A mechanical ball on beam system was stabilized to demonstrate the capabilities of control systems. This demonstration system is intended for use in control theory classes such as 6.011 Introduction to Communication, Control, and Signal Processing, 6.302 Feedback Systems, and 6.003 Signals and Systems. Control of this unstable system is achieved through classical control methods taught in 6.302. The compensators are implemented in analog circuitry. The system was successfully demonstrated in a 6.011 lecture (April 5, 2004). A lab kit system was designed for future 6.302 students.

Abstract:
The development of phased array antenna systems requires considerable resources and time. Due to this constraint, the Naval Air Command (NAVAIR) needs a phased array that can be physically reconfigured to meet the demands of multiple missions without added development time or cost. This work develops and demonstrates a solution to this problem by implementing an adaptive calibration approach to the development of electronically steerable antennas (ESAs). In contrast to previous analog adaptive beamformer systems, this system allows for an arbitrary antenna configuration with a variable number of antenna elements and locations. A simulation model of arbitrary phased array configurations was developed to test the beamformer calibration algorithm and was used to show practical tile locations. To demonstrate this approach, four 4x4 ULA phased array antenna tiles were built and tested together in various configurations to show the viability of developing a physically reconfigurable phased array system.

Abstract:
The interlock Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system in the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) is responsible for monitoring the particle beam position at the point of thebeam dump kicker magnets and is part of the machine protection system. Thecurrent interlock BPM system has some limitations and because of this, an upgradeproject has been initiated. This master thesis describes the development of theanalog front end electronics of this system, consisting mainly of two parts: A delayline based microwave filter and a high isolation and highly balanced power combinercircuit.The filter has been validated with real LHC beam measurements and is found towork as expected. More work however needs to be done to ensure the effect that thefilter itself has on the beam measurements as the filter could introduce some ringingeffects on the signal. The highly balanced high isolation power combiner has beentested through lab measurements and also shows promising results but long-termtests need to be conducted to ensure the reliability of the component as it will needto endure very high signal levels over long periods of time.

Detta examensarbetebeskriver utvecklingen av den elektronik som kommer att användas i systemetsanaloga signalkedja som består i huvudsak av ett filter samt en balanserad effektdelareför radiofrekvenser.Filtret har utvärderats genom verkliga mätningar av partikelstrålen och har konstateratsfungera som väntat. Mer arbete krävs dock för att bestämma påverkansom filtret självt har på positionsmätningarna då det introducerar en viss ringandeeffekt på signalerna. Den balanserade effektdelaren har testats i lab och visar ocksåpå lovande resultat men kräver tester över längre tid då denna komponent kommeratt behöva utstå höga signalnivåer under långa tidsperioder.

Abstract:
The experimental studies performed on the behaviour of very thick concrete beams subjected to static loads have revealed that the shear mechanisms play an important role in the overall response and failure behaviour. The aim of this thesis is to recommend suitable design methods for thick concrete beams subjected to off-centre static concentrated load according Eurocode 2 by using non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA). To achieve this task, Abaqus/Explicit has been used by employing constitutive material models to capture the material non-linearity and stiffness degradation of concrete. Concrete damaged plasticity model and perfect plasticity model has been used for concrete and steel respectively. Three dilation angles (30º, 38º and 45º) and fracture energy from FIB 1990 (76 N/m) and FIB 2010 (142 N/m) has been used to investigate their influence on the finite element model. The dilation angle of 38º and FIB 2010 fracture energy was adopted as the suitable choice that reasonably matched with the experimental results. In verifying and calibrating the finite element model, the experimental results of the thick reinforced concrete beam conducted by the American Concrete Institute have been used. Three design approaches in the ultimate and serviceability limit state according to Eurocode 2 recommendations have been used namely; the beam method, strut and tie method and shell element method. Using the reinforcement detailing of the hand calculations of beam method and strut and tie method and linear finite element analysis of shell element method, non-linear finite element models have been pre-processed and analysed in Abaqus/Explicit. During the post-processing, the results have been interpreted and compared between the three design methods. The results under consideration are hand-calculated load at 0.3 mm crack width, FE-load at 0.3 mm crack width, amount of reinforcement and FE-failure load. The comparison of the results between the three design approaches (beam method, strut and tie method and shell element method) indicates that strut and tie method is better design approach, because it is relatively economic with regards to the quantity of reinforcement bars, has the higher load capacity and has a higher load at crack width of 0.3 mm crack width.
De experimentella studier som utförts på tjocka betongbalkar som utsätts för statisk last har visat att skjuvning spelar en viktig roll i brottmekanismen. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att rekommendera lämpliga dimensioneringsmetoder för tjock betongbalkar utsatt for statisk koncentrerad last enligt Eurokod 2 med hjälp av ickelinjära finita element metod. Abaqus/Explicit användes genom att utnyttja konstitutiva materialmodeller för att fånga materialens icke-linjäritet och minskad styvhet. Tre dilatationsvinklar (30°, 38° och 45°) och två brottenergi från FIB 1990 (76 N/m) och FIB 2010 (142 N/m) tillämpas för att kontrollera deras inverkan på FE-modellerna. Dilatationsvinkel med 38° och FIB 2010 med högre brottenergi valdes i de icke-linjära finita elementanalyserna. Kontroll av FE-modellerna är baserad på ”American Concret Institutes” experimentella resultat på de tjocka betongbalkarna. Handberäkningar av tjocka betongbalkar har utförts i brott- och bruksgränstillstånd med tre dimensioneringsmetoder i Eurokod 2 nämligen balk metoden, fackverksmetoden och linjära-FE skalelementmetoden. Jämförelse har gjorts för de olika dimensioneringsmetoderna, genom att använda de armeringsdetaljer av handberäkningar i de verifierade och kalibrerade icke linjära FE-modellerna i Abaqus/Explicit. Resultaten i fråga är last för 0.3 mm handberäknad sprikvidd, FE-last för 0.3 mm sprikvidd, armeringsmängd och FE-brottlast. Jämförelse av resultaten mellan de tre dimensioneringsmetoder (balkmetod, fackverksmetod och skalelementmetod) visar att fackverksmetod är bättre design metod, eftersom det är relativt ekonomiskt med avseende på armeringsmängd, har högre lastkapacitet och last på 0.3 mm sprickvidd.

