Abstract:
This study explores the problem of female defense in relation to the constitution of women as disempowered speaking subjects within the dominant rhetorical structures of early Stuart literature. The discourse of male rhetoricians defines a subordinate place for women in the order of language. The English formal controversy arguments over the nature of women in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries similarly deploy tropes of male precedence and female subordination to restrain women in the symbolic order and to inhibit any form of female discourse. In order to construct an effective defense a female apologist must reconstitute herself by working within and subverting these constraints. Early Stuart drama provides numerous instances in which women confront and contest the pre-established limits for female speech in their efforts to defend themselves and/or their sex. However, in the dramas selected for this scrutiny, despite the forceful defense strategies that female characters use in their attempts to negotiate their negative positions in language, they are ultimately marginalized. My final chapter therefore examines the rhetorical strategies whereby in her life and writing one woman author, Elizabeth Cary, successfully appropriated and transformed the gendered tropes into compelling female defenses.

Harvie, Ron. "The spectre of Buckingham : art patronage and collecting in early Stuart England." Thesis, McGill University, 1998. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=35895.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship of George Villiers, First Duke of Buckingham (1592--1628) to the art and aesthetic ideas of his era. As the intimate and all-powerful favourite of two successive kings, James I and Charles 1, Buckingham profoundly influenced the course of English politics, both at home and abroad, and it is as a political force that he is generally viewed. But, as a major patron of many artists and the builder of one of the largest art collections of the time, his influence in the cultural sphere must have been equally significant. Yet no modern study of this aspect of Buckingham's persona exists.
After a review of the general historiographical material on Buckingham as well as his evaluation by art historians over the years, Chapter I presents an analysis of the concept and role of Favourite in social and cultural terms. It goes on to detail Buckingham's personal position within early Stuart court culture, and argues that while this culture formed and defined him, he simultaneously re-formed and redefined it through his choices and actions.
Chapter II examines the dynamics of art patronage and Buckingham's activity as a patron, beginning with his early dealings with the native English painter, William Larkin. The relationship of Buckingham and the young Anthony Van Dyck is discussed, with parlicular attention to the artist's brief visit to England in 1620--21, and it is suggested that Buckingham was instrumental in bringing about this event. The Duke's dealings with the controversial polymath, Balthazar Gerbier, are explored, as are his many-layered connections with the premier painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens.
In Chapter III the traditions of art collecting, especially in England are discussed, as is Buckingham's reputation as a collector compared to some of his rivals in the field. The extant documentation of his collection is examined, along with the chronology and methodology of its formation. Particular attention is given to gifts of art to Buckingham by King Charles, the Earl of Arundel and others; the art-buying by Buckingham's agents like Balthazar Gerbier; and the incorporation by the Duke into his own inventory of parts of other collections such as that of the Duke of Hamilton and, more importantly, that of Rubens.
Both in the realm of court culture and in the world of art patronage and art collecting, it was Buckingham more than anyone else who supplied the energy and set the fashion. And he continued to do so even after his premature death: the Duke's image remained bright in the memory of King Charles, whose subsequent expanded relationships with Rubens and Van Dyck owe much of their intensity to both artists' previous connections with Buckingham.

In this thesis, we investigate Sturmian comparison theory and oscillation for second order impulsive differential equations with fixed moments of impulse actions. It is shown that impulse actions may greatly alter the oscillation behavior of solutions. In chapter two, besides Sturmian type comparison results, we give Leightonian type comparison theorems and obtain Wirtinger type inequalities for linear, half-linear and non-selfadjoint equations. We present analogous results for forced super linear and super half-linear equations with damping. In chapter three, we derive sufficient conditions for oscillation of nonlinear equations. Integral averaging, function averaging techniques as well as interval criteria for oscillation are discussed. Oscillation criteria for solutions of impulsive Hill&

