Abstract:

This article focuses on the results of my research project on cinemagoing heritage, concluding with the development of a matrix to analyse and categorise cinemagoing memories. What cinemagoing recollections come into the minds of the subjects in retrospect, and in what manner are these memories communicated? I explored the forms of how cinemagoing in the 1930s–1950s is remembered by eyewitnesses today. After seven to eight decades, the social habit of going to the cinema still occupies an important place in the collective memory of elderly people, particularly in rural communities. As my method of survey I chose the narrative video; I then plotted these memories on a map to categorise them.

AbstractWe analyse the rosette modes of oscillations in rotating stars, which are characterised by rosette patterns of the kinetic-energy distribution on the meridional plane. Following our previous argument that these modes are generated by the rotation-induced interaction among eigenmodes with almost the same frequency, we discuss the structure of the rosette patterns base on the JWKB analysis. We also demonstrate that there exist nonaxisymmetric rosette modes.

Abstract:
In the last few decades, there has been much progress on low loss waveguides, very efficient photon-number detectors and nonlinear processes. Engineered sum-frequency conversion is now at a stage where it allows operation on arbitrary temporal broadband modes, thus making the spectral degree of freedom accessible for information coding. Hereby the information is often encoded into the temporal modes of a single photon. Here, we analyse the prospect of using multi-photon states or squeezed states in different temporal modes based on integrated optics devices. We describe an analogy between mode-selective sum-frequency conversion and a network of spatial beam splitters. Furthermore, we analyse the limits on the achievable squeezing in waveguides with current technology and the loss limits in the conversion process. Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Sliding Mode Control is a control technique with a long history, with research efforts dating back to the 50's. The basic idea is to define the control input as a discontinuous function of the sliding variable, which solely depends on the state, and to constraint the system to evolve on a manifold, hence the term sliding. Over the years a strong theory was build around this technique, but only in continuous time. In our context, this means that control input value can change value at any time. The discrete-time case is when the control input can only change at isolated time instants and the dynamical system on which the control is still a continuous-time process. The control input is therefore a step function. This case appears when the controller is digitally implemented, for instance with the help of a microcontroller. This kind of setup is nowadays ubiquitous in benchmarks and industrial applications. One of the main limitation of the applicability of sliding mode control is the chattering phenomenon that is witnessed when this control technique is applied in practice, but already in simulations. In contrast to previous approaches, we single out the chattering that is already witnessed in simulation, even with no disturbance and with perfect knowledge of the dynamics. This is called the numerical chattering and one of its distinct feature is the constant chattering, or high-frequency bang-bang behavior, of the control input. This naturally induces a chattering of the sliding variable. The claim that this type of chattering is usually predominant and that it is due to a bad discretization of the signum multifunction. The approach developed in this work was inspired by the research effort in the nonsmooth mechanical to properly simulate some systems like those with dry friction and/or unilateral constraints. The main point is to discretize the signum in an implicit fashion, that is its argument is the value of the sliding variable at the end of the next sampling period. With this change, the numerical chattering can be removed in the simplest cases, largely attenuated. The research effort was focused on classical sliding mode controller, rather than the higher order ones. The frameworks used to perform the analysis are convex analysis and variational inequalities. This discrete-time controller enjoys several interesting theoretical properties. First it is finite-time Lyapunov stable: the sliding variable goes to 0 in finite-time. The discrete-time control input converges to the continuous-time one as the sampling period goes to 0. The control action also attenuates the effect of matched perturbations. Also the increase of the gain of the controller does not affect the performances when the system is sliding. The twisting controller can be discretized in the same way and is also finite-time Lyapunov stable. This good theoretical properties have been verified in simulations, but also on experimental setups. Two tests were conducted: the first one on an electropneumatic system, where both the classical first-order sliding mode controller and the twisting algorithm were tested. The objective was to track a reference trajectory. The second one was an inverted pendulum on a cart with only the classical SMC. The goal was to stabilize the system at the unstable equilibrium. The analysis from the data collected during those experiments shows that the proposed controllers perform better than the their explicitly discretized versions. The performances are better and the chattering is effectively reduced