Abstract:
Reinforced concrete deep beams are known for applications in tall buildings, foundations and offshore structures. Deep beams are structural elements with length and height within the same magnitude and have significantly smaller thickness compared to a conventional concrete beam. Deep beams in bending have non-linear strain distribution compared to conventional beams where Bernoulli’s hypothesis is valid. Crack formation is a common problem in reinforced concrete structures, which reduce the durability of the structure. Once the concrete cracks the tension reinforcement carry the tensile forces instead of the concrete. Therefore, the design of tension reinforcement is important since the serviceability should be retained even after the structure cracks. The crack widths can be limited by using proper reinforcement and one alternative is to combine tensile reinforcement with crack reinforcement.  The function of the reinforcement is to distribute the cracks over the cross section which leads to that many smaller cracks occur instead of fewer, wider cracks. Small cracks are seen as less of a problem compared to large cracks since larger cracks reduce the durability significantly. For deep beams, there is at the present no well-substantiated analysis model for how crack widths shall be calculated when having reinforcement in multiple layers with different diameters. The use of crack reinforcement in the outer bottom layer has by tradition been considered as a cost efficient way to achieve small crack widths. In this work the crack width in deep beams have been analysed using the finite element program Atena 2D. The numerical results have been verified by analytical calculations based on Eurocode 2. The aim is to achieve reduced crack widths  by analysing the combination of crack- and tensile reinforcement compared to the case with tensile reinforcement only. Tensile reinforcement has a larger diameter, for example ø25 mm, and crack reinforcement has smaller diameters, often between ø10 and ø16 mm. The result from the calculations with Atena showed that there was an improvement regarding the reduction of crack widths when using crack reinforcement in combination with tensile reinforcement compared to using tensile reinforcement only. However, this improvement decreased by using reinforcement in multiple layers since a tensile reinforcement bar 1ø25 mm needed to be replaced by approximately six crack reinforcement bars 6ø10 mm in order to achieve the same total reinforcement area. The main disadvantage was that more space was required to place all reinforcement bars in the cross section, which reduced the lever arm. The reduction of the lever arm resulted in a reduced capacity for the reinforcement and the cracks might unintentionally become wider than expected. Furthermore, significant reduction of both crack widths and reinforcement stresses were obtained when the total area for a case with 7ø25 mm was increased to 9ø25 mm. The increased total area of only tensile reinforcement ø25 mm reduced the crack width more compared to using a combination of crack- and tensile reinforcement, which could simplify the construction work at building sites and minimize time consumption.
Armerade höga betongbalkar är kända för tillämpningar i höga byggnader, grundsulor och offshore konstruktioner. Höga balkar är konstruktionselement med längd och höjd i samma storleksordning och har betydligt mindre tjocklek jämfört med en konventionell betongbalk. Höga balkar i böjning har en icke-linjär töjningsfördelning jämfört med konventionella balkar där Bernoullis hypotes gäller. Sprickbildning är ett vanligt problem i armerade betongkonstruktioner, vilket minskar beständigheten hos konstruktionen. När betongbalken spricker kommer armeringen att ta upp dragkraften istället för betongen därför är utformningen av böjarmering viktig eftersom bruksgränstillståndet bör behållas även efter att konstruktionen spricker. Sprickvidderna kan begränsas genom att använda korrekt armering och ett alternativ är att kombinera kraftarmering med sprickarmering. Armeringens funktion är att sprida ut sprickorna över tvärsnittet vilket leder till att många små sprickor uppkommer i stället för färre, bredare sprickor. Små sprickor ses som ett mindre problem jämfört med stora sprickor eftersom större sprickor minskar beständigheten avsevärt. För höga balkar finns det för närvarande ingen välunderbyggd analysmodell för hur sprickvidder ska beräknas när de har armering i flera lager och med olika diametrar. Användningen av sprickarmering har traditionellt ansetts vara ett kostnadseffektivt sätt att uppnå små sprickvidder. I detta arbete har sprickvidden i höga balkar analyserats med hjälp av finita elementprogrammet Atena 2D. De numeriska resultaten har verifierats med analytiska beräkningar baserade på Eurokod 2. Syftet är att uppnå reducerade sprickvidder genom att analysera kombinationen av sprick- och kraftarmering jämfört med fallet med endast kraftarmering. Kraftarmeringen har en större diameter, till exempel ø25 mm och sprickarmering har mindre diametrar, ofta mellan ø10 och ø16 mm. Resultaten från beräkningarna i Atena visade att sprickvidderna minskade vid användning av sprickarmering i kombination med kraftarmering jämfört med användning av endast kraftarmering. Denna förbättring minskade emellertid i och med användning av armering i flera lager. En kraftarmeringsstång 1ø25 mm behöver ersättas med ungefär sex sprickarmeringsstänger, 6ø10 mm, för att uppnå samma totala armeringsarea. Den största nackdelen var att det krävdes mer utrymme för att placera alla sprickarmeringsstänger i tvärsnittet, vilket minskade hävarmen. Minskningen av hävarmen medförde en reducerad kapacitet i armeringen och sprickorna blev bredare än förväntat. Vidare erhölls signifikant reduktion av både sprickvidder och armeringsspänningar när den totala arean för ett fall med 7ø25 mm ökades till 9ø25 mm. Den ökade totalarean av endast kraftarmeringsstänger ø25 mm minskade sprickvidden mer jämfört med att använda en kombination av sprick- och kraftarmering vilket skulle kunna förenkla byggarbetet på byggarbetsplatser och minimera tidsförbrukningen.

