Tabet, Michel. Paris, EHESS, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010EHES0437.
A study of Shia ceremonies celebrating Ashura in Nabatiyya (South Lebanon), this dissertation investigates the potential of the moving image in describing cultural performances. It is based on fieldwork demonstrating how rituals serve as means of expressing a wide range of social interests, rather than simply creating a homogenous identity. Both direct observation and audiovisual techniques are used: the former to highlight the structural and organizational aspects of ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of Imâm Husayn in Karbala (Iraq) in 680 A. D. , with chapters dedicated to the different forms of ritual and exploring their religious and social background; the latter to examine the inner working of the rituals, using a series of documentaries. This work also analyzes video segments produced by the participants themselves and reveals the impact of communication technologies on religion. From a theoretical standpoint, it demonstrates the extent to which visual anthropology is a means of apprehending and understanding movement in society. Ritual, considered as total filmmic fact, shows us the potential and limitations of the use of the moving image in social sciences
Paris 5, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA05H022.
In the present study we only take interest to underground, and independant films and directors a motion picture film exists as a result of cutting. By deleting some scenes and assembling others into a desired sequence, most of the time the director got his film. When suddenly the film is going through a sequence to another, we ordinary say there is a cut. At this particuliar place stands what we call here a mental image. We present here an analysis, in a sociological way, of these mental impressions. From the data we got through the latter analysis, we organized our results and compared them with data and results we obtained from the observation of the common and domestic life. At last, questionning the two parts of our study, we can define our new manners of thinking, of acting, and simply of being, as Emile Durkheim did two hundred years ago

In this thesis, the main contributions are to study 2 main aspects of image quality including image aesthetic, image naturalness and the relations between the 2 concepts. More specifically, image aesthetic is the measure of how aesthetically a photo fulfills the observer’s expectation while the image naturalness definition is both related to artifacts induced by some image processing algorithms and to the individual feeling about how a picture matches with image memory. On the side of image aesthetic, the thesis deals with the problem of evaluating the roles of pre-processing operations in image aesthetic assessment. Image aesthetic assessment models based on prior image segmentation (region of interest extraction) and prior image classification (large field / close-up image classification) have been developed and compared with image aesthetic assessment models without pre-processing stages. At the same time different models base either on handcrafted features or learned features have been studied for the purpose of image aesthetic estimation. Based on the obtained results, an image aesthetic assessment model based on image classification and region segmentation has been introduced and evaluated. On the side of image naturalness, image naturalness of standard dynamic range images, especially tone-mapped images have been studied with both subjective and objective methodologies. A subjective experiment has been organized to collect human evaluations about image naturalness first. Then, various objective algorithms have been validated on the collected subjective data for the image naturalness assessment task. This work focuses on the problem of developing a model firstly to estimate if an image looks natural or not to humans and the second purpose is to try to understand how the unnaturalness feeling is induced by a photo: "Are there specific unnaturalness clues or is unnaturalness a general feeling when looking at a photo?". Finally, the relations between the 2 aspects: image aesthetic and image naturalness have been evaluated and discussed

In the framework of the present ongoing debates about the role and power of images, our work aims to explore the extent and the discontinuous characterizing the historical relations between visibilities and practices of images in the light of the research of the philosopher Michel Foucault. The first part analyzes the role of descriptions and pictorial evocations in Foucault's works which can be associated with archaeological analysis; its objective is to show the singular relation between images and the historical emergence of different “modalities of seeing” in their articulations with discursive practices. Thanks to the analysis of texts and unedited manuscripts on painting, the second part points out the discrepancies between the visual dimension of Foucauldian research and the methodological elaboration of the archaeological discourse, with its claim to disclose a field of coherence for the discursive analysis. In light of the debates between art history's methodology and philosophy in France at the time, our analysis presents this apparently marginal section of the research of Foucault as an attempt to consider the cultural dispositions of visibility and the historical configurations of visual presentation as differently articulated through historical modalities. The third part analyzes various Foucauldian experiments concerning image practices. Through the study of archival material, the political stakes of the Foucauldian reflection about pictorial modernity through the emergence of the notion of critique as attitude are presented

