Abstract:
This study assesses the relationship between parental supervision and children's delinquency. Data used in this study came from interviews with 99 parents from the Denton city area of Texas in 2003. A probability sample of 53 was contacted by way of randomly selected residential telephone numbers. In addition, 46 parents were non-randomly selected. Parents were asked about how much time they spent supervising and engaging in activities with their children and whether or not the oldest child exhibited delinquent behavior such as fighting, playing hooky, and being sent to detention or the principal's office. The study found that the more time parents spend in supervision and in engaging activities with their daughters, the less likely these children were to exhibit delinquent behavior. This was consistent with previous research. However, the level of delinquency of boys increased with the increase in the amount of parental supervision time, especially by fathers.

Abstract:
In this paper, we will look at the compatibility of different forecasting methods applied to  time series data in esports, specifically three esports, League of Legends, Counter Strike:Global Offensive and Defence of the Ancients 2. The purpose of the study is to assess whether forecasting the amount of professional esport matches for the first three months of 2021 is possible and if so, how accurately. The forecasting methods used in the report are seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA), autoregressive neural networks (NNAR) and a seasonal naïve model as a benchmark. The results show that, for the chosen methods, all the three datasets were able to fulfill the statistical requirements for producing forecasts as well as outperforming the benchmark model, although with various results. Considering the three games, the one that the study was able to predict with highest accuracy was the CS:GO dataset with a NNAR model where we achieved a mean absolute percentage error of 31%.

Vasquez, Vicente. "FIELD SCALE BROMIDE TRANPORT AS A FUNCTION OF PRECIPITATION AMOUNT, INTENSITY AND APPLICATION TIME DELAY." UKnowledge, 2010. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_theses/28.

Abstract:
Rapid and deep transport of solutes in soils can potentially pollute groundwater resources. Field estimates of solute leaching depth based on randomized sampling provide extremely variable field average estimates that confound the treatment effects of the leaching study with the high spatial variation of soil hydraulic properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial scale of variation of solute (Bromide) leaching depth, and apply this scale of variation to study the leaching depth of Bromide as a function of a sinusoidal application of transport causing factors, i.e., rainfall amount, intensity and application time delay. Solute leaching depth varied over different spatial scales. The deepest leaching was observed on plots where the Br center of mass ranged from 19-30 cm depth. Deep leaching occurred with large quantities of low intensity precipitations (5.5 to 6 cm/day) and short time delays (≤ 17 hours), respectively. The hydraulic gradient presented cyclic variation at 8 m wavelength across the 10-30cm depth compartment. Spectral analysis indicated that spatial variation of the leaching depth was mainly affected by precipitation amount and intensity and only a small portion of the leaching depth variation was caused by time delay. Cross-spectral analysis identified common cyclic variation between the Br leaching depth and precipitation amount, intensity and time delay over 32, 32 and 8 m wavelengths, respectively. Simulated Br concentration over depth and horizontal distance and soil water matric potential ψm were in good agreement with experimental observations, the latter revealing a satisfactory Br and water mass balance.

Masters, Amanda Lynn. "Factors Influencing the Amount of Time Spent By Cattle In Streams: Implications for TMDL Development." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34816.

Full text
Abstract:
The amount of time cattle spend standing in streams is one input parameter needed by computer models when total maximum daily load (TMDL) plans are being developed. This input parameter is estimated using professionals' best judgment because experimental data are not available, and estimations are generally inconsistent. The goal of this study was to gain a better estimate of the amount of time cows spend in streams, since this has a significant impact on direct fecal coliform loadings to streams. Significant factors influencing the amount of time cattle spend in streams were identified, and a relationship was developed for predicting the amounts of time cattle spend in streams. Five farms were studied in southwest Virginia from August 2001 through February 2002. Camera surveillance systems were set up on two beef farms and three dairy heifer operations, and cattle activity in streams was recorded during daylight hours. Climatic data, pasture characteristics, feed characteristics, and farm management practices were collected from each site, and their relationships with the amount of time cattle spend in streams were investigated. No significant difference (p=0.82) was found between the amount of time beef cattle and dairy heifers spent in streams. Overall, cows spent an average of 10.12 min day-1cow-1 standing in streams during the observation period. Throughout the study period from August to February, cows spent the highest amount of time in streams during the month of November (14.3 min day-1cow-1). Feed, climatic, and pasture parameters were found to influence the amount of time cattle spent in streams. These significant parameters were used to develop an empirical equation for predicting cattle presence in streams. This model may not accurately predict the amount of time spent in streams by cows during warmer summer months, since data was collected during fall and winter months. Other limitations may be encountered when using the model to predict the amount of time lactating dairy cows spend in streams when streams are their sole water source, since they have a much higher water requirement than those cows studied.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT

Chemotherapy is a common method used for cancer treatment. Especially when it concerns cancers that have grown invasively it seems to be the only efficient treatment due to the substances ability to reach and affect almost the entire body. One major obstacle regarding chemotherapy is that the patients often develop resistance to the cytotoxic substances used. Fluorometric microculture cytotoxicity assay (FMCA) is a method developed to measure sensitivity of tumor cells to different cytotoxic substances in vitro. The assay is based on hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate to fluorescein by cells with intact cell membranes after incubation with drugs for 72 hours. This study investigated the impact of two methodological factors that may cause errors in the achieved results; namely the possible occurrence of drug decay during incubation and the use of an inappropriate amount of cells. These factors were tested by exposing the cytotoxic drugs to pre-incubation in absence of tumor cells for different times and to use suspensions with different concentrations of cells. The results indicated occurrence of drug decay in 3 of the 18 substances tested and that the amount of cells affected the results for most of the drugs tested but to different extent.

Sareh, Narges. "The Relationship Between the Amount of Time Spent in the Block Center and Gender Differences in Preschool Children’s Spatial Performance." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3830.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study investigated whether there is a relationship between the amount of time children spend in the block center and their spatial skills, as well as the gender differences in the amount of time children spend in the block center and in their spatial skills. In addition, other factors influencing spatial skills were examined (e.g. child’s age, parents’ level of education). Using a correlational quantitative design, 75 preschoolers in eight Head Start classrooms were observed three times during their free play time. An existing instrument was used (TOSA: Verdine & Golinkoff, 2018) to measure children’s spatial skills. In addition, children’s parents reported the amount of time children played with spatial toys at home. Boys spent more time playing in block center than girls, however, there was no significant difference between boys’ and girls’ spatial skills. Children who spent more time in the block center scored higher in the spatial test, and a trend emerged suggesting time in the block area might benefit girls more than boys. Child’s age and parents’ level of education were predictors of spatial skills, but they did not moderate the relationship between spatial skills and the amount of time children spent in block center. The findings highlight the potential of playing with blocks in developing and improving spatial skills. Teachers and administrators should provide more opportunities for children to improve their spatial skills, especially children who are from low SES families. This study had some limitations such as the small sample size and the limited observation time. There is a need for more investigations and experiment to find strategies to engage children in spatial play and support the improvement of their spatial skills.

Mårtensson, Gustav. "The effect of lifting speed on factors related to resistance training : A study on muscle activity, amount of repetitions performed, and time under tension during bench press in young males." Thesis, Högskolan i Halmstad, Bio- och miljösystemforskning (BLESS), 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-28522.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Background Many different variables are important to consider when creating resistancetraining programs. However the lifting speed that exercises are performed with has not beenstudied as extensively as many of the other factors. Some research has indicated that trainingwith specific lifting speeds results in improved strength or hypertrophy adaptations comparedto other lifting tempos, but more research is needed to reach better knowledge on what liftingspeeds are optimal for specific goals.Aim The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of various lifting speeds on differentfactors known to influence resistance training. The measured variables were muscle activity, maximum amount of repetitions performed and time under tension during bench press.Method Thirteen males performed bench press at their individual 6 RM. The exercise wasperformed to fatigue with three different lifting tempos (4 second repetitions, 6 secondrepetitions and repetitions intentionally performed as fast as possible). Number of repetitions performed and total time under tension for each test was recorded in seconds. Surfaceelectromyography (EMG) was used to register muscle activity of pectoralis major anddeltoideus anterior. Reference values were gathered using MVIC (Maximum voluntaryisometric contraction) tests. Results EMG amplitudes were higher in pectoralis major when a fast lifting speed (60.1 ± 7.3% of MVIC) was used compared to the medium (54.8 ± 10.2) and slow (54.3 ± 7.1)conditions. More repetition were performed with faster lifting speeds. The time under tensionwas longer for the slow and medium lifting tempos than for the fast lifting tempo. Conclusion The result from this study can be considered when designing resistance trainingprograms. Based on the increased performance and muscle activity associated with the fastlifting tempo, faster lifting speeds may be beneficial when the training goal is to increasestrength levels. It is difficult to draw any conclusions regarding the optimal lifting tempo forspecific training designed to increase hypertrophy, but the time under tension appears to belonger for slower lifting speeds.

