Abstract:
We developed an attachable magnetic nerve stimulator (AMNS) that connects the metallic instruments to a neurophysiological monitoring unit for monitoring the facial nerve (FN) during ear surgery and present our experiences with intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of the FN using AMNS. The FN in 20 patients who underwent tympanomastoidectomy for chronic ear disease was examined. The electromyography (EMG) amplitudes of the FN using AMNS were assessed. The EMG amplitudes of the FN at 1.00-mA stimulation during drilling were 265 ± 64 µV in the orbicularis oris and 288 ± 57 µV in the orbicularis oculi. The EMG amplitudes using AMNS attached to the surgical instruments under 0.35-mA stimulus at the tympanic segment of the FN were 196 ± 43 µV in the orbicularis oris and 197 ± 41 µV in the orbicularis oculi. The application of continuous stimulation with burr and surgical instruments using the AMNS is feasible and effective for FN stimulation and identification.

Abstract:
Although the understanding of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) and their relationship with disseminated peritoneal mucinous disease have advanced, the diagnosis, classification, and treatment of AMNs are still confusing for pathologists and clinicians. The Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists (GPSG-KSP) proposed a multicenter study and held a workshop for the “Standardization of the Pathologic Diagnosis of the Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm” to overcome the controversy and potential conflicts. The present article is focused on the diagnostic criteria, terminologies, tumor grading, pathologic staging, biologic behavior, treatment, and prognosis of AMNs and disseminated peritoneal mucinous disease. In addition, GPSG-KSP proposes a checklist of standard data elements of appendiceal epithelial neoplasms to standardize pathologic diagnosis. We hope the present article will provide pathologists with updated knowledge on how to handle and diagnose AMNs and disseminated peritoneal mucinous disease.

Abstract:
We continuously monitored esophageal (Pes) and gastric (Pga) pressures and used these measurements in a three-component model to estimate instantaneous diaphragmatic (DIA), inspiratory accessory muscle (IAM), and postexpiratory recoil (PER) pressures at various times during inspiration. We validated our model both by volume-pressure relationships of the respiratory system (Vrc-Pga and Vab-Pga, where Vrc and Vab are the rib cage and abdominal volumes, respectively) as well as electromyography of the respiratory muscles. Measurements were carried out at rest and during graded treadmill exercise in 11 subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPDs) and 8 age-matched normal subjects (AMNs). AMNs were 59 +/- 2 (SE) yr and had a forced expiratory volume at 1 s (FEV1.0) of 3.6 +/- 0.2 liters; COPDs were 66 +/- 2 yr and had a FEV1.0 of 1.0 +/- 0.1 liters. We noted the following. At rest, both AMNs and COPDs exhibited an increasing DIA pressure (PDIA) across inspiratory time (TI) at rest. As expired minute ventilation increased with exercise intensity, AMNs continued to maintain this PDIA ramp across inspiration; in contrast, COPDs exhibited higher values of PDIA during the first half of TI than during the second half. At all intensities of exercise, COPDs exhibited higher IAM and PER pressures than the AMNs.

Abstract:
Introduction: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are rare and account for 1% of gastrointestinal neoplasms and the diagnosis is mostly incidental. In spite of advances in the understanding of AMNs and their association with peritoneal disease, AMNs are still confusing entities in respect to their diagnosis and treatment alike. Case Report: We report a case of a 51year old female who presented with abdominal pain and vomiting and was diagnosed as ileo-colic intussusception on ultrasonography and CECT abdomen. Histopathological examination of right hemicolectomy specimen revealed a high grade appendicular mucinous neoplasm with low grade areas. The peri-appendiceal mucin deposition forming a mass in the cecum at the base of appendix was the lead point for intussusception in this case. No features of pseudomyxoma peritonei was seen in this case. This patient is well after 18 months of follow up period. Conclusion: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare and diagnosis is often difficult as presentation is mostly non-specific. Hence, awareness and further classification of these tumours is essential for diagnosis, determining the risk of recurrence and malignancy and also prognostication.