Abstract:
Abstract:
Asteroseismology provides information on the internal structure of stars by studying their pulsations. Among the targets of CoRot, Kepler or Tess satellites, there is an important part of rapidly rotating stars whose spectrum is still difficult to exploit. The poor understanding of the spectrum structure is one of the reasons for this difficulty. Asymptotic methods are effective to understand the organization of the spectrum and relate it to the physical properties of the star. Asymptotically, the propagation of acoustic rays is described by a Hamiltonian system. If the star is almost spherical, the dynamics of the system is completely integrable. However, the rotation flattens the star, resulting in a transition of the dynamics to a mixed regime with both integrable zones and chaotic zones in the phase space. In this thesis we study the oscillation modes associated with chaotic regions of phase space. The chaotic modes usually studied, e.g. in quantum billiards or optical cavities, have an irregular spectrum which follows a statistical distribution predicted by Random Matrix Theory. Stars differ from these systems by the fact that the stellar medium is highly inhomogeneous. In particular the sound speed is smaller near the surface by several orders of magnitude compared to the core. Thus, the travel time between two rebounds is approximately the same for all acoustic rays. Using the tools of quantum chaos, we show that this effect causes a regular spacing of frequencies in the spectrum of chaotic modes, which can be linked to an average sound speed in the stellar interior. This result provides a better understanding of the asymptotic structure of the spectrum of p-modes in rapid rotators

AbstractFilm and text can be complementary modes of theory formation in the field of migration studies. If the theoretical potential of filmmaking is recognized in research, this also opens opportunities for teaching migration theory through film. This argument is illustrated here through the project Living like a common man, in which both film and text were used to observe, analyse, and theorize the migration experiences of young Indians to the UK - as ‘middling migration’. The resulting film offers a stand-alone argument that is used as teaching material in courses of migration studies; while accompanying texts make the argument explicit and clarify its significance for migration scholarship.

Abstract This chapter presents a comparative study between Milan (Italy) and Porto (Portugal) to analyse the perceived tourism impacts of these two urban destinations on host communities. The chapter explores resident-tourist interactions from the residents' perspective and, by using a mixed-methods approach, attempts to show that residents tend to have different modes of interaction with and hold diverse attitudes to tourism development. In particular, in Porto tourism is perceived as a main driver of change in the old town that generates both positive and negative attitudes, while residents of Milan perceive that while the city is less dependent on tourism development, tourism is integrated in the general transformation of the city and takes place in a more dispersed, spatial manner. As a result, it is concluded that host-guest encounters occur more frequently in the historical centre of Porto compared to Milan.

Abstract:
Abstract Self-excited high-frequency combustion instabilities were investigated in a 42-injector cryogenic rocket combustor under representative conditions. In previous research it was found that the instabilities are connected to acoustic resonance of the shear-coaxial injectors. In order to gain a better understanding of the flame dynamics during instabilities, an optical access window was realised in the research combustor. This allowed 2D visualisation of supercritical flame response to acoustics under conditions similar to those found in European launcher engines. Through the window, high-speed imaging of the flame was conducted. Dynamic Mode Decomposition was applied to analyse the flame dynamics at specific frequencies, and was able to isolate the flame response to injector or combustion chamber acoustic modes. The flame response at the eigenfrequencies of the oxygen injectors showed symmetric and longitudinal wave-like structures on the dense oxygen core. With the gained understanding of the BKD coupling mechanism it was possible to derive LOX injector geometry changes in order to reduce the risks of injection-coupled instabilities for future cryogenic rocket engines.

Abstract:
AbstractSámi teacher education programs are core programs at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences, and have been since the establishment of the institution. Sámi teacher education programmes involve flexible teaching methods including online teaching, teaching at gatherings and through practicum periods at early childhood centres and primary schools. The aim of this chapter is to discuss Sámi teacher education as Indigenous higher education, in order to explore the cornerstones of Sámi teacher education. The method used in the present study combines content analyses and a narrative approach. Content analysis is a research tool used to analyse the official documents for teacher education programmes and programme syllabi at Sámi University of Applied Sciences. The narrative approach was selected in order to use personal experiences from Sámi teacher education. As an analytical tool the model of Madden’s (2015) pedagogical pathways in Indigenous teacher education were used. The pathways are learning from traditional Indigenous modes of teaching, pedagogy for decolonizing, Indigenous and antiracist education, and Indigenous and placed-based education. Traditions, traditional knowledge and traditional models of teaching, together with language, are central in Sámi teacher education. Sámi teacher education could also be viewed in connection to placed-based education. Decolonizing is part of the educators’ work to transform and implement traditional knowledge and culture-based teaching perspectives, and in educators’ work to deconstruct culture, history and Indigenous identity. The term “colonial” is not used explicitly. However even if the term is not present, colonialism is indirectly visible. The antiracist education is less visible. All the pathways are visible in Sámi teacher education, but to visualise in Sámi teacher education the cornerstones, the metaphor of the lávvu and three caggi, or poles, is used and the caggit are, in the Sámi language, árbediehtu, and girjás searvelatnja.