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Musicians and Intelligence Operations, 1570-1612: Politics, Surveillance, and Patronage in the Late Tudor and Early Stuart Years by Rachelle C.-Taylor The problem of musicians’ involvement in intelligence operations during the late Tudor and early Stuart years has to date remained relatively unexplored. There is convincing evidence, however, that artists from different disciplines were particularly targeted for recruitment in intelligence operations, designed by Elizabeth I’s councillors, Willam Cecil, Lord Burghley and Francis Walsingham, to infiltrate and disable Catholic oppositional networks on the Continent and in England in the aftermath of the Elizabethan settlement on religion. The Scottish revolt that preceded the arrival of Mary, Queen of Scots in England (1568), the Northern Rising of Catholic Earls (end of 1569), the excommunication of Elizabeth I (1570), and the so-called “Ridolfi” plot to assassinate Elizabeth and raise the Queen of Scots to the English throne (uncovered in 1571) combined to create a large-scale political crisis that galvanized the fledgling intelligence operations, dubbed by scholars as the first “modern” secret service. Religious and political upheavals in late Tudor England had marked consequences on artistic patronage. Although this dissertation is not a comprehensive study of music patronage as it shifted with changing networks of power, I will propose that a form of alternative patronage did emerge with the growth industry in intelligence operations. By the 1580s, large numbers of university students and artists, among them the great Eizabethan dramatist Christopher Marlowe, were recruited to serve in the covert war that mirrored mounting overt hostilities in the Netherlands and in France. By the 1590s, after Walsingham’s death, the Earl of Essex created his own intelligence service, which gradually became an instrument of Essexian aspiration to royal favour. Robert Cecil, Burghley
Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, a general pseudospectral formulation for a class of Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems is consructed. It is shown that almost all, regular or singular, Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems in the Schrö
dinger form may be transformed into a more tractable form. This tractable form will be called here a weighted equation of hypergeometric type with a perturbation (WEHTP) since the non-weighted and unperturbed part of it is known as the equation of hypergeometric type (EHT). It is well known that the EHT has polynomial solutions which form a basis for the Hilbert space of square integrable functions. Pseudospectral methods based on this natural expansion basis are constructed to approximate the eigenvalues of WEHTP, and hence the energy eigenvalues of the Schrö
dinger equation. Exemplary computations are performed to support the convergence numerically.

Cooley, Shevaun. "Homing : poetry ; &, An essay on the poetic leap in the late work of R.S. Thomas." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2013. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/850.

Full text
Abstract:
Homing, as a collection, speaks to the capacity and yearning to navigate our way towards something we might call home. In animal behaviour, this seems like an instinct, hard-wired to the body. It is something I envy. By comparison, the instinct, in human behaviour, feels muffled and complicated. These poems move between two places in which I feel ‘at home’, whatever that means: the south-west of Western Australia, where I was born and raised, and the north-west of Wales, where I lived for a time, and find myself returning to, drawn not by blood, but by longing, and a deep affinity for the landscape. Without any real intention, in the writing of the poems I found I had a lot to say about rivers. In particular, I found myself repeating images of drifting and gripping, as if these two, opposing, compulsions also said something about how we try to find our way home. The poet Mark Doty speaks of a “fierce internal debate between staying moored and drifting away, between holdings and letting go.”1 It is as if the river, too, knows something of how to arrive, and yet its movement is much like that of these poems, pulled by new hungers, at times distracted, or slowed, or apparently lost. Drift. Grip. Perhaps it is, after all, another kind of instinct. In the critical essay that accompanies the poems, I look at the poetic leap in the work of the Welsh poet and priest R.S. Thomas. I was initially compelled by a strange parallel between an actual physical leap of escape, enacted by Thomas, who leapt a graveyard wall in order to avoid speaking to the mourners to whom he had just ministered a funeral service, and the leap found in Italo Calvino’s essay on lightness. This leap is also one of escape, in which the poet-philosopher Guido Calvcanti places a hand on a grave and leaps lightly over it, in order to elude the taunts of some local louts. Calvino calls this act, “an auspicious image for the new millennium.”2 In poetry we find the leap in the act of making metaphor, in enjambment, even in a kind of concentration. In Thomas’s work, the leap is focused in the form of the raptor; a presence repeated through his oeuvre, carrying with it many of his chief concerns, about God, love, and the inherent ferocity of the natural world. In a close reading of those poems, and with the aid of thinkers as disparate as Helene Cixous, Roland Barthes, Simone Weil and Edward Said, this essay is an attempt to trace the ways the leap works in Thomas’s poetry. It is also an attempt to analyse and understand the way poetry itself works to move the reader, in all senses of the word. 1Doty, M. (2001). Still life with oysters and lemon. Abstract:
_I The theory of impulsive di®
erential equations has become an important area of research in recent years. Linear equations, meanwhile, are fundamental in most branches of applied mathematics, science, and technology. The theory of higher order linear impulsive equations, however, has not been studied as much as the cor- responding theory of ordinary di®
erential equations. In this work, higher order linear impulsive equations at ¯
xed moments of impulses together with certain boundary conditions are investigated by making use of a Green'
s formula, constructed for piecewise di®
erentiable functions. Existence and uniqueness of solutions of such boundary value problems are also addressed. Properties of Green'
s functions for higher order impulsive boundary value prob- lems are introduced, showing a striking di®
erence when compared to classical bound- ary value problems of ordinary di®
erential equations. Necessarily, instead of an or- dinary Green'
s function there corresponds a sequence of Green'
s functions due to impulses. Finally, as a by-product of boundary value problems, eigenvalue problems for higher order linear impulsive di®
erential equations are studied. The conditions for the existence of eigenvalues of linear impulsive operators are presented. Basic properties of eigensolutions of self-adjoint operators are also investigated. In particular, a necessary and su±
cient condition for the self-adjointness of Sturm-Liouville opera- tors is given. The corresponding integral equations for boundary value and eigenvalue problems are also demonstrated in the present work.