Abstract:
The memristor is a two-terminal semiconductor device that is able to mimic the conductance response of synapses and can be utilized in next-generation computing platforms that will compute similarly to the mammalian brain. The initial memristor implementation is operated by the digital formation and dissolution of a highly conductive filament. However, an analog memristor is necessary to mimic analog synapses in the mammalian brain. To understand the mechanisms of operation and impact of different device designs, analog memristors were fabricated, modeled, and characterized. To realize analog memristors, lithiated transition metal oxides were grown by molecular beam epitaxy, RF sputtering, and liquid phase electro-epitaxy. Analog memristors were modeled using a finite element model simulation and characterized with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, impedance spectroscopy, and other electrical methods. It was shown that lithium movement facilitates analog memristance and nanoscopic ionic-electronic memristors with ion-soluble electrodes can be key enabling devices for brain-inspired computing.

Envolve uma variedade de circuitos analógicos e digitais como: um módulo de aquisição de dados e controle baseado em uma UCP Z-80, contendo algumas interfaces digitais e analógicas multiplexadas, e comunicando-se com um microcomputador através de uma interface serial. Envolve ainda o desenvolvimento de controladores de temperatura analógicos tipo P.I.D., atuação por motores de passo e circuitos de condicionamento de sinal.
In this work is presented the development of electronic instrumentation for automation and control of a Molecular Beam Epitaxy semiconductor growth system. A variety of analog and digital instrumentation circuits have been designed and implemented, including a data acquisition and control system based on a Z-80 CPU, which controls some multiplexed digital and analog interfaces and talks to a microcomputer using serial communication. Other circuits have been also developed, including analog temperature controllers, stepper motor actuators and circuits for signal conditioning.

Detta examensarbete vid Luleå tekniska universitet har utförts i samarbete med avdelningen för byggkonstruktionvid det nordiska konsultföretaget Norconsult AB. Arbetet bygger på en önskan från Norconsultatt ta fram en beräkningsmodell för höga balkar i överensstämmelse med Eurokod 2 motsvarande densom finns i BBK 04. Eurokod 2 har endast en knapphändig beskrivning av hur höga balkar bör dimensioneras.Detta skapar frustration och osäkerhet hos konstruktörer. Den tidigare svenska betongnormen,BBK 04, innehöll en tydlig och enkel mer empirisk beräkningsmetod för höga balkar, vilket gav en störresäkerhet vid projekteringen. Arbetet begränsas till att studera enkelt upplagda och kontinuerliga balkar i två spann belastade med enpunktlast mitt i vartdera spannet. Geometrin är densamma för samtliga balkar och armeringsmängdenvarieras tillsammans med brottlasten. Initialt utfördes en litteraturstudie för att erhålla en fördjupad kunskap om området samt att bygga uppen förståelse för teorin för höga balkar och den fackverksmodell som används i Eurokod 2. Vidare presenterasen försöksrapport, Rogowsky et al. (1983), som redovisar en experimentell laboratoriestudie därhöga balkar belastas till brott. Resultaten som presenteras är brottlast, töjning i betong och armering,sprickmönster samt nedböjning. Fyra enkelt upplagda och fyra kontinuerliga balkar väljs ut för vidarejämförelse och analys. Härvid används det ickelinjära beräkningsprogrammet ATENA 2D, där studeradebalkar modelleras. Handberäkningar enligt EK2 och BBK 04 utförs för respektive balk och tillhörandearmeringsmängd beräknas. En maximal brottlast itereras fram för respektive balk och beräkningsmetod (EK2 eller BBK 04). Armeringsmängdensom ges av denna beräkning modelleras i ATENA 2D och motsvarande balk analyseras.Resultaten jämförs sedan. Erhållna resultat sammanställs och jämförs med varandra: Rogowsky et al. (1983), ATENA 2D och handberäkningarnaenligt både Eurokod 2 och BBK 04. Jämförelsen visar att det finns få likheter mellan EK2och BKK 04, med avseende på erhållen armeringsmängd. BBK kräver generellt större armeringsmängdän Eurokod 2. Studien visar att beräkningarna med ATENA 2D stämmer väl överens med laboratorieförsöken.Resultaten visar även att antaganden enligt Eurokod 2 stämmer väl överens med hur de studeradebalkarna beter sig i verkligheten. En enkel beräkningsmodell som motsvarar BBKs konservativa modell är inte möjlig att ta fram inom deramar och begränsningar som finns för detta examensarbete. Istället sammanställs en modell i form av enpunktlista som förtydligar, sammanfattar och exemplifierar den mer verklighetstrogna beräkningsgångenför höga balkar enligt Eurokod 2.

