Abstract:
The history of the Institute of Fine Arts library collections cannot be disentangled from the intellectual and physical history of the Institute itself. Housed in various locations since 1938, the collections have grown parallel to the interests of the IFA’s faculty, many of whom, in its early years, were exiles from Europe and brought different approaches to the study of art. Amidst New York’s array of outstanding art research libraries, the IFA’s once extremely modest collection now comprises some 175,000 volumes, divided between two libraries: the Chan Library (for art history and archaeology) and the Conservation Center Library.

Abstract:
Research works devoted to the students of St. Vladimir University usually highlight either specific features of the educational process or some aspects of their everyday life. Student‘s artistic interest has been studied to the lesser extent. The article depicts the place of fine arts in the life of the St. Vladimir University students in the years 1834-1863. The author points out that the students’ interest in fine arts developed under the influence of the region’s artistic tradition. Therefore, specifics of the artistic life in Ukraine is analyzed in the article as well. Special attention is paid to Kyiv as the center of artistic life of the region. Kyiv Сontract Fair which took place annually in the second half of January was the main event for the regional art market. Famous local artists worked in Kyiv and in the region as drawing teachers in various educational institutions. Other artists came to Kyiv to make drawings of its views and historical monuments. St. Vladimir University played an important role in artistic life of the city during the years 1834-1863. The University’s collection of fine arts, which included a lot of pieces of the Western European art, was designed to promote aesthetic and artistic development of the St. Vladimir University students. The University allowed students to attend elective drawing lessons provided by experienced artists and teachers. Nevertheless, only a few students attended these lessons. Scientific illustration as a component of visual art played important role in students‘ education, especially for medical students, botanists, zoologists etc. In many cases illustration was the main source of visual information for students. The author admits that a lot of students were skilled drawers themselves because drawing was the easiest way to visualize the results of their research work. Some students gathered their own small collections of art works. The fact that the students were familiar with the works of fine art affirms their high cultural level and belonging to the social elite.

The article for the first time in Ukrainian historiography, museology and monumentology considers works of European fine art, where there is an image of a wind wooden musical instrument bassoon. Works of painting, graphics, works of monumental art (sculpture) are analyzed. This is a characteristic of the collections of bassoons in museums in Western Europe, the USA and Canada. Publications stored in the funds of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, Yaroslav Mudryi National Library Of Ukraine, the National Historical Library of Ukraine, the National Scientific and Research Restoration Center of Ukraine were used. The expositions of the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Arts (Kyiv), the Museum of Theatrical, Musical and Film Art of Ukraine (Kyiv), the State Yagotynsky Historical Museum (Yagotyn, Kyiv Region), as well as Internet resources of collections of wind instruments of a number of museums in Europe, the USA and Canada are analyzed. Materials from the personal archive and musical collection of the bassoonist, teacher in the class of wind musical instruments, soloist of orchestra V. Kepin (Kyiv) were involved. Based on the analysis, it was concluded that the Flemish artist Dеnis van Alsloot can be considered one of the first in European painting, which brought to our time the composition of wind musical instruments characteristic of the musical culture of Western Europe of the XVII century. In Ukraine, one of the oldest copies of the bassoon (1730s) is stored in the Museum of Theatrical, Musical and Film Art of Ukraine (Kyiv).

Abstract:
The Aaron Douglas Collection of works of art in the Amistad Research Center, now at Tulane University, includes works of art little known to scholars of American art. It is a collection of two hundred and seventy examples by black and minority artists, most dating from 1925 to 1954. Fifty-two of this number have been illustrated with several in color. There is no published catalog. Though individual works have been shown in specialized exhibitions, virtually none of this group has been included in standard survey books used in courses teaching American art history. The vitality of these works of art, the message they convey, should be included with the discipline of American art history The Aaron Douglas Collection represents a portion of a larger assemblage made by the Harmon Foundation of New York City. The details of the Collection's history are discussed in Chapter One Chapters Two and Three of this thesis provide a necessary foundation to the appreciation of the artists and their works. Several of these artists have slipped into obscurity. For that reason, background information about their times, the 20s and 30s, will perhaps serve to fill in some of the inherent gaps. Chapter Four gives a basic profile of each artist highlighting, whenever possible, pertinent information about them. The end of each profile contains catalog information for each of their pieces in the Collection