ABSTRACT The action that drives this research is the concept of the experienced knowledge amount and the curricular insurgencies as an ethnocurriculum establishing in the existencial plots in heterogeneous formation and with mediations of various fields of existence in their space/time of “belonging”. As an effort of understanding of contemporary defined as liquid existence. I tensioned cultural pedagogy interpellation of present time that causes a kind of formation to the consumerism of cultural meanings and epistemologies that include and exclude trying to shape what we have been in the contingencies. As escape routes and misrule of the aggregation of the society of control, the curriculum when forged is articulated in theoretical production pos-critique with the power of ethnomethods from those who interacted in this research process with their narratives establishing multicentered epistemology in experiential knowledge and knowledge. I made a choice on the qualitative approach and I used the critical multireferential and involved ethnoresearch producing thus a social compromised science and new social rationalities in multiplicity of “knowledges”. The survey answers how the educators reflect about the experienced knowledge amount and curricular insurgencies for interactions with the cultural pedagogies of the present time as ethnocurriculum former vibrations because they assign sense policies to their ethnomethods as practices of non – adherence and consumerism escape of hegemonic meanings of liquid existence. This study intended to understand/make clear as such educators involved with high school segment and education for youth and adults are forging this form of “live curriculum” disarranging education in contingencies of space/time. It rendered problematic subject producing subjectification and forged truth in engendering these cultural pedagogies creating possibilities of school becomes the ethnocurriculum profusion. Finally, this research has configured the experienced knowledge amount and curricular insurgencies as empowerment of significant practices that cause formative “composite” rhizome extending the notion of curriculum/formation

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine a sample of LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) adolescents from 9th - 12th grade to analyze how they spend their time on a given Sunday. The intent of the paper was to determine if adolescent time use was influenced by such independent variable as gender, age, living arrangements, work, school, perceptions of their family, and what time of the day the youth attend Sunday meetings on a specific Sunday. A questionnaire was given to 272 students who attend released school time seminary at a particular high school in Utah. Each student in the sample provided information relative to themselves and their family. They also provided information as to what they mostly did during 15 minute increments for a 24 hour period starting at midnight Saturday night and going through midnight on Sunday night. They were given 28 different items of time use common to adolescents and then were asked to determine what they did most during each 15 minute increment on the Sunday being examined. Simultaneously another similar study was being performed by another graduate student, at an alternative high school in the same area as this study, and the same questions concerning time usage were asked. Some of the most striking differences in time usage were that the alternative high school students spent far less time attending church and doing homework for school, and much more time working for paid employment, socializing with their friends, and using drugs and alcohol. Some of the most significant findings of the study include: 1) males spent considerably more time watching TV and videos, hanging out, cruising and being with friends, working, and playing athletics whereas the females spent more time with personal grooming, talking on the phone and studying school assignments, 2) the time of day when church meetings were held did not influence significantly now when church meetings were held did not alter significantly the number who attended their Sunday meetings, and 3) the perceived degree of family strengths held by the youth did not alter significantly how they spent their Sunday time. Other significant findings include: 4) those youth over 16 spent more time with friends out of the home, less time watching TV and videos, and more time doing paid employment on Sunday, 5) youth who live with both parents spent more time doing school assignments and attending church meetings and 6) those adolescents who work on Sunday spent an average of almost two and a half hours working on Sunday, and they watched TV and videos more and spent less time with their family.

Andersson, Marie, and Elin Nordin. "Voice Onset Time among Children with Phonological Impairment." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Logopedi, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-78467.