Abstract:
Earthquake has always been a hazard for civil structures and keeping the structures integrity during and after an earthquake is of vital importance. This phenomenon’s impact is sudden and there is little or no warning to make the preparations for this natural disaster. Much damage has been done on structures which have led to major collapses and loss of many lives. Civil structures such as nuclear power plants are designed to withstand earthquakes and in the event of a major seismic event, to shut down safely. The aim of this thesis is to present the seismic design procedures for concrete structures, in basic and detailed design, according to Eurocode 8. Also to describe and understand the difference between Eurocode 8 and the DNB in seismic analysis of nuclear power plants. To evaluate the use of DNB instead of Eurocode 8 with Swedish seismic conditions is also another aim in this thesis.  Loads and actions which apply on a structure in a seismic design and corresponding load combinations are presented for Eurocode 8 and the DNB. An example is also given to clarify the design of primary seismic beams and columns with high ductility class (DCH). A case study of a nuclear structure from a test project named SMART2013 has been made by analyzing and comparing the results from Eurocode 8 and the DNB with a finite element model in FEM-Design software. Natural frequencies of the model are compared with the tested model in SMART2013-project to evaluate the finite element modeling. The model is seismically analyzed with load combinations from Eurocode 8 and the DNB with Swedish elastic ground response spectrum with the probability of 10-5. Results obtained from the primary seismic beams and columns are compared and analyzed.  Being on the safe and conservative side of the design values is always preferred in seismic analysis of a vital and sensitive structure such as nuclear power plants. The results from this thesis shows that, purely structural, combination of Swedish elastic ground response spectrum with the Eurocode 8 load combination will give more conservative values than the DNB.
I stora delar av världen har jordbävningar alltid varit ett hot för byggnaders integritet. Karaktären av en jordbävning är plötslig och föranleds av små eller inga varningar. Om jordbävningen medför att byggnader kollapsar sker ofta stora förluster av människoliv direkt eller indirekt. Kärnkraftsverk är anläggningar som dimensioneras för att klara jordbävningar och ska kunna gå till säker avställning vid en sådan händelse. Syftet med föreliggande rapport är att presentera hur betongkonstruktioner dimensioneras för jordbävning enligt Eurokod 8. Rapporten redogör även för skillnader mellan att dimensionera enligt Eurokod 8 och DNB (Dimensionering av nukleära byggnadskonstruktioner) samt hur det slår att använda Eurokod med svenska seismiska förhållanden. Laster och lastkombinationer som används vid jordbävningsdimensionering av betongbyggnader är presenterad enligt både Eurokod och DNB. Ett exempel presenteras för att visa hur primära balkar och pelare med hög duktilitetsklass (DCH) dimensioneras för seismisk påverkan. En fallstudie av en nukleär byggnad från ett internationellt projekt, SMART2013, har använts för att analysera och utvärdera resultaten från Eurokod och DNB. Byggnaden har analyserats med finita element med programvaran FEM Design. Modellens riktighet har verifierats genom att jämföra bland annat egenfrekvenser med de från officiella rapporter från SMART2013. Byggnaden är analyserad för seismisk last enligt svenska förhållanden med markresponsspektra 10-5, och primära balkar och pelare har analyserats och utvärderats enligt både Eurokod och DNB.

