Abstract:

This article focuses on the results of my research project on cinemagoing heritage, concluding with the development of a matrix to analyse and categorise cinemagoing memories. What cinemagoing recollections come into the minds of the subjects in retrospect, and in what manner are these memories communicated? I explored the forms of how cinemagoing in the 1930s–1950s is remembered by eyewitnesses today. After seven to eight decades, the social habit of going to the cinema still occupies an important place in the collective memory of elderly people, particularly in rural communities. As my method of survey I chose the narrative video; I then plotted these memories on a map to categorise them.

AbstractWe analyse the rosette modes of oscillations in rotating stars, which are characterised by rosette patterns of the kinetic-energy distribution on the meridional plane. Following our previous argument that these modes are generated by the rotation-induced interaction among eigenmodes with almost the same frequency, we discuss the structure of the rosette patterns base on the JWKB analysis. We also demonstrate that there exist nonaxisymmetric rosette modes.

Abstract:
In the last few decades, there has been much progress on low loss waveguides, very efficient photon-number detectors and nonlinear processes. Engineered sum-frequency conversion is now at a stage where it allows operation on arbitrary temporal broadband modes, thus making the spectral degree of freedom accessible for information coding. Hereby the information is often encoded into the temporal modes of a single photon. Here, we analyse the prospect of using multi-photon states or squeezed states in different temporal modes based on integrated optics devices. We describe an analogy between mode-selective sum-frequency conversion and a network of spatial beam splitters. Furthermore, we analyse the limits on the achievable squeezing in waveguides with current technology and the loss limits in the conversion process. Abstract:

Abstract:
We consider a two-layer fluid of finite depth with a free surface and, in particular, the surface tension at the free surface and the interface. The usual assumptions of a linearized theory are considered. The objective of this work is to analyse the effect of surface tension on trapped modes, when a horizontal circular cylinder is submerged in either of the layers of a two-layer fluid. By setting up boundary value problems for both of the layers, we find the frequencies for which trapped waves exist. Then, we numerically analyse the effect of variation of surface tension parameters on the trapped modes, and conclude that realistic changes in surface tension do not have a significant effect on the frequencies of these.

Abstract:
The relationships between the acoustic signal and the modes of the welding pool, such as no-keyhole (melt-in), keyhole and cutting, in variable-polarity plasma arc welding are investigated. The Welch power spectral density (PSD) estimate and short-time Fourier transformation are implemented to analyse and identify the different modes of the welding pool. The results show that the no-keyhole mode (melt-in welding process) can be clearly distinguished from the keyhole and the cutting modes. The keyhole size is inversely proportional to the Welch PSD estimate of the acoustic signal.

Full text
Abstract:
Tuning the coupling of pulse duration and tool vibration in electrochemical machining (PVECM) is an effective method to improve machining accuracy and surface quality. In general, the pulse is set at the same frequency as the tool vibration, and a symmetrical distribution is attained at the minimum inter-electrode gap. To analyse the characteristics of the electrolyte fluid flow and of the electrolysis products in the oscillating inter-electrode gap, a dynamic simulation of the PVECM process was carried out. The simulation results indicated that the electrolyte pressure and gas void fraction when the pulse arrived as the inter-electrode gap was narrowing clearly differed from those when the inter-electrode gap was expanding. Therefore, in addition to the traditional symmetry coupling mode, two other coupling modes called the pre-position and the post-position coupling modes are proposed which use a pulse either just before or just after the minimum inter-electrode gap. Comparative experiments involving the feed rate and machining localization were carried out to evaluate the influence of the three coupling modes. In addition, current waveforms were recorded to analyse the differences between the three coupling modes. The results revealed that the highest feed rate and the best machining localization were achieved by using the pre-position coupling mode.

Abstract:
A unique type of oscillation modes has recently been identified in γ Doradus variables. These low-frequency modes are called Rossby modes (or r modes) because they consist of Rossby waves in each spherical layer. These waves are characterised by toroidal motions that are restored by the latitudinal variation in the Coriolis force. The horizontal oscillations are weakly coupled in the radial direction. We show that these modes can be used to probe the interior of the stars. The method of the ν − √Δν diagram, which has originally been developed to analyse another type of modes, Kelvin g-modes (or prograde sectoral g-modes), is extended to take Rossby modes into account. We first show based on a theoretical model and then on two stars, KIC 3240967 and KIC 12066947, that the method can be adapted to Rossby modes straightforwardly. In addition, we demonstrate that simultaneous analysis of Kelvin and Rossby modes results in (1) smaller uncertainties in the internal rotation rate and the characteristic period of gravity modes, and (2) a substantial reduction of the correlation between the estimates of the two parameters.