Full text
Abstract:
Speech production requires cooperation between cognitive, linguistic and motor processes. It also requires spatial and temporal control of muscles, as well as simultaneous and coordinated activity of respiration, phonation and articulation (Cheng, Murdoch, Goozée & Scott, 2007; Yorkston, Beukelman, Strand & Bell, 1999; Raphael, Borden & Harris, 2011). Voice Onset Time (VOT) reflects the timing between phonation and articulation (Hoit-Dalgaard, Murry & Kopp, 1983). VOT is the most reliable acoustic cue for distinguishing between voiceless or voiced plosives (Auzou et al. 2000). Studies of English-speaking children with phonological impairment have shown atypical VOT-patterns (Bond & Wilson, 1980). The aim of the present study was to investigate Voice Onset Time (VOT) among Swedish children with phonological impairment and to examine if their VOT-values differ from typically developed Swedish children. Participants were 38 children aged 4;2−11;6 distributed over eight age- groups and five developmental stages of phonology. Audio recordings of minimal pairs were made at preschools, schools or at speech pathology clinics. The results indicated that children with phonological impairment produced VOT with deviant values and with a great variability. A marked acoustic difference between voiceless and voiced stop consonants was present, but not in all cases. Since the VOT-values were distributed over the group of children with phonological impairment, no developmental trend toward adult-like values that could be related to increasing age was found for either the acquisition of producing VOT or the acquisition of producing voicing lead. No differences in VOT were seen between the children in different phonological developmental stages or ages. No correlation between the degree of deviance of VOT and the proportion of Procent Phonemes Correct (PPC), age or phonological processes were found. From the results the conclusion can be drawn that children with phonological impairment have deviant VOT-values that could be caused by lack of phonological knowledge, but in particular since the variability did not decrease with increased age, have difficulties with motor execution.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the physical activity levels and the time management practices of selected university students, and to identify the differences between physical activity levels and time management practices in terms of gender. The subjects of this study were 128 male (55,9%) and 101 female (44,1%) university students from six universities in istanbul, Turkey which were selected on a volunteer basis. The Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire (PAAQ) and the Time Management Questionnaire (TMQ) were used to gather data. The data were analyzed by employing a Statistical Package for Social Statistics. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The level .05 of significance was selected. There was significant correlation between total hours spend in a week and time planning, and negative correlation between time wasters. There was significant correlation between total MET spend in an hour and time attitudes, between total MET intensities and time attitudes. According to Chi-squared analysis gender difference is dependent of the PA levels in terms of &ldquo
sport MET&rdquo
and &ldquo
total MET&rdquo
intensities. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a significant main effect. Subsequent unvaried analysis indicated differences in Time Management in terms of gender.

Inchley, Joanna Catherine. "Determinants of leisure-time physical activity among early adolescents." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24734.

Full text
Abstract:
A physically active lifestyle is now recognised as an essential component of healthy living. As well as longer term health gains, physical activity during childhood promotes optimal growth and development, helps prevent overweight and obesity, protects against risk factors for cardiovascular disease and enhances psychological wellbeing. However, evidence suggests that many young people are not sufficiently active to benefit their health. In order to inform the development of effective interventions, there is a need to understand the factors which influence physical activity participation among young people in Scotland. The aim of this study was to investigate modifiable determinants of physical activity among early adolescents during the period of transition from primary to secondary school. Drawing on a multidisciplinary perspective, within a socio-ecological framework, the relative influence of psychological, social and environmental factors was examined. Data were collected longitudinally as part of the Physical Activity in Scottish Schoolchildren (PASS) study. In total, 1099 children who completed a questionnaire in both Primary 7 (age 11 years) and Secondary 2 (age 13 years) were included. The results show that boys were significantly more active, reported more favourable psychological profiles and had greater support from fathers and peers for being active, than girls. A range of psychological, social and environmental variables were significantly associated with physical activity, of which psychological factors accounted for the greatest proportion of variance in behaviour. Intention to be active was the most consistent predictor of physical activity across age and gender groups. Combined psycho-social-environmental models explained around two-fifths of the variance in physical activity among boys and around a third of the variance among girls. Physical activity participation in P7 was predictive of participation in S2, indicating that early involvement increases the likelihood that young people will continue to be active as they get older. The results support the need for integrated, multifaceted approaches to physical activity promotion among the early adolescent population in Scotland, addressing influences at the individual and supra-individual level. Age and gender were moderators of physical activity behaviour, demonstrating the importance of understanding gender-specific determinants within a developmental context.