Ce travail porte ainsi particulièrement sur le développement d’une méthodologie facilitant l’analyse des cartographies laser. Cette méthodologie est basée sur la comparaison de résultats de simulations électriques de l’interaction faisceau laser-CI avec des résultats expérimentaux (cartographies laser). L’influence des phénomènes thermique et photoélectrique sur les CI (niveau transistor) a été modélisée et simulée. This thesis deals with Soft failure localization in the analog and mixed mode Integrated Circuits (ICs) by means of Dynamic Laser Stimulation techniques (DLS). The results obtained using these techniques are very complex to analyze in the case of analog and mixed ICs. In this work we develop a methodology which facilitates the analysis of the laser mapping. This methodology consists on combining the experimental results (laser mapping) with the electrical simulations of laser stimulation impact on the device. The influence of photoelectric and thermal phenomena on the IC (transistor level) has been modeled and simulated. The methodology has been validated primarily on test structures before being used on complex Freescale ICs existing in commerce

Glas und Beton sind sich in wesentlichen Materialeigenschaften ähnlich: Beide zeigen gegenüber einer hohen Druckfestigkeit eine vergleichsweise geringe Zugfestigkeit und versagen spröde. Diese Analogie führte zur Entwicklung bewehrter Glasträger, die sich durch eine aufgeklebte Stahllasche an ihrer Biegezugkante auszeichnen. Dadurch wurden die Übertragung von Zugkräften auch im Rissfall möglich, sodass ein duktiles Bauteilverhalten erreicht und der im Konstruktiven Glasbau notwendige Nachweis der Resttragfähigkeit erfüllt wird. Glasträger mit verbundlos vorgespannter Bewehrung – Spannglasträger – stellen die Fortführung dieses Analogiegedankens dar. Neben einer gezielten Steigerung der Erstrisslast, können die Träger planmäßig überhöht werden. Damit wird einer bisher üblichen Überdimensionierung mit der Anordnung nicht ausgenutzter „Opferscheiben“ entgegen gewirkt und sichere sowie materialeffiziente Konstruktionen mit maximaler Transparenz ermöglicht. Diese Konstruktionsweise wurde bislang ausschließlich für einzelne Sondierungsuntersuchungen in breiter Variantenvielfalt genutzt. Eine Systematik und einheitliche Bezeichnungsweise ist nicht vorhanden. Darüber hinaus beschränken sich verfügbare Ergebnisse auf die Beschreibung der Tragfähigkeit, ohne die Resttragfähigkeit explizit zu belegen oder die Dauerhaftigkeit nachzuweisen. Mit dieser Arbeit wurde anhand einer Analogiebetrachtung zum Eurocode 2 eine Bezeichnungsweise für bewehrte und vorgespannte Glasträger entwickelt und für vorhandene Konstruktionen erfolgreich angewendet. Darin zeigt sich, dass der Stand der Technik auf diese Weise charakterisierbar ist. Zusätzlich wird die These aufgestellt, dass sich das Tragverhalten von Spannglasträgern wie im Stahlbeton- und Spannbetonbau beschreiben und die auftretenden Spannkraftverluste analog berechnen lassen. Diese These wird mithilfe experimenteller Studien als Kern dieser Arbeit untersucht und durch eine ergänzende numerische Modellierung bestätigt. Zunächst wird das Tragverhalten im Kurzzeit-Biegeversuch an 15 Prüfkörpern unter variierten Bewehrungsgraden und Vorspannkräften untersucht. Dabei zeigen sich gesteigerte Erstrisslasten sowie ein sicheres Verhalten im Anschluss an die Belastung. Durch die Vorspannung wird das Tragverhalten gezielt beeinflusst. Zusätzlich erbringt eine zerstörungsfreie Untersuchungsreihe an 28 Prüfkörpern unter konstanter Gebrauchslast über 1000 Stunden erstmals eine Beschreibung der auftretenden Spannkraftverluste. Diese sind maßgeblich von der horizontalen Durchbiegung sowie der daraus resultierenden Belastung der Zwischenschicht im Verbund-Sicherheitsglas abhängig. Aus der Größenordnung der Verluste lässt sich schlussfolgern, dass eine Begrenzung dieses Verformungsanteils sowie eine konstruktive Entlastung der Zwischenschicht notwendig sind. Zudem wird die Änderung der Vorspannkraft unter einer Temperaturlast beschrieben. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass dieser Lastfall mittels der linearen Balkentheorie beschreibbar und der damit assoziierte Spannkraftverlust berechenbar ist. Die Resttragfähigkeit von 24 Spannglasträgern wird mithilfe eines eigens entwickelten Prüfverfahrens bestätigt. Während die Bewehrung einerseits eine Überbrückung von Rissflanken ermöglicht, verursacht die Vorspannkraft andererseits im teilzerstörten Tragsystem bisweilen ein frühzeitiges Versagen. Daher wird empfohlen, die baukonstruktive Detailentwicklung zu intensivieren, um einen größeren Sicherheitsvorteil aus der Konstruktionsweise zu generieren. Die Arbeit beinhaltet erstmals eine systematische Datensammlung zum Tragverhalten von Spannglasträgern. Es zeigt sich, dass auf eine Anordnung von „Opferscheiben“ zugunsten einer steigenden Materialeffizienz nicht nur verzichtet werden kann, sondern im Sinne eines effektiven Tragverhaltens verzichtet werden muss. Mit der vorgeschlagenen Bezeichnungsweise, den abgeleiteten konstruktiven Maßnahmen sowie den gezeigten Untersuchungsmethoden besteht nunmehr die Möglichkeit, sichere und dauerhafte Spannglasträger zu entwerfen und deren Trageffizienz zu belegen
Glass and concrete share essential material characteristics: Their compressive strength exceeds their tensile strength considerably and both of them fail in a brittle manner. This analogy led to the development of reinforced glass beams, which are improved by means of adhesively bonded steel sections in the tensile zone. This improvement allowed for a direct transfer of tensile loads in a post-breakage state and resulted in a ductile structural element, which met the special demand of structural glass for a sufficient residual loadbearing capacity. Glass beams with unbonded, post-tensioned reinforcement – Spannglass Beams – carry this analogy concept on. The members will comprise an increased initial fracture strength and may be uplifted intentionally. This development has rendered the need for over-dimensioning by removing unnecessary sacrificial layers, which will result in a material efficient structure and will maximise transparency. Solely single exploratory investigations have used this idea in a wide variety of options so far. There is neither a uniform classification nor a consistent nomenclature. Furthermore, available results are limited to the concise description of the short-term load-bearing properties without proving the residual load-bearing capacity explicitly and confirming longterm durability. This thesis describes the development and the application of a nomenclature for reinforced and pre-compressed glass beams in an analogy study according to Eurocode 2. The state of technology can be characterised in this manner. Additionally, the research describes the load-bearing behaviour as well as the calculation of the loss of pre-stress of Spannglass Beams by analogy with concrete structures. As the key section of this thesis, this statement is examined by means of comprehensive experimental studies and completed by a numerical calculation. Primarily, the load-bearing behaviour of 15 specimens in short-term bending tests and a variety of reinforcement ratios and pre-stress levels were determined. The results show an increase of initial fracture strength as well as safe behaviour after failure. The pre-stress changes the load-bearing performance significantly. Furthermore, a non-destructive study including a constant loading for 1000 h describes the loss of pre-stress in 28 specimens for the first time. The horizontal deflection and the thus resulting shear stresses of the interlayer material of a laminated glass section are the critical parameters. From the magnitude of losses it may be concluded that the deflections need to be limited and the interlayer foils need to be relieved from stress. Moreover, the structural response during a change in temperature is in good agreement with the results obtained from linear beam theory. This allows for an estimation of the associated losses. Finally, a specifically developed test approach confirms the residual load-bearing capacity of 24 specimens. The reinforcement shows the ability to bridge cracks in the glass. However, it should be noted that pre-stress occasionally causes an early failure of the partially broken Spannglass cross-section. Therefore, intensifying the development of structural details in order to generate an increased advantage concerning safety is recommended. This contribution contains a systematic acquisition of analytical, experimental and numerical data regarding the loadbearing characteristics of Spannglass Beams for the first time. The use of a sacrificial layers is not necessary. Even more, to reach the most effective load-bearing behaviour, it is necessary to abandon them completely. Implementing the developed nomenclature, realising the recommended structural provisions and using the proposed methods, it is now possible to compose safe and durable Spannglass Beams as well as prove their structural efficiency