This research is made up with three parts, each one dealing with advertising pictures. It tackles the subject from the visual arts angle. The first part : «Public pictures» deals with a definition of the word «advertising» (etymology, historical background. . . ). The second part «Personnal pictures», deals with the author’s artistic approach (a photo report about the concept of cars in itself). His work and his reflexion concerning the use of pictures in teaching activities. The last part «Car advertising pictures» is built around a sociological anlysis of the theme of advertising. By presenting one of the objects of our times, it reveals contemporary social trends

The Tunnel questions representation as it sets images against discourse and reminds us of a century where image and discourse have served the propaganda of fascist and totalitarian regimes. The complex inter-semiotic play developed by William Gass creates a space of disobedience and résistance against a narration whose authoritarian and destructive goals exposes a mentality that the author called the "fascism of the heart". The objective of this dissertation is to observe the way image negotiates its place in the text in order to compete with a narrative discourse. In the first part of this study, I focus on the opposite roles of image and speech. The second part deals with the notion of "iconotext", as defined by Michael Nerlich and Alain Montandon, through the analysis of inter-semiotic experimentations in an attempt to restore the dialogic dimension of language from protean letters to sentences that shape calligrams. The third part of this study observes how a formal transaction between narration and photography participates in the foundation of a photographical writing that echoes the pictorial poetics defined by Liliane Louvel. The fourth and last part is dedicated to dream narratives, that relate to metafiction as they are stories within stories, and investigates images as products of figurative speech

A novel, Goya’s dream, is the « creative » part of this PHD. It fantasizes the dream of the painter Goya who believes he is in a remote village, the Mallos, and finds his true artistic vocation in this delirium. The engravings Los Caprichos inspired this phantasmagorical world. The academic dissertation first offers a reflection on the relationship between writing and those fascinating and distant images, far apart from today’s world: the conception of art, our sensitivity have evolved. Horror is no longer attached to vice, but to History or social exclusion. Then, three works are analysed: The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat, an obsessive delirium on an image. Pierre Michon’s Dieu ne finit pas, or Goya between splendour and misery; and Rêves de Rêves by Antonio Tabucchi, a collection of made-up dreams. The three of them, just like Goya, write with images and play on reversibility while revealing various ideas on art far from the spirit of the Enlightenment which was also Goya’s. The genetics examination of the two unfinished projects which preceded Goya’s Dream, is joined to this analysis. This dissertation, based on the relationship between an original novel and Goya’s engravings, on the analysis of the work of other writers, and on the later reflection on unfinished projects, examines the relationship between fiction and image through critical analysis and practice
Abid, Mohamed Abderrahmen. "Diverse Image Generation with Very Low Resolution Conditioning." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/70396.
Traditionally, when it comes to generating high-resolution (HR) images from a low-resolution(LR) images, the methods proposed so far have mainly focused on super-resolution techniques that aim at recovering the most probable image from low-quality image. Doing so ignores the fact that there are usually many valid versions of HR images that match a given LR image. The objective of this work is to obtain different versions of HR images from the same LR imageusing a generative adversarial model. We approach this problem from two different angles. First, we use super-resolution methods, where in addition to the LR image, the generator can be parameterized by a latent variable to produce different potential variations of the image. Such a conditioning allows to modulate the generator between retrieving the closest image to the ground truth and a variety of possible images. The results demonstrate our superiority in terms of reconstruction and variety of plausible hallucinated images compared to other state-of-the-art methods. The second approach builds on the work of image-to-image translation, by proposing a new approach where the model is conditioned on a LR version of the target. More precisely, our approach aims at transferring the fine details of an HR source image to fit the general structure, according to the LR version of it. We therefore generate HR images that share the distinctive features of the HR image and match the LR image of the target duringdownscaling. This method differs from previous methods that focus instead on translatinga given image style into target content. Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate improvements in visual quality, diversity, and coverage over state-of-the-art methods such asStargan-v2.