Abstract:
From the moment it is born, love seems to be accompanied by a desire to last forever, and an intimate belief that it will last. Sometimes this belief is based on the enigmatic forgetting that this love, until a few moments ago, had no existence. For, as soon as it appears, love seems to create, by some unknown means, something like a common past which surrounds the lovers, thus making up for long memories. Projecting its evidence on our past, love thus extends its clarity on the future itself, and one would, in fact, struggle to believe in the love of the one who would form the project of loving provisionally. And yet, despite its claim to eternity, love often encounters a great many obstacles to its maintenance. For time, if it causes us to become what we are, it also causes us to change, and our feelings, as well as those that we carry, can, as a result, also change. If it can be what brings together and unites two subjects more and more, consolidating their feelings, time is also the occasion for love to change: with time, desire sometimes dies out, and with it passion. And even when the relationship seems to maintain itself, it is sometimes only by virtue of a slow and discreet substitution of love by habit: thus it is believed that love lasts while it has, in fact, disappeared under the effect of the latter. Answering the question of becoming would then imply asking whether, between the extinction of desire and the sleep of habit, a way could exist to love and to love each other over a long period of time

Abstract:
Aim: This study examined associations between leisure-time activities and gambling participation respectively problem gambling among adolescents in Sweden. Furthermore, the study examined sex differences and the degree of possibly confounding factors. Methods: The data was obtained from European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs, 2019 (n=1,911). Chi2-tests and logistic/multiple logistic regressions were used to analyze the data. Results: Unstructured leisure-time activity was robustly positively associated with gambling participation, structured leisure-time activity was weakly negatively associated with gambling participation among students. Unstructured leisure-time activity was moderately positively associated with problem gambling, structured leisure-time activity was weakly negatively associated with problem gambling among students. Unstructured leisure-time activity was strongly positively associated with gambling participation, structured leisure-time activity was strongly negatively associated with gambling participation for boys. Unstructured leisure-time activity was weakly positively associated with gambling participation for girls. Parental monitoring, school adjustments and externalizing behaviour problems affected the association between unstructured leisure-time activity for students respectively boys. Conclusion: Associations were found of varying extent between leisure-time activities and gambling participation respectively problem gambling. More and stronger associations were found for boys than girls and possibly confounding factors affected the association between unstructured leisure-time activity and problem gambling to some degree.

Abstract:
In a Midwest school district, school personnel and students are concerned that the Extra School Time (EST) program student enrollment is declining. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore teacher, administrator, and adult age student perceptions to gain a deeper understanding of the problem leading to declining enrollment in the EST program. Using Lewin's holistic model of systemic leadership and evaluation of programs, teachers', students' and administrators' perceptions of factors, processes for support, curriculum needs, and actions to improve implementation of the EST program were explored. Using a qualitative case study, data were collected via semi-structured interviews and a survey of 9 purposefully sampled participants. Sampling criteria included being a current or former adult age student who attended the EST program, current EST teacher, and EST administrators. Data from semi-structured interviews and surveys were triangulated and analyzed using inductive and comparative coding, and a constant comparative analysis method. Emerging themes were coded using axial coding. Six themes emerged: lack of child care, transportation, work conflict with class attendance, convenience of times classes were offered, and offering courses that were relevant to the student. A 24-hour faculty professional development program was developed to educate EST faculty and staff on the issues influencing declining EST enrollment and develop strategies and actions to improve implementation of the EST program by addressing student and teacher needs. Positive social change from this study may include increased graduation rates, meaningful employment for EST participants, college entrance, and employment growth for the local community.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to evaluate (a) the extent to which different impulsivity measures would be related to each other and to a risk taking measure, (b) the extent to which impulsivity, risk taking, time perception and time perspective are related to each other, and (c) the extent to which these processes differ in Latino and White American students. Experiment I was conducted at Utah State University. One hundred and fortythree participants were exposed to the delay discounting, probability discounting and temporal bisection procedures, and answered the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI). Results showed that (a) the AUC for delay discounting was related to the scores on the BIS-11 scale, (b) the AUCs for delay and probability discounting were positively and significantly correlated, (c) the mean of the temporal bisection procedure was correlated with the AUC of the delay discounting procedure, (d) the scores on the ZTPI were correlated with the impulsivity measures, and (e) the scores on the ZTPI subscales were also correlated with the risk taking measure. These results suggest that different impulsivity measures may be evaluating similar decision-making processes, that impulsivity and risk taking may be different decision- making processes, and that time perception and time perspective are related to impulsivity and risk taking. Experiment II was conducted at Washington University in St. Louis, with 18 Latinos and 16 White Americans. Results show that while Latinos were more impulsive in the delay discounting procedure, their scores did not differ from the White Americans on the BIS-11. Interestingly, Latinos and White Americans did not differ on time perception, but they did differ on time perspective: Latinos scored higher on fatalism compared to White Americans.