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the effect of microstructural variation on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of ductile iron. To research and determine these effects, two grades of ductile iron, (i) GJS-500-7 and (ii) high silicon GJS-500-14, were cast in a geometry containing several plates with different section thicknesses in order to produce microstructural variation. Microstructural investigations as well as tensile and hardness tests were performed on the casting plates. The results revealed higher ferrite fraction, graphite particle count, and yield strength in the high silicon GJS-500-14 grade compared to the GJS-500-7 grade. To study the relationship between the microstructural variation and tensile behavior on macroscale, tensile stress-strain response was characterized using the Ludwigson equation. The obtained tensile properties were modeled, based on the microstructural characteristics, using multiple linear regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The models showed that silicon content, graphite particle count, ferrite fraction, and fraction of porosity are the major contributing factors that influence tensile behavior. The models were entered into a casting process simulation software, and the simulated microstructure and tensile properties were validated using the experimental data. This enabled the opportunity to predict tensile properties of cast components with similar microstructural characteristics. To investigate deformation behavior on micro-scale, a method was developed to quantitatively measure strain in the microstructure, utilizing the digital image correlation (DIC) technique together with in-situ tensile testing. In this method, a pit-etching procedure was developed to generate a random speckle pattern, enabling DIC strain measurement to be conducted in the matrix and the area between the graphite particles. The method was validated by benchmarking the measured yield strength with the material’s standard yield strength. The microstructural deformation behavior under tensile loading was characterized. During elastic deformation, strain mapping revealed a heterogeneous strain distribution in the microstructure, as well as shear bands that formed between graphite particles. The crack was initiated at the stress ranges in which a kink occurred in the tensile curve, indicating the dissipation of energy during both plastic deformation and crack initiation. A large amount of strain localization was measured at the onset of the micro-cracks on the strain maps. The micro-cracks were initiated at local strain levels higher than 2%, suggesting a threshold level of strain required for micro-crack initiation. A continuum Finite Element (FE) model containing a physical length scale was developed to predict strain on the microstructure of ductile iron. The material parameters for this model were calculated by optimization, utilizing the Ramberg-Osgood equation. The predicted strain maps were compared to the strain maps measured by DIC, both qualitatively and quantitatively. To a large extent, the strain maps were in agreement, resulting in the validation of the model on micro-scale. In order to perform a micro-scale characterization of dynamic deformation behavior, local strain distribution on the microstructure was studied by performing in-situ cyclic tests using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A novel method, based on the focused ion beam (FIB) milling, was developed to generate a speckle pattern on the microstructure of the ferritic ductile iron (GJS-500-14 grade) to enable quantitative DIC strain measurement to be performed. The results showed that the maximum strain concentration occurred in the vicinity of the micro-cracks, particularly ahead of the micro-crack tip.
Denna avhandling fokuserar på effekten av variationer i mikrostrukturen på mekaniska egenskaper och deformationsbeteende hos segjärn. För att undersöka dessa effekter, två olika sorter av segjärn, (i) GJS-500-7 och (ii) högkisellegerad GJS-500-14, gjutits till plattor av olika tjocklekar för att generera mikrostrukturvariationen. Mikrostrukturundersökning, samt drag- och hårdhetsprov gjordes på de gjutna plattorna. Resultaten visade att en högre ferritfraktion, grafitpartikelantal och sträckgräns i den högkisellegerade GJS-500-14-sorten jämfört med GJS-500-7. För att studera förhållandet mellan mikrostrukturell variation och spännings-töjningsbeteendet på makroskala, modellerades detta med hjälp av Ludwigson-ekvationen. De erhållna spännings-töjningsegenskaperna modellerades baserat på mikrostrukturell karaktäristika genom multipel linjärregression och variansanalys (ANOVA). Modellerna visade att kiselhalt, grafitpartikelantal, ferritfraktion och porfraktion var de viktigaste bidragande faktorerna. Modellerna implementerades i ett simuleringsprogram för gjutningsprocessen. Resultatet från simuleringen validerades med hjälp av experimentella data som inte ingick i underlaget för regressionsanalysen. Detta möjliggjorde att prediktera spännings-töjningsbeteendet och dess variation hos gjutna segjärns komponenter med liknande sammansättning och gjutna tjocklekar som användes i denna studie. För att kunna undersöka deformationsbeteendet på mikroskala utvecklades en metod för kvantitativ mätning av töjning i mikrostrukturen, genom DIC-tekniken (digital image correlation) tillsammans med in-situ dragprovning. I denna metod utvecklades en grop-etsningsprocess för att generera ett slumpvis prickmönster, vilket möjliggjorde DIC-töjningsmätning i matrisen och i området mellan grafitpartiklarna med tillräcklig upplösning. Metoden validerades genom benchmarking av den uppmätta sträckgränsen mot materialets makroskopiska sträckgräns mätt med konventionell dragprovning. Det mikrostrukturella deformationsbeteendet under dragbelastning karakteriserades. Under elastisk deformation avslöjade töjningsmönstret en heterogen töjningsfördelning i mikrostrukturen, och bildandet av skjuvband mellan grafitpartiklar. Sprickbildning initierades vid låg spänning och redan vid de spänningsnivåer som ligger vis ”knät” på dragprovningskurvan, vilket indikerar energidissipering genom både begynnande plastisk deformation och sprickbildning. Den lokala töjningen vis sprickinitiering skedde då den lokala töjningen översteg 2%, vilket indikerar att detta skulle kunna vara en tröskelnivå för den töjning som erfordras för initiering av mikro-sprickor. En kontinuum Finita Element (FE) modell utvecklades för att prediktera töjningen hos ett segjärn och dess fördelning i segjärns mikrostruktur. Materialparametrarna för denna modell optimerades genom att anpassa parametrarna i Ramberg-Osgood ekvationen. De predikterade töjningsfördelningarna jämfördes med de experimentell uppmätta töjningsmönstren uppmätta med DIC, både kvalitativt och kvantitativt. Töjningsmönstren överensstämde i stor utsträckning, vilket resulterade i att modellerna kunde anses vara validerade på mikronivå. För att kunna mäta töjningsmönster under dynamiska förlopp på mikronivå utvecklades en metod för att skapa prickmönster och att utföra in-situ CT provning i ett svepeletronmikroskop (SEM). Prickmönstret skapades genom avverkning med en fokuserad jonstråle (FIB), och provades på det ferritiska segjärnet (GJS-500-14 grad). Resultaten visade att maximal töjningskoncentration fanns i närheten av mikrosprickorna, framförallt framför sprickspetsen.