This work takes as reference the paradigm of the transnational modes of remembering, as proposed by Cultural Memory Studies, to approach the case of Galician novel about the Civil War and Francoism published since the year 2000, in the context of the revival of the past in the Spanish public sphere. After explaining the theory of modes of remembering, the chapter reviews the characteristics of antagonism, cosmopolitanism and agonism to analyse to what extent Galician writers have adopted these discourses in their stories of the recent past. The study concludes that there is a growing agonistic memory that investigates the perpetrator and the complexity of the historical context.

This case study will describe and analyse how the experiences of online language teaching at the University of Cambridge gained during the first UK lockdown helped to inform planning for the next academic year. Emergency measures implemented for the third term of the academic year 2019/2020 were evaluated. A curriculum of blended teaching combining synchronous and asynchronous modes was developed and is being implemented now. Particular attention will be paid to modes of examining and teaching, the role of the teacher, and the use of technologies. It will become clear that inclusive and interactive teaching will continue and that some of the newly acquired skills may stay with us. However, other aspects of language teaching such as building a sense of a learner cohort have been found to be much more difficult to replicate online.

Abstract:
The present study analyses a group of students' multimodal productions who are learning a second language within a cooperative learning context using the iPad in a 1:1 format. They turn the act of creating free narrative written texts into a complex communicative process where two modes of representation are employed: written text and still images. These narratives become documents where the language of words and images are interrelated, generating production and communicative processes which should be understood in their double dimension: a) analyse the value the students give to the images in their compositions; and b) taking the narrative as an integrated text, where the systems of representation interact. Examples of experiences using mobile technologies studying the processes of learning generated in school contexts are still scarce. It is important to analyse didactic proposals which incorporate formative tasks in the classroom using these technologies, such as this case.

Abstract:
Self-piercing riveting, as an alternative joining method to spot-welding, has attracted considerable interest from the automotive industry and has been widely used in aluminium intensive vehicles. One of the important factors that need to be considered is the effect of cyclic loading in service, leading to possible fatigue failure. The previous work reported in the public domain on the behaviour of self-piercing rivets has mainly focused on static tests. The work which is reported in this paper is concerned with the fatigue behaviour of single-rivet joints, joining two 2mm 5754 aluminium alloy sheets. The investigation also examined the effect of interfacial conditions on the fatigue behaviour. A number of fatigue failure mechanisms were observed based on rivet fracture, sheet fracture and combinations of these. The investigation has shown that they were dependent on the applied load and the sheet surface condition. Three-parameter Weibull analysis, using Reliasoft Weibull ++5.0 software, was conducted to analyse the experimental results. The analysis enabled the prediction of early-type failure (infant mortality failure) and wear-out failure patterns depending on the condition of the self-piercing riveted joints and the alloy sheet surface.

Abstract:
In this paper I propose and analyse IO devices in which nonlinearity and bistability are caused by the radiation forces of the evanescent field of the guided modes exerted on an 'effective-index-shifting' element E, which is a micromachined, light-weight, movable, non-absorbing dielectric plate separated from the waveguide by a very small gap. The resulting nanometer displacements of this element E provide the nonlinearity of the effective refractive index N of the guided mode.

Abstract:
Nonlinear normal mode (NNM) analysis is one emerging technique to analyse the nonlinear vibration of bladed-disk. It links the resonance frequency to the energy present in the system, and allows a simple identification of internal resonances in the structure. Non-linear vibration analysis is traditionally carried out under the assumption that the mechanical properties and forcing function are deterministic. Since every mechanical system is by nature uncertain a truly accurate nonlinear dynamic analysis requires the inclusion of random variables in the response predictions. The propagation of random input uncertainties in a NNM analysis is the main aim of the presented work. The Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) will be used to calculate the NNMs for a contact problem in a computationally efficient way. The stochastic NNM permits to quantify the effect of uncertainties on the resonance frequency and the change in mode shape due to non-linearities, leading to the calculation of uncertain internal resonances. The proposed method is initially applied to a simple spring-mass system to demonstrate the effects of uncertainty on the NNM predictions. In a second step a blade-casing interaction with localized contact non-linearity is investigated with a real geometry. The resulting NNMs show the presence of internal resonance for both cases.

This paper seeks to analyse the forms of organisation of scientific communities, based on their management of both presential and virtual modes. There is a preliminary comparison of various networks of researchers, with details from the case of the RII as an international and interdiscipinary space for research, based on the activities of research, edition, diffusion and teaching and the use of presential and virtual modes. It is proposed that scientific communities constitute one of the principal social forms of the knowledge society; that these communities depend increasingly on the use of information and communication technology; but that there is a wide variety in their ways of organising networks and using information and communiction technology, according to the style of each network.