Abstract:
RNA polymerase (RNAP) is a well-validated target for the development of antibacterial and antituberculosis agents. Because the purification of large quantities of native RNA polymerase from pathogenic mycobacteria is hazardous and cumbersome, the primary screening was carried out using Escherichia coli RNAP. The authors have developed a high-throughput screening (HTS) assay to screen for novel inhibitors of RNAP. In this assay, a fluorescent analog of UTP, gamma-amino naphthalene sulfonic acid (γ-AmNS) UTP, was used as one of the nucleotide substrates. Incorporation of UMP in RNA results in the release of γ-AmNS-PPi, which has higher intrinsic fluorescence than (γ-AmNS) UTP. The assay was optimized in a 384-well format and used to screen 670,000 compounds at a concentration of 10 μM. About 0.1% of the compounds showed more than 60% inhibition in the primary HTS. All the primary actives tested for dose response using the same assay had an EC50 below 100 μM. Eighty percent of the primary HTS actives obtained using E. coli RNAP showed comparable activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis RNAP in the conventional radioactive assay. Activity of hits selected for the hit-to-lead optimization was also confirmed against Mycobacterium bovis RNAP which has >99% sequence identity with Mycobacterium tuberculosis RNAP subunits.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs), although not classified as rare, are relatively uncommon tumors most often discovered incidentally during colorectal surgery. Accurate identification of AMNs is difficult due to non-specific symptoms, overlapping tumor markers with other conditions, and the potential for misdiagnosis. This underscores the urgent need for precision in diagnosis to prevent severe complications. CASE SUMMARY This case report describes the unexpected discovery and treatment of a low-grade AMN (LAMN) in a 74-year-old man undergoing laparoscopic hemicolectomy for transverse colon adenocarcinoma (AC). Preoperatively, non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms and elevated tumor markers masked the presence of AMN. The tumor, presumed to be an AMN peritoneal cyst intraoperatively, was confirmed as LAMN through histopathological examination. The neoplasm exhibited mucin accumulation and a distinct immunohistochemical profile: Positive for Homeobox protein CDX-2 , Cytokeratin 20, special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2, and Mucin 2 but negative for cytokeratin 7 and Paired box gene 8. This profile aids in distinguishing appendiceal and ovarian mucinous tumors. Postoperative recovery was uncomplicated, and the patient initiated adjuvant chemotherapy for the colon AC. CONCLUSION This case highlights the diagnostic complexity of AMNs, emphasizing the need for vigilant identification to avert potential complications, such as pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Abstract:
Autologous cell implantation and angiogenic gene therapy have been evaluated in critical limb ischemic patients. Here, we compared the features of these strategies individually and in combination. C57BL/6J mice with ischemic hindlimbs were injected with adherent mononuclear cells (aMNCs) from bone marrow or adenovirus encoding the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene (Ad-HGF). Under comparable angiogenic conditions, 10 × 105 aMNCs produced significantly higher amounts of VEGF and FGF-2 and stimulated the number of arterioles in ischemic muscle compared with 1 × 108 plaque-forming units (pfu) of Ad-HGF. Ad-HGF produced 10 times more HGF in ischemic muscle compared with aMNCs. Injection of 0.3 × 105 aMNCs previously transfected with Ad-HGF (aMNC/Ad-HGF) increased blood flow and elevated the numbers of capillaries and arterioles to levels comparable with that seen with 10 × 105 aMNCs or 1 × 108 pfu of Ad-HGF. Hypoxic conditions induced the apoptotic death of aMNCs. However, coincubation with HGF or aMNC/Ad-HGF protected cells against apoptosis. HGF stimulated the migration of aMNCs, and the migration capacity of the aMNC/Ad-HGF group was significantly higher than that in the aMNC/Ad-LacZ group. In conclusion, cell-based HGF gene therapy decreased the number of cells required for neovascularization. This strategy can be an effective angiogenic therapy.