abstract: Time-interleaved analog to digital converters (ADCs) have become critical components in high-speed communication systems. Consumers demands for smaller size, more bandwidth and more features from their communication systems have driven the market to use modern complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies with shorter channel-length transistors and hence a more compact design. Downscaling the supply voltage which is required in submicron technologies benefits digital circuits in terms of power and area. Designing accurate analog circuits, however becomes more challenging due to the less headroom. One way to overcome this problem is to use calibration to compensate for the loss of accuracy in analog circuits. Time-interleaving increases the effective data conversion rate in ADCs while keeping the circuit requirements the same. However, this technique needs special considerations as other design issues associated with using parallel identical channels emerge. The first and the most important is the practical issue of timing mismatch between channels, also called sample-time error, which can directly affect the performance of the ADC. Many techniques have been developed to tackle this issue both in analog and digital domains. Most of these techniques have high complexities especially when the number of channels exceeds 2 and some of them are only valid when input signal is a single tone sinusoidal which limits the application. This dissertation proposes a sample-time error calibration technique which bests the previous techniques in terms of simplicity, and also could be used with arbitrary input signals. A 12-bit 650 MSPS pipeline ADC with 1.5 GHz analog bandwidth for digital beam forming systems is designed in IBM 8HP BiCMOS 130 nm technology. A front-end sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA) was also designed to compare with an SHA-less design in terms of performance, power and area. Simulation results show that the proposed technique is able to improve the SNDR by 20 dB for a mismatch of 50% of the sampling period and up to 29 dB at 37% of the Nyquist frequency. The designed ADC consumes 122 mW in each channel and the clock generation circuit consumes 142 mW. The ADC achieves 68.4 dB SNDR for an input of 61 MHz.