Abstract:
The object of paper is analysis of natural ventilation system in central greenhouse of Botanical garden in Kosice. The greenhouse was refurbished in 2015. The existing greenhouse covering from glass panels was replaced for polycarbonate panels. The ventilation system of central greenhouse is natural and there are used openings in covering (wall, roof). It is combination of thermally and wind driven ventilation. The main aim of contribution is to analyse different modes of natural ventilation during summer period mainly. The important factors that influence efficiency of natural ventilation in greenhouse are location and area of openings, temperature stratification in greenhouse, solar radiation level, wind speed and direction too. If the greenhouse is ventilated naturally only through external windows (roof windows are closed) the efficiency of ventilation is very poor. The defined modes of natural ventilation search the right location and size of opened windows in order to achieve the most efficiency ventilation of indoor environment. For this purpose the progressive dynamic simulation tool DesignBuilder is used where the geometrical and specific calculated model of whole central greenhouse was created.

Abstract:
In Europe, tanks designed on different safety philosophies are used for transporting one and the same liquid dangerous goods (Krautwurst, 2011). Owing to this circumstance, the BAM was commissioned by the BMVBS to conduct a research project designed to analyse and assess the equipment of tanks. Furthermore in these project were researched some failure mechanism of pressure relief devices (PRD). Based on the knowledge gained, possible solutions were worked out under safety-relevant aspects that would benefit tank transport by providing a lower hazard potential. Besides looking at the mode of operation and the construction of PRV, their blow-off characteristics and total flow rate are considered from a safety engineering point of view. Based on in-depth studies, a concept for and the further approach to examinations of the failure limits of PRD, especially of spring loaded relief valves, was developed and comprehensively described in the report “The use of safety devices, particularly safety valves, on transport containers” (Pötzsch, Reich, & Jochems, 2011). The purpose of this study was to investigate failure causes of safety valves by normal modes and accidental fire heat loads. A series of investigations for different influences using safety valves for tanks were obtained. Testing vibration modes and corrosion presents some design limits. Experimental study of a pressure vessel engulfing in fire identify significant design limits. The complete set of results provides direct information of fail-safe modes and discusses the usage.

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to analyse the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and the travel behaviour of Trinidadians. Many studies have shown that a relationship exists between the socio-economic and sociodemographic characteristics of an individual and their travel patterns. A better understanding of this relationship can influence transportation policy decisions and therefore, aid in improvement to the overall transportation structure. This understanding of travel behaviour is of particular importance in developing countries and SIDS, where there is limited geographical space, economic constraints and an influx of competitive unregulated paratransit modes into the transportation system. Trinidad, like other developing countries and SIDS, has a public transportation system that is dominated by paratransit modes. More notably, there is increasing penetration of illegally operated paratransit modes, that are aggressively competing in the market and gaining a lot of traction. Data was collected in January 2018 using a revealed preference survey of commuters’ work-based tours in, Trincity, a middle-income housing area with good highway and public transportation access. Results showed that income, age, distance from workplace and gender all affect the likelihood of public transport usage as a primary mode of a work tour and there were gender-based differences in the incidence of walking as part of the tour. Additionally, although most public transportation users considered the government bus service as the safest and illegal paratransit services as the least safe, the usage of such services was more than five times that of the bus. The research points to important service and policy actions which need to be taken to encourage and support shifts to more sustainable modes.

Abstract:
Drop weight impact tests are performed to examine the plastic response and failure of clamped rectangular cross-section tubes struck transversely by a hemispherical indenter. The laboratory results are compared with numerical simulations. The span lengths of the tube specimens are 125 and 250 mm, and they are impacted at the mid-span and the quarter-span. Moreover, the impact point along the width direction is located at the central position and displaced 10 mm from the centre, respectively. The results show that the impact location strongly influences the impact response of the tubes. The experimental results are presented in terms of the force-displacement responses and the failure modes, showing a good agreement with the simulations performed by the LS-DYNA finite element solver. The numerical results manage to describe the process of initiation and propagation of the material fracture and provide detailed information to analyse the large inelastic deformation and failure of tubular components subjected to impact loading. The deformation and failure characteristics of the rectangular tubes are well described on the basis of the relevant failure modes observed in beams, plates and circular tubes. Moreover, the influence of the impact location on the strength of tube specimens is elaborated.

Marsden, Eric.

Full text