Abstract:
Aminomalononitrile (AMN), the HCN formal trimer, is a molecule of interest in prebiotic chemistry, in fine organic synthesis, and, currently, in materials science, mainly for bio-applications. Herein, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements by means of non-isothermal experiments of the stable AMN p-toluenesulfonate salt (AMNS) showed successful bulk AMN polymerization. The results indicated that this thermally stimulated polymerization is initiated at relatively low temperatures, and an autocatalytic kinetic model can be used to appropriately describe, determining the kinetic triplet, including the activation energy, the pre-exponential factor, and the mechanism function (Eα, A and f(α)). A preliminary structural characterization, by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, supported the effective generation of HCN-derived polymers prepared from AMNS. This study demonstrated the autocatalytic, highly efficient, and straightforward character of AMN polymerization, and to the best of our knowledge, it describes, for the first time, a systematic and extended kinetic analysis for gaining mechanistic insights into this process. The latter was accomplished through the help of simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG)-DSC and the in situ mass spectrometry (MS) technique for investigating the gas products generated during these polymerizations. These analyses revealed that dehydrocyanation and deamination processes must be important elimination reactions involved in the complex AMN polymerization mechanism.

Abstract:
This work is a dissertation on ancient literature, especially classical and apocalyptic prophecy, and investigates the texts of the prophets Hosea and Amos. Its hypothesis is that these texts are apocalyptic in nature. To demonstrate this, the paper is organized into three chapters. In the first chapter the characteristics of classical prophecy and apocalyptic literature are presented. It compares classical prophecy with its predecessor, oral prophecy, in order to establish its characteristics. Then apocalyptic literature is examined as the heir of both prophetic and wisdom literature, demonstrating its origin and peculiarities. In the second chapter it demonstrates the process followed in putting in final form the prophecies of Hosea and Amos. It is known that the texts of the prophets went through a long process of textual development, in which literary layers were aggregated and merged to explain, guide chronologically, unite or separate pericopes and update them liturgically. The stages of the texts development are analyzed, ranging from the oral proclamation of the prophecy until its final version in which apocalyptic passages have apparently been inserted. In the third and final chapter some passages of the books of Hosea and Amos that seem to have apocalyptic characteristics are identified for analysis and argumentation. Altogether we examine twelve citations. There are only a few, short passages with apocalyptic features, motifs and fragments. The goal of this paper is to point to the existence of these texts in order to highlight the apocalyptic influence exerted on the books of Hosea and Amos.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with childhood and a didactic, that formulated by Comenius in the intertwining of his works A escola da infância, O labirinto do mundo e o paraíso do coração and Didática Magna, addressed in one way or another, to childhood. Due to this, this work thinks the didactic as part of a childlike device once it combines a kind of knowledge, power and a way of producing the child subject. Hence the question: how does a comeniana didactic that artistic didactic, the art of teaching produce a childhood and its ways of knowing it, leading it and leading it? The aim of this research is precisely identify and, somehow, problematize, through Foucaults ideas around the pastoral power and governmentality, the productivity of the artistic didactic comeniana starting from their forces of creation: 1. the infantilization of childhood; 2. the government of childhood (and oneself) 3. and the teaching writing as an ethical, aesthetic and political work, a way of thinking and writing in education. There seems to be a whole technology of salvation in the didactics of the comeniana childhood: knowledgement, grow, lead, govern. Technology of pastoral power that is addressed to anyone and every one. To others and oneself, this greater purpose for such power. The other, a child, who is in formation at an early age, to not get lost in the labyrinth of the world, an individual who is subject to the operation of pastoral power. The oneself, the child by herself, the one who knows the way to salvation and sticks to him (God), who is known, is guided, is governed, the one who makes (her)himself undergo the exercises of the educational ministry of didactic art. What you have there is a infantilization of childhood ongoing. Production of a specific identity a polite child, an obedient believer. Production of a childish way of life - the child within didactic art, the child who is subject to didactic art. What is at stake here is precisely to teach what one is, what one can be. The childhood would be, since then on target of adults in a relationship of dependence, those who would insert values in the ones previously mentioned (child), codes of a life conformed to a whole network of knowledge and power over education. The child as an object of education. The child to be educated, to be saved, from the world and himself. Thus, childhood was making up the net of didactic writing since Comenius, this piece of a device of Western childishness, which would still be ongoing.