Abstract:

Much of the chemistry that affects life on planet Earth occurs in the condensed phase. The TeraHertz (THz) or far-infrared (far-IR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum (from 0.1 THz to 10 THz, 3 cm-1 to 300 cm-1, or 3000 μm to 30 μm) has been shown to provide unique possibilities in the study of condensed-phase processes. The goal of this work is to expand the possibilities available in the THz region and undertake new investigations of fundamental interest to chemistry. Since we are fundamentally interested in condensed-phase processes, this thesis focuses on two areas where THz spectroscopy can provide new understanding: astrochemistry and solvation science. To advance these fields, we had to develop new instrumentation that would enable the experiments necessary to answer new questions in either astrochemistry or solvation science. We first developed a new experimental setup capable of studying astrochemical ice analogs in both the TeraHertz (THz), or far-Infrared (far-IR), region (0.3 - 7.5 THz; 10 - 250 cm-1) and the mid-IR (400 - 4000 cm-1). The importance of astrochemical ices lies in their key role in the formation of complex organic molecules, such as amino acids and sugars in space. Thus, the instruments are capable of performing variety of spectroscopic studies that can provide especially relevant laboratory data to support astronomical observations from telescopes such as the Herschel Space Telescope, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The experimental apparatus uses a THz time-domain spectrometer, with a 1750/875 nm plasma source and a GaP detector crystal, to cover the bandwidth mentioned above with ~10 GHz (~0.3 cm-1) resolution.

Using the above instrumentation, experimental spectra of astrochemical ice analogs of water and carbon dioxide in pure, mixed, and layered ices were collected at different temperatures under high vacuum conditions with the goal of investigating the structure of the ice. We tentatively observe a new feature in both amorphous solid water and crystalline water at 33 cm-1 (1 THz). In addition, our studies of mixed and layered ices show how it is possible to identify the location of carbon dioxide as it segregates within the ice by observing its effect on the THz spectrum of water ice. The THz spectra of mixed and layered ices are further analyzed by fitting their spectra features to those of pure amorphous solid water and crystalline water ice to quantify the effects of temperature changes on structure. From the results of this work, it appears that THz spectroscopy is potentially well suited to study thermal transformations within the ice.

To advance the study of liquids with THz spectroscopy, we developed a new ultrafast nonlinear THz spectroscopic technique: heterodyne-detected, ultrafast THz Kerr effect (TKE) spectroscopy. We implemented a heterodyne-detection scheme into a TKE spectrometer that uses a stilbazoiumbased THz emitter, 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4-N-methyl-stilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS), and high numerical aperture optics which generates THz electric field in excess of 300 kV/cm, in the sample. This allows us to report the first measurement of quantum beats at terahertz (THz) frequencies that result from vibrational coherences initiated by the nonlinear, dipolar interaction of a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond THz pulse with the sample. Our instrument improves on both the frequency coverage, and sensitivity previously reported; it also ensures a backgroundless measurement of the THz Kerr effect in pure liquids. For liquid diiodomethane, we observe a quantum beat at 3.66 THz (122 cm-1), in exact agreement with the fundamental transition frequency of the υ4 vibration of the molecule. This result provides new insight into dipolar vs. Raman selection rules at terahertz frequencies.

To conclude we discuss future directions for the nonlinear THz spectroscopy in the Blake lab. We report the first results from an experiment using a plasma-based THz source for nonlinear spectroscopy that has the potential to enable nonlinear THz spectra with a sub-100 fs temporal resolution, and how the optics involved in the plasma mechanism can enable THz pulse shaping. Finally, we discuss how a single-shot THz detection scheme could improve the acquisition of THz data and how such a scheme could be implemented in the Blake lab. The instruments developed herein will hopefully remain a part of the groups core competencies and serve as building blocks for the next generation of THz instrumentation that pushes the frontiers of both chemistry and the scientific enterprise as a whole.
