussed the impact of various economic factors, strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats regarding the activities of pharmaceutical distributor, as well as related problems and prospects for the future.

Abstract. It is well known that the influence of the internal and external drilling fluid on the lateral vibration characteristics of drillstring cannot be ignored. In this paper, experiment apparatus for simulating drillstring vibration was established. Hammering method is used to measure drillstring lateral natural vibration frequency when the internal and external drilling fluid is considered. The test results show that the drilling fluid can decrease the natural frequency of the drillstring. Based on the simulation model, considering the influence of the internal and external drilling fluid, an external drilling fluid additional mass coefficient is derived considering the dynamic pressure effect caused by external drilling fluid. Additional mass coefficient can get the result with high precision, which can meet the needs of the project. the simulation results are in good agreement with the test results, and the error is within 2 %. This work provides a useful attempt and lays the foundation for the dynamics of the drill string in the drilling fluid environment.

Environment (external factors) and user attributes (internal factors) affect the user's response to the environment. This study aims to uncover how the quality of the environment in high school as an external factor and student motivation as an internal factor affects the academic performance of the students. The research was conducted with qualitative and quantitative approach. Data were collected by survey using an online questionnaire. From the regression analysis, it was found that the dimensions of external factors of "classroom order", "social interaction and supervision" and "air quality" further increased the effectiveness of student learning rather than internal dimensions of "resilience and capacity building". Meanwhile, the decrease in air quality, noise, and environmental pollution can cause student learning disruption. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the learning environment plays an important role in shaping the effectiveness of student learning.

The article provides terminology for processes of digitalization and digital transformation. For structuring digital transformation processes, the authors offer a modification of the strategic scorecard and distinguish technologies as an additional perspective. Using business cases, the authors analyzed approaches to digital transformation, revealed principal digital transformation models, and described them. The interrelations between targets, models, and strategies of digital transformation are demonstrated. The authors argue that digital transformation has to be considered to be a part of corporate strategy rather than isolated processes, with common strategizing tools and metrics applied. External and internal environment elements for digital transformation are structured. It is shown that the internal digital environment can be evaluated with the companies’ digital maturity models. The external environment has a complex structure that can be described by the digital economy and society development in a country, a region, and a city; digital intensity level in an industry; and a digital ecosystem potential. All the authors’ contributions and conclusions are based on research papers, public statistical data, and analysis of Russian and foreign companies.

Abstract Introduction. Numerous international and local organisations and agencies have in the past 15 years dealt with various issues and problems related to tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Often, they have accentuated the large potential for tourism development and improvement, particularly when it comes to spa tourism. Although all elements necessary for development (tradition, accommodation capacities, natural resources, and traffic connections) are present, the “Banja Vrućica” spa is still unable to respond to modern tourism market demands so that it can contribute to the economic growth and development in the national and local economies. The successful running of a tourist destination requires the formulation of long-term goals and decisions, reached through a process of strategic management. The aim of this article is to use strategic analysis as a means of identifying the possibilities of introducing new sport-recreational offers with a higher quality of service provision aligned with consumer needs, which would help the Vrućica spa to become more attractive and profitable. Material and methods. After selecting factors of the internal and external environment which influence sport tourism at the spa, the intensity of the impact of each factor was determined through the use of SWOT analysis. Then, by multiplying the average impact of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats matched in the SWOT Matrix, a polygon SWOT analysis of the strategy was carried out. Conclusion. Having analysed the “Banja Vrućica” spa’s environment and having quantified the results, we reached the conclusion that the best solution is to form and implement a WO strategy with regard to sport tourism at the spa, meaning a shift in strategy aimed at keeping the existing activities and structures and developing new products and a new approach to the market.

Abstract:
Introduction: Community participation in health affairs and especially in the field of primary health care is one of the requirements for achieving the goals defined in this field. Accordingly, the present study was designed and implemented with the aim of strategic analysis of the internal and external environment in the field of primary health care in Iran and presentation of the promotion strategies to attract community participation. Methods: This is a qualitative study that was conducted using the internal and external environment assessment technique called SWOT. The data used were obtained through a semi-structured quality questionnaire and a survey on strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, as well as proposed promotion strategies to improve community participation in the field of primary health care. Results: Analysis of external environment of the field of primary health care in Iran regarding community participation led to the identification of the opportunities such as increasing community literacy, the possibility of using public spaces and media as well as influential people to attract community participation; and threats such as financial and employment constraints of families, citizens' unfamiliarity with their effective role in health, and inadequate intersectoral participation. The evaluation of the internal environment led to the identification of strengths in such as native selection policy for health workers; and weaknesses such as lack of attention to evidence-based performance and poor time access to health activities. Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicate that there are internal weaknesses and external threats to community participation in the field of primary health care.

Abstract:
Although the literature on evaluation has theorized about the distinction between internal and external evaluation, hardly any research has compared them empirically. This article examines whether the lessons of internal evaluations differed from those of external evaluations in the case of international development aid. It analyzes internal evaluations of the Asian Development Bank for nearly 1000 sovereign interventions across 38 countries in the Asia-Pacific during 1996–2016, using computational text analysis or text mining techniques. The results show that internal evaluations focused more on micro- and meso-level characteristics, while external evaluations laid more emphasis on meso- and macro-level constructs, such as dimensions of policy and the institutional environment in the recipient country, or its level and rate of economic growth. The article concludes that internal and external evaluations can be combined to create a multilevel evaluation framework that integrates micro-, meso-, and macro-level lessons to facilitate better learning.

The model is premised on the internal and external factors that impact on employees’ performance. The Complex Model of Motivation is deemed to be comprehensive in its application. It is noted that employees are plagued with various problems which negate on their performance. It is therefore, recommended that if this Model is applied it could go a long way in addressing most of the problems raised by employees at the workplace. This Model suggests a holistic approach involving internal and external factors that impact on the total work environment. The model is significant in that it identifies promising areas in which organisations can improve so as to provide conducive working environments.