Creating, enlarging and excavating a harbour can modify the dynamic response of the basin. A verification of the resonance modes is common practice before undertaking the related work. This can be done numerically if the necessary assumptions are justifiable. It can be done on a small-scale model if the basin has an irregular shape or if the depth varies from one area to the other.A computer-programmed analytical method of resonance modes is presented. It is derived from the direct measure principle of successive oscillation superposition used in the laboratory. Validation is obtained by applying the method to existing theoretical solutions and to the analysis of a small creek of the Gaspe Peninsula where the importance of refraction in the analytical results is demonstrated. Abstract:
Abstract Parametric instability (PI), induced by the interaction between the cavity optical modes and acoustic modes of a mirror, is an inherent risk in interferometric gravitational wave detectors. The instability can result in exponential growth in acoustic mode amplitude and the saturation of detectors control systems. In this paper we analyse PI in the neutron star extreme matter observatory, a proposed high optical power (4.5 MW) detector, operating at cryogenic temperatures with silicon test masses (TMs), targeting high sensitivity between 1 and 4 kHz. Our results show that with current design parameters, approximately 16 unstable modes will arise per TM with maximum parametric gain ∼10. Varying the TM radius of curvature from the nominal values could eliminate PI, however not with current manufacture or actuator capability. PI mitigation will be required to suppress all unstable modes. This analysis identifies four optical modes and 16 acoustic modes dominating PI in NEMO paves the way for the design of PI mitigation strategies.

This paper presents the collaborative establishment of a group of speech and language pathologists (SLP) and linguists that focuses on scaffolding and its effects in interactions during therapy. Based on transcribed audio recordings made by the practitioners themselves, qualitative analyses were collectively conducted and individual scaffolding objectives relating to specific therapeutic goals were identified by the SLP. Quantitative analyses on two dyads suggest that the qualitative analyses conducted in the group influenced the SLP's productions which in turn might have had an impact on the children's productions. We discuss the need to use baselines adapted to ecological settings in further studies, to better evaluate the effects of other internal and external factors. We conclude by considering the benefits of this type of collaboration both for practitioners and linguists.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Recent observations of Jupiter and Saturn suggest that heavy elements may be diluted in the gaseous envelope, providing a compositional gradient that could stabilize ordinary convection and produce a stably stratified layer near the core of these planets. This region could consist of semiconvective layers with a staircase-like density profile, which have multiple convective zones separated by thin stably stratified interfaces, as a result of double-diffusive convection. These layers could have important effects on wave propagation and tidal dissipation that have not been fully explored. We analyse the effects of these layers on the propagation and transmission of internal waves within giant planets, extending prior work in a local Cartesian model. We adopt a simplified global Boussinesq planetary model in which we explore the internal waves in a non-rotating spherical body. We begin by studying the free modes of a region containing semiconvective layers. We then analyse the transmission of internal waves through such a region. The free modes depend strongly on the staircase properties, and consist of modes with both internal and interfacial gravity wave-like behaviour. We determine the frequency shifts of these waves as a function of the number of steps to explore their potential to probe planetary internal structures. We also find that wave transmission is strongly affected by the presence of a staircase. Very large wavelength waves are transmitted efficiently, but small-scale waves are only transmitted if they are resonant with one of the free modes. The effective size of the core is therefore larger for non-resonant modes.

Abstract:
We propose and study nonlinear mathematical models describing the intracellular time dynamics of viral RNA accumulation for positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. Our models consider different replication modes ranging between two extremes represented by the geometric replication (GR) and the linear stamping machine replication (SMR). We first analyse a model that quantitatively reproduced experimental data for the accumulation dynamics of both polarities of turnip mosaic potyvirus RNAs. We identify a non-degenerate transcritical bifurcation governing the extinction of both strands depending on three key parameters: the mode of replication ( α ), the replication rate ( r ) and the degradation rate ( δ ) of viral strands. Our results indicate that the bifurcation associated with α generically takes place when the replication mode is closer to the SMR, thus suggesting that GR may provide viral strands with an increased robustness against degradation. This transcritical bifurcation, which is responsible for the switching from an active to an absorbing regime, suggests a smooth (i.e. second-order), absorbing-state phase transition. Finally, we also analyse a simplified model that only incorporates asymmetry in replication tied to differential replication modes.