Abstract:
Corn (Zea mays L.) is an important crop for Brazilian agribusiness, but it is affected by various pests and diseases. A stunting disease associated with the phytopathogenic mollicute, maize bushy stunt phytoplasma (MBPS), is a one of the main problems. This phytoplasma is transmitted by a narrow range of leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), mainly in the genus Dalbulus. In Brazil, the only known vector is the corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Walcott). The corn leafhopper has a deep association and co-evolution with corn, and it is thought to be specific to this crop. In Mexico there are reports of D. maidis developing on wild species of Zea and Tripsacum. Because corn is the only known host of D. maidis in Brazil, it is unknown how this leafhopper and MBSP survive the long corn off-season that occurs in some Brazilian growing regions. Studies have shown that the presence of pathogens in plants and insects and the physiological changes caused by them can improve the biological performance of insect vectors. In Mexico, MBSP is highly pathogenic to some Dalbulus species that feed on corn and compete with D. maidis. Considering that in Brazil other leafhopper species have small populations in corn, it is postulated that MBSP may negatively affect them and reduce their ability to compete with D. maidis. The current study investigated possible alternative host plants of MBSP and D. maidis, other possible leafhopper vectors of MBSP and the effects of the phytoplasma on D. maidis survival and in some biological parameters of this vector and of Agallia albidula Uhler, a non-vector leafhopper present in the weedy vegetation of corn fields. Ten weed species commonly present in corn fields were inoculated with MBSP by infective adults of D. maidis, but none of them became infected with the phytoplasma, suggesting that MBSP has high host plant specificity. Two leafhopper species that inhabit the weedy vegetation of corn fields, A. albidula e Planicephalus flavicosta (Stål), were tested as vectors of MBSP, but none of them was able to transmit the pathogen to corn, indicating that the vector specificity of this phytoplasma is also high. Infection of D. maidis by MBSP negatively affected adult survival. On the other hand, infection of corn plants by MBSP induced higher oviposition by D. maidis and A. albidula. However, the survival of A. albidula nymphs was very low not only on infected plants, but also on healthy corn plants, indicating corn is not a suitable developmental host for A. albidula, regardless of the phytoplasma infection.

Abstract:
This research has focused on the determination of natural populations in the fields, the effect of different inoculum densities on lettuce growth and a study of the association of this fungus with two nematodes (Pratylenchus penetrans Cobb and Meliodogyne hapla Chitwood). Under conditions of artificial infestation of soil the results were satisfactory, but in trials with naturally infested soil the fungus could not be detected. The effect of different inoculum densities was measured at different stages of growth, and only in those plants inoculated 2 weeks after seeding were differences significant and consistent. Some evidence of the detrimental effect of wounding the root system prior to attack by the fungus led to studies of the relationship between this fungus with either P. penetrans or M. hapla. In the first case a negative interaction seemed to exist; no significant increase of the damage caused to the lettuce was observed. In contrast, when the root-knot nematodes and P. tracheiphilum were combined there was a marked reduction of lettuce growth. The interaction was found to be additive.