Full text
Abstract:
In the paper the optimal robust vibrations control of flexible rotor supported in active magnetic bearings (AMBs) is presented. The purpose of the research is to stabilize the rotate rotor and effective control of rotor vibrations. The noncollocation effect which produce no interlaced of zeros and poles of AMBs system problem stability is investigated. The frequency mode analysis of collocation and noncollocation cases is presented. The μ-Synthesis Control is applied to stabilize the rigid and flexible critical frequency modes of the rotor AMBs. The singular value analysis is used to obtain the robust performances of closed-loop system. The dynamical behaviour of AMBs system in wide range of rotation speed (up 21000 rpm) is investigated. The goal of this paper is also the experimental evaluation of the robust performance. The stable operation, good stiffness of the rotor and robust performances of the closed-loop AMBs systems is reached. Finally, the success of the robust control is demonstrated through results of computer simulations and experimental results.

In ASME 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2011-47792.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Moving Least-Squares (AMLS) surface based approach for multi-view or multi-sensor point cloud ICP registration. The core idea of this approach is to reconstruct a smooth and accurate surface, e. s. AMLS surface, from a point cloud, without data segmentation and surface model selection, resulting in an accurate point-to-AMLS surface ICP registration. The major difference between AMLS and traditional MLS is that the width of Gaussian kernel is adaptively scaled with the principle curvature, which is defined through local integral invariant analysis. Experimental results of both synthetic data and scanned data from a mechanical part show that the presented approach is more accurate and robust on sensor noise and sample density.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper reviews the existing aging management programs (AMPs) for the reactor coolant system (RCS) components in pressurized water reactors (PWRs), including the reactor pressure vessel and internals, the reactor coolant system and connected lines, pressurizer, reactor coolant pumps, valves, and steam generators. These programs have been evaluated in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) report Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL), NUREG-1801, for their use in the license renewal process. These AMPs include both generic and plant-specific programs. The generic AMPs are acceptable for managing aging effects during an extended period of operation and do not require further evaluation; the plant-specific AMPs require further evaluation. The use of the GALL report should facilitate both preparation of a license renewal application and timely and uniform review by the NRC staff.

In ASME 2019 Gas Turbine India Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gtindia2019-2384.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper focusses on analysing the vibration behaviour of a rigid rotor levitated by active magnetic bearings (AMB) under the influence of unbalance and misalignment parameters. Unbalance in rotor and misalignment between rotor and both supported AMBs are key fault parameters in the rotor system. To demonstrate this dynamic analysis, an unbalanced rigid rotor with a disc at the middle levitated by two misaligned active magnetic bearings has been mathematically modelled. One of the novel concepts is also described as how the force due to active magnetic bearings on the rigid rotor is modified when the rotor is parallel misaligned with AMBs. With inclusion of inertia force, unbalance force and force due to misaligned AMBs, the equations of motion of the rigid rotor system are derived and converted into dimensionless form in terms of various non-dimensional system and fault parameters. Numerical simulations have been performed to yield the dimensionless rotor displacement and controlling current responses at AMBs. The prime intention of the present paper is to study the effect on the displacement response of the rigid rotor system and the current consumption of AMBs for different ranges of disc eccentricities and rotor-AMB misalignments.

Kemp-Benedict, Eric. AMES: A model for energy, economic and environmental assessment. Stockholm Environment Institute, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2023.046.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper introduces the Adaptable Macroeconomic Extension for Sustainability analysis (AMES). AMES is a multi-sector, demand-led, structuralist model designed to provide consistent economic drivers to the widely used Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP). The focus is on low-emission development strategies in low- and middle-income countries. Together, LEAP and AMES form a hybrid energy-economy model that combines two approaches: bottom-up energy-systems analysis and top-down macroeconometric assessments. Because of its focus on low- and middle-income countries, AMES can simulate structural change. Moreover, unlike most macroeconomic models used for energy analysis, AMES exhibits hysteresis, in which, for example, an energy investment programme can lead to persistent, positive impacts on GDP and employment. An open-source tool hosted on GitHub, AMES is a flexible model designed to be adapted for specific needs and studies.