Abstract:
In this study, the reflectance and transflectance sample presentation mode were compared for the analysis of the nutrient content of hog ( Sus domesticus) manure using visible and near infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy. A total of 194 hog manures, which were collected in the spring of 2004 from farms in the northern part of Belgium, were assayed by conventional wet chemical analysis and spectroscopy for the following constituents: dry matter content (DM), organic matter content (OM), pH, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (Ntot), ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), phosphorus (P), potash (K), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na) and magnesium (Mg). Samples were scanned with a Foss NIRSystems Model 6500 scanning monochromator in reflectance and transflectance mode, respectively. A ceramic reference was measured in between the two modes. The monochromator was equipped with a DCFA sample presentation unit and ranges from 400 to 2498 nm. Partial least squares regression was employed to relate the spectral information to the nutrient content. The PLS models were calibrated for both sample presentation modes using leave-one-out cross-validation. The results of this study showed that the transflectance mode performed better than the reflectance mode. From the transflectance measurements, very good quantitative predictions for total N, good quantitative predictions for K, DM and OM, approximate predictions for NH4-N, P and Mg, very approximate predictions for Ca and a discrimination between high and low values for Na were obtained. pH was not predictable. The reflectance measurements were able to provide good quantitative predictions for total N and K, approximate quantitative predictions for NH4-N, very approximate predictions for DM, OM, P and Mg and discrimination between high and low values for Ca. Na was even less predictable and pH might be unpredictable.

Abstract:
After having revisited the theory of linear waves in the rotating shallow-water model with a straight coast and arbitrary shelf/beach bathymetry, we undertake a detailed study of resonant interaction of free Poincaré waves with modes trapped in the coastal waveguide. We describe and quantify the mechanisms of resonant excitation of waveguide modes and their subsequent nonlinear saturation. We obtain the modulation equations for the amplitudes of excited waveguide modes in the absence and in the presence of spatial modulation and analyse their solutions. Different saturation regimes are exhibited, depending on the nature of the modes involved. The excitation is proved to be efficient, i.e. the saturated amplitudes of the excited waves considerably exceed the amplitude of the generator waves. Back-influence of the excited waveguide modes onto the open ocean results in a phase shift of the reflected Poincaré waves and possible energy redistribution between them. A comparison of rotating and non-rotating cases displays substantial differences in excitation mechanisms in the two cases.

Abstract:
Batchelor's vortex has been commonly used in the past as a model for aircraft trailing vortices. Using a temporal stability analysis, new viscous unstable modes have been found for the high swirl numbers of interest in actual large-aircraft vortices. We look here for these unstable viscous modes occurring at large swirl numbers (q > 1.5), and large Reynolds numbers (Re >103), using a spatial stability analysis, thus characterizing the frequencies at which these modes become convectively unstable for different values of q, Re, and for different intensities of the uniform axial flow. We consider both jet-like and wake-like Batchelor's vortices, and are able to analyse the stability for Re as high as 108. We also characterize the frequencies and the swirl numbers for the onset of absolute instabilities of these unstable viscous modes for large q.

Abstract:
A correspondence between continuum periodic structures and discrete lattices is well known in the theory of elasticity. Frequently, lattice models are the result of the discretization of continuous mechanical problems. In this paper, we discuss the discretization of two-dimensional square thin-walled structures. We consider the case when thin-walled bridges have defects in the vicinity of junctions. At these points, the displacement satisfies an effective Robin-type boundary condition. We study a defect vibration mode localized in the neighbourhood of the damaged junction. We analyse dispersion diagrams that show the existence of standing waves in a structure with periodically distributed defects.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to empirically analyse the relationship between the trade wars and modes of transport for selected countries. For this purpose the causality relationship between trade value and sea transport / air transportation for EU-G20 and US-G20 countries was examined. Panel causality analysis was used as a method in the study. The empirical findings of the study show the existence of a causality relationship between the trade value and modes of transport (sea transport and air transport) for country groups. This shows that the countries' sea and air transport will be adversely affected by trade wars.