France enjoys a privileged status in Lebanon, mainly due to the centuries-long history that both countries share. The culture and the language, on one side, but also the administration, the educational and legal systems, on the other side, were greatly influenced by France. Besides, Lebanon is a Francophone country which was among the first that helped build the institutionnal Francophonie, before joigning the organization as a full member. In order to have an understanding of the Lebanese background in which France was evolving, we will trace the history of French-Lebanese relations in a first part. However, our focus will be on the 2005 and 2006 Lebanese crises. In a second part, we will concentrate on the importance of francophonie in Lebanon, before working on tying or untying the notions of "francophonie" and "francophilia". We will then study the French stereotypes in Lebanon, as well as those associated with the other major state actors. We will therefore see to which extent the image of France has benefited, or rather suffered, from the French State's action in the 2005 and 2006 Lebanese crises. Our work is based on a main corpus consisting of a series of semi-directive interviews conducted in Lebanon, as well as of a corpus of press articles, to which we added a secondary corpus
Beauregard, Martin. Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010574.
A photographic work is built around a story, one being narrated by the text or the image, one that one is telling just to oneself or that is being shared with others. Such a work is animated by the problematic relationships it may have with the novel or the film, partly caused by its fixed ontological purpose and the narrative effects it produces in the spectator’s imaginary world. The concept of image-écartelée brings forth this tension between the photography and the experience of creation. It allows one to contemplate the various processes of deconstruction and reconstruction of the image, generating a profound reflection concerning the structural matrices and semiotic narratives. L ’image—écartelêe asks us to examine the different modalities of allegory and reflexivity of the photographic medium in its relation to the images in the narrative. By this means, et multiple interplay of temporalities is produced, between the story and the memories it evokes, which retraces even the act of writing and a personal practice of the photographic art
Toulouse 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011TOU30023.
Dose verification is a major issue in radiotherapy. Nowadays, verification is only done partially in clinical practice. This is mainly a consequence of the incompatibility between treatment procedures and irradiation control measurements. Shortly after portal image detectors introduction, their dosimetric properties were proved and the question about their utilisation for dose verification purposes arose. The present work explores this question in the framework given by existing dose calculation methods and it is composed by three parts; the first one is a feasibility and theoretical study about dose estimation using only portal measurements. The second part deals with portal image retro-propagation into the patient in order to estimate the deposed dose within it, used method is driven by the theoretical observations done in the previous part and it's based in the kernel deposition method. Dose estimation by portal image retro-propagation (as done in this work) needs a reliable and fast deposition kernel calculation to handle heterogeneous mediums, the last part of this work addresses this calculation within a non-parametric statistical framework, kernel estimation is then treated as a regression problem

This study is leading with the analysis of food advertisings pictures published in magazines and concerning food and drinks, excepted alcoholic drinks. It objective is: - in the one hand to evaluate the importance of their relationships to social-cultural, socio-economics, religious, psychological, physiological and nutritional factors of consumers food behavior - in the other hand to investigate their coherence with the scientific nutritional knowledge. The data have been collected during one year (from years 1990 to 1991) in various French magazines for general public. A general review of the actual knowledge concerning the several which have an influence on the food behavior is presented in the first part. The second part takes stocks of the economical situation of french food factories and the specificity of the food marketing is pointed out. Afterwards the French markets for the foods quoted in food advertising pictures are described in details. Finally the data of our own analytic and synthetic study of these pictures are presented: analysis according to each type of foods, typing of the motivations incited evaluation of their respective importance. This study shows: - how the conscious and unconscious motivations are incited by the food publicity, - which is the degree of agreement between these motivations and that show off by the research works on food behavior, - what is the coherence between the food pictures data and the right and validated knowledge in human nutrition
Stefanescu, Radu-Constantin. "Parallel nonlinear registration of medical images with a priori information on anatomy and pathology." Nice, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005NICE4090.
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a nonrigid registration algorithm adapted to atls to subject registration in a clinical environment. The clinical applications addressed are the pre-operative planning of conformal brain radiotherapy and of the deep brain stimulation of Parkinsonian patients. In these applications, the nonrigid registration is used to deform expert segmentations of an anatomical atlas image into a patient’s geometry. The proposed algorithm uses a dense displacement field to finally model the transformation, and an intensity-based similarity criterion to estimate the matches between the two images. The invertibility of the recovered transformation is guaranteed thanks to a new and fast regridding method. The regularization is implemented in a two-step viscoelastic-like model. A non-stationary and possibly anisotropic regularization of the displacement field models the space-varying deformability of different structures. A non-stationary regularization of the temporal derivative of the similarity criterion allows to weight informative vs. Non-informative voxels, and to avoid errors due to pathologies in the patient image. The use of a semi-implicit numerical scheme enables fair computation times. We also propose a parallel implementation on a cluster of personal computers that further reduces the execution time to only a few minutes. Finally, we use grid computing methods to tightly couple the quite heavy parallel architecture to a lightweight visualization system

The novel "Šowhar-e Âhu Xanom" ( the husband of Âhu Xanom) of Ali-Mohammad Afghâni describes the conditions of the Iranian woman in an Iranian town in the South of Iran (Kurdistan). The novel depicts the relations between the husband and his wife and shows the oppression of woman in a traditional society. Marriage is an important question depicted by the novelist in his town (Kerman Shah). Some important traditions of that traditional society are also depicted in the novel : polygamy and temporary marriage. The author shows their bad impact on the life of the Iranian woman

The aim of this work is to analyz colour pictures accompanied with texts in advertisments taken from three french magazines. This semiotic analysis consists in : -first, finding out which messages are expressed through these pictures, and hox the aim is achieved; in other words, how are the iconographique components of the picture organized in relation to one another to express messages? - secondly, trying to show the relationship(s) existing between the picture and the text, the iconic and the verbal language. Thirdly, bringing ont the similarities and differences in ad- vertisment pictures in the three magazines analyzed. In other words, trying to find ont if by analyzing the pictures used in each three magazines, one can detect the type of readers each of them caters for. Emphasis will be on exploiting social components such as woman, man, family, etc. In expressing motivating messages. - fourthly, exploring the strategies used by each magazine, de- limiting the target among the readers of each, defining motivations and the means through which these motivations are expressed. .

This dissertation focuses on the paternel concept in french contemporary literature. After a cursory historical and linguistic study, first six works from Colette, Duhamel, Gide, Gyp, Martin du Gard and Mauriac, published between 1924 and 1945 are examined. It exudes a portrait of the father in his relationship to his children by means of terms related to pere and associated predicates. Second, the same research was undertaken, this time on works from A. Ernaux, A. Robbe-Grillet J. M. Roberts, N. Sarraute, J. P. Sartre, O. Todd et M. Yourcenar, published between 1964 and 1985. This study enables one to witness the slow evolution on the paternel image, but not so clear in literature than in everyday life

A visual servoing scheme consists of a closed-loop control approach which uses visual information feedback to control the movement of a robotic system. This data, called visual features, can be 2D or 3D. This thesis deals with the development of a new generation of 2D direct visual servoing methods in which the signal control inputs are the coefficients of a multiscale image representation. Specially, we consider the use of multiscale image representations that are based on discrete wavelet and shearlet transformations. This kind of representations allows us to obtain several descriptions of the image based on either low or high frequencies levels. Indeed, high coefficients in the wavelet or in the shearlet transformation of the image correspond to image singularities. This thesis has begun with the development of a shearlet-based visual servoing for ultrasound imaging that has performed well in precision and robustness for this medical application. Nevertheless, the main contribution is a framework allowing us to use several multi-scale representations of the image. It was then tested with conventional white light camera and with an optical coherence tomography imaging system with nominal and unfavorable conditions. Then, the wavelet and the shearlet based methods showed their accuracy and their robustness in several conditions and led to the use of both visual servoing and compressed sensing as the main perspective of this work

The purpose of this work was to contribute to the explanation of achievement differences between social groups. Several studies have revealed that the reputations of intellectual inferiority that usually target stigmatized group members can alter their cognitive functioning (i. E. Stereotype threat hypothesis, Steele, 1997). Though research has repeatedly demonstrated that the performance of low status group members, (e. G. Blacks in the United states or women) can be disrupted by stereotypes alleging intellectual inferiority when they are made salient, very little id known about the process underlying this pehnomenon. We hypotesized that the suspicion of lower ability faced by low status group members in evalutive settings can lead them to focus on the self-evalutation implications of a potential low performance. This focalization in turns would generate sel-regulation demands that would disrupt performance on the main task. Our first study shows that evaluative situations affect stigmatized individuals' self-esteem and motivation. Moreover, when these individuals have the opportunity to affirm positive aspects of the self, their performance increases (studies 2, 3 and 4). In other words and in accordance with our hypothesis, stereotype threat appears to involve some self-regulation. However studies 5 and 6 did not allow us to determine if individuals's focus on negative self-knowledge iduces a self-regulation activity interfering with performance. Nevertheless, our work suggests that self-image devaluation generated by negative stereotypes applicability in testing situations is responsible for stereotype threat effects. Further research we review and discuss reveals that, when intellectual abilities are not perceived as fixed anymore, or when some low status individuals invalidate negative sterotypes of their group, members of these stigmatized groups perform better in evaluative situations