In this paper, we develop a method for achieving high precision of time and frequency synchronization among multiple base stations in GPS system. We first describe the basic theory of timing and frequency checking, and then analyze several error sources which influence the precision of time and frequency synchronization. Furthermore, we derive explicit formula for calculating the precision of time and frequency. Tested results have indicated that our method can indeed achieve very high time and frequency precision.

Abstract:

Obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportions and is affecting younger generations. Research indicates that media usage contributes to adolescent obesity. Data shows that technology use (television, video games, and computer, etc.) is specifically higher among Latinos than their White counterparts. However, limited research exists on the effects that technology use has on Latino adolescents' adiposity. A cross-sectional baseline analysis was conducted using a sample of (N=131) at-risk Latino middle school adolescents from the Youth Empowerment for Success Sí Se Puede Project. Body fat percent was used as the dependent variable; while television time, video or computer game time, and frequency of personal computer use were the independent variables. Results indicated that only video or computer game time had a positive association with Latino youth body fat percent, even after controlling for socioeconomic status. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed.

Salton, Christine Ann. "Preferences for intervention among cancer patients receiving radiotherapy for the first time." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25730.

Full text
Abstract:
This exploratory, descriptive study was designed to describe health care preferences among cancer patients receiving radiotherapy for the first time. In addition, the relationship between selected demographic variables and patients' health care preferences was examined as was the relationship between patients' anxiety and their health care preferences. A convenience sample of forty newly-diagnosed cancer patients was selected from the population of patients receiving radiotherapy at a large urban cancer treatment facility. The sample included 21 women and 19 men ranging in age from 36 to 79 years. From medical records, the researcher collected relevant demographic information. Patients completed the Health Care Preference Survey, a seven-item forced-choice questionnaire. Each item presented a clinical situation and offered a choice between a cognitive or an affective nursing intervention. Anxiety was measured by the subjects' responses to the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI). In most situations, patients preferred cognitive over affective interventions and the preference for cognitive interventions was largely independent of demographic variables. Clinical situation and timing may have affected intervention preference. Patients' anxiety levels significantly affected their preferences for health care interventions. Patients who had high State anxiety scores preferred affective rather than cognitive interventions. Incidental findings included subjects' comments about participation in the study and attitudes toward their illness experiences and obtaining information. Implications for nursing practice and recommendatons for further research are discussed.

Abstract:

Survey data were collected from 445 part-time transportation workers to test three sets of competing hypotheses about primary and secondary part-time workers that were developed from Partial Inclusion theory (Allport, 1933), Investment Model theory (Farrell & Rusbult, 1981), and the Part-time Work Arrangements perspective (Feldman, 1990). The Investment Model constructs explaining job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intent received the most support. However, the part-time work arrangements perspective also received some support as there were significant differences in organizational commitment and turnover intentions between primary and secondary part-time workers. The application of Partial Inclusion theory to the part-time worker subgroup context was not supported.

Abstract:
Objectives: We aimed to assess the variation in patient body weight over time according to the treatment outcome among multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. The data of patients commencing MDR-TB therapy were analyzed. Data were collected from different public TB treatment facilities located in peri-urban areas to the south of Lima, Peru. The outcome was patient body weight (kilograms) from treatment commencement, measured monthly. A random effects model was fitted using robust standard errors to calculate 95% confidence intervals. Results: Of a total of 1242 TB cases, 243 (19.6%) were MDR-TB. Only 201 cases were included in the analysis; 127 (63.2%) were males and the mean patient age was 33.6 (standard deviation 16.2) years. Weight changes over time among the patients who were cured differed from changes in those who died during therapy (p < 0.001). Weight curve divergence was important at the end of the third, fourth, and fifth treatment months: on average, the weight difference was 2.18 kg (p < 0.001), 3.27 kg (p = 0.007), and 3.58 kg (p = 0.03), respectively, when cured patients were compared to those who died. Conclusions: Our results show that weight variation during treatment can be a useful surrogate for the treatment outcome, specifically death during therapy. MDR-TB patients with weight loss should be followed more closely, as they are at greater risk of death.