Abstract:
This study investigated whether the schema therapy constructs of schema coping and schema modes have val dity in adolescents. We examined the validity and reliability of the Schema Coping Inventory (SCI) and an 80-item version of the Schema Mode Inventory (SMI) in a mixed sample of adolescents. Confirmatory factor analyse showed that the first-order factor structures of the SCI and SMI were replicated, but that the hypothesized higher-order models of the SMI were not confirmed. Instead, we proposed an alternative higher-order model of Internalizing, Externalizing, Overachieving, and Healthy modes. In general, the SCI and SMI scales were able o distinguish the clinical sample from the community sample, and meaningful relationships were found between oping styles, schema modes, and behavior problems. In conclusion, our study supports the theorized relations ips between schema coping styles, schema modes, and behavior, problems in adolescents, and provides initial validation for the SCI and the, 80-item SMI in adolescent populations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Consider the directional solidification of a binary alloy rejecting a heavy solute as it solidifies upward. If the solidification front is planar, the fluid melt ahead of the front is stably stratified and convection is not expected. In this paper we analyse the linear stability of planar solidification asymptotically in the limit of large solutal Rayleigh number, R. Three distinct linear modes are found which correspond to internal waves, buoyancy edge waves, or morphological modes. Of these three modes, only the morphological modes are subject to an instability. We find that for large Rayleigh number this instability first occurs at long wavelengths with wavenumbers that scale on R−1/14. The scalings derived from the linear analysis are used to construct a nonlinear theory for the morphological instability in the large Rayleigh number limit. Similarity solutions are found which describe steadily convecting, non-planar growth reminiscent of an observed phenomenon known as steepling.

Abstract:
We consider some typical continuous and discrete models of structures possessing band gaps, and analyse the localized oscillation modes. General considerations show that such modes can exist at any frequency within the band gap provided an admissible local mass variation is made. In particular, we show that the upper bound of the sinusoidal wave frequency exists in a non-local interaction homogeneous waveguide, and we construct a localized mode existing there at high frequencies. The localized modes are introduced via the Green's functions for the corresponding uniform systems. We construct such functions and, in particular, present asymptotic expressions of the band gap anisotropic Green's function for the two-dimensional square lattice. The emphasis is made on the notion of the depth of band gap and evaluation of the rate of localization of the vibration modes. Detailed analysis of the extremal localization is conducted. In particular, this concerns an algorithm of a ‘neutral’ perturbation where the total mass of a complex central cell is not changed

Abstract:
The design of a breakwater requires that the failure modes which can affect its security, functionality and operationality in its useful life are bounded. The failure modes can be verified by means of the corresponding verification equation. In this work, a unified methodology to verify simultaneously the failure modes produce by wind waves in front or face of the breakwater is presented. This methodology is based on formulate the verification equations of the failure modes forced by wind waves in the front or face of the breakwater in terms of the kinematic and dynamic variables of the flow at these locations. It has been applied to analyse the failure mode that considers sliding of the crown wall. Results show that the parameters of the pdf of these variables depend on the total wave height at the same location and therefore, the verification equation can be also formulated in terms of this variable.

Abstract:
A key factor of the educational process success is psychological competently built didactic communication between a student and teacher. The problem is only the lack of both methodological unity in the general, theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of didactic communication itself, and the patchwork of practices aimed to optimize the didactic communication real process. The study objective is to analyse the didactic communication criteria between a teacher and student, their understanding as the basis for selection and comparative analysis of different strategies of the teacher and student didactic communication. The paper carries out a meaningful analysis of the teacher-student didactic communication criteria: educational interaction key constructs, its different sides and aspects in the ideas of the teacher; communication space and time modes, «the learning effect concepts», the image of a student in teacher ideas, typical communication means; a didactic communication organizational form reproduced by a teacher; the teacher communicative self-identification and research tools, the didactic communication correction. As study results, the authors conclude that at an infinite variety of individual-personal shades of didactic communication, in general, it seems possible to single out historically changing common, covering most of the teaching community, systems of ideas on the optimal strategy of educational interaction with students.

Abstract:
