Abstract:
The Writing of Furor by Seneca and Racine: The Example of Phèdre ABSTRACT: In his tragedy, Phaedra, Seneca portrayed a queen damned, doomed and ravaged by lovesickness. Jean Racine followed his Latin predecessor and tried to analyse the major causes of the furor that seizes the queen. Through this study, we will highlight two different conceptions of dolor that constitute the reflections of two original visions of the world and of things. This research work, revolving around the dramaturgical, aesthetic and ideological dimensions of the Greek myth, is realized in a philological and comparative approach.

Abstract:
Abstract This article aims to analyse the dynamics of the making and unmaking of racial identities by looking at the ways in which the issue of race is debated in the context of historical and more recent return movements of African Americans to Ghana. The discourse surrounding the return, or homecoming as it is commonly phrased, is determined by notions of an African family and Black kinship. In official rhetoric, race is represented as an irrefutable reality, and a shared racial identity appears as the key to the mutual understanding and common cause of Africans and African Americans. Going beyond this rhetoric, the author shows how the categories of Blackness and Whiteness, while being constructed as mutually exclusive, are rather flexible and constantly re-negotiated in the course of the homecoming practice. She argues that the entangled movements of diasporic return speak in profound ways of the complexity and ambivalence that are at the heart of processes of racialisation.

Abstract:
Impoliteness has recently been of interest to scholars as a linguistic study in the field of pragmatics. It has emerged as the opposite orientation to politeness strategy, theory and studies. This paper explores how the impoliteness strategies mapped out by Jonathan Culpeper (1996) are employed in dramatic texts. It examines Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies designed to investigate face in the dramatic text. This paper tests the strategies through Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues (1985). This dramatic comedy is used for three reasons: (1) as a drama, it is a mirror of life and real-life speech events; (2) impoliteness strategies provide a resource to analyse impolite interactions between the characters in dialogic discourse; (3) dramatic texts provide a rich context to interpret and analyse verbal and non-verbal impoliteness strategies. Impoliteness strategies can cause disharmony and conflict between characters in a dramatic text. The interactions exchanged by the characters in Biloxi Blues are analysed according to Culpeper’s five impoliteness strategies: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to determine how face-threatening acts are incorporated into the play in line with Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies propounded in his article entitled Towards an Anatomy of Impoliteness (1996). The paper also examines how the characters react to face-threatening acts. In the twelve selected dramatic extracts, seventeen cases of positive impoliteness, ten cases of bald on record impoliteness, eight cases of sarcasm or mock politeness, and four cases of negative impoliteness have been observed. Moreover, it has also been observed that the characters use taboo words and abusive and strong language. The bald on record impolite acts are aggravated mainly by abuses, sexual insults and name-calling strategies. Racial slurs have also been identified as a part of positive impoliteness.

Abstract:
The global outbreak of COVID-19 has exposed varied ways that systemic inequality shapes people’s lives. This article pays particular attention to migrant populations. While mainstream media and political discourse tend to construct migration as a problem to be addressed or even the cause of social problems, the article contends that migration should be understood as an immanent part of capitalist uneven development, entwined with patriarchy and colonialism. The post-modern approach within media and communication scholarship on migration fails to challenge media’s constitutive role in patriarchal and racial capitalism which fundamentally shapes the process and consequences of migration. Drawing from a Marxist political economic perspective, I analyse the two cases of global transnational migration and internal migration in China and argue that media and communication studies should account for material disparity and class divisions among migrant groups and look for transformative force against unequal power structures.

Abstract:
The focus of this paper is an analysis of the Ambrose Philips (1674- 1749) neoclassical tragedy “The Distrest Mother” (1712). This play is an adaptation of Jean Racine’s (1639-1699) “Andromaque”(1667), which is, in turn, an adaptation of the Euripides’ ancient Greek tragedy “Andromache” (ca. 426 BC). Philips’ tragedy is an example of an early English adaptation from Racine. Philip took Racine’s play and moulded it to appeal to English taste. Therefore, this study shall analyse Philips’ play focusing on his innovations, mainly in comparison with the Racine version, but also with the ancient Greek myth.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Operators today are facing a profound and inevitable evolution of services and infrastructure. They are constantly pressured to accelerate the renewal of their offerings to meet new challenges and opportunities. It is in this context that the concept of "Cloud-native" network functions [1][2][3] is gaining increasing significance. Drawing inspiration from the IT world where "Cloud readiness" has already proven its worth, the idea of cloudifying network functions involves implementing scalable and self-healing functions while providing generic APIs accessible through their management and orchestration systems. However, the transition to a "Cloud-native" model is not limited to encapsulating network functions in virtual machines. It requires an adaptation, even a total redesign, of network functions. In this context, microservices architectures [4] become essential for the design of cloud-native 5G applications. Decomposing applications into independent services brings flexibility in terms of i) development, ii) deployment, and iii) scalability. Nevertheless, adopting this new architectural paradigm for virtualized network functions raises new questions about orchestration and automation operations. In particular, observability represents a cornerstone in monitoring 5G functions to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction. This functionality involves activities related to measuring, collecting, and analyzing telemetry data from both the operator's infrastructure and the applications running on it. Observability enables a deep understanding of network behavior and the anticipation of service quality degradation. Various observability approaches are proposed in the literature [5], allowing the analysis of the behavior of cloud-native IT applications and the implementation of necessary remediation actions. In this context, telemetry data provides precise information about the state of operator networks. However, the complexity of the operator's software-defined infrastructure and the volume of data [6] to be processed require the development of new techniques capable of detecting real-time risk situations and making the right decisions, for example, to avoid a violation of the Service Level Agreement (SLA). This is the framework in which the work of this thesis is situated

Abstract:
The Experience Feedback Committee (EFC) is a tool designed to involve medical teams in patient safety management, through root cause analysis of adverse events within the team. This program was created in 2005, and was implemented in the vast majority of French hospitals. Despite its wide implementation in thousands of French medical teams, the EFC still lacks scientific evaluation. To our knowledge, the EFC framework and the association between EFC and patient safety culture have never been assessed. In this context, our work aimed to determine whether patient safety culture, as measured by the Hospital Survey On Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS), differed regarding care provider involvement in EFC activities. Using the original data from a cross-sectional survey of 3,888 employees at a single university hospital in France, we analyzed the differences in HSOPS dimension scores according involvement in EFC activities. We also specified the metrological properties of the transcultural adaptation of the HSOPS into French (psychometrics properties, variability of scoring strategies and missing data imputation methods). Our findings suggest that EFC participation may improve patient safety culture, teamwork and non-blame oriented processes. Despite several limitations, our study contributes to a better understanding of EFC and its position amongst patient safety systems. This thesis advocates research developments centered on health care givers involvement in patient safety management

Paris 11, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA112257.

Full text
Abstract:
Aquaporins are water channel proteins which facilitate the diffusion of water across cell membranes. These proteins define a large multigenic family with 35 members in Arahidopsis thaliana. In a first part of this work, we addressed the relevance of aquaporin regulation by cytoplasmic pH at the root level, and especially in stress conditions. Cytoplasmic pH and root water transport were followed using NMR and pressure chamber techniques, respectively. Results indicate that a cytoplasmic acidification was associated to a strong, rapid and reversible diminution of the hydraulic conductivity of Arabidopsis excised root systems. A same behavior was observed, whether acidification was induced by means of weak acid diffusion, cell treatment with respiratory drugs, or anoxia. A second aspect of this work concerns the analysis of 6 aquaporin single knockout mutants in Arabidopsis. These mutants concern the PIP sub-family and were obtained after insertion of the T-DNA from Agrobacterium tumefaciens. No growth or developmental phenotype could be observed for any of the mutant plants in any of the conditions investigated. The expression pattern of the PIP2;2 et PIP2;3 genes in roots was determined by GUS reporter gene analyses. In two PIP2;2 mutant lines, the hydraulic conductivity of root cortex cells and whole root systems was diminished by 25 % and 14 %, respectively. Altogether, our results point to a predominant function for PIP2;2 in maintaining efficient water uptake in response to small osmotic gradients within the root. The identification of a function for a specific aquaporin isoform discards the idea of a total functional redundancy within the aquaporin family. In conclusion, our work brings novel insights into general and specific aspects of aquaporin function in plant roots

Abstract:

Enrichment without cause was recognized in france as an autonomous source of obligations in 1892 (case boudier). Its technical evolution in french law had a significant rise at the beginning of 20th century. After the last thesis from francois gore in 1949, no more essays were dedicated to the problem of unjust enrichment. At that period, though the other continental laws, mainly those of germanic inspiration, this mechanism, which does not allow somebody to get rich at the expense of others, sprang back to life. A fundamental distinction, based on the nature of things, made it possible to separate the benefits conferred with payment from benefits acquired "in any other manner". Besides its functional aspect, this distinction strives to attach different definitions to the constitutive elements of unjust enrichment, especially that of "cause". The attempt to intro, duce the distinction between benefits conferred with payment and benefits acquired "in any other manner" in french law, and at the same time to bring this institution up-to-date, is the essential purpose of our essay

Corneille and Racine are two emblematic authors of the 17th century classic tragedy. It features characters of high rank from the nobility and/or from royal blood. The aim of this thesis is an analysis and a reflection, through female and male characters on a corpus of four of their works, in the field of free will and consciousness. These characters represent the tragic hero, coming from the aristocracy and/or of royal blood. Our choice is for Corneille, Polyeucte and Le Cid and for Racine, it is Andromaque and Britannicus. The method is based mainly on Goldmann’s book Le dieu caché and mainly the concept of three spheres: of the divine, the world and mankind. The analysis is focused on the protagonists’ ability to use free will, to make use of the will and on the notion of consciousness. The complexity of this study has been in the complexity of the characters and in the coexistence of the three spheres of the divine, of the world and of mankind, in which there are various subtleties especially since the spheres interact between them.By the same ways, it is complex to measure the will, free will of the characters. Through the studied tragedies, we can see the central place of women, the difference between man and woman in the matter of their free will, the place of emotions in characters.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this first chapter of empirical findings, we provide an overview of trends and patterns in the residential segregation of households by race and ethnicity from 1990 to 2010 across metropolitan areas, micropolitan areas, and noncore counties. These three community types give our analysis wide geographic coverage across the United States. We examine segregation between White, Black, Asian, and Latino households across all areas over the two decades bracketed by the three decennial census years of 1990, 2000, and 2010. What distinguishes the analyses in this chapter from previous studies is that we apply new methods for measuring residential segregation which include correcting for index bias, using a measure that is better suited for distinguishing between different patterns of uneven distribution, and measuring residential segregation of households rather than persons. These adjustments allow us to expand the scope of our analysis to include more communities beyond the largest metropolitan areas while measuring residential segregation at the block-level, which is necessary for measuring segregation in less densely populated areas. While our findings at times reflect what past studies have found, it is more often the case that we reveal different levels and patterns of segregation, especially when focusing on White-Latino and White-Asian segregation where patterns of uneven distribution are more dispersed than previously understood. This first empirical chapter sets new benchmarks for residential segregation measurement and analysis in U.S. communities.

Abstract:
AbstractProcess mining is a research domain that enables businesses to analyse and improve their processes by extracting insights from event logs. While determining the root causes of, for example, a negative case outcome can provide valuable insights for business users, only limited research has been conducted to uncover true causal relations within the process mining field. Therefore, this paper proposes AITIA-PM, a novel technique to measure cause-effect relations in event logs based on causality theory. The AITIA-PM algorithm employs probabilistic temporal logic to formally yet flexibly define hypotheses and then automatically tests them for causal relations from data. We demonstrate this by applying AITIA-PM on a real-life dataset. The case study shows that, after a well-thought-out hypotheses definition and information extraction, the AITIA-PM algorithm can be applied on rich event logs, expanding the possibilities of meaningful root cause analysis in a process mining context.

AbstractIn this article, we analyze the relationship between mobility and the extractive economy of large copper mining in the Antofagasta region, located in the north of Chile. We will argue that extractivism generates various types of mobilities, which result in unequal processes of incorporation into the city, produced by the intersection of class, the origin of migration (internal and international), gender, ethnicity and race. On the basis of previous and ongoing research, we examined three types of mobilities to illustrate these inequalities: (i) internal migration, which played a decisive role in the settlement of the city and the region: (ii) circular internal mobility, under the figure of commuters: professionals, technicians and operators, mainly men, with different working conditions; and (iii) international migration from Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and other countries, attracted by job opportunities in the formal and informal sector, with good, medium or bad conditions depending on the ethno-national, “racial”, class and gender “marks”.

Abstract:
AbstractRepercussions of global crises can often be seen in the fact that many legal issues arise or become even more complex, while this is also true when speaking about the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Certainly, the analysis of the effects of such crisis is of great importance during the peak of the crisis, but also afterwards, in the context shaped by the (previous) crisis. In light of the mentioned, the widely present issue of discrimination in the world of work has become even more present during the crisis caused by the COVID-19, and discrimination based on race and ethnicity is no exception in this regard. From patients refusing to be treated by doctors because of their race to increased poverty rates, one may infer that impacts of the mentioned crisis have brought injustice and inequality based on race and ethnic background to the forefront of public eye all over the world, including the European Union. In that sense, the paper deals with the legal framework of importance, but also the existence and implications of racial and ethnic discrimination in practice, especially during and after the pandemic, i.e., analyzes this issue as the issue of “law and beyond”.

This chapter explores racism in university and its detrimental impact on students and staff of colour in the UK. The authors propose The Six Stages Framework as an effective assessment tool to assist individuals in their journey to understanding and challenging racism. With this, it is hoped that individuals can tackle cultures of racism perpetuated by implicit biases. A case study analysis explores the lived experience of racism within a UK university. This sheds light on the devastating impact of lack of diversity, cognitive dissonance, and racist cultures among university staff, systems, and students. This case study demonstrates the usefulness of The Six Stages Framework in framing the causes of racist behaviour and as a communication tool to explain why racial abuse may take place.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses Italian case law on racial harassment in the employment context but also beyond. NGOs, in particular, are using this new tool to fight against race discrimination. In a legal system which is not necessarily known for being at the forefront of anti-discrimination law, such a success may seem surprising. I argue that, at least in Italy, the prohibition on racial harassment has the advantage of overcoming pre-existing limitations of fighting racism via criminal law for certain cases. Moreover, the definition of harassment as derived from the EU anti-discrimination law directives avoids some of the interpretational difficulties related to direct and indirect discrimination. Thus, the case law analysed here could set an example beyond the national borders and also shed more light on a concept which has so far been flying under the radar in European anti-discrimination law.

Abstract:
This chapter offers an analytic model for understanding conflict and coalition on the terrain of race by discussing racialization and racial stratification. In this analytic model of first-, second-, and third-order racial analyses, the first-order binary model restates the duality of the primary racial opposition in U.S. history—black and white—and recognizes that many analyses of racial and ethnic conflict follow this basic majority–minority binary opposition. Meanwhile, second-order binary analysis stays within a group-to-group binary framework, but looks at the relationship between minority A and minority B. The chapter then shows how an understanding of racialization and racial stratification lends itself to third-order multigroup analysis. It concludes by discussing the limits of building coalitions in a purely oppositional mode, and explores the need for building common cause that extends beyond opposition to white capitalist patriarchy.

Abstract:
This chapter uses the 1791 trial of Pedro Dionisio Muñoz de Carballo to analyze the intersection of racism, racialization, and the artistic sphere as well as details of art production in Cuba during the late eighteenth century. Muñoz de Carballo, a free man of color and owner of a painting supply shop in Havana, was accused of selling lethal substances. This case took place during a period of great racial conflict. After the Haitian Revolution, fears of slave revolts increased. Black Cubans dominated the art sphere, and this caused racial anxiety. The case against Muñoz de Carballo was intended to ensure order and to exclude Blacks from Cuba’s art world. Art was marshaled as an effective tool to justify the political economy of slavery built upon white supremacy. Royal authorities used strategies such as the development of an aesthetic of good taste, the establishment of a fine arts academy, and the organization of artists into guilds. These measures ensured a rigid hierarchy that served as a glass ceiling for Blacks and mulatos. Linda Marie Rodriguez not only discusses art and race, but offers a clear picture of the material culture related to art in Cuba around 1800.

Extreme working conditions such as deep pits and rocky roads have put higher demand on structural strength and frame safety. To solve this problem, extreme working conditions are first studied to check the safety of the steel tube frame of Baja racing cars. Secondly, based on Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) to explore the frame's characteristics, analyze the frame's six-order mode, make the corresponding optimization, and solve the resonance problem caused by engine excitation and other factors. Finally, the natural frequency of the frame is measured to verify the effectiveness of the NVH characteristic optimization results, and it is found that the experimental results match the theoretical values. The theoretical analysis results are mainly based on ANSYS software's static and modal analysis. Through the above steps, a set of finite element analyses and structural optimization schemes of AWD full-time four-wheel drive Baja racing car frame is systematically proposed, which has reference significance for the subsequent frame design.</div></div>

Abstract:
In the field of aeroelasticity, flutter is a well known instability phenomenon. Flutter is a synchronized vibration which takes place in a flexible structure moving through a fluid medium. It occurs when two regular, rhythmic motions coincide in such a way that one feeds the other, drawing additional energy from surrounding flow. A classic case of wing flutter might combine wing bending with either wing twisting. This article explores the flutter phenomenon in water. An important difference from the flutter phenomenon in air is the fact that the flexible structure is evolving in heavy fluid; this implies in particular added mass effects and important fluid damping. Flutter appeared for the first time on racing yacht keels with composite fins, so in water, in 2004: • On the IMOCA 60 feet boat POUJOULAT-ARMORLUX of Bernard STAMM during the transatlantic race ‘The Transat’: he lost his keel and capsized. • On the IMOCA 60 feet boat SILL Rolland JOURDAIN: the keel and the boat were saved. Following these problems — particularly following the loss of the keel of Bernard STAMM sailboat, accident that could have dramatic consequences for the skipper — HDS company focused on the phenomenon. Flutter has occurred only for canting keels with composite fins on IMOCA 60 feet and Volvo 70 feet racing yacht. The main questions asked are “Why are composite keels susceptible to flutter, and is it possible to predict and prevent this behaviour?”, then “Can a fair indication of the flutter critical speed of the keel be given at low cost?”. This presentation will introduce the strategy of HDS faced to the problem and the analytical and numerical methods implemented to estimate the flutter critical speed. Our model is based on a truncated modal basis for the most energetic modes which are generally, for a bulb keel, the lateral bending predominant mode and the torsion predominant mode. One of our requirements was to make a simple model in order to integrate the calculation of the flutter critical speed in the first design loops of a composite or steel keel. This model has worked well for the two cases of flutter appeared on IMOCA sailboat keels. Besides, to verify the quality of the model and to complete our analysis of flutter phenomenon on racing yacht keels, a 3 dimensional multi-physics simulation has been developed using the software ADINA.

Abstract:
In recent years, NASCAR and the Indy Racing League have improved the safety of their racetracks through the installation of the Steel And Foam Energy Reduction barrier (SAFER). The new barrier consists of a high-strength, tubular steel skin that distributes the impact load to energy-absorbing foam cartridges in order to reduce the severity of the impact, extends the impact event, and provides the occupant of the race car additional protection. During installation of the SAFER barrier, the designers realized that certain race tracks were designed with the emergency track exit in the outside of the corner. Because the SAFER barrier needed to be installed in these corners, a gate mechanism had to be designed for the barrier that would provide access to the track while retaining the safety performance of the system. Full-scale crash testing of the first SAFER gate design showed that the gate did not posses sufficient capacity to handle the loads experienced during a worst-case impact scenario. Non-linear finite element analysis was then used to redesign the gate mechanism. The original gate design was simulated using LS-DYNA in order to validate the computational model. Modifications to increase the capacity of the gate mechanism were designed and analyzed until suitable results were obtained through simulation. Finally, the redesigned SAFER gate was successfully full-scale crash tested.

This paper deals with a dynamic analysis of a racing kart considering an elastic deformation of the kart frame. As the first step of this research, the FEM kart frame model was validated by means of static and dynamic tests. In the static test, the strain on the kart frame caused by a steering operation was measured by strain gauges, and compared to the simulation result. The dynamic response of the frame was evaluated by hammering test, and the result was compared to the modal analysis result. Next, a flexible multibody vehicle model was developed with this FEM frame model. In this process, model reduction based on the modal analysis is applied to reduce the degree of freedom of the flexible body. Some running tests with actual racing kart were carried out to evaluate the handling characteristic, and the comparison between simulation and experiment are discussed.

Abstract Even with the use of highly efficient machine, the manufacturing of rolling elements bearings still results in defective bearings. The defects could be on the race track or the rolling elements. A common problem with defective bearing is the generating waviness on the outer race track during the manufacturing process. The vibrations caused by rolling elements rolling over the waviness surface is transmitted to the passenger cabin and produced unwanted noise. In this paper an analytical study was first undertaken to evaluate the effect of waviness number, radial gap and shaft unbalance on the vibration spectrum. Experimental investigation was carried out to confirm the analytical study. The experimental results agreed very well with the numerical analysis.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to study the vibrational behavior, such as wheel bounce or chatter and rear suspension pitch, observed in racing motorcycles during severe acceleration and braking conditions. These vibrations may affect the performances and the safety of the vehicle. A multibody model of the system was implemented using a Newton-Euler approach and an associated linearized model was obtained in symbolic form. Accurate tire modeling was considered, and tire torsional stiffness effects were taken into account, since they may play an important role in transient dynamical vehicle behavior. Several numerical simulations were accomplished with different levels of longitudinal acceleration levels and different values of the tire force characteristic parameters. It was observed that unwanted vibrations may occur, being caused by a loss of stability of the system, and that this phenomenon may exhibit self-excited behavior. A sensitivity analysis was performed on the associated linearized model in order to identify the possible causes of the vehicle instability in severe acceleration and braking conditions.

Lopez-Barrios, Michel, and Paul Peters. Definitions and Methods for Analysis of Multiple Cause of Death: A Scoping Review. Spatial Determinants of Health Lab, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.22215/rrep/2023.sdhl.106.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: This review aims to identify and categorise demographic methods used in modelling multiple causes of death. The assumption that each death is caused by exactly one disease is debatable, as other possible diseases or causes may be associated with the main cause. Hence, the multiple causes of death approach is essential for understanding mortality. Therefore, through this study, we will carry out a Scoping Review of the existing literature on the topic of MCOD. Inclusion criteria: This review considers literature pertaining to methods for the analysis and utilization of multiple cause of death data. Papers that discuss the methods used as well as the strengths and limitations of multiple cause of death approach will be considered for this study. Methods: Preliminary searches were conducted in July 2022 and focussed on concepts of multiple cause of death mortality and multiple causes of death. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus and was conducted in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. There were no time constraints on the studies to be included in this review. Articles were initially screened by title and abstract and then reviewed by full text by three independent reviewers. Two reviewers extracted the data from the eligible articles. Results: A total of 769 papers were reviewed at the abstract and title level. Of these, 124 were screened for full-text eligibility. A total of 53 articles were included in the final analysis. Among the articles included, 31 were articles from the United States, 14 were from Europe and 8 were from other countries. The papers were categorized as methodological (33) papers, data assessment papers (19), papers discussing socioeconomic differences in mortality (13) and mixed method papers (11). Conclusions: There are many different types of methodologies and procedures used to analyse multiple cause of death statistics. All papers included in this study used descriptive methods (mostly frequency tables and cross-tabulations) to analyze multiple cause of death data, and almost half of them use visualizations to model the results. One of the most common limitations cited among the articles is the comparability of the statistics. Accurate data and analysis of vital statistics require resources, and many countries do not have the to report high-quality statistics. This could explain why most of the papers selected for this study focused on data from developed countries.

Martin, Ciaran. Five tests for risk-based approaches to national cybersecurity in resource-constrained environments. Digital Pathways at Oxford, April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-dp-wp_2022/05.

Abstract:
While we cannot currently accurately specify what good cybersecurity looks like, we can analyse what good risk-based approaches to national cybersecurity should aim at achieving. This is particularly important in low- and middle-income countries operating in resource-constrained environments in the early stages of economic development and digitalisation. This paper, therefore, discusses key considerations for risk-based cybersecurity by investigating the trade-offs that decision-makers should address so that scarce resources are best deployed to fend off threats that are more likely to happen and cause significant harm. The analysis is presented in the form of five tests that can be used to analyse the robustness of risk-based cybersecurity when resources are limited and to think about the potential paths that nations can take as they grapple with various economic and digitalisation challenges. As such, this framework does not present an exhaustive list of all the fundamental components of a cybersecurity strategy, but rather analyses the most important trade-offs and challenges that a cybersecurity strategy should address.

Abstract:
This report highlights the current state of educational inequities and national efforts to address them through policy, resources, tools, and technical assistance. Based on our review of over sixty equity-centered resources, we find that few toolkits are explicitly designed for K-12 schools and districts. We make a case for practical tools and resources, such as the EET™, to support education leaders in their equity work. Finally, based on our analysis of federal efforts to advance equity and a new administration that is prioritizing racial justice, we outline immediate action steps the Biden-Harris administration can take on this matter.

Norris, Adele. Thesis review: The storytellers: Identity narratives by New Zealand African youth – participatory visual methodological approach to situating identity, migration and representation by Makanaka Tuwe. Unitec ePress, October 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/thes.revw4318.

Abstract:
This fascinating and original work explores the experiences of third-culture children of African descent in New Zealand. The term ‘third-culture kid’ refers to an individual who grows up in a culture different from the culture of their parents. Experiences of youth of African descent is under-researched in New Zealand. The central research focus explores racialised emotions internalised by African youth that are largely attributed to a lack of positive media representation of African and/or black youth, coupled with daily experiences of micro-aggressions and structural racism. In this respect, the case-study analysis is reflective of careful, methodological and deliberative analysis, which offers powerful insights into the grass-roots strategies employed by African youth to resist negative stereotypes that problematise and marginalise them politically and economically.

Kranefeld, Robert. Beyond the grid : post-network energy provision in Rwanda. Goethe-Universität, Institut für Humangeographie, February 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21248/gups.53186.

Full text
Abstract:
In many parts of the world, the centralized grid provides energy to the population only to a limited extent. The electrification for sub-Saharan Africa countries is the lowest in the world, representing half of the world's population withoutelectricity. However, during the last years there has been an increased attention to rural areas in the Global South beyond the centralised grid, especially with respect to improved possibilities of solar power systems. The transition from one dominant form of energy provision to various alternatives includes different dimensions and depends on specific socio-spatial contexts. Energy systems are framed within systems of spatial practices, performed by a variety of involved actors, like consumers, local suppliers, international for-profit companies, international development donors as well as national and regional authorities. As such power systems arealways cause and effect of socio-technical change This study takes the example of Rwanda to analyse the marketization of decentralised energy systems. Based on empirical field work with energy entrepreneurs it combines Post-Colonial Theory with Science and Technology-Studies to theorise the role of energy to the social production of space beyond the grid.

Kistler, Harold Corby, Talma Katan, and Dani Zamir. Molecular Karyotypes of Pathogeic Strains of Fusarium oxysporum. United States Department of Agriculture, June 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1995.7604927.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Genetic diversity of pathogenic strains of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum was determied by analysis of electrophoretic karyotype, as well as by DNA variation detected by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLPs) and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs). The electrophoretic karyotypes for 130 isolates of the fungus pathogenic to tomato, melon, and banana were analyzed. Electrophoretic karyotype variation, reflected in differences in apparent chromosome number and genome size, was observed even among isolates from the same host and sub specific category. Sub specific categories studied were forma specialis, vegetative compatibility group (VCG) and race. Chromosome number and genome size variation was less for isolates within the same VCG than for the collection of isolates as a whole. RFLP and RAPD analysis were performed on 62 isolates of F. oxysporum from tomato and melon. Polygenetic trees were constructed from genetic diversity data. The results support the hypothesis that isolates belonging to the same VCG originate from a single ancestor compared to other isolates. The results do not support the hypothesis that all isolates belonging to the same forma specialis originate from a common ancestor. These conclusions have profound implication for breeding resistance to diseases caused by particular formae speciales of F. oxysporum.

Turner, Paul, Alessia Baseggio Conrado, and Jennifer Quint. Using NHS Data to Monitor Trends in the Occurrence of Severe, Food-Induced Allergic Reactions Work Package 1. Food Standards Agency, August 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.lvn457.

Full text
Abstract:
People with food allergies may experience food allergic reactions due to accidental exposure. These reactions are commonly categorised as non-severe, fatal food anaphylaxis and near-fatal food anaphylaxis. Non-severe allergic reactions to food are more common with an incidence of up to 1,000 times greater than fatal food-related anaphylaxis. However, obtaining accurate data relating to the circumstances under which these reactions occurred is challenging under the current diagnosis coding system used in the National Health Service (NHS). This project addressed two key questions: What are the trends in the occurrence of food hypersensitivity (FHS) reactions and their consequences in terms of healthcare encounters (both to hospital and primary care)? What are the circumstances surrounding severe, life-threatening reactions to food? Approach The researchers used existing NHS datasets (relating to Hospital Admissions, Accident & Emergency visits, Critical Care admissions and Primary care visits) to evaluate healthcare encounters due to food hypersensitivity over the study period. Patient pathways through the healthcare system were also assessed by linking these different datasets. Key Results Food-induced anaphylaxis represented 29.4% of reported anaphylaxis. admissions, and increased significantly from 1.23 to 4.02 admissions per 100,000 population per annum over the study period. However, despite an annual increase of 5.7% in hospitalisation for food-induced anaphylaxis between 1998 and 2018, the case fatality rate (proportion of hospital admissions associated with a fatal outcome) more than halved, from 0.7% in 1998 to less than 0.3% in 2018. 152 deaths were identified during the study period where the cause was very likely to have been food-induced anaphylaxis. At least 86 (46%) fatalities were triggered by peanut or tree nuts. Cows’ milk was reported to be the most common cause of fatal anaphylaxis in children aged under 16 years. Using data from England for the period 2008-2018, the prevalence of food allergy ranged from 4% in preschool-aged children (under 5 years), 1-2% in school-aged children and young people (5 to <20 years) and 0.9% in adults. Although the same methods were used throughout the study period, the statistics presented may be prone to limitations such as miscoding and incomplete datasets. Prescription of adrenaline auto-injector devices (AAI) are an important risk management intervention in people at risk of food-induced anaphylaxis. However, there is significant under-prescribing of AAI. Data showed that 40% of individuals with prior food-induced anaphylaxis were not prescribed AAI and at least 59% did not have AAI on repeat prescription. Most healthcare visits for food allergy occurred in general practice. Less than 3% of individuals with a diagnosis of food allergy attended Accident and Emergency during the study period, 2008-2018. Therefore, using hospital data in isolation to analyse patterns of health service utilisation with respect to FHS may not provide a comprehensive overview.

Vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of Myasthenia Gravis A protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.9.0129.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The patients should meet the internationally recognized diagnostic criteria for myasthenia gravis and be definitely diagnosed as myasthenia gravis, excluding MG patients caused by congenital, drug and other factors, as well as patients with serious primary diseases, autoimmune diseases or mental diseases. Patients are not restricted by race, region, gender, age, background, course of disease and other factors. We will focus on trials using vitamin D as an intervention at any dose and in any regimen (eg daily/weekly/monthly intake). The control group was routinely given western medicine, including cholinesterase inhibitors, glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, alone or in combination, or placebo. The intervention group was treated with vitamin D on the basis of western medicine treatment in the control group. The specific dosage form and dose were not limited, and the shortest course of treatment should be 4 weeks. Main outcome measures: (1) Quantitative score of myasthenia gravis (QMG); (2) Recurrence rate; (3) Effective. Secondary outcome measures: (1) The level of serum acetylcholine receptor antibody (AchRab); (2) The levels of inflammatory factors such as IL-6 and IL-10; (3) Clinical absolute score; (4) TCM syndrome score scale; (5) Quality of life score (QOL); (6) Incidence rate of adverse events. All randomized controlled trials (RCT) literatures from the establishment to September 2022 were retrieved and classified.
